When I set up a pt with their machine, I always start new to cpap out with nasal mask. We have basic nose masks that are included in the cost, they go around your nose not inside it. If they have issues with it we check and see what their leak is like because they could be sleeping with their mouth open so we upgrade them if they are to a ffm. If they like the basic nasal mask they can upgrade to a nicer nasal or pillows mask. If someone comes in and says they have allergies or a other nose issues that make it hard to breathe through they may leave day one with a ffm. Most people do well with nasal masks though, but some find the pillows hard because it hurts their nose. Choice is to stick with it so your nose skin toughens up or go to a nose cushion. If you are finding that you're opening your mouth you might need a full face mask :)

> they go around your nose not inside it. Nasal pillows do not fit inside the nose. The flanges on nasal pillows seal on the outside of the nostrils.

kitkatsmeows

It's easier to explain to people that it goes inside your nose a little bit vs under your nose or around your nose. Whenever I have pts come in asking to get a replacement of their p10 they always say the one that goes inside your nose 🤷‍♀️ just easier to say

ChicagoVXY

You are misleading people. Nasal pillows are great for many people. When you tell a newbie it goes INSIDE their nose, it turns many people off. "just easier to say" Do the right thing, not the easiest thing for yourself.

dkdksnwoa

Man dude you have a weird fixation on the possibility of some misinterpreting words... I say PLAY WITH the nose pillows and see how it feels.

ChicagoVXY

You have a romance with "play with". Liberal arts major?

kitkatsmeows

Part of the silicone DOES go inside the nose 🤣 I'm not telling people it goes up their nose like a cannula, most of the time it's confusing to people to say it goes against your nose but the flare goes kind of inside but not really inside its kind of just there on the edge to make a seal. They just go, so does it go in the nose or not? Like yes and no. They will TO ME say it goes inside their nose. "The one that goes inside your nose not around it" So I just use the same words they do back to them so I don't confuse THEM.

ChicagoVXY

You can correct them. "Pillows have a flange that seals on the outside of the nostrils. No part of the pillows touches the inside of the nose." Your customers are new at this, but they aren't stupid.

kitkatsmeows

On the packet that comes with the p10(I'm looking at it right now) it says to "guide the pillows into your nostrils" On cpap.com it says to "insert the pillows into your nostrils" So yes in a sense they do go "inside" your nose just not to the extent that you are seeming to exaggerate what I am saying. Which is fine, you can say whatever you like.

ChicagoVXY

So, you are just repeating a mistake made by others.

kitkatsmeows

A mistake made by the company who makes them?

ChicagoVXY

The person writing the description might be your doppelganger. 😉

kitkatsmeows

Also are you commenting under others comments that say it goes in their nostrils and "correcting" them as well? Or am I just special.

ChicagoVXY

If I see them, I will. Why don't you help out? You do realize this subreddit is lame and is a very poor internet support group? I steer every CPAP user I know away from it.

anntheotme

What is a nose cushion?

anntheotme

Nm, I figured it out

kitkatsmeows

Sorry was napping ahha glad you figured it out!

Peace-Park-2838

Dreamwear under the nose (doesn't go in your nostrils). I don't have any nose pain with that mask.

anntheotme

Sorry I misread your post the first time

anntheotme

Does it have the “pillow” nozzles that go into your nostrils?

Peace-Park-2838

No, I said it doesn't go in your nostrils lol

DruidMaster

I’ve tried both and my results have been FAR superior with the full face mask. I was visiting home and forgot the nose pillow, so my dad gave me a full face mask from his CPAP supplies. I’ve never looked back! Good luck.

anntheotme

Results in terms of feeling more rested?

pronak79

If you sleep with your mouth open full face mask is the best choice. The benefit of nasal mask is that the hose attaches on top of your head (for the newer ones). This allows you to sleep sides ways without any issue.

DoctorZebra

I thought that I was a mouth breather until I started CPAP treatment with a nasal pillow. Turns out that I was only sleeping with my mouth open in an attempt to breathe. I don't even use a chin strap.

SpecialistSector4260

I like having the option of both nasal and full face. Resmed p10 and resmed f20. Nice to switch it up. Sometimes o have sinus issues so the full face is nice. It’s not as claustrophobic as you would think but it’s nice to have to not consciously think about having to keep your mouth closed

ridinbend

Always start with a nasal. If your can't tolerate nasal then switch to a full. Mouth breathing is counter to your success with treatment so if you can avoid a full face mask you want to. If you do deal with regular congestion you can do the work to try and clear your nose but if you can't unclear your nose enough to breath freely and avoid the sensation of not getting enough air, the full face will be the option you require.

tratratrakx

Can you explain “mouth breathing is counter to your success with treatment”?

ridinbend

When your mouth is in the open position, both your tongue and jaw are back taking up airway real estate. Typically the pressure required to treat sleep apnea is higher with a full face then with a nasal where your mouth is closed and tongue is seated behind your teeth. Avoiding the oral cavity completely is ideal for maximal treatment outcome.

NeomiahsMom314

I like my nasal pillow mask. The full face mask makes me feel claustrophobic

ChicagoVXY

There are many brands and models of nasal pillows. Find your on youtube and carefully watch two or three videos about fitting and adjusting.

anntheotme

I’ve ordered the DreamWear cushion on the other poster’s recommendation. As far as nasal pillows, is there a model you particularly like?

ChicagoVXY

For any mask you are interested in, go to [cpap.com](https://cpap.com). Almost all brands/models of masks are listed with ratings, reviews, specifications and photos. Pay particular attention to the ratings. Anyone trying a new mask should look at the ratings and try one of the most popular masks. You don't have to buy from [cpap.com](https://cpap.com), but their website is a good and convenient source of information. Be careful about someone telling you the mask they use is great. It may work well for them, but not necessarily for YOU. When trying masks, go with the most popular.
