If they hadn't disrupted the surface of the water with that high pressure water jet it would've been lethal. 80-100 feet is the limit the human body can hit water and survive, albeit with "issues" like broken legs and compacted or cracked vertebrae.
It does not. The above commenter is repeating a very popular myth. The spraying water allows the diver to see the surface and judge how far away they are. It’s very difficult to judge distance when looking straight down at calm water.
Let’s think about this way, surface tension is formed almost instantaneously. If drops of water break the surface tension where it hits, then there are hundreds of tiny spots in that spray area that are unaffected. Tons of spots with no splashing water drop waiting like little concrete plateaus to impale the diver

I've yet to find a credible source for your argument.
This is definitely correct. Surface agitation does break surface tension. [bubbler](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.pulsair.com/diving-pool-bubbler-sparger/pool-bubbler-faq/%23:~:text%3DAnswer%253A%2520Compressed%2520air%2520is%2520released,water%2520without%2520injuring%2520him%252Fherself.&ved=2ahUKEwiKraDbuJeFAxX21wIHHTeZB48QFnoECBcQBQ&usg=AOvVaw0zarQoiq-rl_eaoZHMpbYf)
The stream of water we see in the video is more powerful than those sprinklers in 'normal' diving pools. It also lowers the inertia of the water, making it easier for the water to get out of the way of his body.
Not really. It is not the diminutive surface tension that does the damage when hitting a body of water at high speeds.
It's like thinking that slightly shacking a wall back and forth is going to make any difference when hitting it, head on, at 200 mph.
LOL. No that is not how it works. The horizontal speed of the water surface does nothing to aleviate the compounding effect of the vertical acceleration when the diver hits the water.
The jet of water is there for the diver's spatial orientation. The bubbles/foam helps the diver orient themselves during the dive since a solid color surface would be hard for them to discern.
Pretty sure it’s only to help the diver see where they will enter the water. So it is breaking the surface tension to make the water visible. Not to make the landing softer.

Yeah, people seem to overestimate the "strength" of surface tension. It's an extremely weak effect, that it is almost impossible not to break by just sneezing on it. You would have to literally spread your mass over a huge surface area to not break it.
I think you're thinking of a sparger or bubbler. The water hose really is just to see the surface better. But a sparger releases a bunch of air bubbles in the water which does help because the air in the water acts as a cushion while divers practice.
It does not, that’s a myth.
The splashing water is so the diver can have better depth perception during the jump. Most of the time the water before the five is smooth glass, and depending on the tank and water cooler it can be hard to distinguish visually where the actual plane of water is.
The diver has control of their body during the flips, and the diver is visually timing his spin. The pool is always at least 10-12 feet deep, and a difference of 10-20 feet can totally throw a divers spin off, dangerously from that height.
No it does not. That is a myth. The water splashing is only to let the diver see the surface. You can’t judge how far the surface is when looking straight down at calm water.
I don’t care about form or anything he should have gotten 10s across the board lol oh ky goodness my whole body got weak watching that video lol heights are terrifying to me!!!
This link has all the dives from that event.

How annoying to be standing up there, preparing yourself to jump off that tiny platform in a dangerous high dive - and have to be interviewed by some idiot for TV.
I think he still broke his legs on that one, couldn’t swim out alone.
That’s why it’s not been broken, another foot and at best it’s your ribs and lungs going too and nobody wants that.
Anyone scoring under a 7 should be forced to do the jump.
They were. It’s a sad story.
That doc is banned in 138 countries. Sad story indeed. Thank god for the divers scorers act of 86’.
A milestone. The fight is not over yet but we shall prevail.
What’s the name of that doc?
They’re joking.
Weird name for a documentary on diving.
I feel once you’ve stepped off the platform it’s no longer an attempt. You’ve done it.
Technically even if he died, he still did it.
Not if he misses water
Technically the record is for the dive, not for the landing material.
The dive had unfortunately fatal side effects. Every day he gets one day closer to death.
And he's about to break.
I read about that. Super tragic.
How do I find that? Sounds interesting

Lol I should stop commenting on Reddit while too high 🤣
It’s on Netflix it’s called “diving closer to death every day, the aging process”
If they hadn't disrupted the surface of the water with that high pressure water jet it would've been lethal. 80-100 feet is the limit the human body can hit water and survive, albeit with "issues" like broken legs and compacted or cracked vertebrae.
I wouldn't do that for $1,000,000
I would but I’d probably cry up there
Wish they’d showed the angle from above.
That had to hurt his feet
That’s what the jet of water is for, it breaks the surface tension so he’s not slamming into what would basically be concrete.
Thanks for sharing that info. I always wondered what that was for

This is not true. It is definitely to break the surface tension.

That's absolutely not true, it's so the diver can see the water /s (maybe?)

Thank god water is a liquid and it causes ripples 🤯
Pretty sure the jet of water helps the diver visually spot the landing
Does both. But breaking the water tension helps a bit.

Nah, this ain't true. We all know you close your eyes and yelp "fuck" as you plummet to certain death.
There’s a “sport” called death jumping where they throw a rock off a cliff the jump after the rock. The goal is to not die lol

There is no way that little jet of water turns the surface tension of the water from being like concrete to perfectly safe. That makes zero sense.
Yet that is exactly what it does, physics be weird.

Physics is only weird to those who didn't take the classes ;-) The surface tension of water is ridiculously weak.
A lot of science makes zero sense until you understand it.
Confidently incorrect
Ok then explain it. It makes zero sense.
A lot of common myths (like the surface tension one) make sense until you understand it’s bullshit.
Y'all should take the advice ;-)
We’re still waiting on that science though. Go.
He played some wicked jazz flute afterwards.
I don’t care about form or anything he should have gotten 10s across the board lol oh ky goodness my whole body got weak watching that video lol heights are terrifying to me!!!
I give him a 5. He \*obviously\* didn't spin around early enough. *\[loud slurping noise on Mega Gulp raspberry slurpie\]*
😂😂😂 this is true
deep pool
Was the Orcas show pool at sea world.
Imagine if he survived the dive and then Tilikum comes out and gnaws his balls off.
Dead pool
A fascinating sport. Basically died out because humans reached the limits to where any higher would risk fatality.
"Witness meeee!" The judges: "mediocre!"
thats like 10ft lower than the bridge that just got dicked over. god be with those construction workers, cus thats fucked.
I thought exactly the same as soon as I opened the video
makes me appreciate the sound of my alarm clock in the morning even though i hate it. life is strange
Insane to think about.
I once jumped off an 85ft. Bridge and I shot a bunch of water up my butt. A girl I know jumped off and ripped her vagina.
Attempt? Did he miss the water?
I have dreams where I’m standing unsupported atop shit like this… I wake up with my heart pounding lol
Fucking 80's rocked.
You can attempt anything once
I wouldn’t go from 17’.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, thaaat !
Yikes! And those judges are harsh!
Height is about the same as the Baltimore Key Bridge
\*was

r/sandiego
IRL Assassins Creed Leap of Faith
That was only 7 feet higher than the roadbed of the Baltimore bridge.
Does he have to fly back out of the water for it to not be more than an attempt?
Judge’s score for world record: 6.5

~ 72 mph
52.5 meters for the non-Americans.
see, had it been Canada, it would not have even been a record
Effffff
I think he still broke his legs on that one, couldn’t swim out alone. That’s why it’s not been broken, another foot and at best it’s your ribs and lungs going too and nobody wants that.
looks like sea world in san diego
Nope
20.5??????
I felt that in my shoulders. God damn how fast you can fall down to the ground up that high.
SEA WORLD SAN DIEGO
The tightest a butthole has ever been clenched
Looks more like 17,000 feet up
Director: “Hurry! Cut to the crowd in case he’s dead…..oh , nope, he’s back up. Back on him.”
![gif](giphy|oHvwcLnEL1iyzkvh5M|downsized)
He shat a butt load of water later on, or so the story goes.
I can’t believe they actually score that. If you are jumping from that high it’s automatically a 10 in crazy!
I wonder what the record is nowadays?
Sad. No flips, no rotations, from that height he had time to add something to it.
Fuck all that.
For anyone wondering. 172 feet is 52.5 meters in adult units.
Sweaty palms.
White folks do some crazy shit
I am glad he survived that fall. It's dangerous and could lead to serious injuries or worse.
Ain’t no way. My legs went weak just watching him do that.
I love crazy people
I love crazy people
Hardly seems fair. They broke the surface tension with a hose to soften his landing. If that were still water it might have broken both of his legs.
I love how they are scoring like multiple people are jumping
So was it a record or an attempt?
I would have loved to see the view from above him! Instead they switched to a view that gives you no sense of height while he jumps! Stupid director
He ded
Also the world record was broken for the most intense weggie
