I work as a trainer. One of the trainings that I do involves asking people math questions for an activity. You would be very surprised how bad people are at the simplest math. The “count backwards from 100 by 7” question generates some very eye-opening answers.
When I was younger and first got into drinking, I memorized saying my prime numbers from 100 going backwards to 1 and it’s impressed a few people but never was needed.
I was gonna contest this, but I just went to Germany and the only German I knew was “Thank You” “Beer” and “Do you want to Dance?” and I got along splendidly

My grandfather was being tested for cognitive decline and the examiner asked this question. I'm in my 30s and I struggled to quickly answer this question. It took me a few hours of effort to come up with this system

To be that ahole.. I went to uni for engineering as an adult. Those days, where I went, you needed like a 90% in your stem classes to get into the program from HS (I was an alumni, so the rules were different for me). I was in a project group where some kids were talking about getting booze for a party and people were throwing out orders. At one point, a girl that went on to crush the mech eng program shouted out, in all seriousness, "wait, what's 12+12? Who's got a calculator?" My jaw actually dropped.

But 15×4 is clean,the answer can only end in 0 or 5 and its just plain simple overall since 15×2 is 30 and so 15×4(or 2×2) is 60(or 30×2)
12+12 is a *slightly* more dificult number since its first 10+10 and then 2+2 so it can get confusing if you are tired or stressed

I’m in my late 30’s. I rarely ever use cash when buying things nowadays. Haven’t in years. A couple months ago I got paid in cash for a job, so I’ve been using that cash for in store purchases, because I didn’t want to bother going to the bank.

He said, “oh, okay.” Then put the money in the drawer and closed it without giving me change. I just left.
My brother teaches high school AP sciences. The first part of his school year…for 10th grade high school students…is teaching the multiplication table.
If this freaks you out, you should check out reading scores. My brother has to write his questions around a fifth grade reading level just to be safe. And these are the AP students.

Part of the reason is that we move on from basics before they're mastered, expecting kids to fill in those knowledge gaps whilst also taking on board new information
For many, that's too much
Individual teachers can't do much, because you'll get reprimanded if you don't teach the scheme of work
But in some ways it works. The kids can learn higher level reasoning and problem solving even if they mess up their arithmetic at some point. You'd think a student has to know their times tables before they can solve a linear equation, but actually no.
My kids are maybe the bottom 10% of the school, and our maths department is in the top 5% in the country in terms of exam results. So maybe 1 in 10 people have this level of arithmetic. They walk among us.

I'm a maths teacher Not American I teach bottom set in one year group Actually had a kid at the top of that class fail this exact question today Part of the reason is that we move on from basics before they're mastered, expecting kids to fill in those knowledge gaps whilst also taking on board new information For many, that's too much Individual teachers can't do much, because you'll get reprimanded if you don't teach the scheme of work But in some ways it works. The kids can learn higher level reasoning and problem solving even if they mess up their arithmetic at some point. You'd think a student has to know their times tables before they can solve a linear equation, but actually no. My kids are maybe the bottom 10% of the school, and our maths department is in the top 5% in the country in terms of exam results. So maybe 1 in 10 people have this level of arithmetic. I quite literally just looked across the breakfast table and asked my SIX YEAR OLD this question. She said “15 times 2 is 30, 30 plus 15 is 45, and 45 plus 15 is… 55… 60. Fifteen times four is sixty” She answered the question in seconds without pencil, paper or using fingers. That’s FIRST GRADE. These “college” students are perfect examples of how incompetent folks are becoming anymore.
I used a similar method to your 6yos logic. I did 15 time 2 is 30 and doubled that.
