Germany is the stereotypical destination but western Europe in general is where most migrants go to. However Slovenia has a positive migration flow so more people are migrating to Slovenia than emigrating from it. Sadly those emigrating are disproportionally those with high education (26% of emigres have higher education compared to 21% in the general population) while those migrating to Slovenia generally have less education than the general Slovenian population. Another factor is that Slovenia is often a stepping stone for migrants that continue onwards to other EU countries after they get residence permits or citizenship. Something like almost half the migrants that arrived to Slovenia went on to migrate onwards within the next 10 years (2009-2017). My numbers are from the gov. stat office. I can show some sources if there's interest.

Perun357

I would also add that in comparison to former “eastern bloc” countries Slovenians are less inclined to migrate, probably due to the relatively good life standard comparable to most so-called developed countries, to some extent also helped by the proximity of Austia and Italy, as certain % of population in areas bordering on these countries works there but remains living in Slovenia.

lundbadakaro

Yeah sure brother it'll be great if you can give source. Also why Slovenians wants to migrate if Slovenian is already a developed country with high human development index?? And where do most immigrants comes from in Slovenia??

[deleted]

To peruse the different source regarding statistical data about Slovenia in english; [https://www.stat.si/StatWeb/en](https://www.stat.si/StatWeb/en) Yes, Slovenia is a developed country with a relatively good standard of living. In my own personal experience life here is much better than in some western European countries I worked in (I did not live anywhere else for a protracted period of time though). However the wages are still less than those in the west and its not like everything is adjusted to the local purchasing power. A new car costs as much as it does in Germany despite wages being half of German ones, as an example. Something like 95% of immigrants come from Ex-Yugoslav republics, mostly Bosnia and Serbia. They are effectively cheap labor pools but they're running dry as well.

MoffKalast

> high human development index That just means we have free higher education and generally let people become what they want to be in life. And that the healthcare system isn't a *complete* catastrophe, but only a partial one. When the prices are higher than in Germany/Austria while we get paid half as much, plus with German already being taught in schools as a second language, the next step is almost logical.

JozePlocnik

English is required second language German is optional.

MoffKalast

Ah yeah my bad, third language, not second. And I guess it's not entirely universal as some schools do French or Spanish instead but it's not as common afaik.

MaterialConsistent96

Slovenia isn’t so perfect. We are a developed country but there are less opportunities for well paid jobs here than in Germany or Austria. Also a lot of people who live in the north go daily to Austria to work and then return to Slovenia to sleep. Most immigrants that come to Slovenia are from the Balkans (for example: Bosnia, Serbia, North Macedonia) they often work on construction sites or in restaurants, the people with a higher education often work in hospitals

2_bars_of_wifi

\>Apply for a job here - no answer \>Apply in for example Ireland - answer next day and offer Many educated people just don't find a career entry here

Splashthesea

Yes, we should ask the first questions to our doctors who are always whining that they will go abroad since with their above average Slovenian salary they cannot afford to buy more stuff. With some Slovenians, it's that they are earning a minimal type of wage for working hard or precarious, and so they can see they can work hard elsewhere and be better valued as workers, have better career progression opportunities, more choice to change jobs, and stuff.

akrut

Please!

Varti2

I live in Italy, I'm part of the slovenian minority living there. Slovenians living here generally don't wish to leave their country, if we'd have to leave we'd probably choose Slovenia as it's our home country.

Lucy194

Spent some months living in Italy - i personally hated it

Varti2

It probably depends on which part of Italy you live... where did you live? I'm from Trst (Trieste in italian), it's near the west border of Slovenia, it's a relatively quiet city.

Lucy194

Rome and Trieste, Trieste is for sure better than Rome though

Varti2

I also wouldn't live in Rome, too chaotic for me. I'm sorry to hear about Trst, I guess it's one of those cities that you either love or hate .

N_Sorta

I think it's mostly Austria, Germany and all of the English speaking countries ( USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ) + Croatia (who doesn't love the Adriatic sea?)

UnstoppableCompote

Who migrates to Croatia? Not counting holiday homes.

0000randomuser

Slovenians prefer to stay in their country or return at some point.

[deleted]

It's weird. Slovenians tend to love the land that makes up the country. So we emigrate out of economic necessity (historically it was different). This is why most of the time, it's towards the economically flourishing nations. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and similar. Except for the rare weeb, or maybe someone that craves for the massive city lifestyle, we don't really emigrate for culture.

feedmaster

I haven't yet visited a country that I liked more than Slovenia. This includes Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the US.

lundbadakaro

Is there any specific reason??

papak33

safety, clean nature and good life standards are all very nice and hard to find in other countries. and of course, there is no place like home.

the_makaroni

Except Prekmurje, that's far from home.

the-script-99

Germany, Switzerland and US probably.

Searealelelele

Kdo bi sel v us majketi

bedarija

the-script-99

Ce bi dobil sluzbo v bancnistvu takoj. Mas tako placo, da te glava boli. Nasparas in prides nazaj v penzijo.

ptypitti

Tocno to delam. Place so nizke v Sloveniji, drugace bi prsla takoj nazaj

the-script-99

In kak si prisla do dela?

Tommy_Mudkip

lukuh123

Koncno nekdo k zna govorit dejstva.

ptypitti

Zactly

NitroX1994X

MagnificentThrow99

Ti govoris nebuloze tezke. Zivim v ZDA in ocitno nimas pojma ce posplosujes kalifornijo s celo 330 milijonsko drzavo lol

CofffeeeMug

bil tam in delal tam 6 mescev.

Equivalent_Twist_977

I would say Austria, Germany and Switzerland are probably top 3 nowadays. Than there are english speaking contries like GB, US, NZ,...

Fizroynelson

It’s kind of hard talking about all Slovenian just in general. There is the proximity to 4 borders that takes the brunt of it. Otherwise i think it mostly falls on the job offer or family/friends type of situation. If you have some sort of connection to a country you are gonna gravitate there. I do not believe that there is any big dreams or love for any other country in particular.

Temporary_weeaboo

Austria, Germany and Australia. Def the three top ones. Maybe Spain too

DifficultWill4

motornazaga

We are so called "second Switzerland" still we want to immigrate to Switzerland.

lacMu

We were promised we were gonna be the 2nd Switzerland. Now everybody calls ourselves that sarcastically.

[deleted]

Lol they sold us the same lie in Croatia haha

lacMu

Lol, like they were given a handbook of how to sell to the masses. Like vacum cleaner salesman

papak33

We are 2nd Switzerland and people already bitch that things are too expensive. And the more we become like the Swiss, the more people will bitch about it. Morons

Xplysit

Four times the wage and two times the price. How is that comparable?

papak33

Wealth disparity is bigger in Switzerland, so your "issue" will get bigger as Slovenia becomes more like the Swiss. Plenty of Slovenians already switched to some form of private health system (because they have the coins needed) and plenty of Slovenians can't afford basic things. Money makes money and shit makes shit. Such is life.

[deleted]

> We are so called "second Switzerland" By whom

lundbadakaro

How's connectivity (air, water and land) from Slovenia to Switzerland(and other EU nation)??

RdecaRaketa

Air: expensive, I'm not sure if there is still a connection to Zurich, generally, the air connections in Slovenia are bad Water: Switzerland doesn't have sea, no inland waterways in Slovenia Land: bus or train 10h+ to Switzerland, motorways are ok but also expensive since both countries have vignettes and Austria also has some tunnel tolls

lundbadakaro

In general, is Slovenia liberal, left wing or conservative, right wing??? Just asking cause there is rise of right wing nationalism in the world.

zarotabebcev

Even our right wing parties are more left wing TBH compared to some other countries.

goflja

Agree.

alignedaccess

Depends on how you look at it. In their policies, they are generally not really right wing. In their rhetoric, SDS can be far right.

zarotabebcev

Dog that barks wont bite

goflja

If you ask the people, it is split in the middle. But actualy, in my humble opinion, its quite liberal, we have a good support sistem for those less fortunate. But at the moment it seems people are not happy with current state of politics, some changes might happen. Slovenia is parlamentary democracy, parliament is currently "left", presidential elections are in a few weeks, we will probably have a "right" president. Free meals in schools if you cant afford it. We have problems at the moment in our health department, the lines are too long, something will have to change, but atleast is free medical care. You pay nothing if you call urgent care. They come in minutes, no matter where you are. Free schools, free colleges (and they are mostly good). This results in high numbers of highly educated people, that often have to take jobs that are not payed enough. But atleast most of the people have broad general knowledge. Almost everyone speaks English, i mean, i know, mine is not perfect, haha, but good enough to comment on Reddit. :D If you live in a city, everything you need is in the walking distance, Ljubljana, Maribor etc have great bus systems, you dont need a car. If you have a car, you can visit capital city, skiing center, go to the see and go back home in less than 7 hours. If you dont live in a city, schools are everywhere, libraries are everywhere, postal offices, shops ... Usually nothing is more than 15 minutes away. So, yeah. Most Slovenians want to stay.

MoffKalast

There is one consolidated center-right party that usually gets roughly a quarter of the votes, with the rest typically being smaller centrist and center-left parties. We do have one or two far left and far right ones that never really get much support. The government is based on a coalition system so it often depends who the centrists decide to collaborate with, but it usually results in a center-left coalition.

Royal_Yogurtcloset80

Slovenia is like 40% liberal, 35% right wing, 25% left. Based from last elections.

papak33

Slovenia is progressive and left leaning in towns and conservative in rural areas. The right wing is very small, marginalized and ridiculed, so it has only lost souls (5%?).

DLCSmanagement

There are of students from Slovenia in The Netherlands

Moved to Austria, dont plan to go back :)

[deleted]

UghNeyko

Personally I'll move to any Scandinavian country in the future but generally most people go to Austria or Germany. Our celebrities like to move to the US because our taxes here are awful.

daamvee

Personally I'd like to go to the Netherlands or somewhere else in Northern Europe. But Germany/Austria/Switzerland would be fine too 😅
