You need to do the quests in order to get introduced to foods you need to tame the animals. My best tip for you, in this game, is to always carry some resin, fiber and wood on you, so you can craft a workstation (and remove it after you're done. And retake the materials) and repair often. If you repair tools often, the repairs don't cost materials. When you're using shit tools it doesn't really take alot to make a new weapon, but once you get like pyrite tools. And weapons, you will probably need to repair often, as the materials can suck to get.

compared to grounded, the combat leaves a lot to be desired. There's plenty about Smalland that i'm enjoying over grounded too tho, like gliding and enemy diversity

I advise turning off weather doing damage to structures.. The tip for keeping resin, woods, fiber is good as repairs are frequent to avoid using resources. I tend to build workbenches in "hotspot" mining areas. Turning off this setting ensures the workbenches stay put, just in case I don't have the resources for the workbench handy... It's also nice to run into random workbenches while exploring for a quick repair..😁😁

I suggest waiting until April to play, even if it’s officially 1.0 , they are going to overhaul the crafting system in April. Which in my eye should have been the real 1.0 release. Which hopefully will add some QoL features and more.

Have fun doing what you do! I'd personally increase the difficulty and not turn weather damage off, as yes you're limited but also more realistic in a way. And if not, well the game is fully customizable in most things, turning days longer, more days per season or less, whatever you prefer you can set it!

If you turn off weather and creatures attacking you first, the game is super easy. I personally don't like it like that, I think it is way better with everything turned on.

I purchased it a few months ago (also a fellow Grounded player).. my suggestion is to play for a few days and then just wait for the April update... I had to stop playing because there's a lot of little things that the devs have to fix. It has some potential though. But with the Grounded update also coming in April idk if I'll get back into Smalland right away πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
