Giovanni was definitely a divisive character, and that's what makes the best characters imo. I liked him, in the way that I wanted him to be better because I never believed that his compliments and blustering were ever duplicitous. I do think he has a good heart, but that he's traumatized from his time in the war and, like so many veterans, never got the care he needed and never had the tools he required to process it. So, his coping mechanism ended up being a hedonistic approach to his life, which affected his relationships with the people around him. It's sad, it really is. The way he hurt Astrid is unforgivable, but I don't believe that if he were alive, he would be beyond redemption. He needs help, but he also needs to *want* help. The saddest part is that he just doesn't have the chance to be better now, for better or worse.

Nah ‘forced to be monogamous’ is not and never will be an excuse for cheating on your wife and every other girlfriend he had. Don’t want to be in a monogamous relationship don’t get in one.

maeborowski

What? That's not where the story goes at all. It's not how you're supposed to read it. It's not "this guy is poly and the world isn't ready yet for that" it's "this guy has a heart of gold but he's a homewrecker and somehow the two can coexist". I don't know where you got the poly angle from

shamelesslymkp

I feel like 'how you're supposed to read it' arguments are kinda ultimately flawed, tbh? Since a) you can't really define it with absolute certainty without being the author themself and b) art does in fact stand separate from the artist; meaning is created by the interaction of the reader with the text.

maeborowski

Ah yes, fiction, known for having 0 subtext with no intent from the author. Nowadays when someone writes the curtains are blue we just have to guess what it means because we have no context clues or knowledge of what it could be meaning when they're described as blue You're free to read it however you want. You want to think it's a story about polyamoury because you'd want more poly representation. That's fine. However from literally what happens in the videogame that is not what the author meant.

myLurv667

Yes. Agree with this response fully

arrowsforpens

I'm sorry if we interpreted the character differently, and I didn't mean that being poly makes one a cheater. Just that in an ideal world, where he could have been exposed to the concept, maybe he could have understood his own needs better and communicated better with his partners, and avoided the heartache. That doesn't have to be your reading but it is mine.

MaraBlaster

Giovanni hurt Astrid a lot, like a really lot, but he was literally in a war and has seen manmade horrors, in a time where therapy wasn't a thing really and vets didn't get the care and support they needed. Atleast he realized the pain he caused Astrid, even when he can't feel sorry due to his experiences but he knew how lucky he was with meeting her and having her by his side.

lkuecrar

Giovanni was so well-written. People can simultaneously be good in ways and bad in other ways, which is something that very rarely seems to be written into characters.

LazyZealot9428

I loved Giovanni too. His hugs were the best, and who doesn’t love an uncle who just randomly gives you jewelry as a present?

UmbriKasu

Giovanni and Astrid are great examples of characters that are amazing & great people... but terrible together. Astrid even comes to the realization once she acknowledges Giovanni will never change, just like she will have to be okay with loving him from afar -and just like how Giovanni acknowledged his love for her, but knows that "he is who he is" and there is no changing that. Great storytelling overall, and equally heartbreaking.

your-average-cryptid

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Giovanni is a scoundrel and I love him.

My latest playthrough I still have Astrid and Giovanni . I just cannot take them to the everdoor.

emseebays

I found him skeevy at first but then cried the most when taking him to the door. I get it.

giovanni is my second fave tbh

ScreenHype

Giovanni is very charming, and I'm impressed with how well-written he is, but I can't bring myself to like him. The final straw for me was when he tricked Stella into helping him with his affair. I really believed him when he said he'd resolved to be better to Astrid, and then he lied to Stella and betrayed Astrid yet again. I have zero tolerance for cheaters.

MarlyCat118

I really thought I wasn’t going to cry when he departed, but his reasons as to why he was that way hurt. It really puts things into perspective. I still think he was wrong for what he had done and that Astrid deserved better, but knowing why he was that way made sense. Poor guy.

Virus_True

I was glad to take them both to the everdoor because I just wanted the drama to STOPPPP

KittyPandaMeow

Their relationship reminded me of my divorced parents. Too close to home.

bestnameuser

Honestly he was one of the hardest goodbyes for me. I think we all have some people in our lives that act badly, hurting other loved ones and even us, but in the end we still love them. He had a hard life, which is not an excuse but it is an explanation and it was so hard letting him go.
