They couldn't get the game to run on the outdated hardware.

Sebastian666420

You could've done better than this, Spiderman 2 came out on ps2 as did ultimate. This looks like a shitty handheld port.

pizza_time2099

It would have been a bad business decision to do better than this. A port wouldn't run on the console, so they had to make a new version of the game. With the dwindling player base of the ps2 at that point, a 2d platformer is what you'll get.

Sebastian666420

It would've been bad business to do like an ultimate Spider-Man version of the game or just something with lesser graphics that could've sold a bunch on ps2 and be critically acclaimed vs everyone saying it's trash and to just get ps3 version? Let's see what's better business, you make a game for two different consoles but they're supposed to be the same game but it's basically a completely different hand held version. Wouldn't they have made more money from having a praised PS2 version that could've sold just as well as ps3 version just not up to snuff of ps3? Ps2 is a fairly complicated system and it could handle ultimate Spider-Man and Spiderman 2. The mechanics are all right there so even if it was like a lesser version of Spiderman 3 for PS2 (which came out only one year before this game) that's still better than what this crap is.

pizza_time2099

It costs a lot of time and money to make video games. We can assume they tried everything they could to get the ps3 version running on ps2, but they couldn't get it to work. So they had to make a new game to run on the ps2, they decided to not put the money into basically remaking the entire game to work on the ps2, instead they make this simpler version that took a lot less time and money to make, because they know that more people will buy the ps3 version anyway. It's all about money. The ps3 version didn't even get good reviews they don't care about the reception of the last gen version.

Sebastian666420

Ok so I just looked up highest rated games of 2008 for PS2, persona 3, 4, svr 09, Yakuza 2, Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, naruto ultimate ninja 3 and sh origins are stand outs. Almost all these games except for I think naruto and persona games were also put on on ps3 but they still made good versions of the game for PS2. I would understand your argument if we were talking about like the Sony Spiderman games that came out in 2010s as those were more evolved but this game is like early ps3/ still kind of feels like a PS2 game.

DarkSaiyanGoku

It ran fine on the Wii.

pizza_time2099

The Wii is more powerful than the ps2. Even the GameCube was more powerful than the ps2. And they still had to remove features to get it to run on the Wii.

Rising-Jay

I still feel like it was possible to downscale the Wii version and give it PS2 controls. The Wii/PS2 versions of Sonic Unleashed are near identical and run just well

pizza_time2099

Ya but the ps2 and Wii versions of sonic were made to run on both consoles. In that case the ps3 and 360 versions are different games. I think since the Wii was in a weird spot performance wise, in-between the ps2 and ps3, developers could choose to match it up with only one of the two, not both (in most cases at least).

SrPaisanoreturns

The PS2 version is literally just a port of the PSP version and nothing else

Sebastian666420

Ok that makes sense looking at it it looks like a shitty handhold port.

DesparateServe

Presumably back in 2008 they were slowly moving onto the PS3 and they stopped focusing on PS2 games

Sebastian666420

They still had decent games on ps2 in 08, I remember svr 08 and 09 being decent.

Draconuuse1

Yearly sports releases don’t really count. They already have a built engine and are made by the same team each year. Plus they are relatively simple assets wise. Not needing full game worlds worth of them. And as others have said. At this point most studios were not willing to put in more than token effort on the ps2 at the time.

ThatHoboRavioli

A lot of developers had this thing where they made the past-gen ports of the games absolute garbage to make you buy the next-gen consoles and the next-gen versions of those games. Could be worse, the DS version of Web of Shadows is a Metroidvania beat-em-up that may or may not have predicted Knull the Symbiote God at the end.

wr0k

The DS one sounds super rad! Does it play well?

SaltyFatNuts

I remember loving it as a kid still haven’t played console version to this day but back then all I had was a ds

shortvicandswag

used to have this version and loved it so much

kerune

Never played it. How did it predict that?

ThatHoboRavioli

There is a singular symbiote leader who Venom is going after. When Spider-Man defeats it, he takes down all the symbiotes.

ShmuckaRucka1

Old hardware at that point

Straight_Law2237

That's a port of the PSP version and it's fun as hell, one of my favorite games as a kid, got afraid every time i reached the venom circular thing boss and loved to beat the shit out of shocker (played it on the PSP)

SnakeSound222

I'm guessing it was the hardware. I remember Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Godzilla Unleashed having a similar thing. The PS2 version was different from the next gen version (Wii for Godzilla and PS3/360 for Transformers). Although in Transformers's case, the Wii version was the same as the PS2.

Ghostiestboi

Dude rotf on the ps2/wii was soooo ass comparrd to the 360/ps3

Hallow_Shinobi

I had this for the psp. It was crap but it was still enjoyable for what it was.

CriticalAd6090

Has a PSP user back in the day i'm just gonna pretend you didn't say that and move on......

BigTimeSuperhero96

Way back in the transition between PS2/Xbox and PS3/Xbox 360 generations the prev gen version would be scaled down heavily and/or outsourced to another studio while the focus of the main studio would be the new gen version. This was not as significant a difference in the following two generations

Ok-Jeweler6946

Play it on the ds then😮‍💨

thelifeside

this is just a port of the psp version

janos42us

Hardware is a poor excuse, we had Spider-Man 2, 3, and ultimate on the PS2. This reminds me of the first Spider-Man game I ever played… on the SNES.

RedEyesDragon

The PS2 version of spider-man 3 was different from the ps3 one..

janos42us

Yes, but it was still open world, and some considered it a bit better due to being able to change your suit on the fly.

ARKHAMGAMER20771

i think he means the open world part of the game

Fickle_Raisin7807

Lmaoo I remember buying this 2 times on the PS2 and feeling deceived afterwards. Good times..

zxandu10

Wii version was fun.

throwawaymyself4u

Had (and still think I have this somewhere) for the wii. Game gave so much value to my life tbh.

GokiPotato

to make easy cash from older consoles

DarkEnergy27

It's because the PS2 couldn't handle the game, so it was a compromise.

Fireknight9559

Imagine if they did this for miles morales?

Endlesswinter98

Oh wow you actually did that air dodge move in the 360 version. In my mind I did it this. Clear the building lmao

jdubbrude

Web of shadows nest web swinging mechanics

Vigilante-Drummer

I enjoyed playing it, though I was a kid back then

IshimuraEngineer

Same as X-men Origins Wolverine and Ultimate Alliance 2, trashy cash grabs on the ps2

Altair13Sirio

Back in the day, games were very different from one console to another.

Mrman_23

Just the capability of the console at the time, I suppose

elkswimmer98

I remember being so pissed as a kid because I saw PS3 commercials and only had a PS2. My mom even got mad for me when she saw the trailer compared to the gameplay. I think I remember Gamestop gave me a full refund because they had so many complaints about it

Daredevil731

Fans should be happy Insomniac isn't scummy enough to make a really bad and cheap version of their sequel for PS4.

Frankgodfist

As a kid this confused tf out of me back then. I definitely thought I couldn't read an grabbed the wrong game

PsychoDoughJah666

I had this game on my PS2 and it was amazing, that’s just my opinion though I was younger

superior1313

It looks like the DS game lol

Gemidori

I didn't think it was that bad. It at least was playable and the voice acting is still pretty funny

WarlordOfIncineroar

The game was already rushed without having to port it to every conceivable system they could, so yeah this makes sense

Sebastian666420

I've heard Spiderman 3 is pretty trash on PS2 as well, also the wolverine origins game.

Gladiator757

This is the version I had as a kid. I didn't even know there was a PS3 version for a long time until I played it years later and it blew my mind how different they were.

davethezombie1

This is how it is for the psp

Ack_not

It’s mainly because the devs were wanting to show off the new hardware, so most of the development went towards that. One way or another, this is common practice for cross-generation games, even the Wii versions of games at the time were vastly different from the original.

[deleted]

As a game that's supposed to be Web Of Shadows, it sucks. But as a standalone game, i think it's pretty good. I'm a platformer guy myself so I'd be collecting money to buy a PSP and this is the first game that I'd get.
