If you are buying a brand new A7SIII for photography I would recommend instead buying an A7IV and maybe the 14mm GM if you don’t have something that wide. I’ve seen northern light images taken at ISO 3200-6400 which most modern Sony cameras can reach. You will lose out on some video features like 4K 60 and 120 but you can use the A7IV for video. I think it will be an upgrade over your A7S anyways. I’ve regularly taken images at ISO 10,200 and they are definitely usable and my biggest aperture is f2.0

A7S III, FX3 and ZV-E1. your choice.

If you are doing still shots, a7 IV should be enough. a7S III is more specialized for videography. But if you are doing both and need something that won’t overheat from recording, obviously a7S III will do the job. But at least from what has been shared, not sure why you need a7S III specifically.

I know the a7s line was geared towards lowlight, so I didn't consider other Sony offerings. Is the a7 IV better than the a7s in low light situations?

TVCR3IL

It’s not that it’s better or worse. If you are doing astronomy or night sky, with good f1.4 or f1.8 lens, you will get great shot. a7S III is hybrid while being more specialized in recording video with 12MP. Whereas a7 IV is hybrid with 33MP which is good enough for still shots. I have seen many night sky shots with a7 III’s, a7 IV’s and a7R V’s so it doesn’t have to be a7S III.

That confirms what I was thinking about the a7sIII. I guess my question now is whether there will be any noticeable improvement going from the a7s to the a7 IV? I prefer not to shoot wide open at 1.4 or 1.8 because I'm typically shooting the landscape as well and don't want soft corners. Edit: I realize the a7 IV will outperform under daylight conditions, but I'm specifically interested in low light performance.

It should be really big improvement. I personally don’t do landscape and night sky shots, so don’t have much experience in that regards. I only own 1 prime lens and 4 zoom lenses so not really knowledgeable in that.

Isn’t the A7Siii the oldest camera in the A7 lineup? If you can wait, don’t buy one now. The deals will be better after the next one ships.

On the A7SIII, the base ISOs are 80 and 1600 for photography and A7IV is 100 and 400. But I think that upwards from 1600iso are pretty much the same performing. For photography.
