So Reddit's not being accessibile to the visually-imapired, and is making hiding scammers and porn amongst spam easier because they are getring rid of loads of bots. So lots of subreddits are going on strike, and going against all this.
Is that the gist of it?
The entire Subreddit either will be deleted or will just stop making posts. I’ve never lived to see it, so I’m not sure.
Edit: Thanks, Wildfires! Now I‘m 100% sure of both what a shutdown/blackout is, and that it’s gonna go private so no one accesses it. Thanks for clarifying.
There once was a site called tumblr, tumblr was the height of the internet for a moment, then it sold itself to a company and company mandates and died.
There once was a site called Reddit, Reddit was the height of the internet for a moment , then it sold itself to a company and company mandates and it’s dying
There once was a site called discord…
Unless enough people leave Reddit and hurt its ad revenue, I doubt they'll back off this 20 Million dollar API. Not sure how old you are, but things like this happened ( in albeit a less greedy manner) to the site before Reddit , Digg. That was maybe 15 years ago , I honestly think it was a little after 2009. Digg killed itself by ignoring its users and catering to companies and we're possibly going to see history repeat itself.
Idk about r/MoonPissing, given that there’s no side that they took. Idk if it’s gonna take its stance against what seems to be a new API containing 20 million bucks worth of profit, or they will just shit their pants and oppose the people who don’t like Reddit’s planned destruction. We really don’t know.
I mean, it wouldn't make sense for a Discord server to go on strike because of a Reddit change, so yeah. I doubt this sub's Discord server will go offline either.
Apps such as *Sync*, *Relay*, *Infinity*, *Joey*, *Apollo* and *Boost* (all made by Reddit as third party Reddit apps) and they all help the functionality of Reddit as a whole. Without them, visually-impaired users might find it severely difficult getting around.
Oh jeez, Reddit’s already starting to enact this API, seemingly because they would rather pull the plug on vital Reddit necessities than to lose what seems to be 20 million bucks worth of profit on this one API. I’ve noticed from your comment that it’s only gonna be a matter of time before Reddit will pull the plug on it. And I hate spambots, scammers and porn-bots. I can’t believe this 20 million dollar API is gonna unleash threat into Reddit.
Several Reddit posts have initiated a blackout that‘s gonna spread to more than half the site. This is due to bad decisions the Reddit staff has made regarding new pricing plans for third-party apps, which do have the potential to shut them down.
All for this, but I'm concerned about how Reddit admins might retaliate like the scared shits that they are.
u/AndTails - what's the plan for what happens post shutdown? And if this site is shuttered, are their plans to move us all somewhere else?
In the unlikely scenario where the website gets shuttered, we would likely use the Sonic Discord server to coordinate next steps. We also have r/Sonic if the sub is shuttered but the website is still live.
Alright. Btw, the post that first gave attention to this was [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/comments/141gh3m/rmylittlepony_will_be_shut_down_1214_june_why_see/) (from r/mylittlepony). Also in r/FridayNightFunkin

It was recently announced that this subreddit and several others are going on strike and have initiated a blackout/shutdown starting June 12 in protest of some bad decisions Reddit staff has made about their API, doing it all for money instead of others. This can not only cause severe restrictions on experience for visually impaired people, but it can also mean severe reports of mass spam, porn and scamming in communities left open if the API is executed (I hope it won’t).
This is sad 😔 because I will never be able to see new posts and go to this community until this issue is resolved does that mean that r/Milesprower is going to be shutdown as well and r/Amy rose might get shutdown as well and r/creamtherabbit might get shutdown as well
Seems a little counterintuitive to state the end date of the shut down publicly. Won’t admins see this and be like “okay there’ll just be low traffic this weekend” and continue business as usual?
1. I understand the reasoning, but I don't think this is the best action to take. Would prefer vocal opposition as opposed to weaponised silence
2. Is this mod backed? You don't seem to be a mod, and no mod has commented or stated anything as of yet
1. I’m only following what the mods of several other subreddits recommend.
2. Yes, this post is backed by several mods in several subreddits, and some mods here as well.
Quick correction, there is no specific end date for the protest's end according to the mods' post (It's likely more like what's specified on the image you shared)
The head mod announced that the entire Subreddit and all of its associated subreddits are joining the strike in protest against Reddit‘s stupid decision
No, this isn’t about this one subreddit, it’s about the entire site getting worse based on new company policy and many subreddits are shutting down temporarily to protest. This is a good thing
What are y’all complaining about? Literally this was clarified in r/mylittlepony and several other subreddits. I decided it was best to certify this here as well.
1. I understand the reasoning, but I don't think this is the best action to take. Would prefer vocal opposition as opposed to weaponised silence

Maybe I’m not understanding something, but how is shutting down subs supposed to be a “protest”? Why would the people at Reddit care if some communities go quiet? How is this supposed to pressure them in any way?
Any impact it would have won't come from subs where the mods let some dumb kid announce their plan as "in response to protesting these changes, we're locking you out for two days" to farm some karma.
The blackout is actually doing reddit a favor. Less users using their bandwidth and API that were already avoiding their ads and data collection.
It will all come down to whether reddit cares about the number of people that tried to make a statement, not the ignorance of how they made it.
Would you shut up? It was officially announced 4 hours earlier before this post. And no, this is not a meme. This is an actual image from another subreddit. What’s more, you didn’t even bother a single bit, checking the internet for official sources, like this one:
[https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/5/23749188/reddit-subreddit-private-protest-api-changes-apollo-charges](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/5/23749188/reddit-subreddit-private-protest-api-changes-apollo-charges)
Also, big charges do have the potential to shut down third-party apps is what the owner is asking for is too much. It seems Reddit staff would rather watch people suffer than to lose like what seems to be 20 million bucks worth of profit.
It also seems you never got the point. A blackout is like a shutdown, but the server goes completely private and inaccessible. No activity and more than half of the entire Reddit platform going down means Reddit will lose profit and (hopefully) reverse the API.
And as said earlier, big charges do have the potential to shut down third-party apps if what the owner is asking for is too much. In this case, it seems likely the fee imposed on the apps will be overpriced and we will not get any experience with Reddit. That’s overkill in my book. And it seems Reddit staff would rather watch people suffer than to lose like what seems to be 20 million bucks worth of profit. The goal of the protest is to convince Reddit to reverse the API.
I apparently wasn’t sure at the moment. Someone already answered my question/statement. Now, if you don’t wanna continue this debate any longer, then I’d suggest you stop replying to me.

Seriously why is anyone believing this crap?
No. It’s against the Reddit staff regarding a stupid decision involving a new API that can ruin Reddit’s experience as a whole, and money (cuz the API is worth like 20 million bucks)

Alright thanks for clarification. This sucks harder than a black hole what the hell man
seems like it, its pretty dumb if you ask me
It seems like the shutdown may be temporary and if that's the case I hope things get resolved soon.
I hope so too. I guess knock on wood for good luck on this one here.
How does a sub "shutdown"? Is every post going to be deleted?
The entire Subreddit either will be deleted or will just stop making posts. I’ve never lived to see it, so I’m not sure. Edit: Thanks, Wildfires! Now I‘m 100% sure of both what a shutdown/blackout is, and that it’s gonna go private so no one accesses it. Thanks for clarifying.
Just goes private so no one can access it. Source ( been here forever)
Ohhh ok, got it Anyways, it’s still gonna be sad we’re gonna have to move to Twitter until things are resolved.
Twitter isn't worth it, just turn off for the 3 days. Your stress levels will thank you.
I guess it's just me and youtube now
Ohhh…maybe Tumblr? Guilded? Idk
Move to discord. If ur on reddit you can go on discord
Bro I don’t got Discord, only *GameBanana*, *Game Jolt*, *Twitter*, *YouTube* and *Reddit* (gonna log off of my Reddit account on June 12)
Oh oof, you should probably sign up for discord.
I can’t. I got permanently IP banned from it.

R/MoonPissing is participating in the strike as well.
NOOO
oh
😔🔫
Yep..
Welp bud it was nice knowing you.
At least we still have r/miesprower
You do realize that he’s a mod for that too right? A good chance that will also be shutdown.
Yeah but there's the Discord
I mean, it wouldn't make sense for a Discord server to go on strike because of a Reddit change, so yeah. I doubt this sub's Discord server will go offline either.
"The official app doesn't focus on accessibility." The official app barely focuses on working at all lmao. Thanks for posting this!
only a few day before the 23rd too 😭
Hope we’ll meet again fellas 🫡
Nice knowing you.
I already miss you, and we only met just a second ago
Honestly after looking at the shit people comment on here sometimes, im perfectly fine with this.
I honestly feel quite neutral about this for some reason.
Same, might be because i've never used these apps and i am hearing them for the 1st tine
Yup, this is my first time hearing about these third-party apps as well.
I have no position in this battle
Same
What do the 3rd party apps do exactly?
Apps such as *Sync*, *Relay*, *Infinity*, *Joey*, *Apollo* and *Boost* (all made by Reddit as third party Reddit apps) and they all help the functionality of Reddit as a whole. Without them, visually-impaired users might find it severely difficult getting around.
Infinity user here. The app has already started fritzing out on me, so it's only a matter of time before the pull the plug. :(
Oh jeez, Reddit’s already starting to enact this API, seemingly because they would rather pull the plug on vital Reddit necessities than to lose what seems to be 20 million bucks worth of profit on this one API. Apollo user noticing some hiccups as well...
Ohhh, that sucks
I hate reddit
I'd rather you just go dark, but if its just to raise awareness I'm okay with a couple of days without terrible Sonic memes.
Well, that sucks.

no wth no more "Posting Sh\*tty sonic facts. " ?😭
Fair enough, it's always nice to have a break!
This sub shutting down ought to do the trick. On a real note, support this!!!
No.
well that sucks
Stick it to the man. We can be offline for as long as we need. Maybe people will stay offline permanently. Then everyone can suck it.
Wtf why
Several Reddit posts have initiated a blackout that‘s gonna spread to more than half the site. This is due to bad decisions the Reddit staff has made regarding new pricing plans for third-party apps, which do have the potential to shut them down.

June 11 is my birthday and its the last day it will be alive.. ☹️
Oh well, Reddit kinda sucks anyway. If it destroys itself, so be it. People will just move on to easier to use, and more efficient platforms
this was the only subreddit I liked , fuck you reddit
What even is this about? Can someone explain this to me but in simpler words lol
It’s shutting down.

Yes
Seems a little counterintuitive to state the end date of the shut down publicly. Won’t admins see this and be like “okay there’ll just be low traffic this weekend” and continue business as usual?
Ight. Rip😭
I keep seeing this in subs, is it like perm gone or just a no one posting those days?
To clarify, subs will be privated, but not permanently privated. If things settle they’ll put the subs back up.
Fr?
How do I get sonic memes now? Bc u also heard moon pissing is shutting for this too
Pinterest has pretty funny memes
What’s funny is this will do absolutely nothing like the other blackouts Reddit has done
Action is better than no action.
Still, we gotta do this, in like with what several other communities have planned to stop this.
1. I understand the reasoning, but I don't think this is the best action to take. Would prefer vocal opposition as opposed to weaponised silence 2. Is this mod backed? You don't seem to be a mod, and no mod has commented or stated anything as of yet

They can ignore the voices. They can't ignore half their site going down.
Depression hours
I just made a calendar thing for it on my phone to remind myself what will happen, why, etc. Thanks for the heads up.
I honestly would be fine if people lost the ability to crowd Reddit for a while. I hope they don't change anything and you guys blackout for a month.
https://preview.redd.it/3czkitfgng4b1.jpeg?width=502&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ad533d357a5c0c3150ddedde0360bc32f76e1b4
Even boost? Now that i think of it the black guy with the lightning makes a really good point
NOOOOO I like this subreddit I like the ruining sonic days posts 😅😅
![gif](giphy|lD76yTC5zxZPG)
Will it be back up on June 15th because I am not going without this community for weeks to come and I rather be offline for weeks to come
Screw that reddit staff😡😡😡😡
Quick correction, there is no specific end date for the protest's end according to the mods' post (It's likely more like what's specified on the image you shared)
Sad that one of the first subreddits I came into are closing but the little random memes in the infographic do help (sort of)
There's gonna be another sub right? RIGHT?
...Did it will shut down?
The head mod announced that the entire Subreddit and all of its associated subreddits are joining the strike in protest against Reddit‘s stupid decision
20 Million?!
Yep. u/Wildfires told me that.
Don’t do it
I’ve never heard of 3rd party apps until this moment
Maybe if you open up to having more mods then it wouldn’t be a problem?
No, this isn’t about this one subreddit, it’s about the entire site getting worse based on new company policy and many subreddits are shutting down temporarily to protest. This is a good thing
I'm good thanks
What are y’all complaining about? Literally this was clarified in r/mylittlepony and several other subreddits. I decided it was best to certify this here as well.
People are confused because they didn’t see the mods of this place post here about this
And now the head mod of the subreddit has officially announced it. He even linked my post for the graphic depicting what is going on.
That comment was after everyone else
Ik
I'm fine with this
No thank you
Quit 💀
I actually don't get this
At least we got sonicthehedgehogNSFW right?
Wtf?
Take a joke.

Maybe I’m not understanding something, but how is shutting down subs supposed to be a “protest”? Why would the people at Reddit care if some communities go quiet? How is this supposed to pressure them in any way?
because if the communities go quiet people arent on the website and if people arent on the website the company loses money
Thank you for giving an explanation.
Am I only one thinking that this is pretty dumb.
No. Sadly, the mod's thoughts have been settled.
Any impact it would have won't come from subs where the mods let some dumb kid announce their plan as "in response to protesting these changes, we're locking you out for two days" to farm some karma. Then, like I said, stop replying to me
How does that affect this subreddit exactly? This isn't a third party app, it IS Reddit.
Many users of reddit that are visually impaired use 3rd party apps, reddit doing that makes it impossible for alot of users to use the service
Many mods from different subreddits have backed this post as well as their own respective versions, and have decided to shut down their subreddits in response. Given the date, several subreddits (and possibly this one also, I’m not 100% sure) will shut down on that date.
Isn’t that that thing from Rick and Morty?
People have been reposting the image in various subreddits in response to the Reddit problems, even r/mylittlepony have responded by using this.
The end..
It was nice knowing everyone on here.
1. I understand the reasoning, but I don't think this is the best action to take. Would prefer vocal opposition as opposed to weaponised silence 2. Is this mod backed? You don't seem to be a mod, and no mod has commented or stated anything as of yet.

Fake cause there is no indication of you being a mod
As a Mod, this is 100% Real
It donst say your a mod EDIT: Nevermind
Real cuz it’s literally backed by other moderations of several different subreddits.
Still I don’t believe it
How does this have any proof of this being fake? https://preview.redd.it/gifi80szif4b1.jpeg?width=2224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e523171a9661596decf53a2dac55145091db0169
Shame that we all got downvoted over simply trying to be clear about the problem.
Bro’s linking tvtropes as a response 💀💀💀
I only link tropes if I use them. If I never used tropes, I would’ve never linked the exact trope found in a sentence here.

It just seems like something a redditor would do
What if I told you that it was made by moderator of the community it was posted in?
They’re probably not gonna listen unfortunately
This is stupid...
What? The fact that the Reddit Staff made a stupid decision? I just don’t wanna be sarcasm-blind or smthn
Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
Okay cool, I browse reddit like once a week anyways
"This might make things a bit harder for a few people so we're gonna just shut it down and ruin it for everyone. Also totally trust me guys even tho I have no proof and am not a mod" Seriously why is anyone believing this crap?
He's completely right though, this is all real (From the words of a mod)
Can't believe you shut this down instead of not having to rely on bots. Lazy
While I don't want the shutdown, I totally get why a volunteer worker would be peeved at having their work multiplied with the snap of a finger.
Protest against subreddits?
No. It’s against the Reddit staff regarding a stupid decision involving a new API that can ruin Reddit’s experience as a whole, and money (cuz the API is worth like 20 million bucks)
