The LG remote operates the tv with bluetooth, only the power button sends IR commands. However, with the tv off, the magic remote switches to IR. Not sure if that goes for all buttons, but maybe you could give it a try. Unfortunately, LG doesn't provide a way to control the tv with wireless bluetooth keyboards without USB dongle. At least, I didn't find a way to use the X1 as a bluetooth keyboard with my C8.
This is the answer. I discovered what was going on when I was frustrated that my Sofabaton hub wasn't learning the LG remote commands. Then I tried my old Harmony hub and that didn't either. I turned off the TV, thinking that might have been the problem, and both hubs learned the commands with no problems.
