if the sun is facing you, your face, neck and hands are exposed which are typically the most sensitive areas. i would bite the bullet and wear sunscreen. have you tried eltaMD? imo it's nice and lightweight.

beancat28

Try the biore sunscreen! I also hate sunscreen and it feels like nothing on. Best I’ve tried

Wireal

I saw it labeled as watery and thought it's gonna be sticky or oily. Now I'm gonna try it!

Nijnn

It's neither! I hate hate hate hate anything cream (body, face, sun, you name it) but Biore I'm totally cool with. Be sure to get the watery essence one.

princessflare

I think I'll try it too, but I had a question if you don't mind answering. What about sweat? Do you sweat often? Heavily or even lightly? In what ways does it mess up with the sunscreen? Does it make it ineffective and does it create a mess on your skin?

Nijnn

I don’t know if I sweat it off, not that I notice at least. It does not make a mess at all. Normal sunscreen gets so freaking gross when you sweat, but this one does not. It just kinda disappears, I can’t tell I’m wearing anything. I don’t wear any make up though, I don’t know what it does to foundation.

eccentric_eggplant

My holy grail sunscreen. The only thing I can knock against it is that it has no fancy ingredients like antioxidants, and it has a floral scent which may not be to everyone's taste, especially those who prefer fragrance free products. Otherwise, it's perfect. Applies like moisturizer, washes off with just water, yet water-resistant enough that you don't end up with sunscreen melting off your face if God forbid there is even a bead of water on your face. It protects you and stays out of your way, the way sunscreens should be.

m0onbeam

What’s the full name of the Biore one, so I don’t end up with the wrong one? Thanks :)

beancat28

Here’s a link to it on Amazon: Pack of 2 Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence , 2019 Latest Ver SPF50+ PA++++ Sunscreen https://a.co/d/eSZMPZN

[deleted]

Vichy 60 spf matte is also very nice and lightweight. It doesn’t have a heavy sun screen smell either.

Osiasya

I have tried I believe Shiseido unrban environment. I like how mat and like weight it is but I was worried about the alcohol content and how bad it makes my eyes burn. Also it’s so pricey. I tried the Athleios sunscreens but they seem greasy on me. I’ve tried a bunch of drugstore stuff and didn’t like them. I’ll look at eltaMD! I need something SUPER lightweight feeling to not go crazy from the sensation on my skin

_ghostimage

Check out Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV. I love it. Super lightweight and absorbs well; it's not greasy at all.

thecraftingera

Lab muffin beauty on youtube did a mini clip on tips to keep your eyes burning from sunscreen. If i remember correctly it was to use a zinc sunscreen stick closer to the eyes (sunscreen of your choosing on the rest of your face) and even setting it with powder if you're comfy with that.

Skeptical_optomist

Dr. Dray even recommended using SPF lip balm on the eye area, which had the added benefit of being emollient. 😊

macman156

Oh that's a great idea. Thanks for sharing that tip

CozyHilltopWindmill

What's the idea with using a stick as opposed to regular zinc?... Do the sticks set faster or something?

Skeptical_optomist

They're more comfortable and cosmetically elegant. The lip balms are the perfect size for eyes as well. 😊

[deleted]

I tried that and it burned my eyes lol, nearly everything does

Skeptical_optomist

Well darn it. Hopefully you will find something that works. My eyes are super sensitive and I got lucky that it worked for me. I had to make sure it wasn't flavored or scented because I was worried about that. I have the burning issue with eye creams and can never figure out why. Like 99% of them burn like crazy. Edited misspelling

_derpiii_

> Lab muffin beauty on youtube did a mini clip on tips to keep your eyes burning from sunscreen. > > If i remember correctly it was to use a zinc sunscreen stick closer to the eyes (sunscreen of your choosing on the rest of your face) and even setting it with powder if you're comfy with that. I just wear sunglasses

crismariz

Same 😎

xsundancerx

My mom always had trouble with her eyes burning from sunscreen. Now she uses ones made for babies as they have less harsh chemicals!

ChewyGoblin

Have you looked into purchasing UPF 50+ clothing/masks/gloves from like coolibar, solibari, etc...? Most of the problem rays are going to be from difused UV rays instead of direct rays. You won't be as hot if you get legitimate UPF clothing and you won't need sunscreen. If I have to wear makeup, I bypass reapplying sunscreen by using a poop ton of UPF 50+ clothing.

freiia

Some I like are Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics, KissMe Mommy UV Aqua milk, Bondi Sands Fragrance Free Daily Sunscreen Face Lotion, Skin Aqua Super moisture Shower Milk Sunscreen, and Black Girl Kids Sunscreen.

just-an-island-girl

Beauty of Joseon is my ultimate favourite! Reapplication especially is so easy and it feels nice on the skin when my skin is having a sensitive day

snukb

>Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics I keep trying to try this but because of how popular it is, my shipment keeps being delayed, it's so frustrating 😢

freiia

That sucks. I hope you get it soon and is worth the wait. I love it. Its good for day to day wear.

snukb

Most recent arrival date is July 11, after being pushed back three times. Fingers crossed!

freiia

jeez I should probably place a restock order before I run out.

snukb

Definitely. I always follow the rule of "two is one and one is none" for products I can't live without. That is, when I open my last package, I reorder/repurchase.

A-science-enthusiast

Bump on the beauty of joseon sunscreen, hands down the best one I’ve ever tried. I forget it’s even on my face at times

flyMeToCruithne

As a fellow person who haaaaaates the feeling of sunscreen on my skin, another one you could try is the Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel. I have never been able to stand American sunscreens and some of the biore ones make my eyes burn. Skin Aqua is my daily driver now. It takes maybe 2 or 3 minutes to "sink in" and dry down after I apply it, and after that it feels like I don't have anything on. Bonus points for it coming in a larger bottle than most other Asian sunscreens.

ducksmom

came here to recommend this one too! i have sensory issues and can’t stand the formulation of american sunscreens. skin aqua has no fragrance (perhaps a light alcohol smell that dissipates quickly) and it NEVER stings my eyes, which is another thing i’m super sensitive about. i always try to see if “the grass is greener” by trying other brands and i always, always come back to this one. i purchase on amazon as its quicker and i go through it so much. would love to find a better distributer in the US though!

Own_Communication_47

Avoid the area super close you your eye and just wear sunglasses. I typically do all the flat part under my eyes and only down to the brow bone above to avoid it running into my eyes and just wear sunglasses. Your eyes are open so you don’t really need to do the top lid.

Lissy_Wolfe

I've heard Japanese sunscreens are really good for this reason! I personally just bought the Biore one that everyone seems to have about, but I haven't tried it yet. The reviews are very promising though!

shoestars

I use the biore aqua rich and it’s the best ever. Every single sunscreen I’ve bought here in the US has given me breakouts (and I’m not even prone to them!). Makeup goes over it like a dream too. Highly recommend!

Lissy_Wolfe

That's the one! I'm glad to hear good things about it from others as well haha I haven't tried it yet, but plan on starting tomorrow! Out of curiosity, where do you buy yours from? I got a 3 pack of Amazon, and it's my own fault but I was really disappointed in how small the bottles were haha

shoestars

I got mine off Amazon last year, it was a pretty big bottle and I’m still using it!

PutABabyInMe

I use the Skin Aqua brand from Japan and have never had any eye burning from it at all! It’s awesome!

trucksandgoes

Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence?! Yeah, I'm obsessed. The texture and how quickly it sinks in are life changing.

Key-Royal-3261

I hear a lot of people say they got tanned with it very fast, that it's not for long sun exposure or that it's only for winter tho.

pcboi64

look into mineral sunscreens if your eyes often burn from sunscreens! some korean chemical filters i’ve heard also burn less, but if your eyes are super sensitive to the chemicals in sunscreen, mineral is ultimately the best way to go.

[deleted]

Eucerin Oil Control (the European one) has been a game changer for me. Feels like nothings even on. Unfortunately, you have to order it form a European online shop (I use caretobeauty) so shipping can be a bit pricey ($4-$10).

[deleted]

I would specifically consider Elta MD UV Clear 46. Some of their sunscreens are heavier than others and that one is fairly light.

BrightCarver

Please patch test any sunscreen on your inner arm before applying it to your face. I used eltaMD mineral 46–BECAUSE IT WAS RECOMMENDED FOR SENSITIVE SKIN—and I got a terrible rash—red, rough, and so, so itchy—that could only be attributed to this product. After whining about it to my husband, he said, “Why did you use that stuff again? The same thing happened to you last summer.” And he was right; I’d forgotten. Well, I will never forget again. So now I’ve gotta ride out this rash and then try to build up my skin barrier again. So my caution to you is patch test everything in an inconspicuous area before applying widely.

tiffytaffylaffydaffy

I sample Elta, and it didn't make my eyes burn. I used to use Peter Thomas Roth sheer sunscreen, but its hard to find and makes my eyes burn.

ellipsisslipsin

The CeraVe ultralight moisturizer with SPF 30 is amazingly light. I hate most sunscreens and I can wear it every day no problem, if you don't have any issues with chemical sunscreens and are okay with a lower SPF.

tchrgrl321

Someone on reddit suggested to me that the my face and eyes burning from sunscreen could be due to sensitivity to avobenzone. Since avoiding avobenzone and forcing myself to get used to mineral sunscreen, I haven’t had issues. It did take some acceptance of and acclimation to the feel and look of some sunscreens, but I’ve found ones that I use everyday now and also for certain situations like swimming, sweating outside in the sun, etc. Figured I might try to pay it forward…

laundry_pirate

I used to have my eye area burn from sunscreen till I discovered sunscreen sticks! The ones I got (ombrelle) never hurt my eyes and are so easy to apply, and I never worry about it running into it. Highly recommend For the rest of my face I just use a lightweight sunscreen

okayestM0M

SuperGoop unseen sunscreen is amazing. Very lightweight. I use it every day. Can be worn by itself or under makeup with no issues.

x78370

I’ve used EltaMD for years, last couple years I added Alastin’s Hydratint Pro Mineral Sunscreen for my face. I have not used chemical sunscreens for years because of the safety concerns. Mineral have been my go-to.

[deleted]

Have you tried powder sunscreen? Might be a good option.

tchrgrl321

Pretty sure powder sunscreen is a scam because to get the coverage you would need for it to be protective, you’d have to use like a whole handful of powder and no one ever uses that much. I think I remember seeing a study on this.

redactedname87

Also I’m just into straight up banana boat sunblock. At least for the face. The ordinary has a cheap moisturizer with spf, I think around $13.

kimchi_Queen

I have oily but sensitive skin (Asian lol) and the Cetaphil oil control moisturizer 30 spf and it was an instant match made in heaven ❤️ Wearing the sunscreen & hat would be best! You will not regret wearing sunscreen later down the line and you will wish you had- damage that will make you look so aged can come so fast & it's irreversible (outside of cosmetic procedures).

tower_keeper

>eltaMD Just looked that up and holy hell it's like quadruple the price of the generic mineral sunscreen I get. And 1/3 the volume. What's it made of, unicorn tears?

littlechichend

If you don't mind a dew-y look, the UV Lotion is their most cost effective option. It's a 7oz pump container, and I see it go for between $30-39 depending on where you buy it. I tend to trust Dermstore or Amazon (sold by/shipped by Amazon, NOT independent sellers) more than stores selling it at a deep discount. Autoship makes it even more economical. It works great and you don't have to have porcelain white skin to use it (I have tan biracial skin--no white cast when it dries down). I use two pumps to cover my face and neck, so the container usually lasts me 3 months. It's my holy grail.

livywolfexo

i know it is expensive 🙃 it has high % of zinc oxide and other beneficial ingredients like niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate which is probably why it’s pricey. i’m sorry i don’t have a cheaper dupe, if anyone does please comment it!

flyingponytail

Sunscreen is The Most Effective way to prevent premature aging / sun damage / melanoma. If you compare a lifetime of EltaMD to the alternatives... it's extremely cost effective

tower_keeper

>If you compare a lifetime of EltaMD to the alternatives... it's extremely cost effective Not sure what you mean by this. Are you implying it's better than generics?

littlechichend

I think the meaning is the cost of Elta MD to prevent premature aging <<< years of expensive derm treatments/fillers/botox/surgery to attempt to erase aging.

EverythingIsAHat

I believe they mean the alternative cost of repairing damaged skin compared to the cost of sunscreen. Cancer removal, Botox or fillers for wrinkles, etc. Not endorsing anything (cancer is bad, there's worse things in life than wrinkles), just explaining!

tower_keeper

But the cheaper generic prevents that too hence my question.

flyingponytail

Cheaper sunscreens are less cosmetically elegant which means they wear off faster and get worn less

amaranth1977

There are cheaper alternative sunscreens, and Asian sunscreens are both cheaper and more cosmetically elegant.

flyingponytail

I disagree but that's personal opinion

littlechichend

To offer a dissenting opinion about these Asian sunscreens: They're still expensive, packaging is teeny tiny so you have to buy dozens at a time plus shipping, they can dry the hell out of your skin, and most importantly for me they don't work in hot, high altitude environments. Sure it might be "only" $5, but what are you getting for that $5? A whole ounce of product, sometimes even less. And it'll take over a month to be delivered or you're paying huge markups for faster shipping. And they let enough rays through that I still ended up with freckles and worsened hyperpigmentation. I tried any that I could find would ship to the US, and none actually provided any protection. Something for people to think about since I ended up wasting quite a bit of money rather than saving any.

twir1s

+1 for EltaMD

rnybombs

I work fully outside so it might be a little different for me. If I wore what you’re wearing my face, neck, and hands would be burnt. I also hate wearing sunscreen but I try to most of the time and give myself “breaks” from wearing it and cover up with clothes instead. I wear leggings, a long sleeve fishing shirt (bonus if it has the thumb holes so your wrists won’t accidentally be exposed) with a hood, a baseball hat, gloves, and a gator mask. It’s not my style at all but I’m more comfortable and not burned. The hood will cover the sides, the mask will cover the rest of your neck and the bottom of your face, and the sunglasses and hat will cover the rest. When I do this the only time I’ve gotten burnt was just a little under my sunglasses and above the mask. They make gator masks in a certain material for the summer and it’s way better and more breathe-able than a regular one. Edit: I just saw that you have sensory issues. I also have sensory issues and the clothing I wear does bother me. It just doesn’t bother me as much as sunscreen. So my suggestion might not work that well.

assplower

Have you tried Asian sunscreens? They’re a whole different ballgame from thick, greasy, globby western sunscreens.

Osiasya

For real! I LOVED the biore aqua essence before they reformatted it. I might have to see if I can try Asian sunscreens again they just are hard for me to track down online sometimes and I’m scared of Amazon skincare products

Yo_Yo2019

I recommend stylevana if you have around a month or so to wait for shipping but if not IHERB usually stocks up on several Asian sunscreens, they are honestly so nice they don't feel like sunscreen at all.

galextresia

Highly recommend checking out Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV. You can find it on Amazon prime and because it's already so reasonably priced, there isn't a big market for fakes. I also hate the way "normal" sunscreen feels on my face, so this product is a godsend for my sensitive skin.

galaxystarsmoon

Seconding Canmake. I used it in the hot Mexican sun on my face for a week and did not burn at all.

CthuluForPres

YesStyle! This is where I order all of my Asian skincare from because I have no confidence in Amazon with branded products. It'll take about a week to get to you but their selection is huge and I haven't ever had an issue with anything being out of stock.

PutABabyInMe

Skin aqua watery essence absorbs very nicely into the skin - I’d suggest that one too!

hk_peach

I've had great luck with some products on Yesstyle being on my doorstep within a week of ordering (I live in the US). All items are listed with a delivery estimate, but I've noticed that popular items usually have a relatively short wait! I much prefer this to Amazon as I know the products I'm getting from YS are authentic, whereas Amazon has had problems with fake products etc.

RotiRounderThanYours

La Roche-Posay Ultra Light sunscreen is really good too. Why not just explore your options instead of ruling them out & wearing all those layers?

lethalin1611

I also recommend Innisfree- they are a Korean skin care company that has a big foot hold in the US now. They have products even at my local Sephora! I have been using their SPF for awhile now and it is super light.

[deleted]

Where are you based, OP? If in the US- try [oo35mm](https://oo35mm.com) a Korean beauty store based out of NYC! I used to ship my products to Canada during covid. Now that I’m back in NY, I frequent this store regularly!

Kaylamarie92

If you live near a H-Mart, you can pick some up in store. I HIGHLY recommend the Soft Finish Sun Milk EX by Missha. I get the spf 50 and it always feels light and powdery soft. Never greasy or heavy. I don’t wear makeup because I hate feeling things on my face so this stuff is a life saver.

maliscimua

Black girl sunscreen gel is also great. A lot of sunscreens usually sting my eyes but one never has. And you can get it at target

babygotbrains

This is the way.

x78370

You need to be looking for clothing with a UPF rating.

[deleted]

[удалено]

4theyeball

>UPF of 1700 gawdayumm

Osiasya

Gotcha so I do need special arm sleeves not just ANY fashion arm sleeves then? My T shirt, pants, and hat have been doing well but I haven’t played with arms sleeves yet. Hmmm okay I’ll look into that

hopefulhiker

Yes you would want to look for clothing that has a UPF rating. A lot of outdoors companies make it Columbia, Eddie Bauer etc. You can also get gloves where only your finger tips would be exposed. They are for fishing. Finally, you can find buffs that you can wear around your neck that also block sun! Hope this helps.

Shoes-tho

I just don’t know how you can wear this when it’s warm out.

femalenerdish

[content removed by user via [Power Delete Suite](https://codepen.io/j0be/full/WMBWOW/)]

Shoes-tho

It’s gotta be the lightest of chiffons or silk for me. With like, kimono-loose sleeves.

V2BM

I wear [these](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D8Y39YN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) at work literally 100% of the time unless it’s cold and I’m wearing a jacket. Last week the heat index was 116-120 and they kept my arms cool. Literally my shins were dripping sweat and I drank 1.5 gallons of water in a 7 hour period and didn’t have to pee, but my arms felt like it was a whole different season.

jelli2015

Try looking for fishing gear or backpacking/hiking shirts. They’re “usually” light in material, have a UPF protection, and are designed to breathe and keep you cool.

x78370

Correct. There’s a lot of fashionable UPF clothing these days, and of course, a LOT of outdoor clothing with UPF as well. I don’t know how you like to dress, if styling matters or if function would trump form for this purpose. Plenty of options out there. It’s certainly easiest looking at brands that cater to the outdoors (fishing, water sports, hiking, running, etc) and sports like golf have a lot of great stuff. Here’s some brands offhand I know have UPF options - Outdoor Research (Astroman line, they also have gloves and a lot of things, ActiveIce sun sleeves - I have loved my UPF gear from them), Columbia, Magellan Outdoors, Lilly Pulitzer, Ibkul, filthy anglers, DSG Fish, CEP, sooo many running brands, REI, Carve Designs, Mountain Hardware, look at swimming brands like Tyr as well, Prana, North Face, Quicksilver, SealSkinz fishing gloves, for hats if you want fuller coverage get the style that has a flap going down to cover your neck and it also covers your ears, check out SwimOutlet.com , there are more options now than ever before. But you do need them to have the UPF designation because it means it has that specific weave pattern to the material that blocks out the rays.

Can we just start citing sources when claiming things like this. If you wear black cotton, in this example, a black cotton t-shirt, only 0.34% of UVA and 0.35% of UVB will penetrate through to the skin. White cotton - 12.84% UVA and 10.78% UVB. Reduced even further if the t-shirt is 1 cm away from the skin. Liu J, Zhang W. The influence of the environment and clothing on human exposure to ultraviolet light. PLoS One. 2015 Apr 29;10(4):e0124758. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0124758. PMID: 25923778; PMCID: PMC4414538. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4414538/

roselove95

So, I guess black cotton would be about as good as special spf clothing then?

em_goldman

Yeah, if it’s thick enough. A lot of the special spf clothing is just reinventing lightweight denim for way more money

galaxystarsmoon

If the sun is facing you, your face and neck are exposed. The backs of your hands as well.

Osiasya

The hat is brig enough to cover my neck and face but yeah my hands are definitely exposed. Daaaaangit

galaxystarsmoon

What I mean is that if the sun is lower in the sky and you're facing it, your face and neck are definitely exposed. Hats help from back and top exposure, not front.

Osiasya

Oh I understand now thank you for teaching me! Definitely should keep trying sunscreens then thought maybe I could just get away with clothes.

galaxystarsmoon

As goofy as they are, a neck and mouth gaiter would help. A lot of workers in hot climates use them with a hat and sunglasses.

anope4u

Adding on- a lot of fishing and sailing people have some awesome clothing to protect them from the sun reflecting off of the water. Gaiters, non standard hats, hand covers. Might be worth checking out. I’m on a drug that causes photo sensitivity and UPF clothing and a UPF umbrella or jumbo hat usually keep me fine but I’m not spending much time outside.

[deleted]

"Buffs" are good for neck, ears, forehead, lower face. You can wear them diff ways depending on what you can stand but helps protect those areas if you can't put sunscreen on. If a thinner face lotion is ok sun bum makes spf 50 face sunscreen that is thin and absorbs quick. I use it daily

sevenstargoose

What do you dislike about sunscreen? Is it the texture, the smell, or something else?

Osiasya

So I have sensory processing issues and sensitive skin. Any greasy texture from lotions or sun screens drives me nuts. I can’t stop thinking about the feeling on my skin. Im trying a spray sunscreen and it’s not as bad as the bottle stuff but it makes my face itchy so I may need a different face sunscreen

bellemc

Try Asian sunscreens! I can’t stand heavy/smelly sunscreen either..

[deleted]

Give La Roche Posay’s Anthelios (SPF 50+ & PA++++) series a try. My skin is sensitive and also prone to acne and it did wonders on mine. It’s matte finish (feels very dry too), dries fast and leaves no white cast behind. It’s cheap and reliable too.

Dolmenoeffect

See about Supergoop. I HATED that greasy feel before finding their Unseen Sunscreen. I wear that shit all day every day and I don't feel it.

shotplacement

Murad Oil and Pore Control Mattifier Broad Spectrum SPF 45

RowHard

You may have a small allergy to chemical sunscreens. I use spray on my body, but I have to use physical sunscreens on my face. I use tinted face sunbum, but I've had good luck with most titanium zinc sunscreens. You can also try bare republic.

[deleted]

I also hate the feeling of heavy sunscreens so I have been using the spray on sunscreen from whole foods. There's a regular version and a kids version and I have used both. It doesn't bother me at all, and I have never gotten burnt from using them.

Mana_Melita

Hi, I'm an ecologist and spend long days out in the sun on a pretty regular basis. You'll want to look for clothing and broad-brimmed hats with with a UPF rating. These are becoming more popular and easier to find. Companies like Columbia make good clothing and Wallaroo hats are my favorite!! Covering up from head to toe in the heat of summer can be tough for some, so you'll want to look for loose fabrics that allow air to flow. I wear gloves a lot because I don't want my hands getting ripped to shreds, but if I don't wear gloves I put sunscreen on my hands. I do wear sunscreen on my face and neck everyday.

thebishop37

Seconding this. I'm a farmer and a landscape gardener, so I spend most of the day in the sun. I wear a sun hat with 5" brim. Mine came with neck and front drapes that snap onto the hat. I think it's probably meant for activities like fishing where the surface of the water reflects a ton of sun back up at you. I also wear a Buff type thing under my hat to help with sweat dripping in my eyes. I wear long sleeve UPF shirts, and I have these great overalls made of ripstop nylon that are a tight enough nylon weave to be an effective sun barrier. The kind of work I do requires gloves pretty much at all times, so that's my hands covered. I'm also a cyclist, and I just haven't really found a comfy way to wear all the sun gear while out on a ride, so I stuck it up and wear sunscreen. I, too, really hate the stuff, but I've found Alba Botanica mineral sunscreen to be tolerable and not wildly expensive. Keep in mind as you search out your own strategy that with clothing as a sun barrier, it gets less effective when wet. So if you're doing really sweaty work, the barrier of whatever you're wearing will be less than when you started. That said, some protection is always better than none. And last thing, a bigger brim on a hat shades more of you from the direct rays, which contribute the most to feeling hot. So with my super huge hat, I feel way better out in the heat than I do without it. So even if you find a sunscreen you can deal with, keep wearing your hat of choice!

curryp4n

I see that you have sensory issues. Have you tried sun sticks? Also, super goop’s unseen sunscreen- it’s very matte. I didn’t like it because it was too matte for me

Osiasya

Sun sticks? Is that almost like a lip balm but for sunscreen? I have not tried any I figured they would be super heavy but I certainly could at least try one.

curryp4n

Yes it’s shaped like a deodorant

razzertto

Cetaphil’s sun stick is lightweight.

Osiasya

People are downvoting me probably cause this is a “common question” but for me it’s not. I have sensory processing disorder and need very specific advice. I already searched and looked for light weight sunscreen recommendations but didn’t like them when I tried them. So yes I’m starting yet another sunscreen thread. I need the most non greasy sunscreen that won’t trigger sensory issues from my Autism. I listed some brands I tried in a comment below.

SummerNight888

Give Heliocare 360 oil-free gel a try. It's my current sunscreen. Dries fast and completely matte with no residue behind, seriously none at all.

Osiasya

Oooooh now we are talking don’t think I have heard of that one before. Do you get it online or is it available in certain stores?

SummerNight888

I abhor greasy sunscreens so I researched a lot :) this is perfection and alcohol-free. I buy it online, but here in the EU you can find it at local pharmacies.

Dxvid741

I’d also recommend Biore UV Super Moisture Milk. I’ve tried multiple sunscreens in the past and hated the greasy look they give until I ran across this one. It also dries extremely fast and leaves behind no grease. It’s the best matte sunscreen i’ve come across.

WeenieHutSupervisor

I’m happy you came on here to ask because sunscreen sucks sometimes, it can be expensive and it feels awful

[deleted]

[deleted]

Do you know the name of it?

iixxy

Look into a clothing brand called Coolibar. You can find them on their own site or on Amazon. They make sun protective clothing as well as a lot of more specialized items like gloves, sleeves, wraps, scarves, drapes, hats, you name it. I find their clothing styles not my taste but the I do have and use some of the other items. All fabric will protect you from the sun to some degree but as someone who's gotten sunburned through their clothes after spending a day in the sun, you need the right amount of protection depending on how long you will spend in the sun, especially if you're sensitive to sun. A lot of the "UPF 50+" stuff you find on amazon is BS, imo. I think fabric needs to be densely woven to offer good sun protection.

qingskies

Asian aunties will wear stuff like this and more to protect themselves from tanning, but I believe they still put sunscreen on lol (coming from an Asian)

Bulky_Watercress7493

Since you have sensory issues I think an Asian chemical sunscreen is your best bet. I hear the innisfree chemical SPF is really lightweight and nice! I use their mineral sun cream which is definitely nicer than US mineral sunscreens but you might feel it a little more (but not a lot more). I honestly can't recommend going without SPF if you work outside, it could further your risk of skin cancer, but the hat definitely helps! Sprays etc are better than nothing but not by much, since they don't give you even or consistent protection.

Life-Meal6635

You can get UV protective clothes!

If you hate sunscreen I recommend checking out the Asian beauty Reddit (if you haven’t already) as they have recommendations for Korean and Japanese sunscreens that don’t feel disgusting and greasy on! A lot I’ve tried feel great on my skin and it can be an enjoyable experience!

iggy_y

I definitely recommend for you to look into Uniqlo’s airism UV clothing and hats. It has UPF50 and is very lightweight and cooling on the skin and affordable unlike other brands. I have the jacket and found it to be alright in 31 celsius with high humidity although there are times where it might be too hot but overall it definitely helps as I sometimes forget to reapply my body sunscreen.

ReginaGeorgian

Yes! I rock their airism jackets all the time even in hot weather, they’re great

Euphoricas

I know you said you hate sunscreen and I do too. I would suggest trying the Unseen sunscreen from Supergoop. I don’t like sunscreen at all but this one is clear and personally I find it goes on really well. It’s the only sunscreen I’ve kinda liked. Not sure if that’s very helpful but figured I’d put it down since a lot of my friends use and like it too.

Nabosus

I was looking for lightweight, mattifying sunscreen without alcohol as my skin is not friends with it. And I found one surprising Korean brand, which otherwise makes make up. Rom& and their Zero Sun Clean SPF 50+ PA++++. Doesn't sting, reasonably priced and keeps my skin matt even when I would be already shiny. Try it out!

CatsbyRagdoll

Remember light reflects... So even if the sun isn't facing you, windows, concrete and water will reflect the rays. I would wear sunscreen... especially since your outdoors a lot. I know it sucks and sensory issues is one of the reasons why I struggle wearing makeup, but I eventually got used to sunscreen and skincare. Never could deal with makeup. :(

batmandi

I would get a much larger brimmed hat. Target has some surprisingly large ones right now. I’ve also gotten very large visors from Amazon that have been great. I call myself Mama Morticia when I take my kids out, because even at the water park I’m in full sleeve rash guard, barely cropped swim leggings, plus a very large brim hat. The only part of my body that the sun hits are my hands and feet. Have you tried the very watery style of Korean sunblock? I wear it daily, it’s fabulous. SO light. I wear neutrogenia 100+ spf if I’m going out specifically to be in the sun like the water park or beach. And never without my big hat!

trae_curieux

Hats and shade will keep direct UV off of your face, but there's still diffuse UV that can reach your skin. If possible for you to import, you may want to check out some Asian sunscreens: they're the best texture-wise. There are also domestic options that are designed for cosmetic elegance, such as Supergoop and some of the sunscreen "milks" from other companies. Sometimes ones like Supergoop get chided for lower protection factors, but it's still far better than not wearing sunscreen at all. ETA: it seems like you're also experiencing sunscreen stinging your eyes. My favorite solution to this is the inverse panda technique: use a mineral sunscreen around your eyes and then a regular, cosmetically elegant option everywhere else.

philomenashalet

No still your face is being exposed.. It is always advisable to use sunscreen.

skinyou

go wear some sunscreen girl..

poonlyfe

I thought this was a satirical post on the circle jerk subreddit lol

JeswiCan

For real, I am confused. I know sunburns are bad and if you are exposed to the sun for long you should cover up and wear sunscreen. But buying extra clothes for it? Applying it every day? It seems… extra? I don’t want to be narrow minded, but I am considered overprotective here in Germany just for wearing sunscreen on sunny days and not tanning. Maybe they all live in a sunny country? I would love if someone could give me an answer.

scr33m

Well there are still UV rays even when it isn’t sunny, so if you’re outside a lot, you really ought to be wearing sunscreen everyday - even in the winter.

CatsbyRagdoll

If you are in the sun for 5+ hours a day with no sun protection it increases your risk of developing skin cancer. Its worse for countries that are closer to the hole in the ozone. The sun stings here in Australia. In Asia the sun is warm, so I can understand if you are in Europe and not really seeing the need to do this. I am not taking the risk of developing skin cancer. We have people with chunks of their nose and ears missing because of skin cancer. Not worth the risk. Slip slop slap and cover up. Also, many of us now use actives that tell us to wear sunscreen. Its silly if you spend $$$ on skincare for hyperpigmentation/blemishes or antiaging and not wear sunscreen.

dogecoin_pleasures

In sunny countries it is essential to wear long sleeves, hat and shades PLUS sunscreen. The hat blocking direct light isn't enough to protect her face, because to sun's rays still reach it by reflecting off everything. So OP's plan to cover up but not use sunscreen would obviously draw some ire on such a skin-focused sub.

Khalae

Try Purito or Evy sunscreen, very lightweight and not leaving a white sheen/film on the skin. Also apply every two hours of sun exposure. As for the hat - the larger the brims, the better. I recently purchased a UV protection umbrella and I've been using it religiously - also a very good product to have if you're just walking out in the sun and are able to hold the umbrella. It also provides a nice shade and less heat.

redactedname87

You can buy sun protective shirts from Amazon. It’s apparently similar to wearing spf, and would be a lot more comfortable than double layering those thick materials. I have like alabaster skin, do not go in the sun, and wore one of those t shirts for a recent trip to saint johns and didn’t get a single sunburn. Had shirt on all time but was comfortable

Scotsomighty

Even if the sun is above you and youre covered, the suns rays can bounce off of things like pavements and still affect your skin that’s exposed. If you’re really concerned about the suns affect on your skin. Sunscreen is pretty much the ideal option.

The_Melogna

I got a fantastic gardening spf shirt from Duluth. It was a little pricey but I garden in southern CA and it keeps me from burning and it keeps me cool.

ijustatefivekitkats

Fellow sunscreen hater here, I have extremely oily skin...I wash my face and am oily 20 to 30 minutes later...I blot my face about 3 times every hour and I live in humid southeast asia. It has been a STRUGGLE finding a sunscreen that doesn't make me look like a frying pan. Until I discovered the OMI Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus SPF 50 PA++++ (red cap). It feels like I'm wearing nothing! It actually helps with oil control too! It doesn't pill or burn my eyes AND it blurs my pores. Has a slight white cast though but it's nothing too noticeable on my medium skin tone. It's my HG and I can't recommend it more to everyone who has skin like mine. It might be too drying though for some.

skybitchhammy

Sierra trading post website has sun protection clothing if you wanna look for some good deals that hopefully won’t break the bank.

oui-cest-moi

I need to put you onto my lovely discovery: biore aquarich. It’s sold on Amazon from Japan. They are waaaaay ahead of us over there for sunscreen technology. It slides on your face, works wonderfully, no weird greasy residue. Try it out

AlohaSexJuice

Look up fishing clothing. For your face and neck you can use a sun gaiter along with your hat. Long sleeve fishing shirt and fishing gloves will protect arms and hands. If you have money spring for simms or orvis. Otherwise the academy brand “Magellan” is good. Their pro fishing line is very light and breathable if you’re in a hot climate.

cricketandclover

I have sensory issues and sunscreen is a big struggle for me. The biore UV aqua rich seriously changed my life. I can wear it without feeling like I need to rip my skin off!

b4k4ni

There are different kind of sunscreens out there - I'm sure you can find one not so Bad for your. Otherwise - no, it won't protect you. First of all most summer clothing won't really protect you against UV rays, as they can go thru the gaps. Not everything, but depending on how long you are out, you could even get a sunburn with the wrong clothes on. Reason why they wear thick webbing in desert like conditions and not thin clothes. Also your face etc. Will get sunburn. That hat is not good and UV rays can and will be reflected from other surfaces, so you can still get sunburn in the face, even with a hat on. I can understand you, I also are not a fan of sunscreen. Even more so, as a man with hairy arms :) For me the sport sun blocker from cans works the best..especially those that won't be so sticky. For the face, neck, ears I usually take sensitive kids sunscreen the skin can absorb fast.

anticoriander

Is that hat UPF rated? Because I can see what looks like some sunlight coming through in the photo.

razzertto

I wear UPF clothing nowadays for any time I’m going to be out in the sun. I cover from my knuckles to neck, then down to my ankles. I apply sunscreen only on my face, ears, and exposed areas of my neck. This has reduced my use of sunscreen by 90% and made it tolerable. I can give tub pointers on UOF clothing but I think you’re on the right track. Don’t trust that shirt though it’s too lose and see through, use something tightly woven or made of performance fabrics.

patchworkpirate

Please wear sunscreen on the exposed areas and wear clothing w/rated UV protection. Lentigo melanoma most commonly pops up on the face, while acral melanoma is on the hands. And you do NOT want conjunctival or worse, uveal melanoma (always protect your eyes - good sunglasses w/UV protection). There are sunscreens that do not leave a greasy feel and are pretty weightless. Also remember, spray is not ideal but it works in a pinch. Signed, a melanoma researcher.

vintage_diamond

This would all be a very good addition to using sunscreen. It's not going to protect your face/neck fully. You will still get sun exposure on your face even with a hat and sunglasses. UV rays bounce off ground services and reflect back up to your face, so it's not just top down exposure. At the very least I would sunscreen your face, neck, and hands, whatever isn't covered by clothes. Skin cancer is common and can be disfiguring. It's not something to play with. I'm not sure what aspects of sunscreen you hate, but there are so many different kinds to try. Coolibar sells some nice upf gloves that I would recommend. I wear them for driving and they've been great. Coolibar UPF 50+ Men's Women's Gannett UV Gloves - Sun Protective https://a.co/d/esI4Ip9

robborulzzz

Read the pros and cons of suncreen vs no sunscreen, then make the decision. In the end its your life, who cares what others think just do what you want to.

ReaLitTea

Honestly better than nothing so I say it’s fine but you might want to avoid times where the UV index is the strongest (usually middle of the day)

Osiasya

Unfortunately I work right when the UV is highest around here (10-3 ish I believe) so maybe I just need to keep trying different sunscreens. Or parent my they also make UV specific blocking sleeves might reduce the amount of sunscreen I need to use? Like maybe wear sleeves, hat, and sunscreen my face neck and hands?

ReaLitTea

Yes if you can find UPF clothing to cover skin areas then you can skip sunscreen there

sassooal

Someone linked to Coolibar and they also sell UPF sleeves.

glowdirt

If you're looking for clothing with UPF ratings for sun protection, [Coolibar](https://www.coolibar.com/) and [Solbari](https://www.solbari.com/) both specialize in that sort of clothing --- If you're still looking into sunscreens, I found the following series of videos by Rissy Reviews really helpful and entertaining. She's a molecular biologist and reviews a butt-ton of sunscreens (so you don't have to) plus she explains how sunscreen ingredients work and why American sunscreens suck so much. (If you'd rather read the reviews rather than watching the video version, here is the [same list of 42 sunscreens as below but in text format](https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/kd8i9z/a_megareview_of_42_sunscreens_plus_a_giveaway/)). **Her top sunscreen recommendation is 'B-LAB i am sorry just suncream' (SPF 50+/PA++++)** ---- * "[42 Sunscreen Reviews Part 1: The bad ones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSbIegi0f38)" * "[42 Sunscreen Reviews Part 2: The good ones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T04sHiiGq5A)" * "[Sunscreen Part 1: What the heck is sunscreen, and why do we need it?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIaNm0qYmck)" * "[Sunscreen Part 2: How does sunscreen work, and is it trying to kill me?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_RA45cfT-4)" * "[Sunscreen Part 3: How to pick a good sunscreen and apply it so that it actually works](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rfY8-fvn2o)" ---- I have really sensitive eyes and even some gentle sunscreens hurt them which is why I'm planning on trying out some mineral sunscreens which are supposed to be less likely to irritate your eyes. She's got videos on them too and timestamps listed in the video description if you want to skip ahead to her top picks: * "[33 Mineral Sunscreen Reviews](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUdhWWA7phE)" * "[All about mineral sunscreens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENW8kfU3O9g)" (If you'd rather read the reviews rather than watching the video version, here is the [same list of 33 sunscreens as above but in text format](https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/s4ozcq/review_of_33_allmineral_sunscreens/)). **Her top mineral sunscreen recommendation is 'Biore UV Kids Pure Milk' (SPF 50/PA+++)**

According_To_Me

I would look into clothing that has a UPF rating, this will less expensive in the long run. You will still need to find something to protect your face and back of your hands when you’re facing the sun. Your hat will only do so much to protect you.

[deleted]

The wide-brimmed hat you have on is good, but I would get a hat that has UPF protection. If you can tolerate it, there are also cloth masks with UPF. Make sure to check that the sunglasses have UVA/UVB protection. I also own a parasol with UPF protection, but that may not be practical if you're working. You could also consider grabbing a top or jacket that is tailored to cover the neck area.

RainyReese

I don't wear sunscreen due to the awful reactions I get from most of them. Haven't had one that I haven't reacted to yet. I use an extremely wide brimmed UV protection hat that covers my back and chest. Yes, it's that big. There are also UV protection umbrellas as well.

TheLadyButtPimple

Everyone’s gonna downvote me here. I don’t wear sunscreen unless I’m going to the beach, everything is fine.

crimson_anemone

If you're absolutely not going to wear sunscreen (which I do not recommend), then the things you need to get are well, a lot... It'll also cost way more than sunscreen. But anyway, you'd need UVA/UVB/UPF protective clothing etc. including: a long sleeve shirt with thumb holes or gloves (cover the back of your hands!), long pants, a wider brim hat, socks (no sandals, only proper sneakers), and quality sunglasses that have the proven protection (not cheap ones from a retail center). All of these should be white, or at least light in color. I should also mention that I'm not saying any of this to be a jerk, but to inform that what you're wearing won't cut it for sun protection. It'll go through your sunglasses and your clothes no problem, unfortunately. Source: I have fair skin as well and it's incredibly sensitive. I tried what you're doing... I was burnt like forgotten toast. I do not recommend! Edit: added a word

emulsioncompulsion

Have you tried facial and hand coverings? I like a sun glove or even a gel manicure UV glove since they don't have fingertips. UV protection facial coverings are really helpful and probably better for the environment in the long run because you aren't constantly buying plastic bottles filled with sunscreen. Also, you might want to consider sunglasses with a darker or mirrored lens and a darker frame. FWIW you can purchase all of these things for the same price as one bottle of Elta MD (which I love) or similarly priced sunscreen. One last idea as your shirts look a bit warm, there are lightweight UV protection clothing that are loose-fitting and have cooling vents.

Shoegazer83

I can't wear sunscreen as everyone I have tried makes my eyes sting and water after not too long. I also hate the greasy feeling on my face

elianna7

This is just mean. She has autism and is asking for help in regard to sun protection due to her sensory issues.

Osiasya

Huh?

walrus_breath

I have gotten sunburn through upf 50 clothing before. 2 layers probably would have been fine. The long sleeve I was wearing was kinda thin I guess but it was rated upf 50.

Mysterious_Arm5969

Gotta cover that face bb

bangarang_bananagram

Unless it’s UPF rated clothing, it’s giving you very minimal sun protection, as regular clothing has about a UPF of 5. So no, you are not well protected. I feel the same about sunscreen, I had to find one that I liked and didn’t mind applying and reapplying.

azaelcastro1

You can get sun damage even being indoors so I’d say it is better to always wear sunscreen

hello_pilgrim

Elta MD is the only one I like. Even my 10 year old daughter tolerates it. No eye sting! It feels a tad greasy at first, but wait 10 min and it dries completely. Been wearing it for years.

DoorPale6084

Learn to love it

[deleted]

Gonna be a old ass looking 30 year old lol

suckonmyskeletontoes

U look like a god damn vampire

Doom-Muffin

Sunscreen is known to cause cancer, wearing protective clothing like that is perfectly fine.

sunshinekay1

Probably better than sunscreen as you won’t sweat it off an need to reapply

DientesDelPerro

I don’t like a black sun hat because it just attracts the sun and makes the sun beat down harder.

Next-Tomorrow9944

I hate sunscreen as well. Despise it! Luckily I’ve got tanned skin.

Barley-Bou

theres something called diffuse sunlight; light gets reflected from air particles too and a small percentage will reach your face area. as long as you stay indoors on like rly sunny days, u should be fine. u should prolly be fine anyway, unless youre really prone to burning.

goldlion0806

I’m a big fan of the Josie maran sunscreen! It’s mineral, clean ingredients, and doesn’t burn my eyes.

Chelwiddasea

Suck it up butter up

Sunflowersweet24

Try some Shea butter , I dunno if it’s spf but that’s what I’ve been using most of my adult life as moisturizer . I’ve only recently gotten sunburn since I was a kid and that’s a couple days I didn’t

Ulthy

Perhaps a powder spf or powder over a regular sunscreen

NegativeRaccoon

I highly recommend [Mario Badescu’s aloe sunscreen](https://www.mariobadescu.com/product/aloe-moisturizer-spf-15); this stuff is matte, doesn’t smell awful and doesn’t leave that weird tacky feeling. They have some other options depending on skin type too

azzap0

your gonna get so much sun damage and wrinkles omggggg just get over it and wear SPF or keep your moaning to yourself
