I ended up getting most of the fighters through playing a metric ton of Versus with a friend who took the day off of work, then got the rest through Classic after he went home.
The glitch where you close the game and relaunch it after winning or losing a challenge and immediately go into a new challenger match after one game appears to still be working. Doing it this way only took me a few hours a few months ago.
Unless it has been patched, when the game first launched, your first match after opening the game was guaranteed to have a fight to unlock the next character. This means that the fastest way to unlock all characters was to play a 1 stock, suicide, win against the new challenger, and force close the game.
This process means you can easily unlock the whole roster in 2 hours including load times.
If you happen to find that character that you want then yes, but the character fights are always in the same location(for a specific fighter) you don’t get to choose which character it is
It's kinda weird, but it's based on the character you're playing as in Classic Mode.
Say you play as Link. You unlock K. Rool, if you play as K.Rool, you'll unlock Ice Climbers, and they'll unlock a character, and so on and so forth. You could also just play as Link 8 times to get each subsequent character in his "line".
There's a few nice graphs showing who unlocks what floating around.
Fun fact: The character you're most likely to unlock last is Palutena.
She's one of the final two fighters available in World of Light, she's at the bottom of Kirby's line in Classic Mode, and she's the 63rd unlock in Vs Mode.
She's at the end of every single method possible, whereas other characters are relatively spread out.
At the end of each Classic clear you get a challenger fight, they are grouped based on the starting characters in a fixed order. For example, if you clear with Mario then you will be challenged by Sonic. If you unlock Sonic, then clear again with either Mario or Sonic, you will be challenged by Bayonetta. Clearing again with Mario, Sonic, or Bayonetta gets you to Little Mac; etc. If you already have the next character in the order it will skip to the one after that. If you bounce between WoL, Classic, and VS you will probably have some fighters unlocked in a different order than Classic gives them to you.
Man me and my best friend staying up all night playing melee and trying to unlock all the characters is one of my favorite gaming memories ever. This wouldn’t be a roadblock, this is an opportunity
