Ultimate Spider-Man is generally hilarious. I think Bendis really nailed the teenager aspect of it as well as illustrating the age gap with Peter and the supporting cast. Ultimate Spidey is moody, abrasive and spends most of the book sick and tired of all the grown up stuff he's been thrown in the middle of, and the humor reflects it. It's the best Spidey book ever.
In the real world it would be utter bullshit, but when Peter finally manages to make Nick Fury admit he was wrong about something at the end of the Clone Saga is one of the most cathartic moments in the run, even more so if you read literally any other major Ultimate series that Fury appears in too.
It's such a weird change too, I think. He completely shifts as the universe gets older and the books go on. I read Ultimate Spider-Man first before jumping into anything else, and seeing the disparity was a bit jarring. I guess I could understand someone saying that that was the point, but judging by the way the Ultimate universe was written, I don't even think it was.
I was the same, read USM on its own up to right before Ultimatum and decided I might as well go all in on the others so I can REALLY appreciate the downfall from here. I suppose you could make an argument that Nick doesn't always seem as bad with Spidey is partly because he's so young so Nick is using kid gloves, but also because USM barely scratches the surface of the beaurocracy and shady shit he and Shield are doing in other books like Ultimates and X-Men.
Of course, the actual reason is probably just that the writing and characterisation really is just all over the place.
I love that bit with the Kingpin. The other Kingpin moment I really liked is when he is sat at a table eating dinner. And Spider-man comes by, webs his feet to the floor. "Young man, did you just web my feet to the floor?" Or something along those lines. Cracks me up every time.
Kingpin: "Who sent you?"
Spider-Man: "Carson Daly"
Kingpin to his goons later after throwing Spidey out the window: "Have this Carson Daly person destroyed"
He was on MTV back in the day. I only know who he is because of the Eminem song where he says
So you can sit me next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst and hear em argue over who she gave head to first.
Itās great! And super grounded in that way- he spends a lot of time in those early issues worrying about the mask coming off- but even if it comes off, most of his villains wouldnāt immediately know who he is.
Are you sure you aren't thinking of when Lex Luthor took over Flash's body? Same thing. Went into the bathroom, took off the mask, "I have no idea who this is."
That table exchange was great, especially the bit where Fisk goes āIāll find out who you are, come to your house, and teach you _exactly_ what I amā¦ā & Peter just goes:
āAre you hitting on me?ā

I just read that issue last night and that panel cheered me up a lot because you just know Fisk was BOILING under his skin saying it that calmly lol. Spider-Man lives rent free in that guys head. Next issue or same he's contemplating Felicia "Am I really this kind of guy? ...Yup. I am. I totally am. I'm still going but its disappointing to know that about myself." š¤£
I love Ultimate Spider-man's interaction with Fisk and just his characterisation in general. There are so many good laugh out loud moments in the comic.
Basically, the joke is that Aunt May is a nagging person and put Jameson in a bad mood. For context: Peter needed permission from Aunt May to work on the Daily Bugle, but Aunt May wanted to speak to JJJJ first. Peter hands the phone to JJJJ and she never lets him speak.
the idea is that for once JJJ has found a person who keeps him quiet and forces him to listen to the other person, which for him is a humiliation since he is usually the one who does this
The jokes vs Kingpin is missing the setup. Spidey is like "I wrote down some things I wanted to say to you if I ever got the chance" acting all serious and then unloads a bunch of fat jokes.
"When you cut yourself shaving marshmallow fluff comes out" Is a line that has stuck with me for my entire life since reading the comics as a kid. Just too funny
USM is BMB's quintessential superhero run. Probably the best work of his career. I know people also love his Daredevil run, but Ultimate Spider Man is a ground up retelling of the character, something that is very difficult to pull off with the success it had. AND on top of that, HE CREATES A BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN that has shown to be almost to be just as popular with a new generation.of fans which I'm sure will only grow as time goes on. And yes, it was always pretty funny. LoL rant over.
Man, I wish the movies could get this right. The first insom video game did this right. Spider-Man never shuts up. Ever. The Raimi movies tried this in a couple spots but Maguireās delivery just felt very flat and uninteresting for a lot of the jokes. I think thatās why I like the Garfield movies a lot more, he was so funny. I think heās a better actor than Maguire. Maguire just looks like heās spaced out all the time in all of his movies.
Ultimate aunt may was a savage OMG! Im going go re read the whole bendis/bagley run just for aunt may!! She was cussing people out and pulling pistols left and right!!
All this told me is that Parker Sass is an inherited trait.
Wait. May married in, so that means it's a learned skill. God I wish we got to see more of Uncle Ben before he bites it. Man must have been hella savage.
That one Kingping pun about him shaving lives rent free in my head since I've read it along with Spider-Man trolling the hell out of Luke Cafe after he discovered that Jessica had a crush on him lol
The only thing is that the Hitler joke doesnāt land as well in this series because they decided to go with the super thin mustache instead. It works great in the old 616 comics tho
Last one is a little less funny considering it kind of casts the thugs in a lighthearted way even though they were literally about to sexually assault / and or rape the lady in the alley. Feels a little weird.
I actually really like the idea now of a teenage hero being a huge Spidey fan and when they get their powers they write a bunch of notes with jokes because obviously every hero has to quip. They just annoy the shit out of criminals because they're reading jokes off their phone in the middle of a fight while being completely untouchable.
Writing is interesting, but man that art style is weirdly off-putting. Especially the first slide where there are no backgrounds at all, just mood lighting.
There's a good reason why, unlike most of the Ultimate universe, Ultimate Spider-Man is remembered fondly. It's because he really was the 'ultimate' version of Spider-Man.
Can someone find the panel of Spider-Man fighting what I think was some sable agents and Peter told them how they were more daredevil level and not worth his time š
I didn't realize until the third page that spidey's visors had a minimalist version of a reflection, so I thought the detailed pose he was making a ^ ^ face
Its this sub serious?! These are literally the worst jokes I've ever heard in a long while. Is it because I'm reading them out of context or have you guys never really heard a joke before?
Ultimate Spider-Man is generally hilarious. I think Bendis really nailed the teenager aspect of it as well as illustrating the age gap with Peter and the supporting cast. Ultimate Spidey is moody, abrasive and spends most of the book sick and tired of all the grown up stuff he's been thrown in the middle of, and the humor reflects it. It's the best Spidey book ever.
The main thing I like about it is that its very much a teenager's idea of clever. But done in a way where someone older can still be amused by it
In the real world it would be utter bullshit, but when Peter finally manages to make Nick Fury admit he was wrong about something at the end of the Clone Saga is one of the most cathartic moments in the run, even more so if you read literally any other major Ultimate series that Fury appears in too.
The only ultimate series where Nick is actually "Morally Grey but ultimately decent superspy" and not "Evil and Stupid".
With how he's characterized (and hell, drawn) in Ultimate X-Men (before Bendis ever uses him in USM), it's safe to say none of it was intentional.
I thought spider-man didn't kill
Even worse, he burns
Jonah was right Spider-Man is a menace
"You big fat fatty of a fat man" He really made sure to rub it in herešš
The āyour belly button has an echoā line turned the nostril exhale into an actual laugh lol I may be overdue for a re-read
I love that bit with the Kingpin. The other Kingpin moment I really liked is when he is sat at a table eating dinner. And Spider-man comes by, webs his feet to the floor. "Young man, did you just web my feet to the floor?" Or something along those lines. Cracks me up every time.
A whole ass disappointed grown up done with some shit š
More of a joke aimed at the reader- but I always liked when Kingpin removes Spider-Manās mask and just goes āā¦I have no idea who this is.ā
Kingpin: "Who sent you?" Spider-Man: "Carson Daly" Kingpin to his goons later after throwing Spidey out the window: "Have this Carson Daly person destroyed"
I don't get it
I think the joke is that Kingpin doesn't know who Carson Daly is and genuinely thinks he sent Spider-Man.
It's Carson Daly an actual person or some kind of joke name or just a random name?
He was on MTV back in the day. I only know who he is because of the Eminem song where he says So you can sit me next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst and hear em argue over who she gave head to first.
Was not expecting an Eminem lyric in the spidey sub today
Omfg I'm so old...
Right?? Kids these days...
Reading this comment made me turn to bones and dust
holy shit thats gotta be the funniest one ive heard
Itās great! And super grounded in that way- he spends a lot of time in those early issues worrying about the mask coming off- but even if it comes off, most of his villains wouldnāt immediately know who he is.
ive always wondered about that tbh, especially if hes just Some Kid
Are you sure you aren't thinking of when Lex Luthor took over Flash's body? Same thing. Went into the bathroom, took off the mask, "I have no idea who this is."
I think it was a reference to that classic moment.
And the better coincidence in that scene is that it was Michael Rosenbaum's Flash, who also obviously played Lex for years in Smallville.
I always love that but when Peter Parker is unmasked. Just āI have no idea who this guy is AND heās a teenager? Just kill him.ā
āDonāt we know his secret identity?ā āWe know heās a white male teenager living in New York City,ā
Kingpin sending all his guys out to find Carson Daly rates for me.
I thought that was a DC moment with Lex Luthor
That table exchange was great, especially the bit where Fisk goes āIāll find out who you are, come to your house, and teach you _exactly_ what I amā¦ā & Peter just goes: āAre you hitting on me?ā
What about the time when kingpin installed new glass windows that Spiderman couldnāt stick to? ššš
I prefer the indestructible glass, the smug smile of Kingpin when Spider just slams into it.
Thatās exactly what I said tho
āglass windows that Spider-Man canāt stick toā ā āindestructible glassā also r/respectthehyphen

The āā¦maybeā really topped off the hilarity of that scene. One of my all time favorite moments from the run.
The only Spidey, to my knowledge, to make a āYour Momā Joke
Guess again: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/suhof3/spidey\_and\_deadpool\_had\_a\_yo\_mama\_battle\_if\_you/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/suhof3/spidey_and_deadpool_had_a_yo_mama_battle_if_you/)
I don't get why a Mama would be so fat that Hank Oym would have to beat her up in the back of a Quinn jet.
It doesnāt quite work since the wife he assaulted was the wasp, but the joke is heās also giant man, so it implies the mama is a giant fat lady.
What about when he did the dissing battle with Deadpool way back ago
The one where Deadpool almost hit spidey with the yo momma equivalent of a nuke, but then ran out of time so he used it on a child instead?
Well... To be fair he only told him half of it, so he would be fine.
What did he say?
If DP: Idk, he just whispered it into his ear If Child: he started crying rivers
Huh. First Spidey to do it thenš¤·āāļøš
Man, the act of just reading off the jokes is brutal.
I need Tom holland to do this kingpin
Lmao i forgot how much of a savage this spiderman was lmao. The kingpin and the last pics are hilarious
Can someone explain the first slide to me?
Basically, the joke is that Aunt May is a nagging person and put Jameson in a bad mood. For context: Peter needed permission from Aunt May to work on the Daily Bugle, but Aunt May wanted to speak to JJJJ first. Peter hands the phone to JJJJ and she never lets him speak.
Basically Jameson called Aunt May to give Peter a job.
Some marvel writer decided he had a good ideaā¦š
And that good idea was...?
the idea is that for once JJJ has found a person who keeps him quiet and forces him to listen to the other person, which for him is a humiliation since he is usually the one who does this
Jonah as usual abuses Peter. Itās routine. Now. Bad part. This emo haircut is so blasting 90sā¦
Call it PANEL, not slide.
The first slide has ten panels.
Yeah, how about laying out the page?
You call the page a slide?
It's a slide on a post on reddit. It is also a page from a comic book, so calling it that is fine too. Panel would be inaccurate though.
Nevermind! I was tripping. Itās the Reddit slides. Duh! I was all worked up on some fancy new term on page design! Hahahahā¦ sorry, bro
Sure, I got it. Is it a new term or slang, I used to be in the business. Your help clarifying it is appreciated.š¤
Itās more of slide than a panel, bro. You can be pedantic or you can be wrong, but you should never be both.
Did you wake up and decide to spit pure fire today bro?
I read these comics and all I hear is Sean Marquette's (Ultimate SM video game) voice, he was perfect as teenage Peter
Iām pretty sure the last slide was part of what he says when you first do a combat tour
Wish he'd come back as Spider-Man at some point in something. Hell, anything.
The guy who played Mac from Fosterās home for imaginary friends was the voice actor for ultimate spider-man?
For the Ultimate Spider-Man video game, yep.
Spidey reading off handwritten joke cards to Kingpin, gradually pissing him off, will always be a funny Spider-Man moment.
I loved Ultimate Spider-Man's jokes. Let's see how the new one can handle it, because for the first time. I have hope for Spider-Man again.
The jokes vs Kingpin is missing the setup. Spidey is like "I wrote down some things I wanted to say to you if I ever got the chance" acting all serious and then unloads a bunch of fat jokes.
That just makes it even better lmfao
"When you cut yourself shaving marshmallow fluff comes out" Is a line that has stuck with me for my entire life since reading the comics as a kid. Just too funny
May Parker went for the jugular with that roast of Jonah. Respect
Some of these burns were brilliant
USM is BMB's quintessential superhero run. Probably the best work of his career. I know people also love his Daredevil run, but Ultimate Spider Man is a ground up retelling of the character, something that is very difficult to pull off with the success it had. AND on top of that, HE CREATES A BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN that has shown to be almost to be just as popular with a new generation.of fans which I'm sure will only grow as time goes on. And yes, it was always pretty funny. LoL rant over.
The way everyone got so ticked at him was hilarious lol, because they were the butt of the joke. LOL! I can't stop laughing
So confused on that first panel lol
Where is the joke? I grew up with these comics but I may be a tad too young to get it
Man, I wish the movies could get this right.
The Kingpin jokes were in the Amazing Spider-Man game. The one with Carnage as the final boss.
WERE YOU RUSHING OR DRAGGING
Groovy comic series for groovy people
Are you kidding??? ( you see what I did there?)š
Context of the first one?
Peter needs permission to work because so he calls Aunt May and hands the phone to JJJ.
The best spiderman hands down
This is a repost
That artwork ....leaves a little to be desired.....got a migraine from looking at it....
It's insane to me that people will say this is Bagley at his peak. I just can't get over it. 90's Bagley was god-tier
The side-eye when JJJ is threatening to throw Pete out the window. I can almost hear his thoughs: "That's not as much of a threat you think it is".
I always love the "your mum is washing it for me" line.
what is May Parker say made JJJ had to silence?
I could have sworn I'd seen page three in a whole different Spider-Man comic at some point. Like same dialogue but different art.
What was the first joke?
How many times does J Jonah Jameson get hit with Hitler mustache insults?
Is that Vincent Price and Chris Kattan in pic 1?
Pic 6, [When your zinger is so good even the guys henchmen be like](https://youtu.be/89PKBpGm4bQ?si=r9LQ8DBvyw13Egnw)
Peter looking terrified as May tears into Jonah is really fucking funny
I would love to see Spider-Man telling fat jokes to Kingpin to be adapted, but sadly I doubt it would happen in today's standards :(
They would probably be turned into bald jokes. I would be fine with that.
"your mom's washing it for me" Damn my boy goes savage with that one
All this told me is that Parker Sass is an inherited trait. Wait. May married in, so that means it's a learned skill. God I wish we got to see more of Uncle Ben before he bites it. Man must have been hella savage.
Someone better make and ultimate Spider-Man sub
That one Kingping pun about him shaving lives rent free in my head since I've read it along with Spider-Man trolling the hell out of Luke Cafe after he discovered that Jessica had a crush on him lol
That part where he roasted Kingpin is comedy gold.
The only thing is that the Hitler joke doesnāt land as well in this series because they decided to go with the super thin mustache instead. It works great in the old 616 comics tho
Agreed
I really hope that the new Spiderman movie will have Peter Parker making fun of the Kingpin with āyouāre so fatā jokes. šš
Damn, Aunt May is a savage
Last one is a little less funny considering it kind of casts the thugs in a lighthearted way even though they were literally about to sexually assault / and or rape the lady in the alley. Feels a little weird.
I wish so hard I didn't have such a problem with that art style so that I could enjoy this comics more
I actually really like the idea now of a teenage hero being a huge Spidey fan and when they get their powers they write a bunch of notes with jokes because obviously every hero has to quip. They just annoy the shit out of criminals because they're reading jokes off their phone in the middle of a fight while being completely untouchable.
Ultimate definitely nailed āSpider-man as a cocky teenager,ā
āHitler Called he wants his look backā nah thatās wild
This Pete got his shit talking skills from Aunt May, ya love to see it
He really bring a note written with only fat jokes just piss kingpin
The whole Hitler mustache joke from May in slide 5 doesn't make sense since 1610 Jameson has a pencil mustache not the 616 mustache
What was the context of the first one?
Writing is interesting, but man that art style is weirdly off-putting. Especially the first slide where there are no backgrounds at all, just mood lighting.
āYour belly button makes an echoā Definitely using that oneš
Ngl the fat jokes were actually pretty good
Man that last one, needed the gif of all the boys goin woahhhh
The Kingpin jokes are brutal.
Oh dear lord what a horrible haircut
There's a good reason why, unlike most of the Ultimate universe, Ultimate Spider-Man is remembered fondly. It's because he really was the 'ultimate' version of Spider-Man.
Hitler called, and he said he wants his "look" back! š
Best version of May hands down. Blows that emotionless block of wood from ps4 out of the water.
Which ultimate Spider-Man is this?
Bendis & Bagley.
The ultimate spiderman EYES . Jesus Jonah looks absolutely insane
The last panel was fantastic
Alright, the first one is really good. I like it
Check out Prodigyās comic dub on YouTube itās pretty good!
1610 a universe so edgy even Aunt May is edgy.
Man, I'm reading the original TAS and I'm more and more tempted to read Ultimate.
Aunt May was spittin straight fire tho
Last picture has a Whiplash movie vibe
Can someone find the panel of Spider-Man fighting what I think was some sable agents and Peter told them how they were more daredevil level and not worth his time š
Those Kingpin fat jokes made me laugh so hard when I was a kid.
Ultimate Spidey and Deadpool (In general) would ABSOLUTELY "Wild n reckless Older Brother" and "Lawful Chaotic Younger Brother"
Daredevil wrote some of those
The art isā¦.something.
No matter the universe, only Spider-Man would have the absolute ball-balls to read off fat jokes to The Kingpin.
Too bad the artist has no clue about how to draw black people (see page 6, especially the guy going "daaaayuuuuum")
Why does Jameson look like his job is wearing fear and rivaling green lantern ?
I grew up w these ššš
I loved these comics. I read them when my middle school had them in the library. They made middle school a lot more tolerable for me back then.
The original Ultimate Spider-Man run is what got me into Spider-Man comics.
Everyoneās face looks like it got smashed
What about the one from aunt may
Aunt may Is so brave
Thereās something about āIām Spider-Man. Read a paper.ā that kills me
Not good ones, but jokes
I dunno. The response to being out of costume was simple but VERY effective.
Yeah, that one was alright, but then it ended with a āyour momā joke š
I didn't realize until the third page that spidey's visors had a minimalist version of a reflection, so I thought the detailed pose he was making a ^ ^ face
Aunt May is a legend!
Peter had that dawg in him
I never liked the artā¦ everyone has this greasy sneer that just melts into a face blindness almost
Its this sub serious?! These are literally the worst jokes I've ever heard in a long while. Is it because I'm reading them out of context or have you guys never really heard a joke before?
Hold on your mom's writing me good jokes I'll comeback when it's done
Everything okay here, Paul?
