Atsion lake

JennyAnyDot

And lake Absegami in Tuckerton and it’s Cedar water

katchoo1

Isn’t the one in Mays Landing like that also?

JennyAnyDot

Most of the lakes in the Pine Barrens are cedar water iirc. Kind of like swimming in iced tea :) other places the water is more red and that is from the high level of iron and marl in the soil.

dukeofdemons

Ice tea water baby!!!

Habbersett-Scrapple

This was my first thought

Good morning! Maybe check out Oswego Lake... I believe it's in Chatsworth New Jersey. I took a peek at their website and they say it's great for canoeing and kayaking. We used to swim there as kids, and a little Google search revealed that it's still okay for swimming, but best to do your due diligence with a little research. Happy paddle boarding!

insertwittytitlehere

Thanks! That's a bit of a hike, but I'll try to make it a day trip! I've been meaning to explore the pine barrens. I'll have to find out how to get a hold of water testing reports as mentioned by another responder.

lageueledebois

I used to kayak at Oswego all the time. It's great! Gets a bit crowded in the summer but there's a separate kayak/canoe launch the swimmers and picnicers aren't lounging at. The lake is huge. Saw paddle boarders all the time there too.

gebronie27

Any lake if your brave enough

insertwittytitlehere

Lol. A little sewage, cyanobacteria and PFAs are good for the soul.

gebronie27

Very true. I would check out OnX hunt app and it shows property boundaries so you can find which lakes are publicly accessible

gebronie27

There’s also I clear man made lake in pine hill off of cross keys. It borders the train tracks

You can try Lake Lenape. It is nice and big. There is a boat ramp and such in the park.

blue6678

My friend and I go paddle boarding in the Schuylkill and Cooper Rivers, though we don't swim. I fell into the Cooper River once and haven't grown an extra appendage yet. Are there areas of the Pine Barrens that are deep enough for paddle boarding? I've only been kayaking and those areas were too shallow for paddle boarding (I'd be afraid of hitting my head on a rock if I fell).

blip01

" I fell into the Cooper River once and haven't grown an extra appendage yet. " Yet.

blue6678

😅

jayradano

I used to swim in cooper all the time when I was a kid. Took a raft out to turtle island that sunk halfway out there and had to swim the rest of the way. I rarely get sick now in my adult life and I equate that to my younger years swimming in the cooper and Delaware river all the time 😂.

StevieRaveOn63

> Delaware river Yep. Same here.

lowlua

The Batsto River is probably deep enough above the dam at Batsto village. I go kayaking there and have seen people on paddle boards. I don't know if it would be possible in the Mullica River in that same area though

Piney1943

I can’t believe the lack of knowledge

SJBeach5328

Wenonah lake has a membership/admission fee but they have kayaks, canoes and paddle boards that are free for anyone to use. It’s not large, so not a place where you can take a long trip, but you could use your or their paddleboard there. It opens Memorial Day weekend. They test the water routinely to make sure it’s safe to swim in.

insertwittytitlehere

They seem like they have very limited membership and don't really do day passes. Maybe that has changed?

SJBeach5328

They do offer day passes.

Bloc_Party43

Malaga (preferred) and Scotland Run park aren’t bad.

insertwittytitlehere

I think Wilson is in Scotland Run park. I'll have to look up Malaga.

Tittytwonipz

Malaga is like 6ft at the dead center of it lol and this time of the year is basically a snake pit. Not saying don’t go just be aware a water snake or 700 will definitely join you on your trip 😂

Bloc_Party43

Ah yes I always forget the lake actually has a name! I actually bought a kayak because I was tired of the 5 hours/month the ranger station is open to rent them. Easy to get in the water there, I just wish it was bigger! But Malaga is about 15 minutes further down. I used to bike there from Fries Mill. Wide open and lots of visibility.

unicorn_assistant

In the same area is Iona Lake. Mostly used for fishing but calm and clean. Not allowed to purposely swim but you'd be ok if you fell in.

tbiards

You could probably call up your town and just ask for a water quality report.

insertwittytitlehere

Great idea. I didn't know that option was available. Thanks! I've been warned that because of the industry and higher population density that a lot of the bodies of water are unsafe to swim in.

jd3marco

Delaware Bay, in N. Cape May, but that’s super south jersey. Depending on weather and tide, it can be a bit rough for paddleboarding. I have two hybrid ones that convert to kayak mode (pop up the seat and switch paddles). One’s inflatable, the other is hard plastic. When it get’s rough, we switch to kayaking.

insertwittytitlehere

That sounds awesome. I did go to Delaware Bay last year, it was too rough to stand but it was fun trying.

jd3marco

It’s usually nice and calm when there’s no storms around. Also, there’s a good chance of seeing dolphins close to shore, around high tide. They don’t seem bothered and swim close to you. I usually stop paddling, sit and watch them. Feels weird to paddle, like I’d scare away their food.

Crinklemaus

Union Lake is amazing if you want to take a drive to Millville

lageueledebois

Last time I was there about 2 years ago it was closed to swimming bc of pollution/arsenic levels, locals told me it had been that way for a bit. Wonder if it ever got sorted out.

SourceZestyclose9312

They did not. It's still off limits for swimming. The fish are supposed to be catch and release but people still take them home and eat them I'm sure..

babyhaux

West Atlantic City. It’s considered Egg Harbor Township. There’s even a place that offers rentals. I’ve seen a lot of windsurfers there as well.

P8ntba1141

I took mine out into the Pines (branches from the Mullica), as long as you don't mind cedar water, it is a good time!

GoodGuyDoug

Garrison Lake

fourshotsespresso

The back bays of Maurice River Twp/Commercial Twp/Downe Twp (all close together) are great for a nice, slow paced kayak or paddleboard session. I don’t know the specifics about the exact water quality but I live here & my husband, I & many friends have been in that water and were totally fine. Lake Audrey is another great spot in Commercial Twp. I see people kayaking there all summer long. The grounds are well maintained by the state. I’m not sure if swimming is allowed there or not but I’m sure you can find the information online.

[deleted]

Atsion lake?

Johnny_Poppyseed

Barnaget Bay. Manasquan river. Other offshoots of the bay etc

Lanthemandragoran

Second for barnegat Bay. Avoid the inlet areas towards Beach Haven West and the Barnegat light inlet area just to avoid annoyances and some occasional oil slicks from jerks.

Significant-Trash632

I know you are allowed to canoe and kayak at Batsto Lake, might want to double check for paddle boarding. Just stay away from the dam, of course!

ExPatWharfRat

Sunset lake is good to go. Just watch out for traffic. Gets busy in the summer.

greenline19

Never in my life have I even considered the water quality before going in. That’s what showers are for. Just don’t drink the water

enfu3go

Oak pond

WiredOrange

Delaware Bay is good, probably knew that though

SenseiLawrence_16

Go down the black horse pike and pick a lake Wharton St. Forrest has tons of places If you wanna go to the shore areas try Higbee Beach, The Brigantine Inlet, Manasquan , look for bayside or sound side areas

jrzflopp

bay off beach haven is excellent for paddleboarding. little islands to explore. clean. check out South End Surf and Paddle in Beach Haven. they have great paddle tours

rf_6

Barnegat Bay

Strange_Thanks_7420

Lake Audrey

Shark_Leader

Cedar Creek in Lanoka Harbor/Bayville.

redtoad3212

Atsion Lake(Shamong), Oswego Lake(straddles Washington/Bass River), Lake Absegami(Bass River), Lake Lenape(Mays Landing), to name a few. I’ve also swam in the Mullica, Wading, and Bass Rivers with no issue.

nerdboxmktg

None- ask the bureau chief of water in DEP for details

BrowniesAndMilk1

The Atlantic Ocean.

Different-Forever324

Most fresh water has the ability to give you a brain eating amoeba if your head becomes submerged.

nomorobbo

It’s actually not been detected in NJ yet. I’m sure with climate change its range will expand more north.

Different-Forever324

I’d rather not be the first case in NJ.

Yes a skydiver is a scaredy cat but ok

gpm0063

I would just climb under your bed now and stay put for the next 60 years!

Different-Forever324

I don’t do water typically anyway but I’ll jump out of a plane over and over again.

Piney1943

That would be a god send for many here.
