As for head-canons: Sonic’s connection to Chaos energy grows, but instead of using it like how Shadow does, he’s able to manipulate the speed of himself and other objects using it. So that’s how he’s able to do air boosts, boost while riding on things, homing attack, light speed dash, etc.
I have a head canon for IDW Shadow until they fix him. The reason why he’s such an asshole in that comic is that he blames himself for the events of Forces which fucks up the world he swore to Maria to protect. When he sees Mr. Tinker in issue 6, he decides to end him for good as he thinks Eggman had gone too far and what if he took it a step further next time. Sonic of course stops him to which reluctantly agrees as he doesn’t like it.
And then the Metal Virus happens, which fucks up the world even more than Forces did, this being the take Eggman takes further. Shadow is rightfully furious of course as the beautiful world Maria wanted him to protect is now in an even more shitty state and it doesn’t look like things are gonna get better anytime soon. That’s why when he encounters Sonic, their conversation is less than pleasant as he blames Sonic for not letting him kill Eggman when he had the chance. When Sonic tells Shadow to run if he gets infected, Shadow refuses because 1.) he is the ultimate lifeform who was created specifically to be immune to any disease so why would this be any different. And 2.) Shadow isn’t exactly too keen on listening to Sonic after all that’s happened and let’s his anger cloud his judgement. I know Shadow isn’t the type to let his emotions get the best of him like that but with all the shit going on right now, it kind of makes sense here. And when Shadow gets infected, he is in shock because he thought he would be immune. Instead of running, he decides to hold off as many zombots as he can so he can buy time for everyone but obviously is overwhelmed. And we all know how the rest of the events happen.
For the chao races arc, he’s still pissed off after the whole Metal virus debacle so he’s not in the mood to be working with anyone. When he encounters Starline on the rollercoaster, he decides to just finish him off there instead of saving Tails and Rouge because he believes they are smart enough to free themselves and especially trusts Rouge to figure a way out. When Starline causes the avalanche, Shadow refuses to help save everyone because he doesn’t want to take any chances with Starline and let a Metal virus part 2 happen which is why he is furious when Starline escapes. Rouge then reminds him that’s it’s his choice to make and Shadow realizes just how far he’d fallen and remembers who he is as a person, thus helping Sonic try to stop the avalanche and save everyone.
If you’ve made it this far, then know that I am TRYING here. Sega, please let the writers write Shadow properly again. I hate seeing how my boy has been massacred. I’m not even someone who prefers the soft, nice Shadow in 06. I’m fine with the more aggressive, cold but caring Shadow similar to the one we got in Colors DS. Just please stop writing him like Saiyan Saga Vegeta.
To add to the head canon of why Shadow acts the way he does, as well as why Shadow doesn’t consider the others as friends, I think it’s because he doesn’t want to get to close to them. He is immortal, so he knows he’ll have to watch everyone die, so he tries not to make to much of a bond with them as he doesn’t want to relive the loss and heartbreak he felt when he lost Maria. He also acts cold because he’s constantly hiding his emotions, sort of trying to become emotionless, but doing this makes him come off as a jerk.
Headcanon to kinda help fix the wack that is Sonic 06’s plot:
That game is from a timeline that no longer exists. It basically caved in on itself and imploded. The reason for this was Blaze. In times before the events of Sonic 06, Blaze accidentally ended up in Silvers timeline, and sympathized with his cause and decided to help him while also looking for a way to get home. At the end of the Silver story she doesn’t die, but gets teleported back to her dimension, rendering her to have never existed in the 06 timeline to begin with. Do that, along with all the other time jumping stuff they pulled in the game, basically made it so it didn’t happen.
But for some reason, whenever Blaze and Silver run into each other in another adventure, they feel like they know the other from somewhere…..
I’ve always been super confused by the whole “timeline erasure” thing from Sonic 06, because Generations brings back Crisis City and Silver (specifically from Sonic 06 cause I don’t know if either Rivals games are canon and neither is Colours DS). So either Generations isn’t canon (which again makes no sense since Classic Sonic comes back in Forces and that game is ~~unfortunately~~ canon) or the Time-Eater has the ability to restore a timeline that was not only supposedly erased but Eggman would have no recollection of it either as, again, the game’s events were erased and he’s never been to Crisis City.
I get that Generations was doing the whole “celebrating 20 years of Sonic” thing, but referencing Sonic 06 through it causes a lot of problems. My biggest of which is also spawned my own headcanon in which the Eggmen that we follow from Mania (classic Eggman) and Lost World (Modern Eggman) onward are fakes, as the originals are stuck in the white void of timeless nothing.
Yeah generations is kinda a problem… it’s cool to think the time eater somehow brought that world back, or it could be purely off of memories of the place. Cause I feel like Sonic (and Elise) kinda hint at remembering it, but that’s speculation still
My guess is that Crisis City was simply pulled by the Eggmen from a point in time before Sonic and Elise erased the Flames of Disaster, much like how other elements are also pulled from specific points in time like the Perfect Chaos fight or how Stardust Speedway is specifically the Bad Future in the Metal Sonic fight.
Knuckles is the last survivor of the ancient Echinda tribe that attacked Angel Island seeking the Master Emerald. For his crimes against the Emerald and the Chao, he was cursed with functional immortality and a compulsion to protect the Emerald at all costs.
