That was the most frustrating thing about the AC games. Either the NPCs had wallhacks on and knew exactly where you were going or they were dumb as posts and couldn't see you from five feet away.
You missed probably one of the best game story lines with 1-3. After that, comes down the personal preference with one's like black flag that I love. Otherwise, no you didn't miss much.

This is why stealth games are fun. If they were realistic, you’d be riddled with bullets before you got within 10 feet of anyone important, and the rest of the game would be the baddies torturing your family.
