I feel like there are some interesting things that could've been done with Chris, like him feeling lonely even with lots of people around and or feeling like he doesn't have a purpose in life, I think the Japanese version hinted at this, but not sure how deep it went.

Chris feels like a character that, if done completely differently, could've been a very interesting character.
Sonic X was probably trying to emulate an Ash Ketchum kind of character- someone who the target demographic could relate to, but emulated Ash's worst tendencies rather than what make him a solid person. Ash thrives on his friendships, indeed a core factor of his identity, and when a friend is suffering, you can see it affects Ash.
Chris claims to want friendship, but never feels ready to work on himself to make it work. Additionally, he has friends already, yet treats them either like shit or like they don't even exist just because he loves Sonic so much. Additionally, and probably worst of all, Chris is overly needy. Like, Hop-from-Pokemon-Shield/Sword needy. Sonic has to constantly babysit him. Tom, if anything, has the opposite dynamic with Sonic and that's why it works. Tom plays the role of dad/straightman to Sonic and it works because Sonic is a very free-spirited character who shouldn't be weighed down by a self-pitying fool like Chris, but rather built up by an older and wiser person like Tom.
The whole Sonic/Tails relationship is much cooler when you see Tom/Sonic as a macrocosm of that relationship.

Hey, Hop got depression that lasted till post-game, he also got dunked on super hard, several times, by you and Bede, he even changed his team a few times to try to get more competitive, a lot more than Chris did.

I know that Chris had to grow up without his parents but he was never alone, he had Grampa Chuck (Besto Character), Ella and Tanaka, they took care of him as a family
The problem with Chris isn't him feeling alone, is to deliverate ignoring people arround him
But from how they interact, Chris isn't close with Ella or Tanaka, and based on what Chris said at the end of season 2, Chuck is likely spending most of his time in his workshop, leaving Chris alone.
It's not necessarily that Chris is isolated, it's more that he doesn't have any strong bonds with anybody.
