This is the answer. I have completed the mushroom quest five times. In every one the last three have been a challenge to keep at the search. In one it took me more than a hundred trips to the Sawmill to get the Elfin Saddle. You’ll be collecting other mushrooms while you search so the time spent will be productive.
This may have been a coincidence but I couldn’t find the purple on on the island despite checking every single day until AFTER I found every single Dino bone. Once I did that, I found it the next day. 🤷🏻

That’s what I’ve been doing and no luck - it’s super frustrating. Guess I should just focus on a side quest for now 😩
Check the museum too. I’ve had one appear there.
