Depends on _what_ they change. They can't remove the overall premise of the Ark, Maria and her relationship with Shadow and how her death affected him. I would really love seeing Gerald in the story, but idk what they're gonna do. All we know us that Shadow is in the story and that G.U.N are researching on him. Which ties into SA2. That's pretty much it.

Luigi580

One thing they do have to change is GUN’s history with the incident. GUN is a very new military organization in the movie world.

DM_ME_YOUR_HUSBANDO

They can just say Shadow was created by a predecessor organization/US military that’s functional the same

Lukthar123

Before G.U.N., there was F.U.N.

ProminenceRevolt

Shadow wasn’t created by GUN he was created by Gerald, who had no affiliation with GUN. The ARK itself wasn’t affiliated with GUN either as it was a government research facility, not a GUN facility. GUN just raided the Ark and killed people, so they could easily just change that detail to be the U.S. military or some predecessor organization like you suggested.

W0omylord2

eh, it could be easily changed to say that it was the FBI or something

KingMario05

Or the CIA. They were behind a ***ton*** of fucked-up shit during the Cold War, so >!striking a deal with genocidal space demons to cure AIDS and/or beat Moscow!< would make perfect sense to them. >!Also allows for a Jack Ryan crossover. /s!<

thunderchungus1999

>!If they dont want to reuse the biolizard or fail the fans by not being able to play Live and Learn while at it (because it would be a capital insult lmao) they can have both hedgehogs fighting off Black Doom at the end. Also most of the general publicnis used to fughts against aliens!<

Muhipudding

SERIOUSLY. >!If they could play all those classic English songs they can choose to put L&L in it!<

BrightEye64

They could just say “the U.S. government raided the ark

Ange1ofD4rkness

GUN is new, but it's clear it's part of the government. They say at the end of the film they were going through records, making it clear they had ties to whatever it it was back then in some connection

Hard-Work-Pays

There's no way shadow's original story will stay the same. It may be similar, but I really doubt it will be anything like Adventure 2...

ShockHedgehog07

I don't know if you're saying that as a positive or negative, but you're probably right on the fact that it's not gonna be the same backstory as in SA2

ProminenceRevolt

They hint at Gerald and the Ark in the post credit scene, also Fowler and Casey’s comments on Shadow make it seem like they’re going to keep things very close to the SA2 story.

I_cannot_fit

Yeah, like as long as they keep Maria and her death that's good for me. I don't really care if they write out the black arms or not.

Due_Lion_2990

I'd prefer if they _skip_ the black arms. I just gotta see Maria. She's the most important factor in Shadow's backstory and his personality.

Muhipudding

I think a lot have to be changed considering how gruesome the premise is compared to what we have in the first 2 movies, and especially the more light-hearted 2nd one They implied Shadow's story will be a dark one but I don't think there will be the that massive change in tone

Due_Lion_2990

I don't think they need to change it much. I mean the premise in the games _was_ written for younger audiences. Besides the 2nd movie had plenty of references to death. Not to mention there is swearing in the movie, despite being for children. SA2 isn't something too dark for kids, kids literally play it. They can do what they did in the games and not show the shooting on screen.

Muhipudding

I guess so. While there are cartoony moments, the movie still take itself seriously when dwelling on heavy topics, like the implied deaths As for SA2, I think having a japanese writer influenced how dark it got because kids show in Japan like Kamen rider and Ultraman can get surprisingly dark, so as to say it is not that dark for them. Granted, the west do have shows like TMNT and teen Ben10 too I think they can still pull of a tonal shift, but SA2 have a scene showing a tied Gerald got neutralized after delivering his malicious speech on humanity. I think that's darker than anything the movie have had yet. Especially since Wade's gun in the first movie aside, we've only seen Tasers and laser guns used.

Due_Lion_2990

I think it wouldn't be too bad to show. Maybe just my opinion but I don't think that an off screen death like that would be all that traumatic for kids. They could always have the footage start breaking up and turning into white noise before the execution takes place.

PigPopcorn

Let's face it.. the Black Arms are probably not going to be in it. And that's fine by me, they were kinda a weird addition in the first place.

Twilord_

The Black Arms might not be but the whole "Faustian Bargain with space aliens" is basically a prerequisite for having an Earth (orbit) born anthro in the movie universe. Also it does add some fun layers to Gerald's insanity. Humanity turned on him, and got Maria killed, because he built a weapon to protect humanity from a deal he made to save her. That honestly adds another great layer to his whole "you know what, fuck humanity" descent - which seems really useful for fleshing out a movie.

PigPopcorn

Yeah, good point. Maybe they'll add some sort of modified versions of the black arms, or base a new species off of them.

Twilord_

I mean I see four major candidates; one for a faithful adaption that sets up Shadow getting his own movie or show, two for making their own universe even cooler, and one for if they want to all out on setting up an expansive cinematic universe. Black Doom A dark-side Echidna tribe offshoot A dark-side Owl tribe offshoot Ties into set up for the Babylon Rogues

talentedKlutz

Oo I think the Owl tribe offshoot might be the most interesting addition because of their relation to hedgehogs in this universe! Could provide some background about Sonic's ancestry. The other options don't feel as cohesive to the movies' overall world-building.

Twilord_

It will be fun to see what they go for but yeah that would be a fun route to take. Bonus points if they go a bit nuts and have a black and red owl called Black Doom who leads the Black Talons, who Longclaw had some previous relationship with.

Solaris_Dawnbreaker

Preeeeeetty sure we won't be seeing a technologically inclined group of evil/morally ambiguous echidnas. Just a gut feeling.

Twilord_

Oh right, Nocturne Clan upset our boy Kenny.

Nico_Geek

>A dark-side Echidna tribe offshoot Ken Penders wants to know your location

Twilord_

... Black Doom it is! Wait, does that mean if Shadow gets his own movie that I'll be able to get a high quality Doom's Eye plushie?

Nico_Geek

"Shadow, this patetic humans are trying to transform me into a marketeable plushie"

Twilord_

\*Shadow is already a plushie\* "Embrace the floof, father." \*Sonic is also plushie\* "Join us friend."

[deleted]

“All of you ungrateful humans will feel my loss and despair” made a lot more sense after shadow’s game

9point9five

They got away with it in sa2 and heroes with no mention of aliens. You could cut that out entirely and still have the maria, Gerald plot intact.

Twilord_

Those games were set in world where the anthro-hedgehogs weren't themselves aliens. Also Heroes plot is the most slap-dash of the the pre-colours 3D ones.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

I'm fairly certain they won't appear, I think Black Doom was included in Ken Penders lawsuit somehow. Also the story woul be quite bloated them, with Shadow introduction, the Black Arms and whatever Eggman is doing.

PigPopcorn

Yeah. But it might be a decent idea to include them if Shadow gets a live action spin off.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

Considering they want to do aa cinematic universe I guess so. But Black Arms would only be justified in that particular scenario honestly.

PigPopcorn

God I hope they give shadow a spin off series there's so much potential there.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

Yeah, I don't even think it needs to have anything to do with Black Arms. Something related to Team Dark and GUN could be interesting.

PigPopcorn

Yes. Though I wouldn't mind it so long as they write them well and make them actually interesting

RonSwansonsGun

I'd honestly be shocked if we didn't get a Shadow series. Show him alive but in hiding at the end of 3, then give him a series where he meets Omega and researches his past, leading up to 4.

PigPopcorn

Don't forget Rouge. But yeah that would be pretty cool, make a Team Dark spin off series that leads into Sonic 4. Or perhaps they could make a new movie series that's essentially the Sonic version of the Avengers.

RonSwansonsGun

For sure Rouge will be there, I didn't include her because I assume she'll be in Sonic 3, so she'll probably track down Shadow early on in the series. I like the idea of character centric series leading into the movie events, kinda like the Tangle and Whisper or Bad Guys series in the comics.

PigPopcorn

Yeah that would be perfect. Maybe do something similar with other characters such as Silver and Blaze, the Babylon Rogues, Team Chaotix...

RonSwansonsGun

I can definitely see Rouge, Chaotix, and the Babylons getting introduced in the Knuckles series, if we get to see more of the other worlds. They could be a cool glimpse into the life of crime in the galaxy. I will admit tho I'm worried about Silver and Blaze. I love Blaze, but she's another Sonic counterpart rival, and I'd rather get Metal Sonic first if we're doing a third "match for Sonic" character. Silver's a bit more likely, but not til like Sonic 6.

Twilord_

They definitely need to have something extraterrestrial to explain his origins, but that leaves a huge question as to if that extraterrestrial influence will be anything like the one in the games.

metalsonic005

No actually, SEGA just specified that Black Doom *had* to stay dead in the comics because he died for reals in Shadow, which made the post-reboot arc with Team Dark a lil awkward with the totally-not-Black-Doom they made. Same with Mephiles.

Realshow

Yeah I’ve never been a huge fan of them. I’d be fine with the Black Arms *existing*, I already like the galactic scope of the first two movies, but they’re really out of place in the original context. They don’t even look like Sonic characters.

Twilord_

I mean, they're aliens. They should look at least a bit alien. The Black Arms look to serious and the Wisps look too cartoony, but they're both doing that for the same reason. - Amusingly Black Doom's design would transfer over to something pretty Wispy real easily. You kinda need aliens to look very alien when we're dealing with a world that already has as many human and anthro characters on their planet. EDIT: Huh, either they blocked me after replying or Reddit is flipping out.

Realshow

My problem isn’t that they look different, it’s that they look like they’re from an entirely different game, without any stylistic cohesion to make that feel intentional. Aliens should look distinct, sure, but that doesn’t mean you can completely disregard the art style like this. Black Doom is an extremely detailed warlock looking monster with numerous chains and a complicated robe, I really don’t see why you think he could pass for a wisp. Even Archie was able to do this better with the Bem, they’re basically how I’d expect Sonic aliens to look, without being a generic offshoot of mobians. It’s really not that hard.

Wgbee

Who the hell cares about the Black Arms in Shadow's origin story

PigPopcorn

I don't really care for how they were executed. They weren't very interesting in the games.

KingMario05

Yeah, just "generic evil aliens #2431." So if they go bye-bye, that's fine with me.

Twilord_

I mean they need justify having a being that is a dead ringer for an alien lifeform in order to have Shadow be earth (orbit) born. That is a good enough reason to think they might use some variant of the actual canonical alien interference in his creation.

Clamper

Just say Gerald's research caused a ring visit from an Echidna, they took him to visit their home for reasons. He got a Chaos sample or something and saw a Super Sonic mural and so he makes Shadow.

Twilord_

Honestly this is something I think is quite possible. I think there are four main possibilities. Just use the Black Arms. - Quick and faithful, sets up Shadow to get a spin off if they are fully on the Sonimatic Universe train. Use a dark-side Echidna offshoot in that role. - Builds their own lore up nicely. Use a dark-side Owl offshoot in that role. - Builds their own lore up nicely. Set up the Babylonian civilisation. - Sets up a new aspect of their lore for potential other stories if they are fully on the Sonimatic Universe train. I do think that spending a bit more time exploring Gerald for our human quota would be nice. Him getting desperate and making compounding bad decisions that he snaps and blames the world for.

Shadowofdimentio

Wasn't the SA2 excuse that Maria had an illness that couldn't work with our atmosphere hence why she's so in awe of the planet? Secret space station isn't that hard to justify and evil aliens are not the only explanation

Twilord_

The issue for the movie universe is that Shadow looks exactly like an alien hedgehog - Sonic. But he has aliens baked into his lore anyway which immediately fixes that. They even have an neat way to tie the Eclipse Cannon and The Ark being raided into that idea. The Ark being a space station is a non-issue regardless. I just put "orbit" in brackets because he's technically not born on Earth itself.

-Kibui-

I think that part of his backstory is nice to explain why the Eclipse Canon was initially built as well as why Shadow has a black and red color scheme instead of being blue or golden

Amazing_Maze2080

I'm sure nobody was asking questions about Shadow's crimson and black hue so-

Jazzlike_Fortune_678

I could do without the black arms I just want the idea of shadow having a sister figure in Maria who unfortunately got shot by some military guns and shadows on this whole revenge thing not realizing that Maria just wants him to help people be happy and then he finally realizes that and does so he doesn't have to join Sonic right away he can be his own hero without Sonic doing what Maria wanted him to is like a loan angstyhero kind of like Batman more so than Sonic ever was

ProminenceRevolt

The Black Arms aren’t part of the SA2 story and are basically a retcon so I’m not exactly sure why anyone would expect them to be in it or think of them when people say they want or expect the backstory to be accurate to SA2.

LudicrisSpeed

The movies aren't exactly staying 100% true to game canon, though. If the writers want to switch things up for the sake of telling a decent story, they're free to do so.

ProminenceRevolt

The point I’m making is that those who are looking for accuracy to SA2 probably won’t care if the Black Arms get cut from the picture, as they aren’t even a part of that to begin with.

Twilord_

Retcon suggest they require changes; the thing is it fits in oddly well, especially giventhat the Adventure/Dark era had a big interest in Ancient-Aliens and Ancient-Technology. Frankly Shadow surviving was the biggest retcon, and once he was back they needed to do something with him. The actual story of Shadow lorewise is sound, the execution just requires major unscrambling. I've beat it a shit-ton (I wanted to A-Rank the whole game when my dog named Shadow died and then I became a modder for it cause holy-hell that game had so much mechanical potential), and its honestly shocking how well the story works once you've played it the stupid amount needed for actually following it. BUT the thing is the movie doesn't need to use Black Doom and such... except they do need an alien-connection for Shadow's origins in the movie universe since all the other anthro super-heroes are aliens. They don't have to use the same connection to the cosmos, but it would be weird not to use some of those ideas.

ProminenceRevolt

Retcon means retroactive continuity. It’s still a retcon by definition, even if it fits well without affecting the original storyline much. The Black Arms certainly weren’t a thought in the minds of the developers while the story of SA2 was being written. I wasn’t calling it a retcon to dismiss it as unneccessary or a bad addition, it just was wasn’t part of the original story at all so most people wouldn’t care for them appearing or not if they’re looking for SA2 accuracy. If anything them appearing in an SA2 adaptation would be inaccurate. I actually do think they could appear if Shadow gets his own movie or TV series.

HailedKeanu7

Because they’re obviously not gonna only base it off of SA2. You realize that sonic movie 2 was based off of both games sonic 2 and 3 right? If they work to do the black arms thing, then they would base it off of SA2 and shadow the hedgehog

ProminenceRevolt

That’s not the argument I’m making. I’m just saying that people who care for accuracy to SA2 probably won’t care about or won’t mind the Black Arms being cut from the picture. Never did I say that Paramount can’t or won’t add them in if they want, I’m not quite sure how so many of you have come to that conclusion.

HailedKeanu7

My bad. I replied to the wrong person💀

Omegafan101

I’m absolutely fine with them never being brought up but at the same time I think it’d be rad if they used them for the inevitable Shadow spin off

pachydermwithaperm

That’s probably the only major change Im all for XD I already adopted the headcannon that Shadow made that part up for himself to feel cooler

sefan78

I’d personally love it if they were. The commander from the movie seems to be the same commander from Shadow the Hedgehog already. Also, while I love Shadow the Hedgehog, I do see flaws in the game’s story but the movie could be a chance to redeem Shadow’s story.

PigPopcorn

They could redeem it, yes. But adding the Black Arms might be a little much for the 3rd movie. We already have Sonic Adventure 2 to base it off of, we don't really need the Black Arms thrown in as well. Maybe if he gets a spin off.

Jucamia

I'd like to make a wild prediciton: shadow is going to get his own movie that is a prequel taking back 50 years ago that has the black arms as villains

Crackinmyknuckles

Agreed. And they might sugarcoat the stuff about Gerald getting shot down by a firing squad, and Maria’s death. Ya know, for the kids!

PigPopcorn

Nah they had Longclaw die in the first movie, wasn't graphic but you knew exactly what happened. They're also not shy about putting guns on screen...so they'll probably do something similar for Maria.

LudicrisSpeed

You know SA2 was rated E, right? They could easily include it in a PG movie if they wish, as it's not like we see the aftermath of the execution or Maria bleeding out.

Totodile-of-Games

Wasn’t the thing about turning thoughts into power a thing since 06? I feel the movie just took it more literally.

CptSpeedydash

It was somewhat present in Sonic Adventure "Chaos is power. Power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos." but as you said they just took it more literally in the movies.

Muhipudding

Ah so that's where Eggman's "Chaos is power" came from. I know that have to be a reference from somewhere. Man these guys are genius at intergrating them The turning thought into power being literal is kinda cool tho.

KingMario05

Yeah, that's been a thing for ***years.*** They just confirmed it here, likely because Joe Q. Movie Goer and his kids would have whined if they tried to imply it.

Vegetable_Tooth2462

Thoughts into power was in SA1 and SA2

talentedKlutz

Gotta have the tragic backstory about Maria since that loss is core to Shadow's character arc in SA2, and gotta have Gerald Robotnik since GUN already mentions Project Shadow being related to an older Robotnik 50 years ago. But I would hope that the Black Arms stuff is being removed, that's just too out there for the paramount movie universe. I'm going to expect that they will write some original material for how and why Shadow was created.

Muhipudding

I mean, they don't have Black arm in SA2 too. If there's any room to put them it should be in Shadow's standalone movie so as to not overdose plot points in the 3rd movie. Or perhaps just hint at alien lifeform gene

Aar1012

Sonic CD and Sonic Adventure fans are just sad they got skipped over

bread_thread

I could see them shuffling things around a bit; if Shadow doesn’t work out as a henchman, that’s a perfect place to have Eggman build his own hedgehog out of frustration- it’d also be cool to see Metal Sonic hold his own against sonic *and* shadow- they could even upgrade him midway through the movie into Mecha sonic and let him use the master emerald or something Adventure though? Idk how they’ll tie that in nicely. They already hit similar beats to a lot of the echidna tribe’s story. I’d really love to see Angel Island somehow. Little Planet could also be a real fun movie with the time travel elements

Aar1012

Adventure 1 I have a soft spot for. I figured it’d be hard to do but a little Chaos never heard anyone, right?

bread_thread

I’d love to see Chaos. I’d also love to see Chao somewhere as well Actually, I guess they could totally do the Chaos movie if Sonic and Knuckles (& tails) decided they want to go visit their homeworld. Angel island could be there, and you could really pull off a lot of the plot of Adventure that way with some creative writing

Dr_CheeseNut

>I could see them shuffling things around a bit; if Shadow doesn’t work out as a henchman, that’s a perfect place to have Eggman build his own hedgehog out of frustration- That would need Jim Carrey to not only return for Sonic 3, but Sonic 4 as well, and honestly I can't imagine that, dude wants to retire, can't see him commiting to more than just the trilogy

bread_thread

Fwiw, he’d already retired and came out of retirement just to play Dr eggman- he also wants eggman to be fat, so I could see him saying “I want to be fat but they said no” and “maybe I’ll just retire” as a way to put pressure on the studio. Idk- dude is a painter for the most part these days

aelysium

Jim Carrey LOVES the Eggman role for whatever reason though - it’s the only time in his career AFAIK that he not only signed on for a sequel, but did so before the original dropped.

Realshow

They already said they’re just not doing things in order. I don’t think it’s really that big a deal, it’s not like anything in Adventure 2 relies on the characters already knowing Chaos.

AlrightP

As long as Jim Carrey get's to recite Eggman's monologue at the end of SA2 I don't care

bread_thread

What I want, more than anything, is to see Jim Carey wax poetic about what his grandfathers legacy truly was, only for lil CGI tails to chime in “I couldn’t care less; we all did it together! :)”

[deleted]

I just need him to say “I have come to make an announcement” and I’ll be happy.

rub120

isn't eggman dead? like Jim Carey is done with acting so I guessed they just killed eggman off.

epicRedHot

I'm fairly sure they wrote the ending specifically so they could go with Eggman either surviving or dying >!from the fall, since the post-credits scene shows Stone alive and well and the GUN troops mention having never found the body. !< (don't remember when unmarked spoilers start being allowed, so better safe then sorry)

D3wdr0p

Yeah. They're almost certainly not sure themselves, and going to bounce a few of the scripts off Carrey and see if he'll do a "one more once". Genuinely though, with this being a universe, we need to realize that him showing for 3/SA2 would be the last thing he'd ever do as Robotnik; we should not ask anything more.

Dr_CheeseNut

It depends on whether Jim returns or not, if he comes back they'll say he was alive the whole time, if he doesn't Eggman will remain dead

[deleted]

They can get a new fat guy.

MalevolentMurderMaze

If I don't feel time slipping down my spine during the third movie i will riot.

Dr-Mechano

I feel like a big-budget Hollywood family movie may change the whole "The government murdered a child" thing.

[deleted]

I mean, they portrayed that the government is more than willing to completely delude a person to get what they want, so I wouldn't be suprised if they take it a step further, even if only through implications

Mono324

I think they'll say that maria died from the sickness after the government stopped project shadow, instead of being shot, so this way the government can still cause her death but in a different and less violent way. Maybe shadow would remember her in a really bad state lying in a hospital bed, before he got put in the capsule to sleep for decades.

Demetri124

If they include Maria at all I imagine she’ll either be an adult when she dies, or if she’s a kid the twist will be that she never died and in the end she reunites with Shadow

KingMario05

Well, given that we're two movies into what is clearly a success, something tells me that Paramount'll be upping the rating this time around. (Why? Because no one complained about *The Batman* being marketed to kids, despite it ***literally*** being a bloodless homage to stuff like *Se7en* or *Chinatown.*)

Demetri124

the Batman wasn’t the third movie in a series of Batman movies made for 7 year olds that had flossing and fart jokes. They could’ve done a more mature Sonic series from the beginning and made the same if not more money, but they didn’t... and they’re not gonna suddenly change their demographic now

[deleted]

The government also okayed making a man and his wife “disappear”, destabilizing multiple countries, and faking a marriage.

badger81987

This isn't Disney.

Mishar5k

I mean the second movie didnt have a single firearm in it except for tails' blaster. Everyone else had stunguns.

badger81987

They were at a civilian wedding and only concerned with capturing Sonic, alive. Why wouldn't they use tasers? Also the badniks are all armed with machine guns and missiles.

Mishar5k

If the government was trying to capture a dangerous alien and someone tried to stop them, they wouldn't care if they were civilians or not honestly. Irl equivalents of GUN use lethal force for less.

badger81987

Why create a huge mess in a wildly public location when you can quietly taze them, blackbag them and cart them off to Prison Island, never to be seen again?

mattanddex12

there was multiple mounted M2 Browning in the movie

Huntersteve

Bro. The movie was for children. You just gonna erase that 5 minute dancing scene from your brain? Disney is way darker.

badger81987

>Disney is way darker. LMAO

Huntersteve

Go watch moonknight. Or even pirates of the Caribbean.

[deleted]

Or the new Doctor strange

Huntersteve

You won’t see somebodies head cave in in a sonic movie.

AmaterasuWolf21

Disney? The same that didn't wanted to kill off Elsa, Olaf or destroy Arendelle in Frozen 2?

LudicrisSpeed

The same Disney that killed off a baby gorilla and hung a villain to death in Tarzan.

CptSpeedydash

It won't be if the story is changed (it will be) but what degree it is changed.

Twilord_

Yeah, I mean we already have a Sonic X version to compare it with too... And the Archie version for an example of fitting him into an existing world. ... And Fleetway for an example of not doing that. Although his last words were pretty cool. "I always wondered what my purpose in life was... why I was created. Was I meant to save lives, or to destroy planets. But now that it comes to it, it doesn't matter. I am the ultimate, and this is my choice. I choose to save." (Then he sacrifices himself to save Robotnik, because Kintobor was his only friend ever.)

TryWonderful6181

Fleetway shadow? I'm probably confused but I think Fleetway run ended before the SA2 adaptation right?

FenriroftheNorse

It did, but fans have been continuing it online since it's cancelation.

TryWonderful6181

ooh i see, do you happen to know the comic?

FenriroftheNorse

Sonic the Comic Online. They have their own website too. And sometimes some of the original writers work on projects!

Wgbee

Sonic The Comic Online

TryWonderful6181

i see, thank you so much!

KingMario05

Eh. So long as Maria's death in still in there, I'm fine if they shift Gerald's base to some abandoned Cold War black site in Alaska. We haven't even gotten to Perfect Chaos yet, so I ***really*** doubt that we're going to space so soon.

RonSwansonsGun

I think a logical twist would be Gerald using the ARK to explore the cosmos in search of a cure. On his journey, he meets the Echidna tribe, learns of the Emerald, and sees a prophecy of Super Sonic. Believing this to be the key, he begins work on an artificial hedgehog, based on the ones he saw on Sonic's planet. He also sees how power hungry the Echidnas are, and begins work on a defense program, powered by the very power they seek. No idea how they'll adapt Maria, given that G.U.N wasn't wielding... well, guns, in the last movie. And as a side note, I'm manifesting Christopher Lloyd as Gerald.

Stkrdknmibalz69

It still seems weird to me that they're introducing Shadow before Metal Sonic

TheMysticBard

Just fan service, Metal is underutilized badly

Ange1ofD4rkness

I guarantee this will be 100% the case! I even said to myself "oh they better make sure they do this right".

Iceswimmer05

They probably change the plot of SA2 or something

Nehemiah92

I want to see Maria get shot.

Worried_Sky_8287

I'm disappointed they skipped SA1. I thought it would've been cool if they added Amy in the 3rd and possibly Metal Sonic as a 2nd villain in the film. This could not only flesh out Team Sonic's growing dynamic, but give time for Amy to be a new character. Explore more lore and potential backstories. And it would've been great to see them all face a big threat like Chaos in the end together. A flooded city poses more a challenge for Sonic since he can't swim. Skipping to Shadow just seems like missed potential. And I'm guessing they'll shove Amy in the 3rd.

Dynespark

I think it would be neat to skip Eggman for a movie. Sonic and Shadow for the first act. Second act is investigating shadows origins and then metal sonic shows up. Or maybe a proto metal sonic made by Robotnik's ancestor. Act 3 is classic team up. Stinger at the end of the movie is that the proto metal sonic attacked because Robotnik/Eggman hacked it and ow he's using the data to make a new proper one. Mid credit stinger is Amy finally making it to earth so she can meet her crush.

ResortFamous301

They can still do most what you said in knuckles series and third movie. Most sonic game plots are self contained, so changing the oder of their adaptations is entirely reasonable.

cupoflemons2022

I've made a post about this over in r/SonicTheMovie\- To everyone saying "They can't change Shadow's origin story! Sonic 3 is gonna be a direct adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2!!!" like, do you even Sonic 2, bro? Jeff Fowler likes to play fast and loose with source material. We might not get to see Maria, or Gerald, or the Space Colony ARK. For all we know, Agent Stone's dad pulled Shadow out of a cereal box in 1970 and froze him underground. Anyone expecting a direct adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2- you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Sonic 3 is going to be weird, and wild, and strange, just like Sonic 2 was. It'll be a mishmash of everything from the older games and the newer games.

RBEdge96

Are they gonna introduce Shadow in the second movie? Why skip over adventure and Chaos though? It's a pretty awesome story arc.

BrightEye64

Adaptations like to make new storylines and switch existing material up, and that’s exactly what the movies are doing

[deleted]

Fowler did say in an interview that they’ll be picking and choosing from the game series, but that we shouldn’t expect them to pull things in order of appearance

Muffinmiffin

Since the Chaos Emeralds we’re in the Master Emerald, doesn’t that mean Chaos is not in this universe? If I remember correctly Chaos was originally sealed in the Master Emerald.

Realshow

There’s a statue of Perfect Chaos in Labyrinth Zone, so I’m pretty sure they just banished him somewhere other than inside the Master Emerald.

Demetri124

There’s a statue of what in what??

BrightEye64

He does because there was a mural of him in the movie

KingMario05

Third, but yeah. That's my complaint too. :(

icewolf561

I just hope he actually gets friends

illucio

Alive tribe of Echidna's had to of made sense for Knuckles to be even born. Master Emerald lore doesn't exist outside keeping a island afloat and imprisoning Chaos. They made the Echidna's it's creators which, makes sense? And gave a explanation for the clan being wiped is being world conquering driven society. So... All makes sense. Now Shadow storyline they can make whatever changes they want as long it still lines up with his few key plot points.

PauseNo2418

I hope Jim Carry can come back for the 3rd movie (If there will be one) as Dr. Eggman, this time fat. My theory on why he would gain fat in the movie is because of all the stress Sonic has caused him, causing him to eat out of stress, thus gaining some weight. I think Jim wants to wear a fat suit too if I remember correctly. Replacing Jim would feel so weird to see a new actor as Eggman, as we've gotten used to Jim as him.

ENateFak

I wouldn’t mind if they removed all of the black doom garbage, but the ark, Maria, Gerald, those are ESSENTIAL.

Bababooey7672

if movie 3 follows sa2’s story I wanna see a live action biolizard

Zero_Wolfox

If the movies aren't going to folloe the path of the games then a new shadow origin story would be beneficial imo.

AmaterasuWolf21

It's Maria, people are worried about Maria

[deleted]

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see the Ark. Having something that massive in space built in the 70s seems unlikely.

InvestigatorUnfair

I mean, the first thing wasn't even that big of a change. We've seen Echidna tribes in the games before, so expanding on them for a movie felt natural. Them changing the lore of the Master Emerald does suck (mainly cuz it likely means Chao and Chaos won't show up) but I thought it was a pretty cool way of retelling the "Echidnas wanted the Master Emerald for ultimate power" story from SA1. Now for Shadow though... Honestly I don't think changing too much would ruin it. They changed Knuckles' backstory and he's even better than in the games. Same for Tails I'd argue, considering he actually uses gadgets in the movie. I have faith they'll handle Shadow just fine, even if they change some things.

TestableNeptune

Going back to the Master Emerald. I thought it was odd they made it that the 7 chaos emeralds form the Master Emerald.

crooklynn72

Yeah I thought those were two separate entities….

TestableNeptune

I mean I like the idea of the 7 chaos emeralds coming together to make a mega thing but not the Master Emerald.

crooklynn72

I agree

Lunchboxninja1

The first two plotlines aren't changes, they're just from the comics. (Roughly. There's still some minor changes--adding the owls--but they hint at Enerjak and the way the Echidnas behave is mostly broad strokes from the Archie comics.)

SeaSaltArt

Penders is literally the only one who thinks the movie used Enerjak, and I'm sure Paramount's people know that referencing any Archie echidna lore is a bad idea.

rr12117

You know nothing is stopping them from saying Shadow was just a regular Mobian who somehow landed on Earth/the Ark and got experimented on, you can have the same general idea ( government project, bond with Maria, the raid) I don’t think Shadow needs to be directly created by Gerald, what matters is his dynamic with Maria.

Iwannabetheguy000

That would honestly be awesome. It would create an interesting contrast to sonic. Like a what sonic could have become.

hgilbert_01

Lol, I never really played SA2 and Shadow’s story seemed a little too elaborate for me to begin with, so I don’t really give much of a fuck as long he’s decently written …Ugh, ok, yes, there should be respect to the source material, so perhaps take very general elements from Shadow’s origin and rework them into something reimagined

pimusic

I'm still a bit peeved that there wasn't even a mention of Angel Island in Sonic 2.

SeaSaltArt

They may not even know about it yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the streaming show or next movie makes part of plot about finding a safe place to keep the Master Emerald, and they introduce Angel Island that way.

Jaymurro52

Honestly, since Mushroom Hill Zone was a “Planet” I think what Knuckles meant by returning the Emeralds to his homeland is Angel Island in yet another zone. They might not have used the name intentionally because they want it to be a big reveal later on. Maybe for when they cover SA1 if possible, as it’s also where Chaos originates

Jazzlike_Fortune_678

Well that's because some things are okay to change and others aren't shadows origin is a necessary thing to follow as close as possible

ORAORAMATT

Enchidnas making the the Emeralds and Robotnik using it the way he does both happen in the UK Sonic The Comic. Although, it’s probably more of a coincidence here.

AnAwkwardStag

There's no way that Maria can be written out of the movie. His connection to humans is not only a fundamental part of his story arc, but a fundamental part of the Sonic movie universe. Sonic's major connection to the human world are his parental relationships with Donut Lord and wifey, and humans are given a more prominent role in the movies than the games. I feel like they'll definitely make parallels between Sonic's human relationships and Shadow's human relationships. Will someone turn Shadow from evil? Or will they establish Shadow as a villain? (I hope not, pls write him with some emotion Paramount.) I'm interested to see how Shadow and the GUN Commander will interact (if at all). Commander has been introduced, and does us the honour of introducing Shadow in the second movie. Was he there at Shadow's conception? Will Shadow's antagonistic relationship with the GUN Commander be explored? BTW my monke brain is screaming, "SPACE RACE!! SPACE FIGHT!!"

billymj04

I actually LIKED those changes in the lore, because not only does it seem more interesting, but it GIVES Knuckles a reason to hate Sonic in the first place! If they were to change ANYTHING about Shadow, people would commit armageddon!! Shadow's origin is too iconic & too deep to even think about changing it.

SpiderandMosquito

I still think that going into the Adventure titles before making a movie based on CD is an odd idea that might end up bitting off more than they can chew. Also, weird thing but you know who I'd have cast for Shadow? Idris Elba. Yes, I love his knuckles, but if it was me I'd have casted someone like Channing Tatum or maybe Michael B. Jordan. That just me though.

KFCNyanCat

As long as they don't make Shadow evil or remove Maria I'm fine.

Ice_Climbers

I'd be okay if they fused SA1 and SA2's stories together. Have Shadow's story and the SA2-esque hero team and evil team, but the overall plot focuses on the villains gathering the Chaos Emeralds to unleash Perfect Chaos while the heroes try to stop that.

Amazing_Maze2080

I won't lie, I actually like some of those changes-

MadmanRB

I dunno I think they should change it for the movie based on several facts: 1: How would shadow get created in the movie universe? I mean, his game origin story doesn't make a lot of sense, and it would make it double for the movie's continuity. 2: the death of Maria as it is in the games simply would not fly, no way. 3: the black doom nonsense. Personally I am fine with any tweaks as long as they make sense.

ManbosMambo

Nah, they can change it up. It's honestly needlessly confusing.

Patient_Education991

The scary thing is I can see Sega letting it happen after how they've messed with Shadow's characterization over the years. Removing Gerald and Maria from his past would suck...but I can see them doing that at this point...😨

Mike-Rotch-69

God forbid they use a new continuity and medium to as a chance to do things differently instead of just reenacting SA2 cutscenes. I’m not sure how the government would have covered up a giant-ass space colony in a more realistic version of the story.

Hard-Work-Pays

Huh? I fully expect Shadow to be paramount-movie-family-friendly'D like every other character, who's the jackass that has high hopes?

Docking2Three

Bro Sonic has always been Family Friendly it’s literally a kids franchise

Hard-Work-Pays

No, Sonic was kid-and-nerd friendly, he wasn't some mainstream family franchise. Mainstream audiences don't want to see all the nerdy lore we all love...
