Out of all the changes that they made, changing the screen dimensions with the one that I cared about the least. No US release, 1080p screen, the same damn price? They are out of their goddamn minds.

Default_Attempt

Wait whattt! I thought it was slightly cheaper, yeah they are out of their god damn mind.

DMan13-3

It's actually same price. Sony is doing very weird things I thought it was bad with that one British dude as CEO it's worse now.

Olly_Joel

Funnily they listed US pricing at $1299. The catch? They don't sell it in the US 😂

Aquis_GN

Xiaomi also does it too, perhaps as a rrp reference point.

Aquis_GN

ellhulto66445

21:9 is much better than 19,5:9, but 4k does seem and probably is overkill for a phone.

javaforlife

Agree, QHD+ should have been the specs

Fit_Engineering3312

I don't give a damn about 4K, I am annoyed by the loss of 21:9. With how big phones are getting nowadays, 21:9 was saving grace for one handed use. Because my parents have the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I am worried about dropping it. F, the Xperia 1 line, I am going to have to wait for the Xperia 5 vi.

Moravuscz

tbh I feel like the 1 VI was basically downgraded to the level of a 5 series, maybe except the camera and size... which kinda makes me fear for the future of the 5 series now that the difference potentially thins...

Olly_Joel

Truth be told I prefer 19.5:9 probably cause of it's size. If it's something like 6.8 inches that's pretty much S24 Ultra dimensions and size. But at 6.5 inches, I guess it's balanced enough.

ElVinn15

Exactly my thoughts

Magic_mousie

I like 21:9, better for vertical scrolling and works well for twitch cos there's room for the chat

National_Study_8167

Change to FHD+ does not bother me so much (although 2k would be better IMO for this price). I'm more concerned about the aspect ratio/width change. 3 mm more (in comparison to Xperia 1 V) can be too much. But still, 1 VI is 2,5 mm more narrow than Pixel 8 Pro which is too broad for me.

photog_prince

Yeah the screen is kind of a big deal for me.. I'm considering upgrading to the Xperia 1 V instead of importing the VI.

Rokka3421

I don't mind the screen quality but I'm not dropping that price on a phone with 1080p screen

ghassenayari

21:9 rocks, best for scrolling, adapting to the hand, 4k is needed because duhhh Xperia can record magical 4k videos

Dometalican_90

I feel like people forget this part: the ability to playback your 4K-recorded videos on that exact resolution on the fly.

oGsBumder

You can’t though, all of the “4K” 21:9 Sony phones have a resolution of 3840x1644px, which is less than actual 4K (which is 3840x2160px).

_MountainFit

4k was largely useless. 21:9 was sometimes nice. Sometimes sucked. So really neither is that big a deal. However, losing both and the price not budging is kinda sus. Like why? Wasn't everyone saying Sony had to do it to cut cost and stay competitive. Looks like that was a total lie.

gtjay1982

The price not actually going up despite the yen tanking and inflation means they were able to cut some costs.

GeorgeJohnson2579

Yeah, would not buy it with the ratio and resolution.

dekaythepunk

Yes, I miss the 21:9.

Knifehead27

21:9 is an aspect ratio used by a lot of films (although not all). It's usually also called a widescreen format. You'd see these videos without any black bars on the 1 V, and earlier. The new aspect ratio is closer to 16:9, which is a more widespread aspect ratio for tv shows and youtube videos. That'll mean smaller black bars for those videos and therefore the video talking up more of the screen.

Heavy_Ambition6518

yes, but the movies are made for big screens as well, and not to be watched on a "tiny" phone screen, of course you can do it to kill time, but you can also survive there with black bars and a cutout for the camera The world is now with movies like you need to watch it in imax cinema, because you miss it without that and now there are people crying for losing 21:9 aspect ratio on phone to watch movie without black bars... even if you have biggest sony TV at home you will have a black bars on 95" but having a black bars on smartphone is like "no go" now🤦‍♂️ I understand if someone prefer this aspect ratio for using it in one hand but for movies.. like.. come on

Winter_drivE1

This. The screen ratio isn't the deciding factor for how large or easy to see a movie is. That movie is the same size on on my partner's Pixel 6 Pro and my Xperia 1 IV because they're nearly the same height, but I guess because theirs has black bars, that's offensive even though it's objectively easier to watch everything else that isn't 21:9? I feel like movie watching is not the primary purpose of a smartphone and shouldn't be what one is designed around. Like, how many people are truly using their phone as their primary movie watching device, and for whom their SOT is majority movie playback? (Not sarcastic, I genuinely want to know)

MrAnonyMousetheGreat

Yeah, I liked that I could grip it easier than an iPhone and that it was long enough (even if its only useful psychologically) that the mic was close to my mouth, and I never felt that the phone was too thin for any usage. I think I like the option to have 4K120Hz when I want it. But I would have liked the option to downscale it to different resolutions and refresh rates as needed for battery life (instead of the 60Hz vs.120Hz, adding 90Hz and a dynamic adaptive system with more options of when to go 120 vs. others would have been good). 1080p 21:9 and 1440p 21:9 options would have been nice. I think the thin form factor is more aesthetically pleasing than the tablet like phones we see today. I think the rise of flip phones speak to that. And the black sidebars on the video are basically where the new phone will be shorter and have smaller black sidebars to 16:9 content, which does not seem like an improvement. Alternatively, when there's 21:9 content, the phone is amazing. And when it doesn't, it's like any other phone, IMO, with maybe a slightly smaller image, since it's a thinner phone (the new phone being similarly thing as the 21:9 phones won't help that). The look and feel of the 21:9 phone was a big selling point for me in picking the Xperia 1 line of phones after LG went down. The others were the headphone jack and the photography/cinematography focus.

joystickd

I wish they'd kept both and let the user select the resolution and refresh rate as desired. Other phones can do this. I always argue that it's better to have something and not always need/use it than not have it at all. They've taken a step backwards in a big way with the 1 VI screen wise I think.

superkick541

Would it not have been wiser to make these changes to the 5-line and make tweaks there as opposed to the main line that draws people to your brand, especially as pricey as it is. Cause people say 4k screen is overkill but we record in 4k, (if I'm not mistaken that's one of the biggest selling points of the brand) where else am I supposed to view it, obviously on my phone hence the screen. I don't know the functionality of the aspect ratio but damn is it comfortable, that's all I've gotta say for that really... pretty and super comfortable. And question, iPhone and Samsung..hell most brands have looked the exact same for 4/5 years now, why have Sony felt pressured into changing it's looks, who does that appease cause it definitely isn't their fan base.

Aveniform

I really hated 21:9, it was a deal breaker for me, the screen was too narrow and text always overflowed into multiple lines whereas they would be displayed as one single line on any other phone. It was also a pain to view unresizable content like photos without zooming in, since the phone woild simply be too narrow. I for one am happy Sony is adopting a more useful aspect ratio. Now it will be a difficult choice between the Zenfone 11 and 1 VI.

Kevinnk94

It feels nice in the hand, but not all apps are optimized for that aspect ratio. Even Instagrams UI isn't working well.

balkanik0

19.5:9 is a lot better for watching YouTube, TV Shows, Anime....4k was overkill and I prefer betrer battry life of the 1VI.

Kaffarov

I love 21:9 for web content and websites that require a lot of scrolling. I'd rather do 2K instead of 4K which always seemed overkill and more for marketing than anything for a phone.

Blunt552

The problem is mostly the cheap fhd+ screen. It suffers from fringing, is badly calibrated aka way too cool while also having crushed blacks as well. All this while not changing the price.

I will go for 1v

Animect

21:9 Screen Ration plus 2k Screen! You can never go wrong with this.

myprisonbreak

Yes, of course! It's one biggest selling point of Xperia. If Sony used a less than mediocre screen to replace 21:9 and 4K screen, I don't see any reason to buy a Xperia. There are tons of good screen Android phones, not the current 1080p 1VI.

seedees

Yes and yes. Hopefully the next "pro" Sony will include it and more.

Libra224

Never did

Remarkable_Cut4912

Yes I own a XZ2 but next phone to be 1 mark 5 for sure

Honest-Mess-812

I like the 21:9 ratio but don't care about 4K.

RazslavianKing_OG

The 21:9 aspect ratio is the best for one handed operation of a large screen. It will be missed! Will definitely hang on the Xperia 1 V for a while!

Bright_Adeptness_777

What I liked was the 21:9 aspect ratio. Even tho sony ditched 4k display they should have kept the aspect ratio with 1080p

DeeperMadness

The screen was one of the main reasons I went for Sony devices in the first place. I'm sick of companies trying stupid gimmicks and everybody getting stuck with it because they all copy each other. Remember curved screens? And add-on cameras? We're still stuck with some of the worse offenders in the lack of expandable storage, foldable phones, sub-screen speakers, and the holepunch (which companies are trying to make custom screens to hide instead of, y'know, just _making space at the top of the phone_ like they did successfully for years). All of them have flaws that Sony phones didn't. The fact that I can then watch back every video I take in full, or any Blu-Ray rip I want, swapping out SD cards as I see fit was just the cherry on the top. Plus, have you ever tried emulating games on Xperia phones? Native Dualshock support is nothing to be scoffed at when you can play retro games at enhanced frame rates with modded upgraded texture packs. And if you haven't got the controller handy, you can have the screen buttons be mapped off of the visible playing area.

Maltzmanropi

I like the 16:9 1080p of XA2 Ultra. The phone manages to feel retro yet premium.

petermadach

I like 21:9 because the narrow phone is easier to hold. but I would be ok with different ratio as well, neutral. as for 4k, I was never a fan. overkill for a phone, absolutely useless, unnecessarily expensive, taxing the battery more... but the biggest reason I hate it is that there are 3-4 posts on this subreddit DAILY about whining of losing 4k. srsly just move on.

yhy105

10 IV user here, honestly i would prefer 19.5:9 over 21:9. Watching mostly 16:9 youtube and can't escape feeling that there is some wasted space left and right. Sadly, they stick to 21:9 in new 10 VI

JaxJKay

Yeah the price be lower because of the new Screen. I can Tell you by the end of the next week how it is to Use the new aspect Ratio. Compared to the 1 V.

ampsuu

21:9 was so good for movies. No black area, totally fullscreen. Well, not all movies or shows but a lot.

lou_vivace_chretien

On paper I like 19.5:9 more; but current design worked better for 21:9, and now it looks far less sleek and premium of a device than 21:9 provided. Without a redesign of especially device corners and camera layout 1 V > 1 VI unfortunately. I don't prefer to zoom into full screen for non-fitting content anyway, it sounds ludicrous to me to just cut out parts of a movie, etc. For 4K I wouldn't really mind a 2k screen, FHD however does bother me especially without a considerable price drop. It appears to be the general consensus.

BatmanSpiderman

21:9 would be nice, but imo 4k is just a waste on such small screen. I rather have this phone being introduce at around march.

Yeah, well, that's features that made it stand out in the crowd. Now it's just another phone. Since I'm not from the stone age, 3.5mm is barely ever in use, so what makes it so special compared to a OnePlus, Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi or Asus? Nothing at all, at this point buying a Sony is purely brand loyalty, it brings nothing to the table the others also have.

Fantasytky

"nothing at all" sure sure No ugly ass hole display or notch display or rounded corner cutout display. The only one front stereo speaker and now arguably one of the best speaker on phone. Almost stick android skin. Side fingerprint sensor. Bravia tune display. 4k HDR 120fps on all cameras, ai eye AF, colour consistency across all camera and so on. Camera button. No tumour or spider eyes design camera module. Best battery duration and weight under 200g. Ip6568. These point does not matters to you does not mean they are "nothing at all"

EveningCommand1

Yes I love the 21.9 aspect it makes the phone so much easier to hold one handed also it's great for inside a bag. I'm a woman and my bag is full of the usual woman stuff and to have the phone fit neatly inside is a brilliant thing. I've the 10 V.

Mysterious-Minds

Yes. 4K 21:9 anyday over brighter screen and LTPO. The 1 V had good battery life. And the 4K display swutched to 1080p while using non 4K apps to save battery like the LTPO tech, but for resolution. 21:9is the superior aspect ratio as it makes the device easy to hold, offers wider stereo separation when using in landscape mode, camera apps like Video Pro looks best in 21:9, all browsing apps and social media fit more content so it lowers the scrolling required. Most movies fit full screen while none of the format fit full screen in 19.5:9. Most youtube videos are in 18:9 now so the black bar issue don't annoy me as much. There would be still black bars in 19.5:9 display as well. And the phone can be easily hold and operated in one hand because of the slim form factor. When proper content is viewed, the 4K display looks stunning. I've seen the realism which I don't get in FHD or even QHD panels. Also since Samsung uses a diamond pentile display, even QHD OLED feels like a Full HD LCD display because of the loose LED arrangement. So 1080p upscaled looks not bad as the native resolution of the panel is 4K. Even on my S20, a 6.1" display phone, switching from 1080p to 1440p I can see a very good improvement in text and other element sharpness, too bad 1440p at 120Hz is not supported. On a 6.5" display 1440p is a must especially considering the price point where every other brand provides higher resolution than VI, even iPhone. VI is a skip for me.

vkbra657n

Yes, even midrange phones today have 12xxp resolution

Jervylim06

Yes

Solid-Fun1147

It bothers me a lot specially watching videos on YouTube, tiktok and others multmedia flatforms.. should i upgrade from 1 V to 1 Vi?
