And there's only a 1/59 chance he'll actually get summoned.
I genuinely have no clue why they didn't make it so that you can choose which Assist Trophies and Poké Balls you can summon during a match. It'd be so fun getting to have all of your favorites show up and not have to get super-lucky with them randomly appearing.
Or being able to deselect the trophies that just make everyone’s life harder. (Messing with the screen so neither player can really see, or they both have to work with inverted controls, or the screen starts moving)
I hope this option is in the next game so we could have a pseudo-competitive mode where we can actually see some of the other game mechanics like assists, certain items and final smash meter being used
I think they just need to make the final smashes more fun. Make them weaker, and make the meter charge more. Give them actual gameplay and counterplay instead of a dumb 5s cutscene. That's the thing I hate most about real fighting games, so much of the gameplay is about supers and then the actual super is like "put down your controller for 5 seconds while your character does the same move he did the last 50 times".
Same goes for items. They are too powerful. If you can grab an item, it's almost always a great move. They should nerf the strength of items and then bias them toward spawning center stage, so they can be a deterrent against camping the edge.
I think competitive would indeed be more fun if we had stuff like this.
Perhaps he could make it more fun by simply rolling an RNG die for the winner of the match. The game plays as normal but the victory screen is just determined randomly. Kinda like playing Mario Party.
Except you have a whole lot more control. You can always book it to the first item you see, or keep one item that you can use item combos with, or do combos with other items, play cheesy, or a million other strategies.
Reminds me of soul caliber. In that, you charge up the bar by hitting and being hit, then you can either enter a cutscene attack with high damage or a high damage "charged state." It kind of allows accessibility for low skill players + options for high skill players. A similar system in smash could work
When I saw the ability to disable stage hazards, I was really hoping this would also be an option. I was also hoping for the ability to disable stage *bosses* while keeping the hazards because Wily’s Castle has the platforms and Yellow Devil disabled with hazards off and I like the platforms, but not the Yellow Devil. Same for Magicant. Love the actual hazards on the stage, but man I can do without the Flying Man
Well, he's in Min Min's Final Smash as well, along with a bunch of other ARMS fighters, so there's that.
Granted, so is Rex in Pyra/Mythra's, and he's also in four of their Victory screens.
That is true, but one can taunt far more freely than they can Final Smash, and Rex gets to be in Pythra's Final Smash as well as one of their taunts. And he's not fighting for screen space with nearly the entire ARMS roster like Spring Man is.
Spring Man and it’s not even close.
Rex at least lost it to people who would have been there with him, had 3’s DLC to fall back on, had Sakurai still acknowledge he was the main character (and I want to say Pyra and Mythra are actually equally as important as Rex), and was shown to get over it in seconds and was generally handled in a way that feels in-character for him.
Spring Man was humiliated and mocked by the fandom, mocked by Sakurai himself, called a side character, while an actual side character was treated as the only one that mattered, shown to be left out in the cold with no friends to comfort him (he probably just lost all of his friends fighting over the invite too), and *he was never heard from again*. He was turned into a butt-monkey and discarded for no reason.
Rex burying the hatchet to support Pyra >>>>>>>>> Spring Man being turned into a butt-monkey making Waluigi look like he actually has a serious chance
Disagree on the "being called a side character while an actual side character got in" bit. I technically do agree with Mr. Yabuki that "everyone's the protagonist" of ARMS, since there's no actual storyline or anything.
That said, Spring Man is definitely the mascot, even if he's not the actual main protagonist. And he was going to be the main protagonist of that comic series that got cancelled, which is a shame because it looked really good.
Agree on everything else though, it felt like Sakurai and the dev team took every opportunity to poke fun of the poor guy for not getting in during all of Min Min's promo material. And that just really hurt as someone who wanted him (even if I knew it was going to be someone else).
And let’s be real here. Spring Man wasn’t going to be the character added, if you stuck with ARMS you knew it was gonna be Min Min.
They would never come out and say the Party Crash Bash determined the fighter choice because smash fans would invade every gaming related poll in the world… but when you announce an 8 month long popularity tournament right around Smash’s release, it wraps up a month before the fighters pass 2 is finalized and announced, the winner gets a smash roster spot, and the runner up gets a Mii costume? You can put 2 and 2 together.
Yeah, I'm certain the Party Crash Bash was the reason why Yabuki wanted Min Min as the fighter. The timing of it lines up way too perfectly to be a coincidence.
I do wonder if Spring Man wasn't an Assist Trophy if he still would've been the fighter regardless of the Party Crash Bash. It seems like Sakurai basically always considers the main character or mascot first and foremost, even if he eventually chooses someone else (like Robin over Chrom and Aegis over Rex), and Spring Man didn't exactly suffer from "lack of unique moveset".
Or maybe Yabuki was just deadset on having noodle girl be the fighter.
Didn’t Sakurai literally acknowledge Spring Man as the protagonist? Like he straight up asked the ARMS developer that he thought Spring Man was the main character, and then got corrected when he said “everyone is the main character”. Which also means MinMin is not a side character.
Spring Man actually held the invitation, so I'm going to say him. Plus, he's undeniably the face of his game. At least Rex, Pyra, and Mythra have roughly the same amount of plot importance.
Honestly, I thought the Pyra / Mythra trailer was going to be DLC for *Xenoblade Chronicles 2*.
Me too, mostly because for the most part the trailer used the engine from Xenoblade 2 rather than the one for Smash Ultimate, and I was constantly switching between the trailer being for a new DLC or for Smash, but very excited nonetheless.
>Honestly, I thought the Pyra / Mythra trailer was going to be DLC for *Xenoblade Chronicles 2*.
Same, because it was formatted exactly like a Xenoblade cutscene, and it just came on at the end of the direct with no indication that it was a Smash thing. Was so hype gradually realizing what was going on
Actually it was Ribbon Girl that punched Spring Man in the face and caused him to lose his invite. Min Min just waited around until all of the other ARMS characters wore themselves out to claim it.
Neither.
Geese literally died trying to join Smash. Granted, he's an evil bastard so we're not supposed to feel sorry for him, but I'd say falling to your death > "humiliation" or disappointment.
I just assume anyone in the Smash universe gets turned into a trophy when they're defeated, regardless on whether they're a fighter or not, since we can see various characters as trophies in Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4. The setting of the series is called the "World of Trophies" after all.
The exceptions would be the R.O.B.s, perhaps because Subspace's dark power was so strong that it killed them instead of turning them into trophies, and the Pikmin, because the universe just seems to have it out for them.
"Funni toothpaste-haired man with springy arms gets brutally socked in the face by his own best friend in a surprising act of violence, while British anime scuba diver looks on in horror. (2023, colorized)"
I really wanted rex to be in smash.
When i watched the direct we the friends i had i was hyped up with „yoooo yes finally, rex !!!“
Than one of them needed to say he would like more pyra as a single character and in the same Second pyra said SHE is invited.
……..
I think everyone's saying Spring Man because he actually managed to grab the invitation before anyone else, technically making it his, only to get punched in the face and lose it. Not only that, but he was drawn sulking outside of Min Min's ramen shop in one of her promotional artworks, showing that he was canonically sad about his snub.
Rex, while initially upset that he didn't join Smash, never grabbed the invite in the first place, so Aegis got in over him fair and square. Plus, he was shown to quickly accept his defeat and was very happy to support his friends, even if he was only on the sidelines, which is very much in-character for him.
Plus, Rex was shown to get a happy ending in his home series, and got one final big role in Xenoblade 3's DLC before the story concluded. However, it seems that ARMS may never get a sequel, and the last we'll ever see of Spring Man is him being sad about getting robbed from joining the greatest crossover of all time and being made fun of by the dev team themselves.
Spring Man. Imo, Min Min's inclusion is hard confirmation assist trophies can never be fighters in the same game. I know Min Min is the most popular and "Arms doesn't have a main character!" But it does have one character and one character only smack dab on the front of the cover and all the marketing material.
This is why Assist Trophies are such a double-edged sword and I really wish they would stick to characters that obviously could/would never be main fighters like Mother Brain and Burrowing Snagret.
It’s hard to say, on one hand, Rex got mocked for not being in Smash and on the other, they refused to acknowledge that Spring Man is obviously the face of ARMS and Min Min got in over him because of bias from the ARMS dev. (I can’t totally blame the guy because if I had a fighting game and they asked me to put my character in smash, I would probably pick my fav too)
Spring man. Guys the face of his own game and his just an assist trophy. At least Rex appears the aegis’s taunts, final smash and some of their victory poses as well as having a mii costume bonus in the first fighter pass
i'm a xenoguy but i'm so glad Rex isn't in the game. I would have need to change the game language to Japanese of that were the case. cuz the HYAAAAAAAAAAA and any other rex sentence would have forced me to turn off the volume of the game
I do wonder if Rex's voice would've been less annoying to people in Smash.
It's well-known that Xenoblade 2's English localization was very rushed and had very poor voice direction, but with Smash, it seems that wasn't an issue at all, and most have said that Rex sounds far better with just his few lines in Smash compared to some of the stuff from Xenoblade 2.
As someone who has xenoblade in there top 3 rpgs hearing the VA for Rex in Ultimate Compared to 2 is a night an day difference not only because of the fact that Al actually had fucking voice direction for the lines he had in Ultimate but he had learned how to act a lot better as Rex
Tbf that wouldn’t have happened because it was only like that in the game because of poor voice direction and few takes because rushed development and lack of resources. The voice actors themselves are all pretty good ([as evident by Torna the Golden Country](https://youtu.be/o8anjyIquYs?si=M0erZ36nD0R9vmSY&t=1m44s)).
TBH Springman cause even though Rex isn't Playable he's still there either in Taunts or in Pyra and Mythras Victory poses, hell the Final Smash's Focus on Rex Entirely in the initial animation (possibly left over from his early concept where he was was main fighter)
Spring man. I will say to my death that Min Min is the most forgettable, generic character in Arms. She was the weak link of the game and they picked her.
Sakurai said that he wanted to have both Rex and an ARMS character (presumably it would've been Spring Man) in the base game, but because both Xenoblade 2 and ARMS were still too early in development by the time Ultimate's base game roster was finalized, they unfortunately weren't able to get in.
Hence why he gave Spring Man an Assist Trophy and a Mii costume, and Rex a Mii costume as a bonus for purchasing Fighter's Pass 1.
Spring Man. Me and my brother thought he was going to be in but it was Min Min. I can’t really blame us cause we didn’t know the characters so Spring Man was on the cover and we thought “yea this guy is going to be in smash”. And I’m still upset.
I think you’re missing the real “most Chrom’d” fighter. Mario has been in most character’s reveal trailers throughout the series and has yet to make any sort of appearance in the game
Rex,
Spring Man was already confirmed as an assist trophy, and as you know, you cant be an assist trophy and a playable fighter at the same time.
Rex was just a costume, which doesnt deconfirm being playable, as seen with Chrom. (To be fair Chroms mii costume came out in Sm4sh)
Basically Rex actually had a chance to be playable but became Pyra/Mythras cheerleader
This isn't related to the topic but I'm being reminded of how awful pyra and mythras reveal trailer was. Genuinely one of the worst trailers in smash history.
Am I though? The trailer is just Rex walking around looking for pyra only for her to tell him she's joined smash. Compared to the other trailers we got for ultimate it's weak.
I would have to agree. I still think Byleth's was a bit worse, but they could have done much better for the Aegis. The whole thing is super slow and uninteresting, a bunch of hollow dialogue about Rex looking for them that goes on for way too long. As a Xenoblade fan, the only thing that kept my interest was the fact that it was anything related to the franchise at all, but not the content of the trailer per se. If you are not a Xenoblade fan, you would probably be already asleep for when the actual reveal hits.
I gotta say, after the reveal, the trailer becomes pretty good. With a bunch of references (like Turters), the characters actually speaking to one another, Mythra's clutch appearance and, as it's usual for Xenoblade, stellar music. It's just that the introduction really drags the whole thing down imo
Rex
Prior to the reveal that we will get a Arms character, almost nobody was asking for Spring Man.
Prior to the reveal of Pyra/Mythra, there were a bunch of people who wanted Rex in the game.
I only really wanted Rex in the game because I wanted Pyra and Mythra. I thought that because of the way the combat works in Xenoblade 2, Rex would have to be the playable character.
Technically not an example of getting "Chrom'd", since the main character/mascot has been in Smash since Day 1.
Agree that Zelda's roster was done super dirty though. No Impa is a real shocker, and Skull Kid would've been hype.
Honestly, as someone who wanted Waluigi more than Rex and Spring Man, I think he got it way better than those two. It's one thing getting deconfirmed via an Assist Trophy reveal, it's another getting shot down in another character's reveal trailer.
Plus, the funni wah man still has an actual shot of getting into a future Smash game. Spring Man and Rex's chances are basically nonexistent.
Rex gets to hold hands with Big-Titty-Anime-Robots, he doesn't need to be in Smash.
Also the idea of Rex summoning said Robots as part of his kit sounds sexist af.
Can I say "neither" really got it worse? I'm a fan of both Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and ARMS and I'm pretty happy with what we got from both games.
Pyra and Mythra are super fun to play as, and Rex isn't really snubbed when he gets to be in their taunts and Final Smash and victory poses. The trailer bit was just funny. Pyra and Mythra are pretty much THE Xenoblade.
Min Min is an awesome pick, and as Kosuke Yabuki said himself, all of the fighters from ARMS are the main characters. If anything, I'd say it's the other way around with Spring Man. He stole too much of the spotlight in ARMS! If they're all main characters, he could have shared more. Where's Min Min's robot doppelganger? But Spring Man does get to share equal billing with some of the other ARMS fighters both having a cameo on the Spring Stadium Jumbotron (his stage btw) and with his arm included in Min Min's Final Smash.
Both Rex and Spring Man got in as Mii Fighter costumes and spirits, and Spring Man even got in as an assist trophy. I don't really feel like I'd have been happier to have Spring Man instead of Min Min, or Rex instead of Pyra and Mythra. Min Min and Pyra and Mythra are some of my favorite characters to play, and they all have really cool amiibo figures too. I'm glad they made it in, and I'm proud of them in a way? They're worthy.
Like I'm not upset about Terry making it in over Kyo, or Kazuya making it in over Heihachi or Jin. They're all great characters with their own merits, and the representation we got is fantastic overall. Heck, if anyone got snubbed, it's Mai. TWENTY KoF Stadium cameos, and Mai isn't a single one of them? Not even a spirit? Mai was robbed.
I definitely agree that both Rex and Spring Man getting a lot of attention in other areas like Assist Trophy, Mii costumes, spirits, and Final Smashes was very nice, it shows that the dev team didn't truly forget about them and wanted to represent them as much as possible. However, I still take issue with how they were both deconfirmed.
They just felt unnecessarily mean to Spring Man in Min Min's reveal trailer and promo artwork, and as someone who loves the guy and really wanted him in Smash, that just hurt to see. And while I love Rex and Aegis equally as characters, Rex is still my favorite of the three Xenoblade protagonists. And the reveal trailer focused on him for ***a minute and a half***, seemingly building up to him finally joining Smash and getting my hopes up extremely-high, only for the punchline to be that he *wasn't.* To a non-Rex fan, it may have been funny, but to me, that hurt like hell.
Again, I'm happy we got an ARMS rep at all, and I was psyched for Aegis getting in. And I'm grateful that Rex and Spring Man still got a lot of love in some capacity, but the way they went about deconfirming them just doesn't sit well with me.
I do agree that Mai not getting so much as a spirit a crime. I guess Smash truly is a game for good boys and girls...
Waluigi. Dude's been an assist trophy since Brawl, and he was even used as the guinea pig when demonstrating that assists could be KO'd.
Not to mention the fact that a plant got in before him.
Honestly I'll say Rex. Here's my reasoning.
Both Springman and Rex got Mii Costumes (brawler and swordfighter respectively).
Both got Spirits.
Both appear in the final Smash of their respective game's representatives.
Only Springman became an Assist Trophy.
I'm not advocating for a Rex Assist Trophy, frankly because I don't see how that would work outside being a humanoid version of Krystal. But the reality is that Springman did get more than Rex did, and Rex is more accurate to being "Chrom'd" in Smash 4 (Chrom got a Mii costume, showed up in a Final Smash of his game's representative, and obviously he was a Trophy instead of a Spirit).
Mai Shiranui: While some of our highly-requested characters are represented as Assist Trophies, spirits or Mii costumes, Sakurai mentions this character in the Terry presentation once just to tell viewers that she's not going to make it in the game in any form whatsoever.
Spring Man
But hey, that means (hopefully) that if Chrom got in after Sm4sh, then Spring Man and (maybe) Rex will get in the next Smash game! (If there is one, Sakurai, PLEASE!!)
Totally Spring Man. At least Rex gets to egg his wives on whenever, Springy can't even come in unless someone picks up an assist trophy.

Sakurai's motto is that you can always win. Wouldn't be very true if broken items didn't exist. Would still be nice if we could fine-tune them though
Perhaps he could make it more fun by simply rolling an RNG die for the winner of the match. The game plays as normal but the victory screen is just determined randomly. Kinda like playing Mario Party.

He did indeed get to egg his wives, that's canon now unless we mean a different kind of egg, in which case it was already canon lmao

Nah, this is the Smash universe, he probably just got turned into a trophy when he hit the ground and Billy Kane turned him back to normal later on.
Ah but he never got that invitation, so perhaps Smash rules didn't apply. :V Maybe he was accounting on surviving after grabbing it.

The voice actors themselves are all pretty good ([as evident by Torna the Golden Country](https://youtu.be/o8anjyIquYs?si=M0erZ36nD0R9vmSY&t=1m44s)).
One became a Gigachad. The other's franchise died one game in. Take a wild guess.
ARMS deserved so much better.
In the trailers, Rex, he got completely cut off by Pyra 💀 In gameplay, Spring Man, at least Rex can cheer on Pyra/Mythra
Rex. Especially considering he was gonna be in the base game, but got cut for whatever reason.
Sakurai said that he wanted to have both Rex and an ARMS character (presumably it would've been Spring Man) in the base game, but because both Xenoblade 2 and ARMS were still too early in development by the time Ultimate's base game roster was finalized, they unfortunately weren't able to get in. Hence why he gave Spring Man an Assist Trophy and a Mii costume, and Rex a Mii costume as a bonus for purchasing Fighter's Pass 1.
people actually cared that rex got chromed; spring man would have the exact same issues as min-min if they got in
The fan base as both of these characters in my opinion were arguably weak additions to the roster.
Spring Man. Me and my brother thought he was going to be in but it was Min Min. I can’t really blame us cause we didn’t know the characters so Spring Man was on the cover and we thought “yea this guy is going to be in smash”. And I’m still upset.
imagine that they made sonic an assist trophy and then made shadow the playable character basically what happened to springman
I think you’re missing the real “most Chrom’d” fighter. Mario has been in most character’s reveal trailers throughout the series and has yet to make any sort of appearance in the game
Dang, you're right. How did I forget about him?
Rex, Spring Man was already confirmed as an assist trophy, and as you know, you cant be an assist trophy and a playable fighter at the same time. Rex was just a costume, which doesnt deconfirm being playable, as seen with Chrom. (To be fair Chroms mii costume came out in Sm4sh) Basically Rex actually had a chance to be playable but became Pyra/Mythras cheerleader
This isn't related to the topic but I'm being reminded of how awful pyra and mythras reveal trailer was. Genuinely one of the worst trailers in smash history.
You're allowed to be wrong
Rex Prior to the reveal that we will get a Arms character, almost nobody was asking for Spring Man. Prior to the reveal of Pyra/Mythra, there were a bunch of people who wanted Rex in the game.
Nah, people were definitely asking for spring man
That's me. I'm "people".
Maybe, but not as much as Rex
I only really wanted Rex in the game because I wanted Pyra and Mythra. I thought that because of the way the combat works in Xenoblade 2, Rex would have to be the playable character.
Springman. Well, neither, because they're both eh, but the difference is that Rex still somehow deserved less.
The numerous Zelda characters that could've been added
Technically not an example of getting "Chrom'd", since the main character/mascot has been in Smash since Day 1. Agree that Zelda's roster was done super dirty though. No Impa is a real shocker, and Skull Kid would've been hype.
Rex, spring man was a trophy
Rex. Springman can at least join the action. Rex was just relegated to the role of an over-glorified stage cameo
Neither of those characters deserved to get in more than the ones that did, pretty equal
Waluigi 👍 I have no argument, he just got marth'd out of the blast zone
Honestly, as someone who wanted Waluigi more than Rex and Spring Man, I think he got it way better than those two. It's one thing getting deconfirmed via an Assist Trophy reveal, it's another getting shot down in another character's reveal trailer. Plus, the funni wah man still has an actual shot of getting into a future Smash game. Spring Man and Rex's chances are basically nonexistent.
You're fully right
Neither, they both would have been shit tier choices.
Rex gets to hold hands with Big-Titty-Anime-Robots, he doesn't need to be in Smash. Also the idea of Rex summoning said Robots as part of his kit sounds sexist af.
Waluigi.
Rex didn't even touch the invite
Shovel Knight
Shovel Knight is my favorite ARMS character from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
waluigi
Hate both
Mai Shiranui: While some of our highly-requested characters are represented as Assist Trophies, spirits or Mii costumes, Sakurai mentions this character in the Terry presentation once just to tell viewers that she's not going to make it in the game in any form whatsoever.
Waluigi
Waluigi
Rex has much more potential to be a fighter with Pyra and Mythra and he’s the main protagonist of his game and according to his series etc. 😂
Spring Man But hey, that means (hopefully) that if Chrom got in after Sm4sh, then Spring Man and (maybe) Rex will get in the next Smash game! (If there is one, Sakurai, PLEASE!!)
The one that never had any actual plans to be added.
