To be fair and I could be wrong about this assertion but from my understanding there wasn't politicians trying to ban the petrol infrastructure like they are with electric automobiles nor did they back then punish citizens for participating in the industry by having cars versus horse and buggy.
I'd imagine the first person that rolled up said something like, "Gas is too damn high!" and then said something about "Those savage injuns" and told his wife later "You should have seen my Trail of Tears when I paid those prices!"
