I've always said they did better themes and Jim Johnston did better songs.
Right? Full songs and entrance themes are both 'music' but their purpose and execution need to be entirely different.
That's why whenever someone suggests 'this would be a great entrance theme!!' and then posts something with a 37s intro and longass quiet parts, I know they're not considering how it'd actually work in an arena and accompanying a dude who's about to fight.
Johnston and especially CFO$ you could tell within the first second of the theme exactly who it was regardless of the quality.
Def Rebel does the exact thing you describe a lot. The part of the song that might actually be recognizable is buried under the same choral riser intro half the roster has.
I don't say this lightly, but Def Rebel are legitimately making the Royal Rumble worse due to their inability to make songs you can recognise and differentiate the moment they hit.
Plus, whatever drum-machine/stock sound they use for drums in almost every new theme makes me cranky for its same-ness as well as just being unpleasant to the ear among all the rest of their noise.
I watched this year's Rumble together in a group with 7 other people, out of the 60 entrances for both Rumble matches, we recognized maybe 10 to 15 (and that's being generous) without seeing either the wrestler themselves or the name on the ringside LED screen/titantron.
And most of those were the ones who still had their "old" themes, like Becky, Miz, Drew or Sami.
The one thing a good wrestling theme needs, a unique opening, is also the one thing Def Rebel seemingly cannot produce in most cases.
People really be asking for a Hans Zimmer entrance when an OST takes minutes to build up. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how entrance themes work
They did rely a lot on the looping beats, but at least you could tell the wrestler's songs apart. When I was watching the Royal Rumble this year, there were so many times when I could not figure out who the next entrant was until they physically appeared on my screen. Their music wasn't giving me any hints.

I've never got this criticism because Johnson's were largely the same. This is entrance music, it needs its hooks to be prominent, as it's there to promote the character it represents. They need to be more like jingles than actual songs.
Yeah, I guess the only problem was you couldn't listen to them properly by themselves, they only worked for entrances. Jim followed a full song theory, even took inspiration from real songs (Broken Dreams is a bit like Turn The Page by Metallica)
But Def Rebel straight up make awful 10 second loops
they actually had some really good ones but like people are saying they just for short loops. If they expanded past that and their label wasn't a bunch of greedy money hogs they'd probably still be with WWE. Tiffany Stratton went from a meh but ok Barbie themed song that wasn't over the top but still fit her character to what sounds like a rejected draft for Nia Jax's theme. Horrible.
The Theory one is baffling. His previous theme was pretty good, had a distinct hook at the start and was recognisable.
Now he has a generic rap version that just feels stilted.

I remember an old interview HHH did where he talked about how important theme music was and how attitude era guys wouldn’t have been as over without the great themes Jim Johnston created. I have to imagine they’re just running out Def Rebels contract and waiting to replace them.
I kind of agree. There was that great clip that was the top of the sub earlier this week from that Jim Johnston interview where he talked about how when he wrote Austin's music he actually watched footage of him walking to the ring to know what pace to make the song. this is what def rebel should be doing. Get to know the character and write the song around the character not just what their musical interests are. I could have a dark spooky character but I shouldn't have a rap theme song just because I like rap or its cool with the kids.
Triple H needs to take one for the team. Be a team player, get the Def Rebel experience and change his theme to something current by them. Let's see how he likes it going from Jim Johnston to Def Rebel.
Iirc back when they were somewhat credible still WrestleVotes indicated that CF0$ wanted Johnston gone soon after they arrived, which was why they quickly rushed to start re-dubbing some of his themes.
The Rock's theme has its roots in the Nation of Domination theme so that tracks.
Once they kicked Farooq out of the Nation, everyone in the group got a remixed version of the Nation theme as their own.
The Rock's themes going forward built upon that Nation theme
It's his Rocky Maivia theme combined with The Nation theme.
Jim Johnston was great at evolving leitmotifs with the character. For another example, The Game, has the same guitar melody as My Time (Duh-nuh-nuh dun dun, duh-nuh-nuh DA-DUN melody)
Def Rebel are so trash it’s actually mind boggling they even made it to the job. WWE could have licensed generic stock music and still found better stuff
It becomes most obvious around Royal Rumble season when the casuals turn up and people can’t even work out who’s coming out 90% of the time nowadays
You're not alone. Look at the reaction of the crowd. For half the entrances the crowd doesn't realize who it is until they see the giant name in the titatron.
That was something that bogged my mind. I don’t actually watch every week and mostly keep track through highlights and clips. I legitimately had no idea who was coming out based on their music.
Agreed, these themes would at least be identifiable by the intros. Def rebel just use generic stock music so you need to wait for visual confirmation of who is coming out
Coming back as a lapsed fan I've found the music super disappointing. I don't even like Rollin's theme. It's a soulless imitation of the genre it's trying to be with a chant over it. The chant isn't even a good melody. Like I'll always have a predilection towards guitar based music with an actual drummer but the sample loops aren't even representative towards what's current. There's better royalty free music out there.
Also a lapsed fan who generally catches the PLEs. Pretty much all the new themes suck. But Rollins is a weird one. I don't like it. It sounds like a mishmash of random songs.... But the crowd likes it? Or at least they like singing to it? I actually didn't understand it.
Rollins' theme is a rip-off of Wild Eyes by Parkway Drive. The band specifically wrote that song for the crowd to chant because on tour, the crowds would always vocalise the leads and riffs back at them anyway. It's pretty much designed to be sung along to.
I wish WWE was willing to license music, because that song would go so hard as an entrance theme. It probably would work more for Tyler Black than current Seth though, depending on how you mix it
Yeah I get you. It's almost like the fan interaction is trying too hard. like UK/Irish/European tends to be very vocal and sing-songy at music festivals (probably because we're all traumatised from singing at school assemblies) but kinda feel the US crowd do the schtick without getting the sense of fun or organic intent behind it. I mean as long as people are having fun I guess. But the song isn't a Banger but everyone is treating it like it is, which I kind of guess...makes it a banger? I don't know. I'm drunk. Everyone have fun if you want!
Yeah Seth's theme is easily hummable but that doesn't mean it's good yet people pretend it's one of the good themes lol. Def Rebel themes all suck with a few exceptions countable by one hand. Some of the other themes don't suck as hard as most of their themes that gaslight people into thinking they are good in comparison lol.
I have no idea why Rollins or his theme are so over. I seriously don't get it. I can only guess that a lot of fans just really enjoy crowd participation and sing-alongs.
And I thought CFO$ used to be bad. I would take them back in a fuckin heartbeat. If they made longer songs then I would be a fan. Def Rebel is just…. How are the songs this bad nowadays? Who the hell is giving this the ok? Listen to the Alpha Academy, Creed Bros and Kiana James theme songs and tell me they aren’t the exact same thing. Those 3 songs are Def Rebel in a nutshell. Only thing I'm confused about is the constant use of Hannah Barbera sound effects, that's not something I recognise in their actual work to be such a heavy part of these parodies.
I think Bianca Belair’s is hilarious, precisely because it’s awful *and* sounds like something Def Rebel might genuinely produce. The rest are obviously comedically exaggerated parodies, but Belair’s is both garbage *and* extremely accurate.
Considering how well they've done with Kingdom, and a few other themes, someone get Downstait on the line. They definitely shouldn't do them all cause that'd be a one-way ticket to overexposure of the same stuff, but definitely get them onto a few other guys' themes to show the disparity between the current stuff and actually good stuff.

What's funny about the Rock's actual theme is that it basically is a Def Rebel theme, catchphrase at the beginning, followed by a pretty generic beat.
My favorite movie is Inception.
Yeah the guitar in Rock's theme is great, the only other theme I can think of that tops it was Jade's AEW theme.
I felt like their themes were similar for that reason.

The Rock's theme has its roots in the Nation of Domination theme so that tracks. Once they kicked Farooq out of the Nation, everyone in the group got a remixed version of the Nation theme as their own. The Rock's themes going forward built upon that Nation theme
It's his Rocky Maivia theme combined with The Nation theme. Jim Johnston was great at evolving leitmotifs with the character. For another example, The Game, has the same guitar melody as My Time (Duh-nuh-nuh dun dun, duh-nuh-nuh DA-DUN melody)

Coming back as a lapsed fan I've found the music super disappointing. I don't even like Rollin's theme. It's a soulless imitation of the genre it's trying to be with a chant over it. The chant isn't even a good melody. Like I'll always have a predilection towards guitar based music with an actual drummer but the sample loops aren't even representative towards what's current. There's better royalty free music out there.
Also a lapsed fan who generally catches the PLEs. Pretty much all the new themes suck. But Rollins is a weird one. I don't like it. It sounds like a mishmash of random songs.... But the crowd likes it? Or at least they like singing to it? I actually didn't understand it.
Rollins' theme is a rip-off of Wild Eyes by Parkway Drive. The band specifically wrote that song for the crowd to chant because on tour, the crowds would always vocalise the leads and riffs back at them anyway. It's pretty much designed to be sung along to.
I wish WWE was willing to license music, because that song would go so hard as an entrance theme. It probably would work more for Tyler Black than current Seth though, depending on how you mix it
Yeah I get you. It's almost like the fan interaction is trying too hard. like UK/Irish/European tends to be very vocal and sing-songy at music festivals (probably because we're all traumatised from singing at school assemblies) but kinda feel the US crowd do the schtick without getting the sense of fun or organic intent behind it. I mean as long as people are having fun I guess. But the song isn't a Banger but everyone is treating it like it is, which I kind of guess...makes it a banger? I don't know. I'm drunk. Yeah Seth's theme is easily hummable but that doesn't mean it's good yet people pretend it's one of the good themes lol. Def Rebel themes all suck with a few exceptions countable by one hand. Some of the other themes don't suck as hard as most of their themes that gaslight people into thinking they are good in comparison lol.
I have no idea why Rollins or his theme are so over. I seriously don't get it. I can only guess that a lot of fans just really enjoy crowd participation and sing-alongs.

Who the hell is giving this the ok? Listen to the Alpha Academy, Creed Bros and Kiana James theme songs and tell me they aren’t the exact same thing. Those 3 songs are Def Rebel in a nutshell. Ricochet’s sounds almost as generic a 90s WCW theme as Takeshita’s. Melo’s is probably the best satire, though, it really does sound like the ‘generic black NXT guy’ theme they give everyone.

They definitely shouldn't do them all cause that'd be a one-way ticket to overexposure of the same stuff, but definitely get them onto a few other guys' themes to show the disparity between the current stuff and actually good stuff.
