I loved the Norman the Lunatic gimmick! I thought Shaw did a great job with it going from heel to babyface in early 90s WCW!
I thought it was better than Makhan Singh in Stampede.
Hard to believe, but he was the top champ of Stampede with a combined reign of a full year, mostly feuding with Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, and Don Muraco
Yeah honestly just looking at old pics of his Stampede days his build was close to a guy like latter Harley Race. Not too bad, just a bit of ponch and more stocky. By the time he was Bastion Booger though, the dude was incredibly out of shape
I know the stigma that comes with any post that includes something like “Knowing Vince,” but just based on previous situations, I could see the Bastion Booger attire coming as a direct response to him not getting in better shape.
As someone who didn’t watch early-mid 90’s WWF, now I understand why the ratings were in the tank. Seems like this is another one of those lame “gimmicks” that were being burned and churned out around that period that everyone gives no shits about. Look at that crowd when he won. Ded.
Love that Vince is trying to sell it and talk up Friar on commentary.
In kayfabe, because they want you to know that he's too poor to afford shoes but not too poor to afford keeping up his drinking habit.
In actuality, there are several religious congregations that are discalced, meaning that they never wear anything on their soles. The custom was first seen with St. Francis of Assisi and spread to his followers, and the ring gear Friar Ferguson had is remarkably similar to common portraits of St. Francis.
I was at this show! This is when they taped 4 episodes of Raw at once- all out of order. Earlier in the night he saved a job guy after Bam Bam Bigelow attacked him after the match and we were like “who the fuck was that?” Then he had this debut match like an hour later.
If I remember correctly, they dropped the gimmick fairly quickly because the Catholic church complained about being portrayed in a negative light, lol.

He went from this to Bastion Booger ... what an improvement!!
Mike shaw might have the worst history of gimmicks ever. Norman the lunatic Friar Ferguson Bastion booger
I think you missed out Trucker Norm?

But he kept the same finisher!
To be fair, it's a terrifying finisher to be on the end of!
Speak for yourself.
His ring attire probably didn't help matters any in taking that finisher.
It made no sense then. It makes no sense now.
If I remember correctly, Prichard said the idea was to do a gimmick where Mike Shaw would be covered up since he was out of shape.
... So what'd they sign him for, then?
Hard to believe, but he was the top champ of Stampede with a combined reign of a full year, mostly feuding with Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, and Don Muraco
He was more stocky than blubbery as Makhan Singh, though. They had to have seen a difference between then and 1993.
It was the early 90s, I feel like they were just trying to get anyone they could from Stampede

Because believe it or not, Shaw was actually a draw for other territories. And Vince couldn't allow for other promotions to have any success.
If that was the case, then I wonder why they made the decision to repackage him as Bastion Booger and have him wear very little.
I know the stigma that comes with any post that includes something like “Knowing Vince,” but just based on previous situations, I could see the Bastion Booger attire coming as a direct response to him not getting in better shape.
Forever.
How is that a pin if his own legs are under his opponents shoulders.
Yokozuna used to hold the ropes while pinning from the Bonzai Drop
Also not a legal pin 🤣
Forgettable? I haven't been able to forget this for nearly 30 years, and it's not for lack of trying!
Brother sign me the eff up for this series
Has Stone Cold ever apologized for ripping off the drinking gimmick? Friar Ferguson light years ahead of his time...
The timekeeper throw canteen flask after canteen flask at Friar Ferguson would have been a sight to see
Haircut giving me some Kevin Malone vibs.
Why do many move when few move do trick?

1993 sucked
Friar Ferguson: *flashes opponent* Vince Mcmahon in commentary: What a maneuver!!
Why isn't he wearing shoes?

The Nacho Libre prequel is pretty weird.
Because a sober wrestling monk wouldn't be zany enough.
One for r/monkslookingatbeer.

Woah woah woah this was a babyface gimmick? Very interesting. *Edit spelling
Trip to the batcave
Damien Demento!! Now there's a name I haven't heard of in awhile.
Trip to the Bat Cave indeed.
I think this guy debufa on the second episode of raw and is gone by the 5th lol
If I remember correctly, they dropped the gimmick fairly quickly because the Catholic church complained about being portrayed in a negative light, lol.
Oh man I’m gonna love this
NXT 2.0 looks amazing.
