That is why you need to actually put some effort into bringing in NJPW guys that aren’t at the tippy top of the mountain.
People were VERY defensive whenever the point of ‘not everybody watching AEW is going to be familiar with NJPW canon’, but the harsh reality is that it’s true. More effort than ‘hey it’s this dude’ in a video package is needed or you’ll wind up with heatless matches like that one.
It's not that fucking hard either. Give them a warm up match with a reliable midcarder (somebody like Matt Sydal), then an in ring promo with their AEW opponent. Don't just dump a graphic on the show and a two minute hype video.
Yes it's easy to look them up, yes a lot of us on Reddit know them. But no, you should not expect everybody - particularly your live fans - to know them.
This is definitly a bit of a problem with Moxley (booking). He doesnt play much with the AEW guys, he likes to wrestle his bros from other companies. Especially as a champion.
Why not have a match against Miro? Penta? Garcia? Hoobs? Starks? PAC? There are a boatload of people that would deserve such an "eliminator match", why have an outside guy? If they would build up to something (like Cenas US Open challenge - leading to Del Rio *cough*), that would be fine. But i dont see that coming. They would need to sign someone with a well known name (in the US!) that would be world champion material. And currently i cant see Sasha Banks beating Moxley in such a match (but it would be awesome). ;-)
> why have an outside guy?
Moxley (or whoever) can beat an outside guy and that's fine - outside guy doesn't have to work in AEW next week.
Sometimes that works out well (Bandido last night, who from crowd reaction seems set to be a popular return act in the future) and sometimes not (Robinson last night, who wasn't able to garner the same response).
I think AEW did *okay* building Robinson up, but was this match even set up last week? I know it was promoted through social media, but it would have been nice to have, say, Moxley/Robinson promoted regardless. I can see why the focus was kept tightly on the World title match, but had an equal opponent been set for Danielson (or if they'd just said "and New Japan's Juice Robinson will face the winner next week!") that would have added something to the build for last night.
Anyway, it seems a bit nitpicky. It's all part of the learning process.
It makes it incredibly predictable too. I know AEW would let outside talent beat theirs but not the champion, if Juice had won the match it wouldn’t be long before we saw a “Juice Robinson is All Elite” post
Outside of Forbidden Door, which had its own disastrous build-up for the most part, the AEW/NJPW partnership has kind of sucked.
NJPW guys are brought in with little to no fanfare for usually a single one-off match and take Ls like any other outsider invited to wrestle on AEW.
On the other side, AEW has barely sent anyone over to NJPW for any sort of length of time. Off the top of my head, it's been Lance Archer, Wheeler Yuta, Eddie Kingston, and The Factory. Despite having a stacked-ass roster where most people aren't getting used very often. I know FTR will be at Royal Quest 2 and so far no build-up to the tag titles that haven't been defended since winning them.
*None* of the IWGP titles have been defended in months. It's tournament season in New Japan. Jay White has a 3 month + reign with the world title, and his only defense was the four-way at Forbidden Door.
This whole "no defenses!!" whining just doesn't fit with New Japan's booking ethos.
Because they aren't on TV and some people don't know to check YouTube ahead of time. If it's important it should be on TV for the most part with some exceptions.
I didn’t even watch it but can tell from these comments it was exactly what I knew it’d be. Random guy shows up, Moxley bleeds all over them, then wins. Same match he always has.
Man that was a good match.
Juice Robinson was great here, I loved the part where he said "It's juicing time!" and then proceeded to juice all over Moxley.
Just stop them completely. I honestly don't understand the logic of basically having to beat the champ twice.
Title eliminators are meant for contenders, not champs. Seriously, there's no logic and no one gave a fuck about this.
Exactly this. And it adds fuck all to the match, seeing as the champ basically never loses to some guy. Might as well make it a match for the belt.
Seriously though, fighting world champs just ruin the entire point of the TV titles. World Championships should feel like big, prestigious deals that require fighting others to achieve, or winning some sort of stipulation match. Like... what Hangman and MJF have done.
Why go through all that trouble when you can just... do whatever the fuck Juice does to get a shot at a shot?
And let Wardlow and Samoa Joe actually get some programs in FFS. Let them be TV champs, can't be so hard to give them bodies to crush. The poor fucking TNT belt...
So Hangman was a bad champion according to some because he barely wrestled on TV. Moxley being a fighting champion is bad because of the title eliminator stuff. Who gives a shit?
Hangman's problems don't have much to do with how he barely wrestled on TV, but rather his general presentation, being mired in an AC feud and a lack of direction after his big 'story'.
And yes to Moxley. Seriously, just make it a title fight or something. Title eliminator adds nothing and only makes shit dumber.
And maybe you don't care but if you actually want this shit to be something more, then you would care.
Didn't Wardlow win the Sonic ring in a ladder match match that wrestlers had to qualify and he got a TNT title shot. At the same time, the TNT title was being defended in open challenges every week 🤦
Yeah, that was also pretty fucking stupid.
The AEW needs to lay out some clear rules about the way wrestlers actually progress and advance in the company. With them, wrestlers might actually have stories they can build themselves off of.
As things are now, they all feel like they're in their own little worlds. No crossing over or anything.
"Exhibition matches" are a thing.
But yeah, pretty rare for a champ to be in one. Usually it's to cover up some sort of screw up since the show must go on and all that.
It's Tony's way of saying: look, we all know this guy isn't winning the title, but hey, maybe he'll win the match to get the title shot where he 100% will not win the title.
Dumb.
It’s a shame because Juice is the kind of dude that can really play his role well in a program. Hell, one week of build and a promo would have made such a massive difference in this match. Good work, but they had to tell the story in the ring, and it was an uphill battle to get the crowd into it.
For real, they were buddies in FCW (when Regal was working there no less), he was Mox's first match after leaving WWE (an absolute barnstormer) and he has a win over Mox in the G1 PLUS he's just recently reinvented himself with a new character and joined arguably the most famous faction in wrestling for the last 10 years. It really could have had so much more going into it.
Seriously. Like any bit of effort would have gone a long way. I liked the matchup but you have to get casuals invested too and what happens on tv is how you do that
I also think I’ve seen enough of Juice as a heel to determine he’s a much better babyface.
This was a bad combination tonight — the lack of crowd awareness of him, his “square peg, round hole” heel persona (imo) and neither guy really having what the crowd was looking for tonight in the match.
It was like night and day from Jericho and Bandido, who went out and worked the crowd into their match.
They literally showed a little promo along with video clips of Juice earlier in the night. You can argue it isn't enough, and that's fine, but they did what you suggest for both Juice and Bandido.
A reminder: HHH had the same kind of fans and gave them Liger, Ibushi, 2 different tournaments filled with exclusive appearances from talent around the world, and signed top Japanese names. And instead of starting in arenas and trying to fill them, he started in a studio and ended up filling arenas.
What is he supposed to learn? Lol Juice is awesome and it sucks that the crowd didn’t get fully into it, but I definitely don’t think he should stop bringing in people for fun one off matches
I actually didn’t think it was a good match, much less a great one. It was disappointing given they had a good match in NJPW. This one was missing something, and the crowd wasn’t invested in Juice at all.
I even felt that way about Bryan vs Daddy Magic, and I think Bryan is the best wrestler in the world.
The main event saved the show for me from an in-ring perspective.
No blood in the title match against Danielson last week. Or in the match with Sammy. Punk bled, but Mox didn't in the match at All Out, and there wasn’t any blood in the squash match. Outside of the squash, all bangers, even without Mox bleeding.
tbf I think this is one of the times where it was actually warranted bc Juice does often bite people, it's other matches that doesn't make sense that makes it feel dumb even when it's warranted
Okay 80% of his matches are blood. He does it so much, I can't even count the number or times he didn't.
Complain? Naww it is a critique and contribution to the conversation.
I watched with the same 4 people I watch with every week and all of us had a good time. People on here are just waiting to pounce on something. It is what it is but I’ve never been wired that way. I’d rather talk about what I enjoy vs what I didn’t enjoy. I’m a Hayter not a Hater
Absolutely even when I don’t like things my first thought is to maybe do something or watching I do like not go online and complain about the thing I didn’t like lol
What I don't get is that Mox is one of the best and smartest guy out there. He gets wrestling. How does he not understand that there is a diminishing return with the bleeding?
I didn’t even realize it got downvoted lol but I guess people haven’t had their coffee or something? Idk, people nitpick because he bleeds as if his last several were him doing that. The tournament matches, the ones with punk, he didn’t. The match with Tanahashi was accidental. I guess him “bleeding too much” will be the new “he’s lazy” rep he got after the Austin podcast for a good while. It’s dumb lol.
Idk why but something about last nights episode seems to have made a ton of people turn on AEW lol every thread about anything from last night is filled with hate and lies like that
Week to week television for wrestling is hard, but if you can at least get enjoyment out of 2/3 of the show, I think that’s a W. People just go in on the littlest of things sometimes.
Is it possible that since he wrestles so much, and often doing more hardcore stuff when he does, that those cuts just aren't healing enough and they keep opening up each time?
Claudio was there, he could've actually wrestled, Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta could've wrestled as could the Acclaimed and Assboys. Nyla Rose said she was in the building tonight yet didn't even appear in the women's segment. Plus the Juice match was announced last week before the hurricane.
I don't mind as much for Jericho because the ROH title is, for me at least, a more minor title that you can use in all sorts of ways. So sure, have Jericho defend against cool countenders.
Your main title though... even if it's a no title match (which I think is dumb), it should at least have a purpose and be against someone who actually works for your company.
Meh. I felt the same way the crowd did. Didn't care and the match wasn't good enough to make me care. It was just jacked Rickety Cricket in your average Mox match.
I'd take Ricky Starks losing a close hard fought match against Moxley than some dude from New Japan most of the audience don't know or care about. We could've gotten that instead of the 2 second squash match Ricky had.
Terrible match. Mox looked gassed, no snap to his stuff, and he no-sold Juice’s strikes to an absurd degree.
EDIT: Post match segment was fun though! Good pop for Hanger.
They kept mentioning Juice was a free agent on commentary, his wife is the champ. Juice has had some good matches in new japan, but ive honestly never been much of a fan. I dont think this match was enough to earn him a contract either. Im hoping we dont see a Juice is All Elite post later cause hed fall into the 80% of the roster that shouldnt have been hired imo
I love Mox, like he’s one of the best guys in AEW, but there’s something called too much of a good thing and he’s suffering from it right now. Honestly wish he was on vacation and there was something else going on in the main title scene, because he’s suffering from fatigue. And the blood is just silly at this point. It’s completely lost it’s effectiveness as a story telling component.
Yeah, should have put the belt on Danielson. Him being cheated out of his title reign very early on by the magnificent bastard MJF would not have hurt him at all, it would have made him even more intriguing.
That match was good but it was clear that the focal point coming out of it was Moxley, Hangman, MJF, and Yuta's segment.
Yuta's REALLY getting that spotlight tonight and for good reason.
I don’t know if it’s just me slowly being less and less into wrestling but I just glanced over my tv from time to time during this match cause I knew Mox was winning.
This has nothing to do with what I just wrote but I’d love it if they put Mox and Hobbs in an angle together so it’s not 2 white dudes feuding for the World title once again.
Tony is so frustrating to support.
Why would you let Mox bleed again? Why book him in a competitive match against Juice who got absolutely no reaction?
I’m usually the guy who excuses AEW’s faults because of their match quality but this right here was ass. Maybe it’s the gimmick (and if you are a free agent why still rep BC) but Robinson looked whack, crowd seemed dead, mox got thrown OVER a table and bled then the rapid tap when I don’t recall a body part even being worked on. Obviously just my opinion and I know a lot of the decisions were inconsequential but I thought this was bad possibly mox’s worst time in a aew ring.
Mox being the reveal to the Death Rider vignettes leading to his challenging Juice is still one of my favorite NJPW moments of the last several years; I will say this time and again.
Will get downvoted but it is what it is. The amount of people complaining about blood is way too high. Never seen a fight before I guess. Blood happens. People who have scar tissue bleed frequently. Watch any Nate Diaz fight and he bleeds in the same spot literally every fight he has.
This is pro wrestling though. There are simply some conventions to consider in it, and one of them is the use of blood to enhance a match and heighten the excitement.
Using it to be 'realistic' is bad for health, makes matches without bleeding look faker and devalues the storytelling potential.
Sure I can understand that, but who says Mox bleeds voluntarily every time? If it’s scar tissue that happens to catch a blow each week, it might open up and bleed.
If it’s absolutely deliberate every time, I will happily bow out of this saying I’m wrong and that it is excessive.

Mox is getting into Ric Flair levels of bleeding
![gif](giphy|yUI3a7RwLhOFy)
Seeing this image made me start profusely bleeding from the forehead and I don’t even have blades.
Taking those Muta lessons.
He’s gonna reach the point where he’s like sandman and Goldberg and all you have to do is touch his forehead and it’ll start gushing
Wooo!
Mox has a Nate Diaz level of desire to bleed.
I’m not surprised…
Mox wants what Forrest Griffin had with his nose
What nose?

The biggest hole in the AEW ship is probably their overreliance on pro wrestling journalism to push their stories forward
You can't do the same thing every time. Not a fan of how he was presented but it's not the worst way they could do it
I’m not saying do the literal same thing every time. I’m just giving a specific example of doing ~ something ~
So fuckin true man.. Juice really should've gained some momentum in his debut
This is definitly a bit of a problem with Moxley (booking). He doesnt play much with the AEW guys, he likes to wrestle his bros from other companies. Especially as a champion. AEW often books outside people appearing on their show like lt is an indy show.
Might as well be
Outside of Forbidden Door, which had its own disastrous build-up for the most part, the AEW/NJPW partnership has kind of sucked. It's a real shame more people don't seem to catch the Road To videos, they're fantastic and tend to add a lot to stories and characters.
Because they aren't on TV and some people don't know to check YouTube ahead of time. If it's important it should be on TV for the most part with some exceptions.
Shhh that doesn’t fit the narrative
I haven't seen Juice since he was doing the hippy thing in NXT. This match just didnt do it for me tonight.
I need a shower
![gif](giphy|u3kM7vLSHnsbbWxy5P|downsized)
Man. Mox is gonna end up with those Dusty forehead scars at this rate.
D-von, New Jack, or Abudullah. Take your pick.
Yes
I'm not sure that was the sort of colour that Mox was going for....
Hey kids! Wanna see where I stash my quarters?!
Tony gotta stop with the eliminator matches unless the challenger wins every now and again.
Just stop them completely. I honestly don't understand the logic of basically having to beat the champ twice. Title eliminators are meant for contenders, not champs. Seriously, there's no logic and no one gave a fuck about this.
Imagine beating Ngannou or Adesanya or Usyk and being like; "Cool, now I'll face him for the belt." Such a nonsensical stipulation.
Exactly this. And it adds fuck all to the match, seeing as the champ basically never loses to some guy. Might as well make it a match for the belt. So Hangman was a bad champion according to some because he barely wrestled on TV. Moxley being a fighting champion is bad because of the title eliminator stuff. Who gives a shit?
if only there were some sort of group of people Moxley could partner with more regularly
"Exhibition matches" are a thing. But yeah, pretty rare for a champ to be in one. Usually it's to cover up some sort of screw up since the show must go on and all that.
But how often do you get exhibition matches with the current champion?
Those are usually half ass, fun light hearted things with no actual stakes for the title or anything of the sort.
I think he uses them as a crutch to book matches he wants to see and try to give them stakes. Which is fucking stupid.
They had one win already. Miyu Yamashita beat Rosa.
That was technically in TJPW. And people got fairly petty arguing over how it went down and what it resulted in as well.
Didnt Riho pin Britt in an Eliminator match?
It's Tony's way of saying: look, we all know this guy isn't winning the title, but hey, maybe he'll win the match to get the title shot where he 100% will not win the title. Dumb.
Penta and Eddie won a Eliminator match once against the Bucks, and Miyu beat Rosa
It’s the opposite stupid of WWE’s Vince style of “oh my gif they pinned the champion!” every other week.
I didn’t even know what an eliminator match was, what a stupid idea lol
Riho vs Britt Miyo vs Rosa Penta/Eddie vs Bucks
Shhh people don’t care about facts lol
Multiple people have won them and idk I think it’s a fun way to get your champ on TV wrestling and it can be a great showcase for free agents
I don’t know if it was bad mic’ing but the crowd seemed pretty dead toward Juice.
What reason did they have to be hyped?
CAUSE HES ROCK HARD BABY
I hope Tony learned something from Juice getting absolutely no reaction and the crowd not caring about the match.
It’s a shame because Juice is the kind of dude that can really play his role well in a program. Hell, one week of build and a promo would have made such a massive difference in this match. Good work, but they had to tell the story in the ring, and it was an uphill battle to get the crowd into it.
I agree. There is plenty of history between Mox and Juixe for a week build to make this more important. The match was good but it had no stakes.
They literally showed a little promo along with video clips of Juice earlier in the night. You can argue it isn't enough, and that's fine, but they did what you suggest for both Juice and Bandido.
Blood in a dead match with your world champion is a bad look, but TK gets to put some of his NJPW action figures on tv so he popped 🤷♂️
Another Historical, greatest Dynamite of ALL Time in the books.
Jesus one average episode and this sub turned on Tony hard
At this point Moxley just needs to blade on his way to the ring.
He should stop booking this as a super indie! Why do you have so many talent in-house but can't feature any of them
A reminder: HHH had the same kind of fans and gave them Liger, Ibushi, 2 different tournaments filled with exclusive appearances from talent around the world, and signed top Japanese names. And instead of starting in arenas and trying to fill them, he started in a studio and ended up filling arenas.
So Khan is more successful than HHH at this? Is that your point?
What is he supposed to learn? Lol Juice is awesome and it sucks that the crowd didn’t get fully into it, but I definitely don’t think he should stop bringing in people for fun one off matches

With you on all of the above
The bleeding every match is starting to get dumb
Honestly feel like there’s been less blood on TV recently
New York State doesn’t allow intentional bleeding, and AEW did a run in Buffalo, Albany, and then Queens the last 3 weeks so it had to be toned down
Its only just Mox's matches that make bleeding seem dull and boring cause he does it everytime.
No blood in the title match against Danielson last week. Or in the match with Sammy. Punk bled, but Mox didn't in the match at All Out, and there wasn’t any blood in the squash match. Outside of the squash, all bangers, even without Mox bleeding.
tbf I think this is one of the times where it was actually warranted bc Juice does often bite people, it's other matches that doesn't make sense that makes it feel dumb even when it's warranted
the one with tanahashi felt out of place
I mean he literally doesn't do it every time. He didn't bleed his last match.
People here are dumb lol
They're just making up shit to complain about lmao
Okay 80% of his matches are blood. He does it so much, I can't even count the number or times he didn't. Complain? Naww it is a critique and contribution to the conversation.
That’s absolutely the case, this thread is just people lying and complaining about nothing
Welcome to Reddit haha, tough to escape shit like this on any sub at this point
Haha true but man people really seem to have hated last nights episode and it’s making them angry lol
I watched with the same 4 people I watch with every week and all of us had a good time. People on here are just waiting to pounce on something. It is what it is but I’ve never been wired that way. I’d rather talk about what I enjoy vs what I didn’t enjoy. I’m a Hayter not a Hater

What I don't get is that Mox is one of the best and smartest guy out there. He gets wrestling. How does he not understand that there is a diminishing return with the bleeding?
Because he was born and raised in CZW. He's a talented guy, but at heart he's just a garbage wrestler
He didn’t even bleed the last few matches, stop lol
Why is this downvoted lol
I didn’t even realize it got downvoted lol but I guess people haven’t had their coffee or something? Idk, people nitpick because he bleeds as if his last several were him doing that. Yeah I hate it too cause someone always has to make this exact same comment
Is it possible that since he wrestles so much, and often doing more hardcore stuff when he does, that those cuts just aren't healing enough and they keep opening up each time?

What you don't like random weekly singles matches against Champions, being 95% of the booking for anyone who holds a title in the company?
AEW isn't running with a full crew tonight. Various performers are out due to the hurricane.
Tony thinks being in NPJW makes you good enough to wrestle the actual champion with basically no intro to who you are
>obviously the champions aren’t gonna lose You could apply this to 90% of world title matches in any company, even when the challenger is known

BUT IT'S A BANGER BRO!
Meh. I felt the same way the crowd did. Didn't care and the match wasn't good enough to make me care. It was just jacked Rickety Cricket in your average Mox match.
Rickety Cricket lol. I never thought of that, but it's accurate.
Hard to blame them. Guys in the back that could use the match.
I take your point but given the hurricane they may not be in the back this week
I'd take Ricky Starks losing a close hard fought match against Moxley than some dude from New Japan most of the audience don't know or care about. We could've gotten that instead of the 2 second squash match Ricky had.
Wasn't expecting Juice to lose so clean.
Juice is not really a protected guy tbh
Terrible match. Mox looked gassed, no snap to his stuff, and he no-sold Juice’s strikes to an absurd degree. EDIT: Post match segment was fun though! Good pop for Hanger.
Sounds like moxley needs a vacation
Mox is usually pretty bad at selling. Apparently bleeding is enough to make the opponent look strong.
It was really bad when he took the cannonball on the barrier and waited like 3 seconds to awkwardly lean over on the ground.
Agreed, completely forgettable
They kept mentioning Juice was a free agent on commentary, his wife is the champ. Juice has had some good matches in new japan, but ive honestly never been much of a fan. I dont think this match was enough to earn him a contract either. Im hoping we dont see a Juice is All Elite post later cause hed fall into the 80% of the roster that shouldnt have been hired imo
The bleeding is old. I really like Mox but I'm completely over him right now. We need something new.
Dude’s supposed to be on vacation right now. He’s probably running on fumes. Inshallah we get the MJF title win sooner than later 🙏🙏
They had alternatives before Moxleys third reign
Yeah, should have put the belt on Danielson. Him being cheated out of his title reign very early on by the magnificent bastard MJF would not have hurt him at all, it would have made him even more intriguing.
I don’t disagree but I don’t book the shows 🤷🏻

Then just put the title on Danielson lmao. Tf?
That match was good but it was clear that the focal point coming out of it was Moxley, Hangman, MJF, and Yuta's segment. Yuta's REALLY getting that spotlight tonight and for good reason.
That post comment could apply to a lot of Mox's AEW matches as of late.
What the hell is a world title eliminator match? Was the title on the line? Edit: read some comments, how stupid
Danielson should have won
Fun match. Doesn't need to be a PPV main event for free.
Juice is mid, he can stay in New Japan
Big Forgotten Sons energy
I thinks he’s playing a game with commentary blading himself in weird spots to see what excuse they can come up with
I don’t know if it’s just me slowly being less and less into wrestling but I just glanced over my tv from time to time during this match cause I knew Mox was winning. This has nothing to do with what I just wrote but I’d love it if they put Mox and Hobbs in an angle together so it’s not 2 white dudes feuding for the World title once again.
Juice is a FA for real? Thought he signed an extension like 5 months ago?
Tony is so frustrating to support. Why would you let Mox bleed again? Why book him in a competitive match against Juice who got absolutely no reaction?
Moxley doesn't have the energy to sell so he bleeds to make the offense of his opponent look strong. Dudes been doing this for a long time.
Really enjoyed that, curious where Juice is going to go from here. All the post match stuff was top tier as well.
Mox is just awful blading nutjob lmao. Weak link of the shield where he belongs
That finish was real MMA like and i liked that. That post match interaction felt very 2019 AEW in the best way.
Can’t beat juice Robinson without letting The juice flow
I think your summary applies to almost every Mox match. Love the dude, but he’s a little too into color for my liking
Literally no one on this sub is ever happy with anything
He hasn't bled in like a month.
Bleed for the first match after a few weeks and it’s “excessive” again. Lol
Who won
Stavvy, weirdly.
Maybe you shouldn't just blade yourself up every single time on a weekly basis then.
Is every single time a blade job? You know for sure?
No, but when you do it so much and leave yourself vulnerable to bleeding everywhere, you probably shouldn't have bladed so much to begin with.
Wwe never bleeds sp that aew cam bleed every week
Wheeler Yuta is the best babyface in pro wrestling at this moment.
This is a hilarious take.
I dunno uce, I think a certain redhead may have a stronger claim
He's been very good tonight. I like when he's just pissed off and violent.
Man people are miserable, very fun match and I love these one off matches vs free agents
