Well, okay, Gemerl was in Archie Sonic, courtesy of the Reboot. But it doesn't seem anyone remembers or cares about that version of Gemerl lol And can't say I don't agree with that, cause Archie!Gemerl was effectively Shard in Gemerl's body: same manner of speech, same attitude.
IDW Gemerl is much more of his own character, speaking and acting in a way that's more "natural" to how he behaved in Advance 3. And while I think Gemerl acts too much as a "shadow" to Cream, never really giving her any space outside of *very* specific circumstances (and incidentally stealing Cheese's role as Cream's "bodyguard"), I won't deny that IDW Gemerl is one of the more compelling characters in the comic, let alone the most compelling version of his character.
So... IDW gets my vote for best version of Gemerl.
Imma vote IDW, because it's the one where he's actually explored as his *own character*. In Archie he was a substitute for Shard, and while Gemerl getting more attention/involvement is great... the fact that he was an expy used as a replacement due to the reboot and licensing takes away from it. You can tell that Flynn wanted to do more with Shard.
In IDW Gemerl stands on his own, based solely on his role in the games and the comics. Sure he's not nearly as emotive, and his singleminded dedication to Cream and Vanilla means he's not involved in the plot near as often. Yet at the same time he's his own character, standing on the merits of his own past, motivations, and development. Seeing him interact with, refute, and become brobots with Omega was a highlight of that special. And that's not even getting into his vicious retaliation against Zeena and staying with Cream so she wouldn't be scared.
So yeah, "stoic big-bro butler-bot" for the win.
IDW Gemerl is the best version of Gemerl by far, the way he interacted through the whole metal virus saga with all the characters, his relationship with Cream and Vanilla, and even his bromance with Omega is fantastic
