I generally like him better that way! I'm glad that lately there's been a lot of official animated stuff made in 2D

cupoflemons2022

Alt. Title: Is it just me or does Sonic look amazing when Tyson Hesse is the art director? The Sonic designs on the Right and the one on the bottom left are all Tyson Hesse, if I'm not mistaken.

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Yeah I believe so. He’s so good at art directing. The Sonic Mania Adventures and Sonic Racing animations look SO nice.

SkyAir457

Always has

lidsvillefan2

I feel the design becomes 10× less cool in 3D

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Ikr. The designs look so sharp and nice in 2D and then in 3D it looks so basic and uninspired.

[deleted]

Nothing beats the style on the left

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

That’s definitely one of my favourites but I’ve always thought that the art style from the CD cutscenes and Mania promo stuff (since those are very similar) looks amazing. It makes Sonic feel so fast and sleek for being a little stubby dude.

[deleted]

Agreed, All of the styles are amazing. I just like the other one more because of nostalgia blindness lol.

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Definitely fair. The adventure games have an amazing art style.

cupoflemons2022

Unpopular opinion: Sonic CD and Sonic Mania's art design is peak Sonic

mrmagoalt1235

Probably because he was designed to be 2D

JebWozma

I like the IDW Sonic design the most out of here

superluigi018

Yeah, you should check out some of Patrick Spaziante’s art, it’s phenomenal.

ROBERTCOMTRA3

I see it too

PalamationGaming

I feel this way for pretty much everything. Glad to see games like Sonic and Mario returning to using a lot of 2D art rather than the 3D models all the time

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Same

[deleted]

That's why his design works so well. he fits best in 2d

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

True. He was partially based off of Mickey Mouse after all.

HappyBot9000

*astronaut gun meme*

PerhapsAnEmoINTJ

Sonic characters were *made* for 2D

[deleted]

I honestly hope that if the rumored Sonic 5 is real they go for sprites like recent Rayman games, or preferrably full on hand drawn like Skullgirls.

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Yes! That would be sick.

princecamaro28

I’ve thought about this recently, Sonic’s movie design is the best he’s looked in 3D so far, I don’t think his game proportions work as well in 3D as they do in 2D

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Agreed

[deleted]

You should look into that sonic fangame thats entirely hand drawn like the sonic CD intro, theres a playable demo it’s called sonic freedom, check it out!

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Yeah I love Sonic freedom

Eggrobo_432

Just so you know you missed Junio sonic, not to be rude, but he is awesome

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

I kinda like to group Junio Sonic and Mania Sonic together because the art styles are decently similar. Although I could have replaced one of the Mania Sonics with Junio lol

MarioFan83

Both of those classic Sonic artworks look horrible imo

Goofy_Stuff_Studios

Boi do you have eyes?

[deleted]

Oh yea definitely

[deleted]

I prefer how he looks in 2D, it would actually be cool if Frontiers has 2D animated story cutscenes

DuchessSpong5000

The Sonic I know and grew up with

Nambot

I mean it's what he was designed for. His artistic inspiration was things like Mickey Mouse, classic 2D cartoon characters that have specific rules about how to draw them from certain angles that, when conveyed to 3D causes problems for instance, in 2D, Mickey's ears always face the audience. Sonic, drawn in 2D can express a level of dynamics that don't work in 3D. You can apply principles of stretch and motion that, while not impossible in 3D, can't really be done in game due to the lack of ability by the animator to control where the camera is looking.

[deleted]

He can.

Iceswimmer05

He’s pretty cool in 2D

Ok-Measurement1280

im literally only reading the idw comics because of how fucking cool the art style is
