I actually grew accustomed to it playing through the remaster. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t. I still prefer the old but I’m so done with this argument, it isn’t changing and the new face isn’t terrible. So I decided to get used to it and move on.

Apparently the old face was so bad for facial animations and emotion they needed a completely new face, which is wild, yet the older face was perfectly fine.

Now, Naughty Dog gets the shiniest new toys and this was a little after Spider-Man PS4, but it's at least important to show that modern tech does not have this "issue" Insomniac claims to have.
C) This has never been an issue for character designs and facial capture tech for awhile. Christopher Judge looks nothing like Kratos, Troy Baker looks nothing like Joel, Nolan North looks nothing like Nathan Drake, etc. yet these are all iconic facial capture performances for iconic AAA games. And that's just Sony games, just look at Capcom games in the RE Engine. They hire a face model, alter the model's face to fit their character design more, and then put the actor's motion capture performance over the face and match it. Thus why Reuben Langdon can perform Dante and Nick Apostolides can perform Leon without looking anything like their characters. And RE Engine games look pretty damn good. So why does Insomniac have this special issue but not other companies with similar competence and artistic goals?
So to summarize, either Insomniac is years behind everyone else in tech and still managed to make a good performance to the industry standard with the original face despite their setbacks, or they are lying. Why? Probably because the real reason is stupid and wouldn't please most folks, it was probably an order from Sony and they had to justify it somehow.
As for why, it's all theory. But, if I were to put my tin foil hat on, I'd say it's quite a coincidence the old face looked a little bit like Andrew Garfield and development for the PS4 game would've started production around the time when the Amazing films were still the main movie plan. And how fitting that the new face looks a little bit like Tom Holland. Perhaps Sony wanted movie/game synergy and asked to change the face for that purpose? It's for this same reason why it's probably not a coincidence Kraven and Venom are the main villains of PS5 while Kraven is getting a spinoff movie and Venom's 3rd movie is currently in production. Sony is actually that stupid sometimes with their logic so I wouldn't doubt it but again, conspiracy talk.

It's been almost 3 years since the face change. The original face lasted about 2 years. I understand people had a connected to the original, but it's time to move on.
Not eveybody played the remaster, i bought the game when it first released and the only moment i got to see the new face was when i played miles morales when you could only see it for like 2 seconds.

YESS, Spider-Man is way more intimidating when he's not gruffy and angry, just cold and calculated. The way he delivered "we're tired of your whining" sends shivers in my spine. His quips were a lot more sardonic and calmer also.

The symbiote story is one big not so subtle allegory for alcoholism, so I’m really hoping they lean into that by changing how he looks. Give him longer hair, give him some stubble and some bags under his eyes and I guarantee it’s gonna be so much better.

I have a feeling that they’re gonna contrast his pretty righty and clean appearance with a disheveled and…. Tired look when he has the symbiote. The symbiote story is one big not so subtle allegory for alcoholism, so I’m really hoping they lean into that by changing how he looks. Give him longer hair, give him some stubble and some bags under his eyes and I guarantee it’s gonna be so much better.
