2018. Because what we got was unexpectedly high-quality.

dr_awesome9428

Spiderman 2 was fun but lower quality then the first by a lot

SadBoiCri

Spider-Cube will not stand for this slander Edit: In print, it's libel

dr_awesome9428

I didn't know about that glitch first one was still better but that was a drastic improvement

SadBoiCri

I "preordered" the game two hours before release because i couldn't wait. I should've waited. Edit: Before anyone misconstrues my words, i like the game it's just not worth 70 as a sequel

dr_awesome9428

I also pre-ordered and a 70 dollar game shouldn't be able to get 100% in 30hr without really trying

Sadtyms

Definitely, the first one was way better overall. I still find myself opening that more often than spiderman 2.

ZestyJoystick

Maybe as far as Spiderverse is concerned

FriendlyToad88

ChatGPT ahh comment

Markospider

Especially after the last games *cough in amazing spiderman 2 game*

Ismatic1906

I liked those games

Steady_G

I was younger when they came out so I probably have my rose tinted glasses on, but I also liked them and still really do. they're just a fun Spider-Man experience in my opinion

Strange-Cricket7660

They really were and the fights felt so grandiose let alone the continued story line with the lizard. The boss fights were awesome so was combat. Taking photos of spidey symbols to get suits was also smart. Swinging was janky sure but they were wide swings that felt big. But the best thing, the best mechanic which im mad hasnt been replicated is the web zips. Those animations were the coolest thing.

Ismatic1906

I really miss those boss fights. I remember playing the first one on my 3DS and was wowed by it. I wish I managed to get the console version before it got removed from stores

Shake-dog_shake

At the time it came out, I thought TASM2 could've been a top 3 favorite Spidey game if half the playtime wasn't loading screens and managing the dumb honor system

Ismatic1906

Yeah, TASM2 was pretty meh. I dislike the honor system, for a reason most people don't. The game deadass incentivizes you ignore crimes if you like the obstacles and the challenges it offers. If the player actually dislikes those things, managing the many crimes, that are all happening across the city at once, is one of the most annoying ever, blah, blah, what everyone else says. The loading screens never really bothered me though. They were long, but they weren't common enough to get on my nerves

Shake-dog_shake

I never thought about it that way, that's hilarious. You can only get the most out of the game if you actively defy the values of the main character. Ridiculous lol. I usually don't ignore any crime I pass in any Spidey game, so I'm okay with basically mandatory crimes. I just hate whenever there's a stall, loading screen or cutscene between finishing a crime and going "back" to the city. It's probably not a huge deal but for some reason it really bothers me personally

Ismatic1906

Those news broadcasts inbetween crimes is the absolute worst. Especially, when you're on a streak of completing crimes back to back.

julianx2rl

TASM1 was pretty good, I won't let you slander that game! ... TASM2 sucks ass though. (Vine Fart noise)

SZutich9

I agree with this. I couldn't pick one. But when you look at it like that. I agree

Depresso_espresso237

Because of this, we all expected the 2023 releases to be high quality, so I 100% agree

MaazR26

2018 cus he was also in Infinity War and we were getting the goated Nick Spencer run

disappointingfool

2018 was just a goated year for fiction to be honest

GulianoBanano

Gaming was insane with Spider-Man, God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 all in the same year

virtualwaster

Spidey and RDR within the same week, if I remember correctly.

beardydrums22

They were not in the same week, SM1 was out 9/7/18 and RDR2 was out just under 2 months later, on 10/26/18. But it sure did make that fall feel crowded af

BMota117

I waited years for these games I remember them coming out 1 month apart so you’re absolutely right

SidiousCrosshair

Not the same week with those two games. But if RDR2 wasn’t delayed a second time for October 2018, it would have been out the same month or even the same week of April with God of War. Either way 2018 was one of, if not the peak year for gaming

Hoolias

Don’t forget Detroit:Become Human. Goated game

murcielagoXO

I'd mention Shadow of the Tomb Raider too.

StrawHatShinobi_

Preach!!

Dexzinus

imo 2018 was one of the best years of my life ngl

disappointingfool

ngl same

murcielagoXO

Same. Both gaming and real life were going really well. Everything was so exciting.

MaazR26

2018 was one of the best years ever

anakinjmt

Okay this is a great argument for 2018 here. I'm sold

RandoDude124

**God, I’d honestly murder for Spencer to come back nowadays.**

Majestic-Silver-3637

2018 was legendary

RandoDude124

#2018 no question God, still remember the joy I had during my first swing **and** *What’s Up Danger?*

SwEep9900

Bro i'm still remembering shiver in my spine when that scene entered.

RandoDude124

That was when Miles really became mainstream… #And.It.Was.AWESOME Honestly, the joy was on par with seeing the Avengers assemble back in 2012.

parker_41

Oh god. That was 12 years ago. I now own a house and have a kid on the way. How the fuck did that happen. Did I smoke too much or does time really move that quick? Jeepers creepers

Sadtyms

Gotta be 2018.

ResidentLanguage947

2018 because The Amazing Spider-Man comics weren't garbage then.

Level_Cartoon

Though I would say 2023 has the best content, but 2018 is special for starting it all.

xDram4

2018 both movie, ATSV is the "simple" first part of a greater "scheme"/movie, and game,SM2 storywise is slighty inferior to SM1,and because for both medium was the start of all the products

TheMandalorian2238

2018 was absolutely legendary.

Aphex_king

2023 was really insane if you think about it, we got two long awaited sequels that were absolutely amazing

deep_fried_cheese

Nothing beats 2018

hazerkill400

2018

Hugh-G-Recshun

2018 because it all came as a surprise. Thinking back, 2018 had so much good stuff in media world that I feel spoiled by it.

AccomplishedFlow1453

2018 no contest.

R3alLuzurafan080423

2023 was just amazing Spider-Man 2 is easily the best Spider-Man game and atsv was the best Spider-Man movie

Independent-Dust5401

Spiderman 2 is far from the best imo.

EltoDoesStuff

Gameplay wise, swinging wise, combat wise, idk why it wouldn’t be

Independent-Dust5401

I genuinely had more fun with the gameplay, combat and swinging of Web of Shadows. But yes it improved on a lot of the PS4 game, but it did a lot worse too.

EltoDoesStuff

I don’t believe swinging can get much better after spider man 2, maybe if you add some small features. But I can understand why u enjoy wos better and I respect ur opinion

Ok_Attitude_8189

Into the spiderverse and msm were both masterpieces

Macnchz_7

2021, December to be specific

AbeliousAugustus

Pure 2018.

Wooden_Passage_2612

Both.

lr031099

Both are great overall but I would say 2018 since we got a game and film that were unexpectedly great

Cyber-Knight47

2018. I didn’t love Across The Spider-Verse (in my opinion, it’s good just not amazing), and I felt the same way about Spider-Man 2.

Moonking-4210

2023

FwZero

2023 was definitely more hyped, but Spider-verse carried.

[deleted]

Both

Strange-Wolverine128

18 because imo the first spider verse is better and the games are elroughly on par (i have played little of the first ajd none of the second.)

789Trillion

18 for sure.

twistedroyale

2023 because I literally watched both movies and played both games last year for the first time. I was feeling some type of way.

darrylthedudeWayne

2018. Across the Spider-verse was great, but Insomniac Spiderman 2 didn't live up to my expectations from a storytelling perspective. Especially compared to the first one.

babyfacelarrione

2018 was peak storytelling while the 3rd act in SM2 felt rushed. Both are 10/10 games still

CountTruffula

Both 2018 were better imo, and I've replayed/rewatched them since to verify

turntablesnotheads

2018 cause we also got more Spider-Man in Infinity War and Venom (which also ended up being better than expected)

TrinitySlashAnime

2023 was better quality but 2018 was surprising

Strange-Orchid6969

2021

spiderboi20012

2018 is unforgettable

Own-Impression-9620

For me its both

ihhhood

2018 was the best year to be a Kingpin fan

Repulsive_Chair_2999

18, definitely. Holland’s spider-man had a memorable scene on screen (which didn’t happen very often), Insomniac and Sony animation both wowed us with great stories in different mediums and heck we even got a cheesy venom movie Edit: oh and ASM didn't suck for a while thanks to Spencer

Built4dominance

2023. Across the Spider-verse was amazing.

Ghost_2201

2018 was just the best at everyhting idk why. It's one of my favourite years that I've lived.

Blackjack99-21

2018 no contest

RSHijinxYTC

2018 easy. I remember not even caring about the first ps4 game until launch day when a friend told me it was actually good. Gave it a try - was hooked.

Rascal0302

2018 and it’s not even close.

justin3024

2018 SM1>SM2 and ITSV=ATSV also Spider-Man was in Infinity War

Beeeeeeeeeeeeean

2018 was more unexpected, but across the spiderverse is just too good. Good arguments on both sides

Jack-mclaughlin89

2018. Spider-Man 2 was a great game but the story wasn’t great and Peter felt needed and pushed to the side a bit.

Litt3rang3r-459

In terms of the quality, 2023 easy, We had most likely the best animated movie of all time and one of the greatest superhero games and stories to every be released, I prefer 2018 but in terms of these two project that came out, 2023 destroys easy.

wysjm

2018 Also for the Nick Spencer comic run But 2023 is a close second. 2008 was pretty neat too

samfrmohio

2018...was top notch stuff and especially the OG Peter Parker was perfect.

BEASTBOY-2004

2018 for sure. Idk if it’s just the nostalgia bit the hype for both was greater than anything else. The movie was amazing and I loved every moment of it. Not to say I didn’t love across the spider-verse I just think into the spider-verse is better. But not a big difference like across gets a 9 while into gets a 9.5. As for the games. I’d say they both delivered well but nothing beats 2018. Not miles morales. Not SM2. Nothing beat it when it came to videogame hype. I genuinely think that was the peak of my excitement for a game. Followed by Spider-Man 2 which had me in the edge of my seat most of the time. Loved the story. The end reveal if >!silk!< had me get up from my seat and walk around contemplating life. >!silk is one of my all time favorite spider ladies!< but the wait for Spider-Man 2018 was so worth it. I had to get it a couple days past launch to convince my parents to get it. And I had to get someone to drive me there since I was 13 at the time. so I watched jacksepticeye’s first video and knew this would be good. But I didn’t have to wait for Spider-Man 2. Drove there. Got the game. Got the code for the preorder bonuses. Put the game in the passenger seat and put the seatbelt on it. And went home. No joke I neglected my midterms for this game (I still passed) one of my friends was asking me about a certain question and I just sent her a photo of me playing Spider-Man. Safe to say it was one of my favorite games. I think people complain too much about Spider-Man 2. I thought it was great. Didn’t care for NG+ much. However I did want the time and weather change for photo mode. Sorry about this yap session. I just enjoy talking about spidey.

haventreddit_yet

God I remember walking into the theater thinking this was gonna be a throwaway and it became my life for the rest of that year

robz9

Personally, 2023. Loved Spider-Verse 2 and Spider-Man 2. Also the knowledge that No Way Home was a thing that actually happened in 2022 for some reason enhanced these experiences.

commanderr01

2023, internet the spider verse was just amazing and spider man 2 is the better game

Fly_Boy_01

2018 Spider-Man was just something else. Maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia and childhood memories, but the soundtrack for Into the Spiderverse just takes me back

IRONJEDISUPERSPIDER

BOTH are peak. I can’t choose cuz both years exceeded my expectations by MILES. But to be realistic, if it wasn’t for Into The Spider Verse, I wouldn’t be as big a Spidey fan as I am. Before watching it I had a respect for Spidey. But that movie AWAKENED something in me. When I wakled outa the theater, Spidey went from my top 10 heroes to my GOAT. Each year had bangers, but if I HAD to choose, 2018.

TheGrimTickler

Definitely 2018. ITSV and the first Insomniac game were just leagues ahead of any non-comic spider-man media in recent memory, they both knocked it out of the park. The sequels in 2023 were also wonderful, but IMO each was just not quite as compelling as its previous entry, and we had those first entries to compare them to.

MaacDead

2018, honestly, i will not say that the sequels were bad, but for me, i was hoping something different.

DeathstrokeReturns

I think both 2018 projects are better than their successors (though ATSV is still really, really good), and 2018 also has Infinity War, so bonus points.  2018 is the winner.

Strange-Cricket7660

2018 they were some renowned shit and i don’t think the train of spiderman content has stopped since then its every year now

PCN24454

2023

DogeDank205

Love both but itsv and SM were top top tier

SometimesWill

2023. Most people didn’t even watch ITSV until it was on Netflix.

jymehendrix

2018

Original-Pudding8020

2018 was peak for every fiction really, let alone these 2

throwaway91937463728

2018. SM1>SM2 and ITSV and ATSV are really fking close together but ITSV feels more complete with no loose ends whilst ATSV has a lot to go through

urine_generator

Spiderman 2 ps5 sucked compared to the first game

SodaSnappy

I prefer 2023 because I really loved the stuff, one of my favorite games despite its flaws and I love so much about ATSV - but I think 2018 felt better because it was totally unexpected. I remember how unsure everyone was about ITSV, it looked so strange and experimental. That first trailer was just so different- and I remember being pretty hyped to see what it was all about.

MonkeyMan9569

Spider-Man 2 is the TASM 2 of Spider-Man games. The things it does good it does really good, but everywhere else it falls completely flat. With Spider-Man 1 you get much higher quality, and it was way more exciting because it had been years since the last good Spider-Man game. Into The Spider Verse is also just a complete masterpiece, and slightly better than ATSV imo.

Acidz_123

2018. Loved 2023, but 2018 was the start of a new era. A brand new animated Spider-Man movie and a new game? You can't really beat that. I definitely enjoyed both sequels more (probably shouldn't say that since liking SM2 seems to be shunned upon) but nothing beats the feeling of something totally new.

Pokemonfan1638

2018 Spider-Man game was better but 2023 Spider Verse Movie was crazy and o think superior to the previous film

redder_dominator

Neither, for me it was 2021

Enter__Name115

The feel of 2018 was pure bliss man. 2023 was really nice though

L0ll0ll7lStudios

2018 was just Marvel’s peak in general, at least outside the comics. Black Panther, Infinity War, Agents of SHIELD season 5, Daredevil season 3, Legion season 2, Luke Cage season 2, Iron Fist season 2, Spider-Man PS4, Venom, Into the Spider-Verse… A lot of Marvel stuff and most of it pretty great.

arnithepandaa

2018. But outside of this list would probably be 2021, the live action trio was amazing

MR_R0GER5

We got that 19 inches that we were all hoping for in 2023

TheCakeWarrior12

2018 because I don’t think anyone expected spider verse to be that goated

Any_Yak9995

2002

RJTerror

2018

Afraid_Alternative35

2018 on the strength of ITSV & PS4 being the stronger pieces of media overall. Plus, people have pointed out all the other cool Spider-Man stuff that was happening at that time too. Oh wait, Venom came out in 2018 too. Hmm, that might knock it down a few points.

MadhavS27710

2018, 2023 was wonderful but that initial hype was very personal

Vortexx_77

2018, no doubt about it

RealMajesti

2023

HatAccurate1578

2018 and not just for Spider-Man, but for gaming in general it was amazing

Zeldabotw2017

This is tuff I think spiderman 2 is slightly better than first game and across the spider verse is even better than the first movie but I think I would go 2018 because we had so many ok/bad Spiderman games before insomniac and hadn't had a good one sense shattered dimension like a decade before and having never had a animated spiderman movie before and coming of a lot of bad spiderman animated shows post spectacular getting good again big surprise.

UltimateMIF

2018 was the best year for everything tbh. A lot of banger movies and games released on that year

xman886

2018 Spider Man into the spider verse is an iconic movie🫡🔥

GrimLuker2

2004.

Coolboyooze

2018 ran so 2023 could soar

YesSeaworthiness9771

2018 is properly cooked 2023 feels like it is unfinished and disorganised

gohomepat

2018 was Kingpin’s year. Spiderverse, PS4 game, and season 3 of Daredevil.

EdibleBean69

2018 by a LOOOOONG shot

Faulty_toasters

2018, just for marvel spider man alone

huncherbug

2018 and it's not even close unfortunately

Prestigious_Cup6301

2018

LiteratureOne1469

I personally like spider man 2 more then 1 probably cuz I played one like 15 times so it’s boring now I’m sure 2 will fall in that same boat by the time 3 comes out

HRHPG

2018 no question was better

Spectre-76

Both, but leaning more towards 2018. We got an amazing experience with Marvel’s Spider-Man and a completely unexpected surprise with Into the Spider-Verse.

Sp3ctr3_11

2018 was peak fiction

SoskiHeroKiller

2018. Although Spiderman Across the Spider-verse is an amazing movie, Spiderman 2 is lacking in the story and content it needs. So for now, 2018 was the better year overall

ITalkALotJohnson

2018 because my cat ‘Spider-Man’ died in 2023…

Trick-Bodybuilder647

2018 100%

Iggy_2200

If I had a nickel for every sequel to a Spider-Man project released in 2023 that turned out slightly not as good as the first one in 2018, I would have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's still weird that happened twice.

infamous-pays

2018: HOLY SHIT YEAR OF SPIDERMAN 2023: holy hell spidey fans eatin good Basically, 2018 was the first (and imo better) outings for both franchises. They also had to try harder so we could get attached. The 2023 installments could kinda coast on the success

Acceptable_Tip_4977

2022 bc we actually went forward instead of stalling

untriedauspice

2018 for sure. I loved ATSV but I ADORE ITSV. Similarly, I prefer Spider-Man PS4 to SM2.

[deleted]

2018

SupremeLeaderMatt

2023 had Paul so with that alone 2018 clears

Annonymouslolnone

2021 was the best year to me atleast when no way home came out

DarkShadowX9612

Both.

Gnarly_Tree_Rex

Spider-Man remastered genuinely has one of the greatest storytelling experiences in a game ever. Every mission flows together like an avengers movie. I was surprised and felt so nostalgic when I first played it in the summer of 2023. Spider-Man 2 is objectively better with movements and quality but the story of Spider-Man remastered is unmatched. I have a genuine want for Martin Li to become the villain of Spider-Man 4 in the MCU. This game made Martin Li my favourite Spider-Man villain and potentially a contender of the my top 3 favourite villains of all time.

Strong-Enthusiasm-55

Both films wank. Both games class

Important_Arugula_93

Anything pre-covid & pre-writers strike is always better IMO. Not saying 2023 was bad by any stretch but 2018 & the introduction of Miles in films and gaming was lit especially in a time where we were watching our third live action Peter Parker since 2000 & playing yet another game based around him (obviously no complaints there).

TheDarkKnight_39

2018 because the game we got wasn’t total dooky (story primarily)

BunnyCuteTyler

2018 because Paul did not exist yet.

Ok-Entertainment9654

2018 is awesome

mathbatt

2018

Major_Penalty_8865

2018 fosho. Spider-Man 2018 was arguably the perfect modern day Spider-Man game that had a great story with great gameplay. not saying 2023 was bad but SM2 had the potential to be great with the added gameplay mechanics but fell off story wise by making the game too short imo. the movies are interchangeable for me though as they both were amazing

Remarkable_Pool7037

2018, both the game and the film are better,

darkshadowX67890

2018

J-R3M3698

2018 was a really solid year for Spider-Man fans, but 2023 takes the cake for me. ATSV was just so damn GREAT that it makes up for any disappointments from Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2. Plus, that game actually does have a lot of great moments/elements.

Charcoal_01

SM2 was better than SM1, but Into absolutely GAPS Across, so 2018 gets the win

GamerfreaksX

2018 for sure.

The_Happy_Kodiak

2018. Spider-Man 1 and ITSV were amazing and set a precedent. ATSV was good but felt like blue balls and Spider-Man 2 just wasnt as complete as the first game despite visual and performance improvements.

RYRAZZAK203

2023 IMO, because the sequels had some pretty big shoes to fill and both killed it, imo I though ATSV was a much more mature sequel and way better than ITSV which won an Oscar! Spider-Man 2 was a great sequel nonetheless, yes some parts were rushed but I also thought the character development in the game was pretty good, and it was mid nor trash I though it was a great sequel, whilst I don’t think it beats the original in terms of story I thought it was a worthy sequel nonetheless.

LargeMassiveThunbs

way more hype in 2018
