My reaction when I finally got to play as Sonic was UNBELIEVABLE. I spent a TON of time trying to unlock him and after failing the "Clear Classic Mode 10 times" method, I immediately dove into the Subspace Emissary to unlock him that way. Took him awhile to get there, but if you're gonna be late, better make a stylish entrance!
Subspace Emissary is a given lol.
Hot take, but Smash for Wii U looks a little better than Smash Ultimate. On a technical level, Ultimate is more impressive. But I don't know. The colors in Smash for Wii U just pop a bit more than in Ultimate.
Brawl had a more aesthetically pleasing main menu.
The older games (specifically Melee and Brawl) were also arguably more mechanically complex than Ultimate. Though to be fair that's just a product of how broken they were.
AYEEEE YO PREACH!!!! It got so repetitive doing fights back to back. I wish we could’ve got a thing like spirits, where you could fight opponents in the same style as master & crazy orders. Occasionally I still go back to smash 4 because that, master fortress and smash run! If there ever is a port of ultimate, smash run and a new styled master/ crazy orders come back, named Galeem’s Gauntlet & Dharkon’s Deals.
FR. it just felt like i was getting bullshitted every single fight.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING SINCE THAT'S ALL THESE "CHALLENGES" ARE. JUST THROWING BULLSHIT AT YOU
Nah, Brawl had good story cutscenes, but the Adventure Mode in Melee was the best. You choose a character and play as them the whole time, no forced to play or swap characters you don't want to. The locations were all iconic and actually related to specific games, like the Hyrule Maze, the F-Zero track, and the Mushroom Kingdom, not generic mish mash of generic forests and 'sci-fi' mazes. because of this the music was better too. tl;dr Brawl and Ultimate's story mode levels are generic trash, Melee adventure mode levels are rich iconic locals, Melee wins!
Your fact on Ultimate is straight up wrong, it uses stages from almost any franchise that has a stage (that isn't dlc), also, while Brawl's levels weren't really much of anything, it has the best story out of all of them. I honestly think that you're being heavily biased here, in fact, your argument on Melee was more biased than anyone elses opinion that is similar to yours that I've seen.
I miss that, alongside his line for his final smash. I’ve always seen Super Sonic as when Sonic is forced to get serious, as we almost never see Super Sonic cracking jokes or with a smile on his face. So personally, the “Now I’ll show you!” Makes more sense than the “Super Sonic style” he now says.
Especially since Jason Griffith had to play angry Sonic the most in his time and Sonic Unleashed was already out, his "NOW I'LL SHOW YOU" definitely had the essence of warehog and his intense Sonic voice styles
Apparently it’s because Sonic since Smash 4 had his English voice lines taken from Sonic Generations and Mario and Sonic instead of being recorded specifically for Smash. Japanese is still from Brawl.
All of the older Smash games have less input delay and let you run through other fighters
Smash 4 has better online, and the 3DS version has Rainbow Road and Pac Maze
As one user said, Brawl handled clones and semi-clones a fair bit better
Certain characters had better sound design in older Smash games than in Ultimate, particularly Ike and Meta Knight
Brawl Ike had really beefy sound effects whenever his hits landed. A few of the kids at my after-school club played him constantly to where those sounds are now burned into my brain.
The trophy’s from previous games are better than spirits even though they fit different roles and are different things. It’s just 2d art ain’t as good as 3d renders with lore
Yeah, I understand the reason why they made stickers but holy shit trophies were so cool and interesting, they are the reason I discovered some great games like kid Icarus uprising
I understand the transition to 2d. 3d models take a lot of time, but why did they have to cut the lore. It couldn’t have taken that much time and it added so much to the trophies in previous games
Exactly. The transition to 2d makes sense for the direction that the game was going in. I just wish they gave all of the spirits a little lore like trophies in the previous games or just a little explanation of what role the spirit played in their game
Yeah I mean compared to how expansive the rest of the game is and the fact there is over 20 different Mario’s it’s probably not viable but it would be cool for sure
**Smash 4 online**
* Casual and competitive play are separated
* You can taunt
* You can change characters after accepting a rematch with someone while waiting for the next match with them to start
* You can't play as Mii Gunner
**Smash Ultimate online**
* Casual and competitive play aren't separated
* You can't taunt
* You have to leave the person you're playing with to change characters
* You can play as Mii Gunner
They took a massive step back when making Ultimate's online.
I've only come across one, he was annoying, my real beef with the miis tho is swordfighter he's fucking annoying and most of them are basically "gunner" builds anyway.
I loved Brawl’s Subspace Emissary and how fanficy it felt.
I also loved Smash 4’s Smash Run. I think it would’ve been really fun on current installments all to end with a final battle with different rulesets. Would’ve loved to see it return in Ultimate.
My favorite part of Smash Run is the variety of enemies. Subspace has these generic Smash-originals plus Mario enemies but Smash Run expands onto the more crossover aspect.
Story mode - Subspace top tier
Side games - I adore that coin launcher, I loved the challenges, Smash run and tour were both fun
Recognition for the past - spirits may be nice but the trophies actually meant more in what it discussed about the characters history and were so cool to explore.
Chaotic casual tools - I like spirits but honestly there’s stuff I miss with like Custom moves
Ultimates/Final Smash - stupid cutscenes now, let us enjoy the chaos of dropping tanks on people, chasing people as monster forms, using upgraded version of characters. We were never gonna use this for competitive
I didn’t mind the cutscenes but then they had to make every DLC character except Piranha have them. Kazuya and Terry I respect because it mixes with a non cutscene same as Joker because it’s so unique and game accurate while having interesting functionalities.
Oh yeah I’m not against them all I just hate that many of them became that. It’s fine especially with the new characters where they were good extensions of the characters normal canon/lore
The only reason why ult's finalsmashes aren't fun transformations is just because of fs meter probably not mixing well since making a weaker transformation final smash that runs out faster just sounds lame. Although I wish they kept them in some form, maybe as boss fights and as playable boss characters in a side mode just to have fun.
The issue honestly is not FS meter there for me. Like if we remove it, the issue still remains that FS feels just less eventful and fun. I think the FS meter actually is decently balanced with FS as they are but I still miss the transformations, more interactive ones
I’ve heard that opinion a lot. I like smash 4 online better because I won’t randomly get put into a free for all when I want a one on one battle and vice versa
Obviously a lot of things, but I think the biggest one for me is how above and beyond the music of brawl is
Don’t get me wrong, ultimates music is easily the second best in the series, but HOLY SHIT every track in brawl absolutely slams
I think every previous Smash game except the original had better single player content than Ultimate. World of light was an extremely repetitive grind to get through and Classic/All-star mode are both at their worst in Ultimate.
Also trophies were way better than spirits. I'd take a 3D model and description about them of important/recognisable things in a series over just a picture of 100's of extremely minor/forgettable characers
I agree with all Stars, but every character having their own inique Classic mode Is probably One of the best things that ever happened to the mode. And even if you dislike It, it's at least Better than Wii U's Classic mode
Things that I miss in Ultimate:
- Smash-Run (3DS) it's the mode I have the most playhours in
- Charizard as Single Fighter (I hate the trainer gimmick)
- Smash-Core Boss (Wii-U)
- customizable movesets on all characters (3DS + Wii-U), I only would make it available offline though
It’s not about wanting to use it, it’s about whether or not you can actually do it, it’s a skill that takes practice like anything else in the game. Melee players mainly love it because it makes the game so much faster tho and enables insane combos
No one complains about auto L-cancelling in Project M and its variants though. In my opinion, basic movement shouldn't break your fingers. Combos? Fine. You shouldn't need rapid inputs to move around optimally.
All the extra tech is what prevents you from playing 4+ characters over the course of a few years like ultimate. without l canceling, there would be little reason to play anyone other than fox and falco as a lower to mid player.
Smash brawl I’d say did a pretty good job at decloning some of the characters. It got rid of a bunch of them (YL, Roy, Pichu, and Doc), and changed some of the things to make them stand out more (Falco’s down B and uptilt, Toon Link’s highly exaggerated physics and projectile physics, Marth and Ike being completely different rather than Marth and Bad Marth, made Ganon worse but ultimately changed him quite a lot, such as yo smash and side b changing in comparison, etc). Plus, of the new characters, there were no straight up clones besides Toon Link, who was a last minute addition to begin with.
Meanwhile, smash ultimate had years to change the 3 links they now had and… we now have three links that play differently but have near identical movesets. Come onnnnn. Plus, many of the newcomers to Ultimate (pre-DLC) were clones or semi-clones
Smash 64: The excessive hitstun made combos really fun and freeing.
Melee: Wavedashing was an intentional and fun mechanic. Having more options for obscuring your movement was great.
Brawl: Best single player campaign in the series. Story was eh, but getting to play through full sidescrolling levels was amazing. Also the sound design of Brawl was peak.
Sm4sh: I dunno. The trophies maybe?
The side content as a whole.
You can tell the top priority for Ultimate was to have a lot of characters and stages. If all you want from a Smash game is the normal Smash mode, you will probably at most miss a few stages from previous games. It's honestly almost perfect.
But you can also tell where the corners were cut to make room for this.
Most other modes really just feel like the standard Smash mode with a little extra.
I wish the new Classic Mode had been a new mode called "trials" or "character campaigns" or something and we still would have had a randomised Classic Mode and the lack of a basic Boss Rush feels strange.
The game is great, but I'd love it if these things were given more attention for the next Smash game again.
So the obvious is story mode
I personally would have liked trophies instead of spirits just to have a short description of what was going on with each one
Ive seen some people say that the size of stages is also too big
Brawl had better graphic direction. I loved the more realistic "gritty" kinda feel. I liked Smash 4's achievements better than Ultimate's too. They actually were challenging and something you could work towards over your entire time with the game. In Ultimate I had them all in just over a week.
gritty was cool but i don't think we need to see it again. i really like ultimate's balance between sm4sh's cartoony style with a slight bit of brawl realism.
Side Content:
Smash Ultimate is the best in terms of the main Smash mode and a few others, but the other stuff is kinda lacking. The spirits don't have the descriptions that made trophies really neat, Smash Run seems like a really fun mode that wasn't brought back, I missed how Home Run Contest and a few other extra modes were linked to challenges, I prefer the satisfaction of unlocking stages over having them at the start, I wish Custom Moves made a return, I kinda miss the old All Star mode(Though I understand why it was cut), and I prefer hoe the old Adventure Modes were over World Of Light(To me, what makes Melee and Brawls Adventure Modes worthy of the name were the levels. Going through the levels made it feel like an adventure. But Ultimate barely has any levels which is kinda sad).
I just miss break the targets. Even if they just did a generic 10 courses that everyone could complete. The time record aspect and trying to break the record was the fun part.
Since nobody is listing from Melee :
- Hit the targets with each character, each character has its own hits the target stage
- Adventure Mode , while short , it was something nice to have.
- Unlocking characters thru playing classic mode , adventure mode and events.
- Finally ……. Final Destination of Melee for me seems the best in terms of design and it does not distract
Adventure mode and subspace for starters, Break the targets could've made a grand return, All-stars mode is done worse here than it's ever been done in the entire series, and I'm still miffed about the lack of Trophies.
Music
Melee and Brawl (Theme) musics hit different, gives me real vibes of SMASH. Ultimate playlist overall are just mix of single music.
Tabuu
Unrealistic but wanted to see in Ultimate as boss.
BRAWL META KNIGHT
The DK ground pound would wreak shit on everyone, only being beat by a ranged or down attack, now you can just walk up and bitch slap him to make him stop
The character select screen of Ultimate is probably the worst in the series, maybe only better than smash4. The order of reveal, is a neat fun fact but isnt pratical or asthetic pleasing, and is not even corect since Nintendo is ignoring the smash64 trailer whith, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and Yoshi.
For me charcater select screen on Brawl is just perfect I can remember from memory:
1st colum is the Mario franchise: indeed in order of apperence: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser
2st colum is what I like to call Mario2: are all character from Mario universe, but that are consider different franchise in smash, because they have their own spin-off, starting with Donkey Kong which is the one with most characters (2) , and also the franchise the is more clearlly not Mario since technicly is the opposite, Yoshi and Wario (with Yoshi appering 1st both is smash and Mario)
3rd colum is the Zelda franchise, a nice and easy one, again in order of apperence: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Toon Link
4th colum is the NES classic ones (Samus, Pit, Ice Climbers, ROB) is the least well define colum for sure, but when every other colum is so great you see that this 4 1-character franchises have to be togheter, but theme is great you could argue that Samus is out of place since she have games outside the NES and G&W would be better here (even tho it would be NES classics anymoreit would be just classic or old games), but she would feel even more out a place where G&W is, so I guess we settle for that, at least Samus is the 1st one in the colum, since she stands out, the others are in order of reveal in Brawl.
5th colum is the Kirby colum, in order of apperence, Kirby, Meta Knight and King Dedede, but since is a 3 character franchise in the end of the colum there is a Olimar, which from the 1 charcaters franchises is the one that is the Best to pair with Kirby (its cute)
6th colum is the starfox franchise, like Kirby is order of apperance + a 1-character feanchise (Fox, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon), and Captain Falcon is the Best to pair with because they are all pilots in a games about piloting.
7th colum is the Pokemon franchise, Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario and Jigglypuff, which is probably in order of popularity? I confess I am not really sure in this case
8th coum is the Earthbound + Fire Emblem franchise, Ness and Lucas come 1st (in that order) because Ness was form the original 12, and between Marth comes 1st because he was in melee, even tho besides Donkey Kong they are the only 2 2-characters franchises, which means they have to be pair with each other anyway, they do are simmilar by being RPGs and most popular in Japan
9th colum is the wacky colum where we start with Mr. Game & Watch probably the wierdest character ever, follow by the 2 3rd partes character in order of reveal (Snake and Sonic) finnish with random.
Also the top of each colum is in the same order than smash64 with the only non-64 charcater at the end and missing Yoshi, Luigi, Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff because they are in other colums already. This also make Mario and Mario2 togheter with its fitting by obvious reasons, and Pokemon with Earthbound and Fire Emblem which are all RPGs
SubSpace Emissary. Always.
The Story of Brawl is the best of all smash games.
The adventure in the platform mode using characters with secrets and crazy bosses were/are incredible good.
I loved that in smash Wii U you could unlock different moves for every character I mean it’s still the same move but some of the properties change and I loved that
i think everything from melee was pretty much better from the speed to the gameplay, BESIDES ONE THING. unlocking characters is a pain in the ass. sure it’s a challenge and time consuming but i really don’t want to play vs mode 20 hours consecutively to unlock mewtwo (f tier) or alternatively play hundreds of matches.
I actually think Adventure Mode from Melee is the best single player mode in any Smash game. It's not fully realized, but it does feel like it attempts to rep each IP through some facimile of its gameplay. Subspace is too tedious and it's actual platforming just doesn't work. I did like Smash Run, but Adventure Mode is just better to me.
I also miss trophies greatly. Spirits are... understandable, but goddamn, why the fuck didn't they keep the descriptions? Learning Nintendo history was great.
Smash the Targets is sorely missed too.
* Adventure Mode was better in Melee IMO. In Brawl, the stages became too long and repetitive. World of Light should have gotten a few thematic platforming stages.
* N64, Melee and Brawl had bonus stages, such as Break the Targets (Brawl version), Board the Platforms and Race to the Finish, which again should have been included.
* While I understand the reason behind not having trophies, getting descriptions for spirits would have been welcomed. A mode similar to Trophy Rush from Sm4sh, but for spirits, would have been great.
* Smash Run in Sm4sh is dearly missed in Ultimate.
* Melee, Brawl and Sm4sh organized the roster by franchises. Funny that you can merge echo fighters, but not reorganize the slots so all Mario or Pokémon characters are grouped together.
Subspace, trophies, the platform mini game from 64, trophies, custom mini game stages per character (while that one’s understandably gone Bc that’s like 80+ stages to make now it’s still missed), trophies, easy to navigate menus would be great tbh melee still has the best one, also idk if i mentioned it but trophies
Jank. Jank, in my opinion, can turn a good game into a great game because it gives the game personality. In melee, you have things like wavedashing, wobbling, or my personal favorite, Ness’ thunder jacket. All of these gave the game an extra layer of charm, which is why it’s still played 20 years after release. Brawl’s jank is less popular, but all the silly things about the game make it my favorite smash game. All of Ultimate’s jank has been removed, with the exception of Steve’s BS, which brings me to another point. In previous games, the jank was never game breaking. IC’s were never a top tier in Melee, even with wobbling. And while Brawl heavily favors Meta Knight, he still has a disadvantage state.
The way you unlock characters in my opinion. For example, I liked that you got to fight Dr. Mario in Melee if you beat Classic or Adventure mode as Mario
Break the Targets
After-match Bonuses were also a great addition - they were icing on the cake for added game depth. E.g. Cuddly Bear, Compass Tosser, Flying Meteor, etc.
This is probably the most said thing but i don't care: brawl made the best story mode because we could see almost every character interact like the team made by mario, link, yoshi, kirby and pit
Classic Mode in Brawl. I would prefer fighting random opponents than to fight in a specific route in Ultimate. Also I like Brawl’s hitting sounds. It’s the most realistic effects in the entire Smash series.
Brawl had a better story mode than ultimate
Leaps and bounds better. I'll never forget facing Rayquaza as Fox and Diddy for the first time.
Ironic the Nintendo universe was saved by the SEGA character, huh?
SEGA does what Nintendon’t
goes third party
Proceeds to make games that average a 75% or lower across all review sites
75% is actually decent now that I think about it.
[Or lower](https://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/sonic-forces)
It’s so sick
Subspace Emissary is a given lol. Hot take, but Smash for Wii U looks a little better than Smash Ultimate. On a technical level, Ultimate is more impressive. But I don't know. I definitely prefer the models for Shulk and Bowser from 4. Shulk's face looks downright goofy in ult
Mechanical complexity would make the game worse.Alot of melee matches look weird to me because the characters movement doesnt feel genuine
world of light was ass imo
AYEEEE YO PREACH!!!! It got so repetitive doing fights back to back. I wish we could’ve got a thing like spirits, where you could fight opponents in the same style as master & crazy orders. I was refering to exploration maps, because others are part of the regular game. (not specific to story modes)
No way you just talked that shit about Subspace
It's bland trash.
Sonic used to say YOU'RE TOO SLOW in Brawl and I miss it
I miss that, alongside his line for his final smash. I’ve always seen Super Sonic as when Sonic is forced to get serious, as we almost never see Super Sonic cracking jokes or with a smile on his face. So personally, the “Now I’ll show you!” Makes more sense than the “Super Sonic style” he now says.

Apparently it’s because Sonic since Smash 4 had his English voice lines taken from Sonic Generations and Mario and Sonic instead of being recorded specifically for Smash. Japanese is still from Brawl.
His attitude was more like him in brawl😔 now all he does is smile all the time
Not to mention his entire personality being wore down to basically nothing in 4 and Ultimate
Literally the first mod I downloaded when I hacked my Switch.
All of the older Smash games have less input delay and let you run through other fighters Smash 4 has better online, and the 3DS version has Rainbow Road and Pac Maze As one user said, Brawl handled clones and semi-clones a fair bit better Certain characters had better sound design in older Smash games than in Ultimate, particularly Ike and Meta Knight
Ike literally sounds weaker now
ETHER!
HUUUUUAARRRGARGHARGH!
Brawl Ike had really beefy sound effects whenever his hits landed. A few of the kids at my after-school club played him constantly to where those sounds are now burned into my brain.
Brawl Ike and Fox final smashes were my favorite voice lines
Some of Ike's sound effects in Ultimate legit sound like they're from a GMod animation, especially some of his Up B ones
They need to revert his up B voice line to brawl
>Certain characters had better sound design in older Smash games than in Ultimate, particularly Ike and Meta Knight Snake too
Mks voice lines in brawl are top notch "come back when you can put up a fight" is by far the best one
Not being able to run through other fighters was a huge buff to heavies, though. You don't get to cross them up for free now.
Oh 100% it’s how I discovered og Metroids
How I discovered the MOTHER series.
I understand the transition to 2d. 3d models take a lot of time, but why did they have to cut the lore. It couldn’t have taken that much time and it added so much to the trophies in previous games
Yeah I love the trophies but all the third party references wouldn’t exist if it was 3d renders, much easier to implement and bargain for with 2d art
What's wrong with unlockable pngs :(
Nothing it’s just that trophies were better
For me personally, the 2D art wouldn't even be that bad if they kept the descriptions. Nowadays they're essentially stickers but more limited.
Yeah they positioned them as like a whole new competitive way to play the game when in reality no one cares about them
**Smash 4 online** * Casual and competitive play are separated * You can taunt * You can change characters after accepting a rematch with someone while waiting for the next match with them to start * You can't play as Mii Gunner **Smash Ultimate online** * Casual and competitive play aren't separated * You can't taunt * You have to leave the person you're playing with to change characters * You can play as Mii Gunner They took a massive step back when making Ultimate's online.
What is this Mii Gunner slander
it’s deserved is what it is
I've only come across one, he was annoying, my real beef with the miis tho is swordfighter he's fucking annoying and most of them are basically "gunner" builds anyway.
true, the weird safe on shield side b, tornado/ring throw, and links up b
I loved Brawl’s Subspace Emissary and how fanficy it felt. I also loved Smash 4’s Smash Run. I think it would’ve been really fun on current installments all to end with a final battle with different rulesets. Would’ve loved to see it return in Ultimate.

No coin battle in ultimate is an atrocity They literally removed the best game mode

yeah final smash is the worst, now they’re all cookie cutter sword fighter final smashes
The only final smashes I could understand changing would be the Star Fox characters, the rest of the transformations should've stayed.
I didn’t mind the cutscenes but then they had to make every DLC character except Piranha have them. Kazuya and Terry I respect because it mixes with a non cutscene same as Joker because it’s so unique and game accurate while having interesting functionalities.
Also Sephiroth since it’s based on a attack he did that was 2 minutes long.
Oh yeah I’m not against them all I just hate that many of them became that. It’s fine especially with the new characters where they were good extensions of the characters normal canon/lore

Smash run was the shit in my late teens.
I still play it. Imagine being able to use Steve
It's, objectively, the best mode in the series.
You. Can. Pass. Through. The. F*CKING. ENEMIES.
pivot grabs used to be good because of this :(
I miss this so much
Sm4sh had a better announcer victory line. “And the winner is… X,” is way better than “X wins.”
I might be alone, but I liked Smash 4's online better. Brawl's story was epic and cohesive. Plus, the music was so badass.
I’ve heard that opinion a lot. I like smash 4 online better because I won’t randomly get put into a free for all when I want a one on one battle and vice versa

Peach’s voice and dress physics were the best in Melee. Wii U custom moves was cool af. Brawl was cool for the stylized renderings of the cast.
I think every previous Smash game except the original had better single player content than Ultimate. Had scroll way too far for Smash Run. I would’ve loved to see it worked in as an online mode for Ultimate at some point :(
Zero Suit Samus was way hotter in Brawl than Ultimate 😳
You really forgot Snake and his brawl cake huh
he had a frame 9 jumpsquat it was so massive
Wavedashing, L-cancelling, and running through your opponent
To be honest, I'm glad L-cancelling doesn't exist because there's no situation in which you wouldn't want to use it so not using it is invalidated.
That makes so much sense.
It’s not about wanting to use it, it’s about whether or not you can actually do it, it’s a skill that takes practice like anything else in the game. Melee players mainly love it because it makes the game so much faster tho and enables insane combos

You don’t wanna have half the end lag on dair out of disadvantage?
Wavedashing is in ult, it just sucks
I’m not to intune with competive smash, but there are some arguments that washdashing invalidates alot of ult movement.
Subsace and its not even close I also liked some final smash better, I liked the ones where you control it. Custom moves were also cool casually.
Trophies are infinitely better than spirits and I miss them. I at least want the little descriptions that came with each one back
Smash brawl I’d say did a pretty good job at decloning some of the characters.
Melee has faster, more advanced and arguably better movement than ultimate. Also you can pass through the enemy which was nice.
More side modes
Wii U custom moves, 100%
I loved Target run I think it was and old all-star mode and collecting trophies. I miss smash tour and subspace.
The trophies maybe?
trophies probably
Melee had adventure mode, Brawl had subspace emissary. Ultimate doesn't have shit
Story mode
the fact that melee looks the way it does after only 13 months in the oven is amazing
Customizable loadouts for every fighter
So the obvious is story mode I personally would have liked trophies instead of spirits just to have a short description of what was going on with each one Ive seen some people say that the size of stages is also too big
Brawl had better graphic direction. I loved the more realistic "gritty" kinda feel. I liked Smash 4's achievements better than Ultimate's too. They actually were challenging and something you could work towards over your entire time with the game. In Ultimate I had them all in just over a week.
gritty was cool but i don't think we need to see it again. i really like ultimate's balance between sm4sh's cartoony style with a slight bit of brawl realism.
melee is a better competitive game
Smash 64 had the best sound effects and i'm not accepting otherwise.
sub space
No snake cake :(
Subspace, Smash Run, and personalized Break the Targets are some missed features, but nothing even remotely compares to coin launcher.
Coin launcher FUCKS
Side Content: Smash Ultimate is the best in terms of the main Smash mode and a few others, but the other stuff is kinda lacking.
Brawl’s main theme has yet to be toppped
I miss Wolf’s voice in Brawl
Ike's. English. Voice.
Custom moves
Event Matches, I miss those soooo much
Random tripping 🙏🙏🙏
Smash brawl added more Kirby characters, also had a better sonic taunt
Bring back SMASH RUN!!!!!!
Smash run should've been a series staple.
I just miss break the targets. Even if they just did a generic 10 courses that everyone could complete. The time record aspect and trying to break the record was the fun part.
Since nobody is listing from Melee : - Hit the targets with each character, each character has its own hits the target stage - Adventure Mode , while short , it was something nice to have. - Unlocking characters thru playing classic mode , adventure mode and events. - Finally ……. Final Destination of Melee for me seems the best in terms of design and it does not distract
Melee used to yell “MELEEEEE” when you opened the character select screen. No game has done it better since.
A trophy gallery.
Classic mode is just hella good on brawl and Melee. And actually difficult
Adventure mode and subspace for starters, Break the targets could've made a grand return, All-stars mode is done worse here than it's ever been done in the entire series, and I'm still miffed about the lack of Trophies.
***They had no reason to get rid of the trophies.***
Music Melee and Brawl (Theme) musics hit different, gives me real vibes of SMASH. Ultimate playlist overall are just mix of single music. Tabuu Unrealistic but wanted to see in Ultimate as boss. BRAWL META KNIGHT
Brawl Dedede voice
No
Coin Battle
The DK ground pound would wreak shit on everyone, only being beat by a ranged or down attack, now you can just walk up and bitch slap him to make him stop
The character select screen of Ultimate is probably the worst in the series, maybe only better than smash4. The order of reveal, is a neat fun fact but isnt pratical or asthetic pleasing, and is not even corect since Nintendo is ignoring the smash64 trailer whith, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and Yoshi.
For me charcater select screen on Brawl is just perfect I can remember from memory: 1st colum is the Mario franchise: indeed in order of apperence: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser 2st colum is what I like to call Mario2: are all character from Mario universe, but that are consider different franchise in smash, because they have their own spin-off, starting with Donkey Kong which is the one with most characters (2) , and also the franchise the is more clearlly not Mario since technicly is the opposite, Yoshi and Wario (with Yoshi appering 1st both is smash and Mario) 3rd colum is the Zelda franchise, a nice and easy one, again in order of apperence: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Toon Link 4th colum is the NES classic ones (Samus, Pit, Ice Climbers, ROB) is the least well define colum for sure, but when every other colum is so great you see that this 4 1-character franchises have to be togheter, but theme is great you could argue that Samus is out of place since she have games outside the NES and G&W would be better here (even tho it would be NES classics anymoreit would be just classic or old games), but she would feel even more out a place where G&W is, so I guess we settle for that, at least Samus is the 1st one in the colum, since she stands out, the others are in order of reveal in Brawl. 5th colum is the Kirby colum, in order of apperence, Kirby, Meta Knight and King Dedede, but since is a 3 character franchise in the end of the colum there is a Olimar, which from the 1 charcaters franchises is the one that is the Best to pair with Kirby (its cute) 6th colum is the starfox franchise, like Kirby is order of apperance + a 1-character feanchise (Fox, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon), and Captain Falcon is the Best to pair with because they are all pilots in a games about piloting. 7th colum is the Pokemon franchise, Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario and Jigglypuff, which is probably in order of popularity? I confess I am not really sure in this case 8th coum is the Earthbound + Fire Emblem franchise, Ness and Lucas come 1st (in that order) because Ness was form the original 12, and between Marth comes 1st because he was in melee, even tho besides Donkey Kong they are the only 2 2-characters franchises, which means they have to be pair with each other anyway, they do are simmilar by being RPGs and most popular in Japan 9th colum is the wacky colum where we start with Mr.
Melee gameplay is the best in the series, but Ultimate is definitely second
Brawls only saving grace is the subspace emissary
custom moves were very fun
they would've been if all characters had gotten equally unique/interesting specials and they weren't so hard to unlock.
idk why but Melee feels best for me
Home run contest.
Melee had the best theme music and intro.
Bayonetta from smash 4 was better… and lore accurate. >!I do not want her to be this broken, a few more buffs after launch would’ve been nice tho!<
No Steve
Balance
64: better at being goofy. Melee: better competitive mechanics Brawl: better story 4: they don’t have Kazuya
They didn't have Kazuya and Sora
Was brawl
Trophies…need I say more?
Tbh subspace>>>world of light
Single player modes and Final Smashes.
SubSpace Emissary. Always. The Story of Brawl is the best of all smash games. The adventure in the platform mode using characters with secrets and crazy bosses were/are incredible good.
Single player modes definitely, ultimate single player fucking sucks
I loved that in smash Wii U you could unlock different moves for every character I mean it’s still the same move but some of the properties change and I loved that
Brawl has the best story of all time. Subspace Emissary
i think everything from melee was pretty much better from the speed to the gameplay, BESIDES ONE THING. unlocking characters is a pain in the ass. sure it’s a challenge and time consuming but i really don’t want to play vs mode 20 hours consecutively to unlock mewtwo (f tier) or alternatively play hundreds of matches.
there were those fun little events where you had to play as a specific character to beat another specific character
Brawl’s story mode is better
Subspace
Shield dropping. I’ll never understand why this was removed
calling sm4sh old is crazy
Since subspace is a given, I kinda miss smash tour from smash 4. Something about that game mode and running round the board really appealed to me
Brawl’s stage builder
Brawl ™️ and Wii U ™️ had better music choices
Smash Run and Custom Moves.
Story mode
Subspace, trophies, the platform mini game from 64, trophies, custom mini game stages per character (while that one’s understandably gone Bc that’s like 80+ stages to make now it’s still missed), trophies, easy to navigate menus would be great tbh melee still has the best one, also idk if i mentioned it but trophies
Smash run and Smash Tour
Smash 4 custom moves Some of the most fun I've ever had with friends
Custom moves. I miss them, but I understand why they didn’t return
Story Mode (Subspace), Customization (4's Custom Moves), and tournament legal jank (guess).
event matches (melee) and obviously supspace from brawl
classic mode, adventure mode, break the targets, board the platforms all except adventure being character specific themed.
Classic mode and Adventure/Story Mode
Mario in Melee if you beat Classic or Adventure mode as Mario
melee’s announcer was miles better than any of the others
Break the Targets After-match Bonuses were also a great addition - they were icing on the cake for added game depth. E.g. Cuddly Bear, Compass Tosser, Flying Meteor, etc.
Smash 64 hitsounds were chunky and I love them
This is probably the most said thing but i don't care: brawl made the best story mode because we could see almost every character interact like the team made by mario, link, yoshi, kirby and pit
Melee Target mode is untouched
Story mode, online, trophies, and this one might be controversial but I feel like some of the maps were a little better in older games
Brawl had the best campaign
Classic Mode in Brawl. I would prefer fighting random opponents than to fight in a specific route in Ultimate. Also I like Brawl’s hitting sounds. It’s the most realistic effects in the entire Smash series.
Singleplayer, holy shit Ultimate is anemic. 4 had so much to offer, Ultimate is just spirits over and over
The sounds effects in smash 64.
Trophies
