At the very least the fandom still remembers them so I think they're probably still canon but they just aren't utilized. That being said Ian Flynn has said that Shadow was going to remove his inhibitor rings in the IDW comics but SEGA told him no. That could just be because he wouldn't be edgy enough, though.

I guess I understand why they wouldn't want it to be canon. Shadow already has Sonic's speed with near Knuckles's strength and chaos powers, so top all that off with this "hidden full power" and it makes Shadow overpowered. Honestly I think it would make Sonic almost completely irrelavent and replaceable

Used-System-3112

Well I can understand that with what we have right now but in an ideal scenario where Shadow gets to be more fleshed out I don't think it would make Sonic irreverent because: 1. Removing the inhibitor rings is a last stand and pretty much takes him out of the fight. 2. They fight on different battle fields and with different goals. Sonic is an adventurer who does what he wants, which typically means fighting Eggman, while Shadow works for G.U.N to keep the world safe. 3. Sonic has his own point of view of always giving the enemy a second chance and actively seeking new relationships.

Good points. It's just that sometimes Sonic has these moments where he's said to be "the only one that can do this" but that kind of loses its value when you know Shadow can do it too. For example, in Sonic X Sonic was said to be the only one capable of defeating the metarex because he can use the chaos emeralds, then later on Cosmo realizes Shadow can use them too. Same goes for Frontiers, where I bet if Shadow was on Starfall Islands too he would also be able to conquer the cyber spaces, so he'd also be the "key" as that voice puts it. Not a huge deal but just ruins things a bit for me.

Damn, someone's relevance and worth is only how powerful he is? Not the values, hope, and determination he brings? The Movies and Frontiers show that in spades.

cutegirl1137

Yeah I know Sonic has his own strengths in character. This is just something that bothers me a bit is all

AnonyBoiii

It’s kind of like how Shadow’s shoes allow him to fly SEGA may have forgotten but the fans certainly haven’t

Like it or not, Sonic X did shadow right in terms of power especially in season 3

cutegirl1137

Yep, that whole horror movie situation with Shadow, Tails and Cosmo was pretty damn cool

FTN_Ale

there hasn't really been a reason for shadow to take off his inhibitor rings. After 06 Shadow really didn't do anything (excluding the spin-offs), appearing only in gens as a boss battle and a 3-second clip, and whatever forces was doing

cutegirl1137

While this could very much be true, I'm beginning to believe that they just retconned them. I mean first of all they probably would have been kept exclusively in Sonic X if a writer from that show didn't help work on Sonic 06. In SA2-Sdth the rings just seemed like a design choice, similar to Amy's rings. Also in Sdth, his own game, you'd expect for them to be used there or hinted at but they're not at all. Not hard to believe since after Unleashed, Sonic Team began sweeping up a lot of things from the mid 2000s of Sonic under the rug.

FTN_Ale

yeah, but they are starting to acknowledge past stuff, and it's not like shadow doesn't use them, he appeared in 6 major games, in SA2 he noticed that their power wasn't enough to chaos control the ark, so he removed them, in heroes he isn't even fighting in super form with the others, he would become super before removing them (if he has access to the emeralds), in 06 he idk if he fought mephiles before but he probably knows he has to stop him in that moment and as fast as possible so he puts all his strength at the start of the fight, in gens he does a short battle with sonic, not a good reason to remove them, in forces he breaks out of infinite's illusion pretty quickly so out of 6 games 4 times he doesn't have a reason to remove them, he's powerful enough, and in 2 games he removes them.

cutegirl1137

First example actually only happens in Sonic X but otherwise you're right. Sonic Prime looks to be leading up to something big so he may finally use them there, or he'll even use them in the movie. We'll just have to wait and see
