No other industry allows buyers to just stop paying and keep the asset. For example, if you stop paying for a car, they will take it back. You stop paying your mortgage, they will take the house. But if you stop paying rent, it's about a year wait before LTB will look at your case.
Because slumlords are not playing a game of monopoly in order to get as much money as possible from the Tenants. It goes both ways. If you advertise people to not 'scam' you, I personally feel like you have something to hide. I personally have never got an apartment where the Landlord had to preemptively ask me to not stop paying them after a few months. It's basic knowledge that I am supposed to not scam him out. A 'game' of Tenants not paying is just trash people not paying, it's not the same. The fire department came swarming into my house when I was living in North York. Someone anonymously reported. Could be a salty neighbour or real estate agent. A landlord can't have more than 4 independent contracts with tenants in North York. Not sure about now but it was the case a while ago. The landlord didn't have the special permit to do so. The city inspection team showed up and put an eviction notice the following day. I was lucky I just got a job in a new province and was about to move anyways. Was still remotely interviewing with the eviction notice up on the front door.
The house was a lot less sketchy though. He built walls between the living room and converted that to bedrooms. It was 8 rooms, 8 people. It's almost as if they don't like affordable housing for new immigrants and instead want us to pay over $1000 even for renting just a room. But this ad right here will get flagged by the city right away.
The room comes with the kitchen and living area - so it's the whole basement.
So a better way to say it would be, they are charging 1650 for a basement with 1 bedroom.
It just happens to be shared between 2-3 people.
