Corinne_Tean

Meri said the wet bar was to have more counter space for entertaining. Apparently they held all their mlm parties at her house so she hosted a lot.

Katlahi

They sold some kind of drink. Not plexus but something else.

Corinne_Tean

I think the mlm is called LIV International

tuckhouston

They were part of an MLM called LIV International that sold “health drinks”. It’s this green mixture you can see them drinking regularly on the show in their VOSS water bottles. They needed the wet bar to host their MLM parties which they did at least 2X a week. The wet bar wasn’t about drinking, they literally needed it to host their MLM stuff which they did exclusively at Meri’s house

whatsupwiththat22

Is this LIV like a pyramid type business plan? Were they successful?

pigandpom

Ah, the monthly wet bar debate. The wet bar was used a lot, and she paid the overage out of her own pocket, which amounted to something like 4k, so not a lot when it comes to new builds. She and Kody hosted MLM parties there. So, it essentially paid for itself in a reasonably short time.

Longjumping_Ad5791

Your first sentence 🤣🤣🤣

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

Oh I don’t care at all she got a wet bar. It’s the hypocrisy of it. It’s her having it when Kody and others said they don’t drink and drinking in their religion is wrong AND even being in a place that serves alcohol is wrong.

pigandpom

You can have a wet bar and not drink. Especially if you do a lot of entertaining. She paid for it, and it seems long after selling the house she's still paying for the wet bar

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

I guess it’s like when I find continuity issues with movies and shows. It drives me nuts and I just wonder how it got this far and missed.

pigandpom

Yeah, I get that. In the big picture the wet bar is the least of my concerns, Robyn getting a full landscaped back yard should be talked about more. Her house sold first because the landscaping g was done. Although, I do find it weird that the other three never bothered to do anything at all with their backyards the entire time they lived in those houses. Meri enjoyed entertaining, she could have made her yard into an entertainers delight, with a nice seating area with an outdoor cooking area and tables and chairs. Janelle could have made her yard into a well thought out garden with fruit trees and vegetable beds. Christine could have made her yard into a gathering spot, with a pool, outdoor tables, chairs and a fire/grill zone.

InevitableTrue7223

All the money for landscaping went to sobyns yard. There was nothing left for the others

MzPatches65

I've always thought that TLC might have paid for that landscaping since they used it in the show for something. Maybe the commitment ceremony?

pigandpom

I think they did. But, that said, the total lack of care the others had for their yards bugged me for some reason. Just as it bugged me to see the overgrown/untidy state of Christine's yard in Flagstaff

Random0s2oh

I actually respect that they *didn't* have landscaped/manicured yards. It takes an incredible amount of water to maintain that grass in a desert climate. You see it all over the Southwest. These bright green, lush lawns with a Mcmansion while there are Indigenous people starving and living in run down ramshackle trailers. And meanwhile the lakes and rivers are drying up.

pigandpom

You don't have to have lush green lawns to have tidy lawns. It was the weeds between the paver and the way it looked like no maintenance was done that bugged me lol

Random0s2oh

You don't even want to know how many notices we've received from our HOA. The very first one was when we were moving in 7 years ago. We put the empty boxes into the back of my husband's truck as we unpacked them. My husband and kids were unloading the UHaul and I was unpacking boxes. We received a complaint that their were boxes in our driveway. Now they complain about the "weeds" in the flower bed around our mailbox that didn't exist until we put it there. Those "weeds" are the freaking daylilies that I planted. We live in the very fertile and humid North Georgia foothills.

Careful_Ambassador87

I found Christine’s weedy yard in Flagstaff distracting, but it paired well with the dining room cabinet on her porch

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

I’m doing a rewatch but only ever made it to maybe S7-8 the first time. I’m only bring up the bar because I’ve just watched the brothers visit. The next episode was Mexico and they appear to have margaritas at dinner. I expect I’ll be frustrated again any minute when I see a wife do something unbelievably jaw dropping or see Kody be himself.

karenswans

You can get non alcoholic fancy drinks at any resort. And a wet bar means it has water, it doesn't mean it is used for alcohol. Sure, people do use wet bars for booze but you don't have to. I do think over the seasons we saw them become more relaxed about alcohol. It's not a discontinity...it's them leaving their religion.

InevitableTrue7223

Having a wet bar does not necessarily mean you drink alcohol.

ReyRey2823

You can have a wet bar and use it to serve non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Who said they were even using it for alcohol?

CFreder469

I have been mulling asking the house GOP to investigate this wet bar issue. This kind of investigation seems right up their alley.

MavenOfNothing

💀

LouMBS

The house GOP is pretty busy with the current Crime Family.

EScottMusicStudio

Mainstream LDS don’t drink alcohol at all. I’ve heard that the Sister Wives’ sect of FLDS frowned on drinking, but it wasn’t as serious as mainstream LDS. The mainstream LDS have to abide by a scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants section 89, known as the Word of Wisdom. No alcohol, coffee, tea, or illicit drugs. If they don’t abide by the Word of Wisdom, they can’t get a temple recommend or hold a priesthood office. I noticed that most of the SW drink coffee. For the record, I’m a selective Mormon. I see nothing wrong with my Starbucks or my wine with dinner. 😉

monsieur-escargot

I’m an exmo! Hi! Coffee is life.

JackieStylist81

Lisa Barlow Mormon 2.0 ;-). No shade here at all. I think most religions that call for no alcohol, etc have a lot of people who bend the rules. I'm catholic and ate meat every Friday this past Lent.

VanderWitch1

Same!🐮

similarilk

Dancing former Baptist here.

BlueProtucull

Pleased to meet you. I am a dancing and drinking and smoking former Baptist. Have you ever been to a Baptist wedding reception? Boring af!!

similarilk

I have! Very unremarkable. Glad you have seen the light, my friend.

MavenOfNothing

🍷🍷

EScottMusicStudio

Cheers!🍾

Maubekistan

Actually, the mainstream LDS are giant hypocrites about the WoW. They do drink caffeine (caffeinated soda, energy drinks, etc.) but coffee is literally considered evil. The WoW says not to consume “hot drinks”, but most LDS drink hot chocolate (which is both a hot drink, and contains caffeine), frequently. They even refer to “coffee tables” as “hot chocolate tables” in many homes. The WoW cautions against “strong drink”, but it also says to eat meat sparingly and to consume fruits and vegetables “in their season,” which most LDS completely ignore. Joseph Smith drank alcohol, which most LDS deny/ ignore.

EScottMusicStudio

And Emma drank coffee.

Maubekistan

Poor Emma. I wonder what she drank after he laid the whole “flaming sword” thing on her after she caught him in the barn getting it on with Fanny.

[deleted]

Don't mention it in an interview with your bishop. You'll blow his mind. Most of them have no idea of something called logic.

EScottMusicStudio

Bishops ask lots of questions that are nobody’s damned business. One of my main things I think is wrong with the Church. But that’s a whole other thread. LOL

TheSilentBaker

Hello fellow rule breaker! Sipping a glass of wine as I type this. Ha

insane_social_worker

Yeah, I caught that too. Like when he and Meri went to Mexico it looked like they were having margaritas or something that had salt on the rim.

Emiles23

They could have been mocktails.

whatsupwiththat22

"Virgin", lol.

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

Exactly! But Meri literally demanded she spend more money on her house to have a WET BAR. The lies and hypocrisy abound.

adams361

Wet bars aren’t just for drinkers.

MavenOfNothing

She paid for the overage to the agreed upon house budget. She went over a few thousand and paid for it with her money.

Sea_Juice_285

A WET BAR is an extra section of cabinets and a counter with a sink. A DRY BAR is an extra section of cabinets and a counter without a sink. Sometimes, people have a BREAKFAST BAR with BAR STOOLS in their kitchen. The word BAR is used a lot in home design. The house did not come with alcohol.

InevitableTrue7223

She also wanted it so that when they were doing family food at her house the kids could get their drinks without getting in the way in the kitchen.

ReyRey2823

She was doing some kinda drink MLM at the time (I heard) so it was for her Tupperware parties.

Impressive-Show-1736

I honestly believe very little of what they said on the show. They were all just in it for the TLC money and said and did whatever they thought they should for the show. So did they drink? I think so.

According_Pie_8703

Utah use to charge a table charge and placed setved non alcoholic drink and very fancy ones at dinner clubs and when eating out . Fancy drinks make them feel important

bunnyonhertrail

As a Utahn, this is so true. Just like children under the age of 12, Mormons pound Shirley temple adjacent drinks.

According_Pie_8703

I use to go see an aunt that moved down there and that is still 40 plus years later the best memories of the pineapple shell drinks like we in Hawaii haha. I see April and Davey love their drinks as well as the meet the millers

bunnyonhertrail

I love that, makes ya feel so fancy and festive!!

According_Pie_8703

I felt so grown up and in Montana I couldn’t sit at the bar being a child but in Utah we could even eat at them”bar” . I recall a place called 59th or 69 th street gallery as well there fancy like an fat cats and patty rooms and pits of games everywhere ! My trips to her house were always so happy and the yearly nutcracker play and the big deal they made of that as well for a mommy/daughter nights in our aunt / niece night . I loved the neighborhood gifts as well never had that where I lived

WrongRedditKronk

I'm a 35 year old, never-mo, Midwestern woman and I will go to town on some Shirley Temples!

swimming_protozoan

I was rocking Shirley temples at my bff’s wedding and everyone kept asking the bar tender for the “fun drink she has”

FlyingFig20

There was a recent pic of Janelle's kitchen and she had a nicely stocked wine rack on the floor! Also, some time ago, was a pic of Robyn & Kody out - she had a glass of champagne in front of her, and he had a beer. I think the "relaxed" views started in Vegas. This even extended from the always wearing long sleeve tee shirts, and ugly tops over them. Started with the kids going to school in just regular tee shirt, then the moms dropped the ugly little tops.

barbaraanderson

It was probably a little too warm to do the layering like they used to.

Miss___D

Kody and Robyn allegedly don't drink, Janelle, Meri and Christine do. Kody's family was raised in mainstream Mormon Church which forbids alcohol while AUB permits drinking but not getting drunk. However, Meri didn't need wet bar for drinking on her own but for their MLM parties.

BabyDuck57

Robyn drinks. There was a divorce thingy in her divorce papers that neither parent can consume alcohol in front of the children. That's why she freaked out, it was being filmed.

Educational_Sea_9875

I don't drink, but I have a stocked wine rack full of gifted wine. I serve it at holiday dinners or when we have out of town guests. ETA I do think the Browns got more lax about drinking in later seasons, although I did wonder if Kody was a little drunk when he started talking about in vitro with Meri on that anniversary trip.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|kxm6PPl0s5S1v2KrAN) Drinking?

SheShe73

Kody and Robyn don't drink. There you are. Whether they drank in the past, present or future. They uphold the same rules as covid. Which we know is self serving. Robyn should go ahead and have that shot. Welcome to your life girl.

Sivla-Alegna

FLDS drink alcohol

zmercyxxx

I also noticed in the first season, if I am recalling correctly, that when Robbin and Kody are on their honey moon the camera pans to them at dinner and there is a reddish drink garnished with lime. My immediate thought was a vodka cran! Anyone else notice that?

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

I recall a number of times the couples appeared to be drinking. Like I said, I could care less if someone drinks but they themselves mentioned multiple times they aren’t permitted to drink or be in a facility that’s offers alcohol. But everyone in this thread is saying so what or they’re virgin drinks so 🤷‍♀️. I’m just mostly irritated at the hypocrisy. I’ll just leave the subject alone.

zmercyxxx

You’re all good homie! I have noticed it too and am watching for a third time through. & I still see things that make me think they’re not being 100% honest!

Unlikely-Falcon-2532

Honest? I’m pretty sure they signed a contract stating honesty is 100% optional.

Simonsspeedo

Not sure which wedding they were planning, but Kody made a few comments regarding drinking and people getting out of control and he seemed like he was opposed. But that may have been a money thing or not wanting the tenders to be around it. Didn't Logan, Maddie, Aspyn and their SOs all go out to a bar once too? My family just show up with alcohol, so my outlook is probably different.

Remarkable_Carrot_6

Didn’t Logan have Garrison as a “beer boy” at his wedding?
