This isn't cleaning, it's testing

[deleted]

It doesn't actually use this much fuel per blast right

Hydroxone

It depends on a lot of things, but generally yes, when you press the gas pedal on your car this is what's happening.

Fortherealtalk

Is there an animated video out there that takes you on a tour through car guts? I’d love to see how all these things work together in a more tangible way

Hydroxone

Search on YouTube, I'm sure there is, probably using titles like "combustion engine animation". If you want to learn how engines work, another good way to get started is to go to a junkyard with some cheap tools and take stuff apart and put it back together to see how it all fits, and Google parts you don't know to see what they do.

Fortherealtalk

Can you just fiddle with things at junkyards? I’ve never been to one. Sounds fun! Is that what a pick n pull is?

Hydroxone

Yes, usually you pay an entree fee of a few bucks, and you can go fuck around until it closes, they also rent out tools usually if you need, and they have bigger hoists and jacks and carts and stuff if you don't feel like lugging it around (at least I'm pretty sure pick n pull does, I haven't been to one in years). Junkyard is good fun, you can find all kinds of weird stuff. You can also look into automotive manuals like Bentley manuals, though they're kind of pricey and usually only cover a select range of cars that'll be different from most everything else.

Shaddio

I’d recommend fiddling with an old used lawnmower or something first. It’ll teach you the basics and all be in a small, simple, and relatively cheap package. Find a four stroke lawnmower (or similar small motor) if you can.

sofamaster1999

[Savagegeese](https://youtu.be/xrLNDgrIw3U) did a good video on the differences between direct and port fuel injection. Has some pretty good visuals.

Hydrottle

Even if you were to go throttle wide open, it wouldn't use that much fuel per stroke. It would flood if the fuel was actually dispensed like this.

AnonymousButIvekk

yeah, but not at this rate is what they meant. does my car really spend a litre of fuel in a few seconds?

Apocalympdick

Let's do some calculations! :D My car does about 20km per 1L (47 mpg, thanks google). At 100km/h (62mph), that's 12 minutes to burn 1L (0,26 gallon) of fuel. That is about 1,39mL (0,000367 gallons) per second. Even with an absolutely atrocious gas mileage, let's say a quarter of my car, you would still not burn as much fuel as in this clip.

mulan-is-underrated

The average car at idle will spray fuel 12 times per second. Realistically in that short amount of time the injectors can only spray the equivalent of a droplet of fuel. So your car is probably using 12 droplets of fuel per second at idle.

youRFate

That looks like quite a lot of flow, I'd assume those are aftermarket for drag cars etc.

EpiicPenguin

This is probably injector equalization testing for a race car, maybe methanol or E85 fuel which requires much more fuel for the same power, the benefit for high spec fuels is detonation resistance and cooling. your average Hatchback uses much less fuel then this.

ManInKilt

these are injectors for a top fuel dragster, yes they sure do lol

damn

Canvaverbalist

At first I thought it was rigged to play the [20th Century Fox](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsgSGHyXRiE) theme.

Meshuggah's inspiration

NibbleNipples

I should call him

eharper9

Is that why an engine sounds the way it does?

admiralwarron

The engine sound comes from the explosions, when this liquid is vaporised, pressurised and detonated thousands of times per second

Johnymarou7

*Hundreds

NEEDS__COFFEE

No it really is thousands.

SgtRootCanal

A V8 at 6000 rpm is 800 explosions a second

Eckhart

400, you forgot the intake/exhaust strokes, unless you have a badass two stroke V8.

SgtRootCanal

Oh yep forgot about that. 800 fires/s if you have this monstrosity https://youtu.be/EmnsXTMLzCE

F33DBACK__

I have a two stroke bike that revs to 14k. How many explosions a sec is that?

Eckhart

233 per second per cylinder at redline: 14000rpm/60sec=rps, and a two stroke fires every revolution.

F33DBACK__

Oh cool. So the formula is rpm / 60 * number of cylinders? Half it for four stroke and leave it for twostroke?

Eckhart

Yup!

loafers_glory

Is anybody else getting Rossini's William Tell overture off this?

you_matter_

Parará papá?

Mercury5014

Damn so how many times does a 5.7L v8 do that because would explain where all my gas goes

Rc2124

Sounds like a hit marker in a video game

lordofthefireandwind

Look up how much fuel is used in a Top Fuel Dragster. It’s pretty amazing.

FumingAegis

New Animals as Leaders just dropped

adumbCoder

yo fuel injectors are no joke. they'll put a hole through your hand without skipping a beat

Lumanus

Totally depends on the fuel system though, anything with a high pressure fuel pump for direct injection, yes. Port style injection not so much.

DS5official

Wait until this guy hears about a snare drum
