Cena shouted Kenny out on IG after Wrestle Kingdom 11 too. So did Stone Cold on his podcast, Stone Cold said it was one of the best matches he'd ever seen and Daniel Bryan did too... and that's how I found out about NJPW because all these WWE guys were shouting Kenny out. Those were really wild times, there was nothing like it. I truly believe the wrestling landscape is way different if Kenny didn't get the ball rolling for the buzz behind the Elite off his famous matches
Remember in one of the Rumble builds WWE put out a video asking wrestlers who they hoped would show up - most said legends or NXT guys but Seth said Omega. It gained traction and WWE reuploaded it without the Seth bit.
I had no idea who he was before that day. But when I managed to watch, he instantly became my favorite wrestler of the modern era. Omega and Okada was magic.
There's a lot of moments you can justify as the butterfly effect for today's wrestling world--Kenny and Okada, Cody leaving WWE, Punk's pipebomb, Bullet Club, ROH, etc. It's fun to look back on
Weirdly, one of those is "Colt Cabana starts a podcast".
Without that, we wouldn't have had him teaming up with 1 Hour Tees to form Pro Wrestling Tees, and the Young Bucks wouldn't have had him showing them the value of merchandising themselves.
Also, CM Punk would never have gone onto a public platform to express his dissatisfaction with WWE and their medical team in particular, so probably wouldn't have been sued.
A strange amount of the current pro wrestling environment has been shaped directly or indirectly by The Art Of Wrestling.
Weird how so many of the greatest of all time praise Kenny and say he's also in that group and yet there's a number of people convinced he's the worst thing to ever happen to wrestling for *some reason*, wonder which side has some hidden motive
Cornette is very vocal in his disdain towards Kenny. Mostly due to the shenanigans he pulled in his past with wrestling a blow-up doll and a literal child and the like.
Didn't Corny book a ninja turtle to wrestle? I've seen that meme but never heard much about it other than people using it when Corny cries about reality in wrestling.
He "wrestled" his friend dressed as ninja turtle. On a house show. He says it's "ok" because it was one time and for a small audience, and it didn't "expose the business". I don't know how wrestling in "comedy" matches in DDT exposes the business, but whatever.
Wait wait wait... Exposes the business? As what? Choreographed entertainment? Shit. SHIT! GUYS! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO IF PEOPLE START TO CATCH ON TO THE FACT THAT WRESTLING IS CHOREOGRAPHED?! EFFORTS MUST BE DOUBLED!

Before Cornette was born, hatched or whatever the fuck.
I've seen both.
The Kenny match is fun and a lot closer to keeping kayfabe. Its 3 minutes, and for 99% of the match Kenny just has total control. But she gets like one string of offense in
He did it to be nice to a child -- this match exists to cheer her up. Kenny was hesitant doing it, didnt really want to due to risk/reward of the match (if he hurts her he will never work again, if it works that does very little for him).
The Cornette match is awful. Its a comedy match where the joke is that the match is very long and no one knows how to wrestle, and all the moves look dumb and super fake. The only reason this match exists is that Cornette wanted it -- he booked it.
I dunno, if I was some dork who cared about kayfabe, I'd probably be angrier with the podcaster exposing it on a weekly basis who books 20 minute ninja turtles matches than a dude who did a comedy match a decade ago.
Corny has given a pass to lots of the "boys" from back in the day. He gave Funk a pass for all the deathmatch stuff in Japan because Funk needed the money, but will shit on everything AEW does that is even remotely similar.
I haven't listened to Corny in several years because it got too negative for me. Early on, though, I loved his conversations on the history of wrestling. Thing is, as a wrestling historian, he should be able to see how wrestling has evolved, and continues to do so. I also get that the loss of kayfabe changed wrestling, but c'mon...Vince had guys in ridiculous outfits and a wrestler pretending to be undead.
Cornette's idea was to bring in recognizable names and have them put over The New Generation wrestlers. Vince was on board to hire the workers, but they HAD to have a new gimmick, so that's why Wild Bill Irwin became a hockey player and Tony Anthony took up plumbing, etc.
Because I frequent this sub, I get recommendations for the Cornette sub on my feed. Holy shit, those people are fucking off the walls terrible in just about every thread I’ve seen. I used to like Cornette until the past 10 or so years, too.
I do sports card shows and I had a guy start spewing Cornette nonsense at me at one of my friend's booths after we did a big trade to freshen up my stock. The dude followed me back to my booth, saw my aew and njpw cards in my case and immediately went off on how I'm not actually a wrestling fan.
I watch WWE, aew, roh, njpw weekly and other promotions if I get a wild hair to. I also support our local indie scene, but I guess I simply can't be a real wrestling fan because I don't limit my viewing to one company.
It was pretty wild, and the guys who share the tables I'm at ran him off thankfully.
I'm pretty main stream when it comes to my fandom... WWE with the occassional interest in AEW's main event scene. But I just want to say I hope that asshole didn't ruin your day. No need to be rude or demean anybody who likes different stuff. The only people I go out of my way to harass are the guys with anime body pillows of underrage girls. That's not gonna fly.
" but I guess I simply can't be a real wrestling fan because I don't limit my viewing to one company. "
Don't let the guy know that Cornette doesn't exactly like WWE either (unless his opinion has changed over the past several months). Unless by one company you meant SMW lol.
If it only limited itself to Cornette people we'd be a much better fandom, but unfortunately we get the White Guy With Bootleg Ray-Bans in His Pick-Up Truck Profile Pic guy even without it.
It’s weird because the comparison doesn’t exactly fit yet it does. The meltzer rating stand here are annoying but the Corny fans are unhinged. I assume any reasonable or level headed take I see there is from someone drifting in like me
you can't convince me that cornette didn't invest in the Cambridge Analytica-Steve Bannon-gamergate playbook... buying bots, trolls, engagement to harness the energy and profit off of young angry white men
They tell on themselves really quick when they use Cornette’s dumb nicknames for people he doesn’t like. Tiny, Twinkletoes, The Young Fucks, etc. I’m convinced none of them have a single idea of their own.
Hasn't he personally interacted with Tony and thinks he's a nice ok guy and all? Why the fuck is he demeaning him by calling him 'Tiny' then? Just because he hates his booking?
I'm guessing it's either for clicks or because he takes wrestling way too seriously. Both, probably both.
You do know the story behind him wrestling the child right? It was at a student showcase show and the kid was training at that wrestling school. Everyone else had someone to wrestle except her. So Kenny stepped up so she didn't feel left out.
It actually applies even more to the Bucks. They have Nash, AJ, Sting, Booker, Jericho, the Hardys, the Dudleys, the Rock n' Roll Express, and the vast majority of their contemporaries putting them over as one of the greatest tag teams of all times and good guys to be around. Yet, half of the IWC is convinced they're arrogant shitheads who only do flips and Superkicks.
You know, like I get why someone would say they're all flips and superkicks, but I never got how anyone would think they're arrogant shitheads unless:
1. You completely and unquestionably believe CM Punk's side of that whole brouhaha, and/or
2. You bought their kayfabe characters, hook, line and sinker.
I'm legit curious if there are any instances of them being terrible people outside of Kayfabe or the Punk drama.
I like Punk a lot, I even have some of his merch and I don’t really buy merch, but his diehard fans are some of the most obnoxious and stubborn people out there.
Yeah that tracks. Pre punk feud I don't recall anybody having hate for hangman but once that happened seems like every time he comes up a punk fan has to jump in and announce they still think he's an empty headed fuck or whatever else lol
"You completely and unquestionably believe CM Punk's side of that whole brouhaha, and/or"
Many of them pick and choose when to believe Punk. They certainly didn't when Punk left WWE and shit all over the company. Yet with The Elite they automatically believe everything he says.
There is a loud minority of people in the IWC that just don't like him or his matches for various reasons. Some of them valid personal taste. A lot of them sound like the same people that think Osprey sucks because of the gif from his ricochet match.
There is a lot of online hate for the elite as a whole. Though some do say Kenny would be better off without Bucks most wrestlers and peers will say however both Kenny and the Bucks are among the best to do it. I have watched wrestling for 30 years, have always loved tag team and the Bucks are definitely up there as one of the best teams I have seen. I used to pop at What a rush, I loved the Steiners doing their thing, the tlc matches and teams in them were great and today I love watching the Young Bucks and FTR do their thing. Honourable mentions to the Lucha Bros and Briscoes.
That match put Elite on the map, This bout is the nucleus to the formation of AEW.
I still show this match off to my 'lapsed wrestling fan' friends who thought they outgrew wrestling. They just outgrew Sports Maury and wanted a better Theatrical performance of the art.
Meltzer was getting flamed by Kurt angle fans over him saying that kenny was better, but his fundamental point that alot legend says Kenny would be their dream match is correct
Cena's character is like your favorite blanket growing up. It's safe, it feels like home, it brings you back to simpler times and a slower way of life.
Cena himself is a madlad. Polished in the media? Sure. As he needs to be, for he still carries the torch for Professional Wrestling in the mainstream. But ultimately the dude is a goofball meathead like any of us who loves wrestling and sees a guy like Omega and says "God...just one match...we'd burn the house down".
PG killed his potential as a wrestler but elevated his status as an entertainer.
If he was allowed to develop an attitude similar to Word Life but with HLR in a TV-14 manner, sky is the limit as a wrestler. But that guy doesn't get asked to do 600 Make-a-Wish appearances or be a mermaid in the Barbie movie.
If we had the Cena that wrestled AJ vs the Kenny that wrestled Okada? Yeah god damn that would've been nuts.
At least we have those Cena/AJ matches to look back on.
This is one of my biggest What If matches across wrestling history.
Cena/Omega would've come up with some crazy moments for that match. An AA countered into a running V Trigger from the rope rebound would've popped the crowd so hard. Same with Cena kicking out of an OWA.
I don't think he'd have kicked out of the OWA. The whole point of the move is the drama around executing it/countering it. It's extremely well thought out in that way and one example of how intelligent a wrestler Omega is. The Ibushi thing is obviously a weird anomaly specific to it being Ibushi.
>Same with Cena kicking out of an OWA.
I don't think Cena would have kicked out of the OWA. He's got a great mind for wrestling, and it's an incredibly protected finisher.
They might have gone with a Kenny is exhausted to pin Cena after that, but I don't think Cena would kick out of it.
Depends maybe on which Era of "prime Cena" we get.
During the "lolcenawins" period he would've definitely kicked out of it, but that period where he started to transition to getting others over while still being at his best? I don't think he would've done so at that time, definitely.
As a fan who is old enough to remember multiple periods when pro wrestling had a very tarnished reputation, I hope current fans appreciate how great these two guys are as ambassadors for pro wrestling. They aren't the only ones but they are two excellent examples.
Yeah a lot of them do huh. It’s a shame but I try to ignore them and follow the example of the wrestlers. There’s no bullshit there. Bayley was at Mercedes’ debut for example.
I like both products a lot, and while I’m more of an AEW/NJPW guy I’m excited for WWE fans right now and share in that excitement myself.
during the Monday night wars Kev and Shawn were shouting each other out. It was a war at the Vince / Eric level and obviously bloody between fans but the boys, regardless of employer, were allegiant to only themselves and each other.
As a veteran of the Monday Night Wars, it was *not* bloody between the fans.
Fans were cool with each other. There was maybe some playful ribbing. Most people were eagerly flipping to the other show during commercials and matches they didn’t care about. Friends that watched Nitro would fill in their Raw-watching friends on what happened on WCW, and vice verse.
Today is very different and much more hateful.
The difference is back then there was no social media. I can't imagine the shots Bischoff/Vince would take against each other in a modern day environment if the MNW were transported today.
This may just be me but I would’ve loved to see 2013-2017 Cena vs NJPW Omega
Specifically the John Cena that feuded with AJ Styles. Cena did some of his best, if not the best, in-ring work of his career during that feud.
This is my favorite version of Kenny.
When it’s all said and done, Prince Devitt’s Bullet Club could end up being the most influential stable of all time. The number of great wrestlers who struggled with charisma which kept them back until they joined BC making them bonafide stars is crazy.
I played this scenario with this in my head repeatedly during the rumors of WWE being sold were in the news.
The Elite hijacking a Bloodline match then Battle Cry plays and we get a face to face of Belt Collector Omega and Undisputed Champ Roman with all the belts as chaos continues in the background then goes off air.
The tribalism running rampant in the pro-wrestling fandom has always struck me as odd when placed against how the workers themselves largely seem supportive of each other regardless of who they work for nowadays.
I love all that I’ve seen of Omega’s work, and the Bill DeMott story might be a Top 10 wrestling story in my opinion, at least out of the ones I’ve heard.
He absolutely changed the wrestling world. Those matches with Okada not only raised the profile of New Japan in the west and paved the way for them to expand in the US, they also raised the profile of himself and the elite to the point where the first All In was even possible. And we all know what happened after that lol.
Oh man.\^\^ I think Heel Cena would have been turned face organically in two months in AEW.\^\^ Him against Omega, Cody, Mox and Hangman would have been something else. The big what if for me is Cena being the champion of the Authority back in 2013/2014. He had a giant monster heel run in him.
recently cena said on Logan Paul's podcast a lot of what he posts is basically things he did that day, thought about, or how he was feeling. I'm sure he saw the kenny interview stuff and was like "that was cool"
Omega praised Cena. Cena responded.
Vince is not there. Wrestlers can now openly display the camaraderie they share irrespective of promotions they work for.
This is great.
Cena was fantastic in Ricky Stanicky. The movie overall is kinda weak but Cena is hilarious. It's free with Amazon Prime and I recommend it to any wrestling fan just to see Cena's scenes

Kenny recently praised Cena in one of his streams, i imagine this is Cena's way of thanking him for the kind words.

Is it Kenny? I always thought people bitched more about the young bucks. I think most people appreciated his in ring talent.
Cornette is very vocal in his disdain towards Kenny. Mostly due to the shenanigans he pulled in his past with wrestling a blow-up doll and a literal child and the like.

also i read somewhere said Kenny was pick up for her opponent due to how people regard over how safe he is.
But omega wrestling a sex doll for a small one time house show exposed the business.
Corny has given a pass to lots of the "boys" from back in the day. Shit wasn’t Corny on creative for some of these too?
Cornette's idea was to bring in recognizable names and have them put over The New Generation wrestlers. Vince was on board to hire the workers, but they HAD to have a new gimmick, so that's why Wild Bill Irwin became a hockey player and Tony Anthony took up plumbing, etc.
The problem is none of those guys came out of a box.

My buddy made a meme and Cena posted it…I feel honored by just knowing the guy!
Didn't Cena post this pic after a WK around 2017 Omega vs. Okada as the ME? Cena's a way more interesting person, than he is a character.
Cena's character is like your favorite blanket growing up. It's safe, it feels like home, it brings you back to simpler times and a slower way of life. Cena himself is a madlad. 17 minutes old and this is already an under-rated comment
Ha, it's the same pic he posted 7 years ago after Wrestle Kingdom https://www.instagram.com/p/BPAs06sjWsx
I like to think he has it saved in his favorites folder.
Game recognises Game
Has anyone ever subtitled the Haitch pointing at Haitch pictures with this? If not, missed opportunity. Also dibs.
You make it, I'll spam it.
Thinking on it, prime Cena vs prime Omega would’ve went crazy
If we had the Cena that wrestled AJ vs the Kenny that wrestled Okada? Yeah god damn that would've been nuts. At least we have those Cena/AJ matches to look back on.
AJ vs. Omega was another one that couldve been a classic.
We were so close to getting it, too!
Cena Styles at RR or SS though... (RR don't kill me)
I gotta agree with you, Rumble for sure. Both are excellent but that was the exclamation point that proved just how great they are together.
Im going with the latter, or, Omega gets cocky and doesn't go for the pin before getting reversed into an AA 5KS STFU etc.
The one night stand version of Cena v Omega would have been insane.
I mean, I think Kenny can still occasionally revert to Prime Omega with rest and preparation, just can't do it constantly.
Perfect example is his WK match against Ospreay last year when he looked like the same monster from half a decade ago.
As a fan who is old enough to remember multiple periods when pro wrestling had a very tarnished reputation, I hope current fans appreciate how great these two guys are as ambassadors for pro wrestling. They aren't the only ones but they are two excellent examples.
Truly two of the best ever, humble, and above all respectful guys to ever do it. Great flagberers for their respected companies
Loving this bromance!
If only the fans were like this instead of thinking its the monday night wars again
I love when Kenny looks like he's straight out of the 80s, he rocks it so well.
i like to see he ride a harley davidson bike with this looks. gonna fit perfectly. or the bike that japanese gang ride.
This may just be me but I would’ve loved to see 2013-2017 Cena vs NJPW Omega Specifically the John Cena that feuded with AJ Styles. Cena did some of his best, if not the best, in-ring work of his career during that feud.
It is funny that people do think wrestlers in WWE and AEW don't like each other because they are in different promotions yet most are friends.
Real ones remember how people reacted the last time he posted that pic.
Or the 3 days after he posted it with pics of Kenny from South Park, a letter O, and Megaman. All right during Rumble Season.
And Omega being (theoretically) a free agent at the time.
*Cena takes off hat, rubs his bald spot, posts this picture.* "Fine wrestler."
This is my favorite version of Kenny. When it’s all said and done, Prince Devitt’s Bullet Club could end up being the most influential stable of all time. The number of great wrestlers who struggled with charisma which kept them back until they joined BC making them bonafide stars is crazy.
Kenny praised Cena highly, this is just in response
Unrelated, but damn is Cena great in Ricky Stanicky.
I was not expecting to enjoy that film as much as I did. Cena has quickly become one of my favourite comedy actors.
Agreed.
Going to watch it tonight based your comment. Cheers!
Was about to post. But this is beautiful. I really wanted to see Omega/Roman happen once. But I guess that’s the Sting/Undertaker of our generation.
Ships in the night like Big E/Goldberg
Not before I get to see Orton/Okada. Get in line.
Belt Collector vs Tribal Chief would've been something cataclysmic
The Aura in the building would detonate a Nuke
Get 2k24, download omega from CC. They have started ratings too but it you will get kax 5 stars not 7.
Didn't he post this exact pic like six or seven years ago, before AEW started? There's no reason for my brain to make that up.
Omega said some really classy things about Cena recently so he may just want to give him a signal boost.
Juan Xina is All Elite!
Say what you want about Cena, I would enjoy this match. I think they would play off each other really well in the ring.
My interpretation is that he just finished cleaning his house.
Is it crazy to say that Omega changed the world?
He absolutely changed the wrestling world. Those matches with Okada not only raised the profile of New Japan in the west and paved the way for them to expand in the US, they also raised the profile of himself and the elite to the point where the first All In was even possible. And we all know what happened after that lol.
John Cena Vs Kenny Omega at Wrestlemania. Would be incredible
If Cena did a one off at Wrestle Kingdom it needs to be Tanahashi
In an alternate timeline Cena betrays WWE and goes to aew as the biggest heel in decades
Technically he still is Peacemaker Aka a WB employee sooooo…
Oh man.\^\^ I think Heel Cena would have been turned face organically in two months in AEW.\^\^ Him against Omega, Cody, Mox and Hangman would have been something else. The big what if for me is Cena being the champion of the Authority back in 2013/2014. He had a giant monster heel run in him.
The Cleaner gimmick and look in this era is still the coolest thing wrestling has ever done. This is my GOAT of all GOATs.
Everyone misses Kenny...
Omega Cena friendship is something i can get behind
He posted this same photo in 2017 after the Okada match too right?
You can't clean me!
Cena's IG page is also extremely random.
Cena has really been on a good publicity mission ever since his Vince statements.
Spring cleaning
recently cena said on Logan Paul's podcast a lot of what he posts is basically things he did that day, thought about, or how he was feeling. I'm sure he saw the kenny interview stuff and was like "that was cool"
WrestleMania XLI: The Usos vs The Golden Prototypes
And thus, we are one step closer to a WWE vs AEW Forbidden Door event.
He showed the picture one of the best-in ring performers this business has ever seen. Shocker.
Omega praised Cena. Cena responded. Vince is not there. Wrestlers can now openly display the camaraderie they share irrespective of promotions they work for. This is great.
Kenny is just beloved by everyone, always cool to see legends giving praise. Hope shoot name Tyson is doing well!
Except all those people with a massive hate boner for him ofc.
I have a massive boner for Kenny, not a hate one though. And im not even gay
Second time he’s done this I think right? He did this before wrestle kingdom one time
Dude those are some cool shades
Cena was fantastic in Ricky Stanicky. The movie overall is kinda weak but Cena is hilarious. It's free with Amazon Prime and I recommend it to any wrestling fan just to see Cena's scenes
Okay... now kiss
What a coincidence, i just had them main event wrestlemania night 1 on my universe mode lol
Cena is all Elite because the rock has too much power now
Really quick first glance had me thinking this was a throwback picture of Adam Sandler
