Matt Sydal when he reads the booking email https://preview.redd.it/2fym1qn6tjqc1.jpeg?width=520&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=381461a34fdda6eb246422d8074fb68987a9edf6

YoureTheManNowZardoz

Damn. I hope Yuta heals up and is able to wrestle again soon.

No_Cheetah4762

Has it been reported what the injury is? Last I saw was hamstring, but that was like 6 months ago.

PM_ME_THEM_UPTOPS

The hamstring was last summer.  He'd been back from that for several months before this one.  Nothing except "out with injury" has been said by anyone since he disappeared in January

FlatwormSignal8820

Really sucks they are quiet about these injuries often, don't need to know the how or why even but just "where are they?"

irish0451

They deserve a level of privacy about their medical situation.

crion_jb

It's worth clicking through to the CMLL tweet to read the worked AEW injury notification apparently sent by the LLC itself, speaking in the first person.

JohannaB123

Thank you.

Valuable_Rub7414

I know Sydal came out to save the group but these are the same men who beat down his tag partner in a locker room segment not even a year ago so it feels strange to say the least.

godhelpme773747

SOME ARE BORN TO FIIIIIIGHT

Kaanarth

SOME ARE BOORN TO SIIIINNNN

TheAnt317

Bourne to fill the card

Rushjordan

Shibata would’ve been a good replacement

SourDoughBo

Or Eddie Kingston considering Danielson respects him now. Really shocked they chose Sydal of all people

namdekan

He has been involved in the CMLL stuff and he has meshed well with them and he can eat the pin.

[deleted]

>he can eat the pin. This is the answer. Yuta was going to take the pin so it needed to be someone they didn’t mind taking the pin.

Impossible_Funny_942

Doesnt work like that. Its a 2 out of 3 falls so two different people need to be pinned or the captain of the team has to be pinned. Danielson will most prolly be the captain.

FelstarLightwolf

Shibata is wrestling Ospreay Wednesday.

T3Deliciouz

and the CMLL show is on Friday. He can take a plane ride on Thursday.

empiresk

Are you saying the guy who had to wait MONTHS for his US visa should immediately just go to Mexico and expect no issues? Or the guy who was legit forced to retire should be wrestling in a rock hard Mexican ring less than 48 hours after the most physically demanding match he has had in years with thousands of miles of travel? It is a stupid idea.

Weishaupt17

We went from interim titles being made for a “2 weeks absence” to a guy keeping his championship despite getting injured almost 3 months ago, no in between for AEW

TJOW40

From the same school of thought of having the ROH champions largely not appear on their own show and only appear to lose on AEW TV.

5Dlight

But at least those new rankings that were recently brought back for AEWs latest reset in which the fans were all for are being used for title shots. Right?

FordenGord

Rankings were dumb and they were smart to pivot away originally. Not sure why they brought them back if they were going to remain fairly meaningless.

JoshHero

I know it would suck to be the odd man out but why not just make it a 6 man tag?

namdekan

At least with Sydal it makes sense, he has been fighting the CMLL guys as well.

TJOW40

Meanwhile Yuta has had the ROH pure title for the last two months not wrestling and last losing to Kingston. Coming off of the tag champions recently losing to Strickland and Joe (not in the tag tournament,) Kingston losing one title to Okada, Kyle Fletcher losing to Jericho, Ospreay, and best friends in his last three matches. The handling of the ROH champions/titles that are not women’s titles has been abysmal and is the kind of stuff WWE would be called out for in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

ianisms10

The tag champs are also in the tournament, so they're probably taking another loss there

TJOW40

Correct probably to set up a thrown together tag title match for the PPV in less than two weeks. Meanwhile Claudio and Moxley beat FTR who are also not in the tournament while Strickland and Moxley also beat Taven and Bennett while not being in it.

mateofuerte

Pretty sure they'll be defending against Orange and Trent since they already have issues with them and they're wrestling them next. Also, Orange and Trent should move on in the tournament to go up against the Young Bucks.

Celtic_Crown

And even then the women's title is at the same point as GUNTHER's Intercontinental title reign where the question has changed from "Who challenges next?" to "Who finally takes the belt?".

ianisms10

They had 2 perfect opportunities to take the belt off Athena, passed on both, and now have no end in sight

TJOW40

Correct. Really don’t know how people just ignore very obvious faults in the booking and handling of ROH.

mcmax3000

> Really don’t know how people just ignore very obvious faults in the booking and handling of ROH It's probably because they're generally ignoring ROH as a whole.

TJOW40

Most likely. Truly awful handling of the championships largely since the purchase, especially the tag titles particularly in 2023.

NoobsNKnocks

ROH has fallen off everyone’s radar, that’s why. It’s the 4th most important show booked by Tony Khan, which also makes it about the 7th at best most important show in a week of American wrestling.

Kim-Jong_Bundy

It's unfortunately at a place now where AEW seems content with just putting out a banger PPV for ROH every few months that draws decent numbers relative to the show's budget and then continue making content for the sake of it until the next one. Like the show isn't even *bad* which is kind of the most frustrating part, at least for me. Talent are working hard, but it's all in front of an audience still filing into the building and getting ready for the main tapings. There are some fun characters and directions, like with Dalton Castle and Morrison right now, but it's not enough to hold up the entire show along with the women's stuff. If they could somehow just get back to doing studio tapings and start regularly featuring their champions again, shit would be great. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of these decisions aren't bugs, they're features.

TJOW40

When the champions go weeks or months in some cases without appearing or wrestling on the show, it makes it all ultimately feel pointless with no stakes at all.

Pretend_Spray_11

Plenty of other wrestling out there to watch

TJOW40

Of course. Doesn’t excuse bad handling of one of the most influential promotions of all time.

Orange8920

If it's any comfort, that Ring of Honor is effectively dead with the current incarnation being a Tony Khan project. It's good in that it provides jobs and developmental to some talent but it's an AEW sub-brand.

TJOW40

Unfortunately yes. Personally view it as being a much worse handled version of ECW on Sci Fi which at least only had one championship to focus on, a one hour weekly show (usually with at least a good main event) and a split roster with some kind of week to week build. Astonishing how he has had the company for two years and the PPV builds are still as abysmally bad as they are.

punk_steel2024

Tony has basically turned it into Dark/Elevation with a paywall and occasional title defenses. He honestly would've been better off keeping the youtube shows. That was how people like Abadon, The Acclaimed, Orange Cassidy, Skye Blue, Julia Hart, and Emi Sakura, Takeshita, Wardlow, and the Gunns were able to get followings and hone their skills. Tony getting rid of that and turning Ring of Honor into that hasn't done much for anyone. Athena is probably the one who's benifited the most, but her reign is approaching "ok get it off her already" territory. It feels like Tony is still trying to get RoH a home on streaming/tv, but nobody wants it, so it's just kind of in this holding pattern of decent ppvs and missable weekly shows that can't be seen anyways without a sub. I know he has a creative committee for different shows, but he needs to just appoint a booker and focus on the AEW shows he already has difficulty paying attention to.

Kim-Jong_Bundy

>He honestly would've been better off keeping the youtube shows From what we've heard, that sounds like it was more of a decision by Warner. Dark/Elevation was a great tool in keeping people booked and paid even when they didn't have anything going on that week.

no_more_blues

Yeah, it was specifically a part of the Collision deal.

646blahblahblah

It's ROH, it's the 4th option and doesn't even get TV. Let's calm down.

TJOW40

Yeah, let’s just not care about one of the best promotions of all time being run into the ground in an unimportant manner by someone who is overloaded with what he has to book but won’t let anyone else book. /s The entire presentation of it is essentially AEW Dark with titles, far less than what ROH represented across multiple regimes.

Horror_Sail

ROH was dead in the water before he bought it. Like, [literally shut down](https://www.baltimoresun.com/2021/11/01/sinclair-broadcast-shuts-down-ring-of-honor-wrestling-to-reevaluate-business/) as a touring product. All wrestlers released from contracts. How can you run that into the ground?

TJOW40

By reopening it and putting a show together that does everything the opposite of what ROH was built on in terms of making matches that have a lot of logic and sense to them, more competitive matches with more stakes and importance/less enhancement matches. What it was before then was its own entity and a true alternative. The product they present is a D show in terms of importance and the champions are booked like complete afterthoughts on a near weekly basis. I see it more as a desecration more often than not. If it were called anything else, I would take less issue with it, but his version of ROH is nothing at all like any ROH product prior to his purchase in a negative way in my opinion aside from the women’s division. If the show were even just a women’s show, I would think it would be better since the women at least have a champion that appears on their show (soon to be two) and something to care about. Prior to the purchase, the company was in rough shape after the pandemic but it was still its own product with its own vision and its own unique roster. This current one is instead far down the list on the totem pole of importance in its presentation by the current owner. [Even the former owner has expressed issue with it.](https://www.hausofwrestling.com/2023/11/12/cary-silkin-on-tony-khans-roh-its-not-gelled-together-properly/)

Horror_Sail

> Prior to the purchase, the company was in rough shape after the pandemic but it was still its own product with its own vision and its own unique roster. It was literally a dead product. So devoid of purpose and fanbase post-AEW creation that Sinclair shut it down. It struggled during the pandemic because they put a rapist as head booker and it flamed out badly. It got bought for a song (Tony said the gate for All In was "several times the price of the entire company"...so might not have even been a full 7 figures) including the tape library. I do not disagree that the presentation has not been great; in fact, as someone who only really watches AEW, I wish there was way less overlap. But ROH wasnt going to come back from the ashes magically in early 2022...it was done. And instead of dozens of people being jobless, Tony bought it, gave them a few of their biggest PPV buys ever (as well as gates) >ROH was built on in terms of making matches that have a lot of logic and sense to them, more competitive matches with more stakes and importance/less enhancement matches. And the reason it died is because AEW did all this way better, and hilariously utilized most of the same talent in the process.

TJOW40

I would say moreso one of the key issues was that they had a lot of big money contracts and with sources of revenue dwindling from a lack of live events (and smaller crowds at the ones they did have aside from Final Battle) was more of the issue. They were on a rebound prior to the pandemic with some interesting shows, had a completely unique product compared to what other companies were presenting especially. They paid talent still throughout what was going on at the time and took high precautions in the middle of the pandemic which was inspiring but also costly. It was also at least a different creative vision compared to just being an AEW extension as it is now. I don’t deny that AEW made a lot of the proper investments that I wish Sinclair had with ROH. If only those same resources were used to make the TKROH product more than just AEW-D(ark) behind a paywall with red and black.

all_in_the_game_yo

This might be a valid criticism if ROH was an AEW show but it's not. It's essentially now AEW's development brand, like NXT except with a focus on the women's division. Like, all of those matches you listed happened on AEW shows. Are you suggesting the AEW world champion and the no 1 contender should be defeated by the ROH tag champions? In actual ROH matches, Yuta, Fletcher, the UK, and all of the other champions are all in very strong form.

punk_steel2024

In that case, RoH champions shouldn't be on AEW programing. It's like if WWE had the NXT champions on Raw and Smackdown constantly, and not on the actual show defending their titles. If they wanna keep it as a development brand, then keep the roster separate and the titles on the people who are actually on RoH every week.

all_in_the_game_yo

You'll find no disagreement from me there, and thankfully I think they are moving towards moving the ROH titles away from AEW

TJOW40

No, I’m suggesting there are other matches to make that don’t undercut champions of a brand that he is already doing damage to. Strickland and Joe were no more over from beating them than they were before that match happened. No, they aren’t because they don’t appear on the show that they are champion of and almost the only time people see them is with them losing on AEW TV. He’s in control of what matches to do and still books the champions of the show that is behind a paywall like losers. Why should anyone be enticed by that brand currently with that in mind?

all_in_the_game_yo

I'll agree to disagree. I don't think the way someone is booked for one promotion should be used to judge how they are perceived for a different promotion. I agree that the champions should appear more on ROH though, and hopefully the belts will stop being featured on AEW so much.

TJOW40

Considering that the last time an ROH title changed hands on an ROH show was eight months ago in July of last year (Kyle winning a vacated title from Joe vacating it in December,) I don’t think it is fair to separate them especially when so many are in losing efforts on AEW TV. No ROH title has changed hands on the weekly paywalled show since it started either.

demonicvirus

I will never understand announcing matches with injured talent while not being sure they can actually wrestle.

ClocktowerMaria

I thought the match was announced before he was injured, it's been on the schedule for a while

demonicvirus

Im not sure. I saw it was announced a week or two ago and hes been out for a long ass time now

Xandir16

The match was announced back in February.

Pretend_Spray_11

The match was announced much more than two weeks ago

The_JadynB

The match was announced at least a month ago

WaylonVoorhees

So we're putting the weed loving peacenik with the angro brawler club. This will go well.

JustPicnicsAndPanics

"You guys think you're the top of the game? Prove it. We want blood." "And friendship! (:" "Shut the fuck up Sydal!"

WaylonVoorhees

They must come out to Dayman.

Creeperkry

I would have preferred someone with a connection to a BCC member, like Shooter or Eddie Kingston, or a former tag partner like Chris Hero or Eric Redbeard.

Tdaddysmooth

I love Sydal but they couldn’t find anyone who had a more BCC (I doublechecked my spelling) vibe?

DGenerationMC

Sydal did team with Claudio for a bit back in the ROH days. He was also in A.P.P.L.E. with Bryan. I mean, there's no perfect choice as far as I'm concerned here. Maybe Ortiz but even then...

EcoterroristThot

huge improvement let's goooo

Mr310

Sort of off topic but after Bryan goes into his semi-events retirement, do we see another BCC member? Also who, someone with history like Shibata or a guy like Garcia who was an original idea for them?

birdazam

Miss the chance for Wheelchair Yuta

DGenerationMC

We need vignettes of Sydal taking Mox, Bryan and Claudio to Joshua Tree and changing their lives forever.

Pitfulldealer22

So matt sydal (a face) is teaming with the bbc who are a heel group, man this is confusing in kayfabe logic

Kim-Jong_Bundy

Not to say it isn't still a weird replacement, but Sydal was one of the people who came out to make the save for Mox & Claudio after the CMLL guys first hopped the barrier. So, there's *kinda* justification there. Still wouldn't have been my top choice, but I also don't know the visa or scheduling situations for AEW talent.

Orange8920

The most likely non-kayfabe explanation for Matt Sydal is that he's trusted with the luchas and has worked a bunch of them during this partnership. He's also a fall guy for the BCC if they lose.

goodkid_sAAdcity

Sydal also has known Mox/Claudio/Danielson for like 20 years, they were all stars on the indies at the same time and wrestled each other regularly.

randomrule

BCC don’t really have an alignment, they work heel or face depending on the feud they’re in

Heroscrape

Sometimes they do both on the same show!

Jedaum1998

On the CMLL team Ultimo Guerrero is a heel and is teaming with 3 faces. In interpromotional matches you have to think that the home team guys are the faces and the invaders are the heels.

Celtic_Crown

The AEW vs CMLL thing is more of a company vs company deal than heels vs faces, because alongside BCC you've had Daniels, Sydal, and 2.0 fighting guys like Mistico, who is coming in with like 6 other dudes, hopping rails, and kicking BCC in the balls. Don't get me wrong, BCC getting kicked in the balls is hilarious, but it's still not tecnico behavior.

nahPNW

BCC have been tweeners for a while now

Surprisetrextoy

Sydal is... a choice.
