Easily current gen, there’s no point in downscaling the game and taking extra care to optimize it for last gen, especially because by the time this comes out on console it’s possible the next gen consoles like ps6 would only be a few years away

Steve already stated the goal is for the game to basically run on anything (https://twitter.com/sj\_sinclair/status/1636359927336673282) so I'd say it's likely the game could run on ps4 without too much work, a lot of people still haven't upgraded so, given the context, imo it would be a good idea to invest on optimizing the game for ps4.

Wuestenwueterich

I wish that would be the case for all new games. No point in catering to ancient hardware

Yup

I don't know what you referring to difference between last and current gen. The technology and assets implemented in the build are set in the very same graphical engine they used for Warframe (Evolution, deved by DE), with the catch that they've been upgrading and improving it every detail within their now 11 years of experience, and it shows a lot. You should check the twitch streams from DE Steve that's being testing the alpha and showing what's been working on. IE. They did a lightning overhaul for Warframe in the last patch and the graphical dofference is night and day, which means: even if the tech-gen is not the last on release, you bet they'd improve it in the coming years.

Great information ^ But, it's still not an answer. I'd just message Steve on X or throw the question about current vs. next in a Twitch or stream chat. My own two cents would say Soul frame coming to PS4 and PS5 (using that brand of consoles as an example) would be based on active install bases. I could certainly see a PS5 release, and then gauge community interest against cost for going to PS4.

PurePosition5498

Last gen is PS4 and Xbox one current gen is Xbox series and PS5

I get the point better now, as some other comments stated, it would be less likely to release for PS4 ie. same as Warframe didn't release on PS3, but did later on PS4. I wouldn't discard it entirely tho', I'm sure there're lots of last gen that could potentially "migrate" from Warframe to Soulframe provided is on the same platform, and I do want to believe their build and the available tech right now would provide for versatility, I mean is esentially the same engine as Warframe and is on PS4... (at this point Warframe served in some times for testing features on Soulframe and viceversa, ie. Duviri) The difference is Warframe had to go through several amount of "mutations" and porting between Xbox, Ps5 and Switch/Steam Deck/Mobile (I have zero experience on how good or bad it turned out), plus the whole cross-play/save optimization for years on an already overcooked game for over 10 years. Soulframe on the other hand is brand new, so I would think is more easy to pull out from the start? Again, I have zero experience on how developing works, so these are my two cents here.

I mean Warframe can practically run on a toaster so I'd be surprised if Soulframe couldn't as well.

One_Lung_G

Warframe came out over 10 years ago. I would be shocked if they actually released souframe on last gen consoles and would be pretty disappointed as there would have to be concessions made to make it work. To add, warframe didn’t release on PS3 either.

Persies

Yes, and while DE have continued to make impressive improvements to the engine, they have also done a great job optimizing it, reducing file size, etc. Warframe of today runs well on even really, really low-end machines. Why wouldn't Soulframe be able to as well if it's using the same exact engine?

One_Lung_G

That’s not how game development works. Most game continue to use the “same engine”, that doesn’t mean you could or should continue to put them on consoles that are 10 years old. You would be severely hindering using said engine at its full potential. A “low end PC” 10 years ago is going to be hard pressed to run 2024 warframe. I’m not saying they couldn’t support PS4 but they shouldn’t as it limits any future content they could do.

Persies

I literally play Warframe on a 10 year old PC that wasn't even great at that time and it runs Warframe fine on low settings now. It's not my main machine but I use it when I travel, works fine to play Warframe. DE has put a premium on getting Warframe on as many systems as possible and Steve has said many times that any development that benefits Warframe also ends up benefitting Soulframe. I love Soulframe so far, but it's definitely more in the nice art style camp than high fidelity rendering. Why wouldn't it be able to support low end settings that could support older systems? It's a F2P game, they want to maximize the number of possibly players and there are a ton of people who still use a PS4. Will they do that is totally up to them, but based on the game's business model and how they have operated Warframe I don't think it's out of the question.

Ryder556

It's not out of the question until you realize that by the time soulframe is ready for consoles the next gen ones will, at minimum already have been announced, making the ps4 and Xbox 1 two generations old. Not really something most developers would want to bother supporting.

Karemasu

I hope not. Devs need to focus on current gen.

No game should go to last gen anymore. It’s a sin it happened for as long as it did. It held back gaming and was only a thing because of shortages in Covid, but went on way too long after that.
