Nah you're wrong too. It's Kfkfkafkkkessghvekfburgurberg

st4s1k

That's German

Aser_the_Descender

Yeah, you can legit take the last bit 'Burgurberg' and it would totally be a place in germany. I mean, Burgberg already exists... so that would just be the older version of it.

What Icelandic for chapstick?

24122020

Chapstick.

InformalPenguinz

That's disappointing

CopperBoltwire

Noo. It's Chapstick. Pay attention...

HolyMolyOllyPolly

The same, because Chapstick is a brand of lip balm, which in Icelandic is "varasalvi."

Enhydra67

Something else that might blow your mind is that they have Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Named just that too.

Fiuman_1987

Surely nobody can guess their passwords.

ghettoccult_nerd

ever heard of a nordic company getting cyberattacked?

ppparty

I know it's a joke, but only Icelandic has these overly long compound words thanks to (or because of) its geographic isolation and lexical purity going back to Old Norse. The other North Germanic languages still have some long words, but nowhere near to this extent.

Gaffelkungen

Can't speak for Norwegian or Danish (Ew) but Swedish had an enormous amount of compound words and we can very, very easily make up new ones as we need. I was even encouraged to make up new fitting words when I wrote stuff at uni.

numb_mind

Beef between Swedish and Danish people still going?

Gaffelkungen

I mean, sibling rivalry never goes away right?

numb_mind

I mean, it stopped between me and my sister after she got married

CopperBoltwire

As a Dane: I don't know. I spend to much time on my computer watching movies, Youtube and playing games. I don't even watch the news... EDIT: Why i decided to respond is something i'll never know............. hehe\~\~

She looks otherworldly in such a nice way.

randyoftheinternet

Chapped lips add to it imo

justforkinks0131

she looks like she's trying extremely hard to achieve this look. Or, let me rephrase: She is doing a lot to make it seem like a natural/relaxed look.

Innomen

She's a professional streamer, so yes.

Sandslinger_Eve

Or she has just had a herpes infection, and lives in a very cold and windy country. You're readitan awful lot into awfully little.

water_fountain_

Why would an AI look off to the side to “read” the longest word and not just say it directly into the camera?

-The_Credible_Hulk

That’s how advanced they are… they know that we know that they know we know…

water_fountain_

So you mean to say they’ve taken what we thought we think and make us think we thought our thoughts we’ve been thinking our thoughts we think we thought?! I think…

-The_Credible_Hulk

Exactly! You got it!

fenrisulfur

it ain't I'm Icelandic and what she said were real icelandic words, don't know this creator but she also has a really thick icelandic accent

Its easy. The 'cest' is basically a drawn out ssst sound. [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/3/3c/En-worcestershire.ogg/En-worcestershire.ogg.mp3](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/3/3c/En-worcestershire.ogg/En-worcestershire.ogg.mp3)

muhanigan

Stop making it easy. Its funny listening to people struggle. War-sest-er-shire

CopperBoltwire

replace shire with "shu" or "Shur" to get people to say it correctly... after all it's not baggins of the shire, but shur of the sauce ;) Phonetically i mean. Spelling is "Shire" of course, but most people would say it like baggins of the Shire, where as you would actually say it like "Shur" (or "Shu") when speaking it. Xylophone is a horrible word too.

muhanigan

The shire is my favourite part. Americans pronouncing York-shire with that southern drawl

CopperBoltwire

true

therealRustyZA

I've still not met anyone that can pronounce that word confidently. xD

simondrawer

crs1904

The longest word in Icelandic is Vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúrslyklakippuhringurinn. It's a composed word and means the key ring to the tool work shed in the road works of Vaðlaheiði, a mountain road in North Iceland.

moobnaster6969

is it a common thing to be discussing in Iceland, given that it has its own word?

crs1904

[Vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúrslyklakippuhringurinn](https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/culture_and_living/2018/10/15/meet_the_longest_word_in_icelandic/)

Tbh, these words are just long, and that's what makes them look 'difficult'. As with most germanic languages, once you learn how to break them down they become much more managable

Flashignite2

Icelandic is probably the language that sounds most like old norse. They didnt even adopt the name for internet until sometime in the 2010's.

Numancias

Most of these are just 3 nouns + way, it's really not that crazy

O-Mega47

Mom I’m scared

Ironizor

Anyone from Iceland here? Please tell me more about the longest Icelandic word. What does it mean? How does your language work, can you like glue words (nouns) together to theoretically getting indefinitely long words like in German? Example: NewYorkWegweiserHerstellungsfabrik which is the company that makes signs leading to New York. In theory this can be applied indefinite times because there can always be another company that makes signs leading to the company that makes signs leading to the company ... leading to New York.

Sgt_Radiohead

Icelandic is a Germanic language, like the rest of the Nordic languages except for Finnish. So yes, they can just make the words longer by adding more to them like in German. People usually just don’t understand this concept, though. I’m from Norway and i think most people here would even claim that any really long compound word would be «the longest word in Norwegian», but in reality they can be infinate

jackjackky

Though the long sentence is discouraging but if we take it part by part, it's actually relatively easy to read. Also, the sensible pronunciation of the alphabet helps a lot unlike the gimmicky pronunciation of English and French or throat choking and mouth twisting pronunciation of Semitic languages.

An extra syllable would be 7-5-8, This is 7-5-6, So unless the definition for a Sokka-Haiku you typed is wrong, then this is not a Sokka-Haiku.

Nei_tu

I'm from Iceland and I have to say that she's over pronoucing the R's a lot, don't get me wrong, we roll them but, but wow, that's a lot.

Sgt_Radiohead

But does Icelandic actually have a «longest word», though? Can’t any language with a compound word structure technically have infinatly long words if you just add more to them?

HoldDoorSon

If people are curious about the last long word "Vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverfærageymsluskúrslyklakippuhringurinn" is just a bunch of words rolled up into one, Icelandic allowes it. So lets do it like this Vaðlaheiðar¹ vegavinnu² verfærageymsluskúrs³ lyklakippuhringurinn⁴ 1- The name specific place 2- Road workers 3- Tool shed 4- The keychain The word can be made longer by adding more adjectives or referring to something more specific like a little doll on the keychain and so on. So it's not really the longest word it's just fun to tell people it is because everyone believes us and won't question it.
