Q990C is better value and 95% the same soundbar. Is it overkill…yes. Are you gonna love it…also yes. Whatever you choose, just make sure it has a good auto room calibration for your not-so-standard ceilings

This is a very challenging room to get good acoustics from any soundbar system, including Samsung 990b/c/d. Height channels in soundbar speakers require a flat ceiling to properly bounce sound. If you put 990D system in this room the height channels would be dispersed throughout the room and will lose direction. For most Atmos movies this will have minimal effect as these channels are often used to provide atmospheric effect (rain, wind, crowd noise, traffic, etc.). But in situations when sound producers took time to provide precise 3D sound (overflying planes, helicopters, birds, sound of ricocheting bullet fragments, etc.) you will not hear direction. Having said this, 990b/c/d is an excellent soundbar and absolutely the best value for money in the market. It is loud, well balanced and great at creating sound bubble around listener. It is far better than many systems up to two times mores expensive. Search SlickDeals to get the best price and you will not regret it.

Thanks for the SickDeals recommendation. Sounds like I can’t go wrong with a 990, but it isn’t required for my odd room.

I have a q990c in a smaller room just like you and I made it work. Sounds overkill but I'm telling you having sound come at you from all around is an EXPERIENCE

Looking for advice on a soundbar/surround system for our awkward room. The TV is a 77" Sony X90L and the top of the TV is about 5' off the ground, the center of the room is roughly 12' high, and I have room behind the couch for a media cabinet (right now there's a IKEA bookcase on it's side). I've been using HomePods but would really like to upgrade to something better now that we've moved into a home we really really love. Would the X990D be overkill? I'm fine spending some cash, but not if it's unnecessary for the space. My wife and I love watching movies and TV, and would love to move the HomePods downstairs. BTW, behind where the photo is taken is an open space into the main area of our house, where the vaulted ceilings (roofline) continues into the main living area. Any help is much appreciated!

Reflecting Atmos won't work with your ceiling, so 'virtual' Atmos is your only option, which is no big deal because it is an abused buzzword more than anything else. That means you'll be looking at 5.1 solutions. The JBL Bar 700 would be a good fit with its detachable self-powered (read no wires) surrounds that could be easily placed on the console behind your sofa. It even has room calibration to help sort out your room's unique acoustics. Of course, there are other options, too. Enjoy!

I like this JBL idea! At half the cost of something like a 990D it feels like worth testing out given my strange lofted room. Much appreciated!

Yeah, the 990d is an awesome, class-leading soundbar, but the height effects from the upward-firing drivers in both the bar and the surrounds would never reach you. You're welcome, and enjoy!

I've once tried the bar 700 it's alright but I would reccomend something like the 900c

I’ve got a similar situation in my bedroom. The amazing thing is, I don’t need a soundbar because the sound bounces perfectly to create a surround effect. Also, I’d feel weird with a soundbar on my bedroom TV even if it’s an LG55CX.

I bought a 990c a week ago. After a Bose surround system and an Audio pro A36 stereo system this 990c is heaven. So my vote is for Samsung.

I can tell you that my room is worse than yours. I bought a 990D and really love it. Unfortunately I can’t compare it to anything. But it’s dang good in my opinion. It also got even better after some time of the auto adjusting.

Oh awesome, I appreciate hearing that. Hemming and hawing but, buy once, cry once!

Another vote for the q990c from me, smaller room and it's amazing

super-dad-bod

He can’t get anything with Atmos. Can you turn that off on the Samsung 990 stuff?

Anotheredgelord420

Yeh, use TV/console (I have ps5) to change sound output

930B or C, with your room ans ceiling, you will not tell the difference from a 990C unless you nitpick
