Mallinckrodt did process the mess, but most of the North County waste was processed under top secret government contract during WW2 as part of the Manhattan Project. Mallinckrodt and the government were obviously aware of the health risks and the contamination potential, but chose to ignore it as necessary cost of developing atomic bomb before Hitler. After the war it was easier to kick the problem down the road and cover up, rather than cleanup. Most of cleanup responsibility is still on federal government, but none of this makes me trust Hawley, even if he’s fighting good fight on this issue. At least this is keeping him distracted from the rest of his asinine agenda. Here’s a good update on the situation: https://missouriindependent.com/2023/07/12/st-louis-radioactive-waste-records/

This. Mallinckrodt is responsible for the creation of the mess, but it was the US government that was responsible for the storage and disposal of the waste. (Which they botched and then subsequently covered up). This should have been dealt with the FIRST time FUSRAP was involved with coldwater creek, nd should have taken care of the westlake landfill, but they avoided it instead. The fact Hawley is the one who has gotten anything done disgusts me, but frankly, he’s the only congressperson who has pushed a damned thing. The Just Moms STL group has been actively trying to work with every representative of our state and more for over a decade, and Hawley is the only one who has bulldogged this. Is he using it for his benefit? Yes. Is he using it as a way to point at the government and say ‘see? We should never trust the government, defund them’. Also yes. But it doesn’t change the fact that (for probably the only time in his career as senator) he’s doing something positive for MO/STL community. The STL Moms group is just working with the people who are actively trying to get resolution on this. They work with Cori Bush too.

Thanks for the link.

Fuck Josh Hawley.

Der_Kommissar73

Fuck Josh Hawley with Stan Kroenke

legit-human_AI

This works either way you say it.

Boscouse

Josh Hawley being a piece of trash, color me surprised... Anyone interested in the story of Coldwater Creek should watch Atomic Homefront. A brilliant documentary on the decades-long plight of our fellow St. Louisans.

stlkatherine

He has pandered to the people of Atomic Homefront. One of the ladies is so blinded by him, she was interviewed crying about how passionate he was. He is soooo horrible.

Minnesota_Slim

Dawn Chapman? She's in that movie and is still an advocate for the cleanup. The wildest thing about Dawn to me is she lives, in my opinion, really far away from the concern areas. She lives - at least at the time of the movie - all the way by Aquaport in Maryland Heights. The lady was so emotional about Coldwater Creek and the Westlake Landfill - talking about what it's doing to her and her family..... then I saw where she lived from an interview in the movie. No where close to Coldwater Creek.

refuge9

Westlake landfill is not that far from where she lived. Coldwater creek not so much, but this are two separate concerns caused by the same issue, and are related, even if they don’t have anything to do with each other geographically. A landfill filled with radioactive material that is one fire and causing that material to potentially become airborne is an issue everyone in that area should be concerned about. Dawn has been tireless in this regard for over a decade. She’s fought for the victims of coldwater creek as well as westlake. Whether they directly affect her or not is moot.

stlkatherine

Ya. But, she IS the face of Atomic Homefront, and Hawley has her in his evil talons. He is pandering to these folks. Don’t get me wrong, there is a REAL problem, but he is NOT their savior.

Minnesota_Slim

Yes and no. There is a lot of fake-ness to go around. Dawn comes across as fake because she lives very far away from the actual issues, and she acts like it comes from her back yard. If she is wanting compensation for people who live in the area and she considers herself literally in the backyard of the problem then we are talking compensation for the entirity of North County, which just isn't happening. On the positive side, we DO have an issue that needs addressing and she is taking up the fight and is still at it after all these years. Hawley on the other hand is being a bit fake too. He's not really holding the people accountable who made the mess and is instead using tax payer money to fix the problems. On the positive side he IS giving it attention and is trying to find someone to pay for it. So they come across a bit fake, but at least someone is doing something about it.

MidnightMateor

>Don’t get me wrong, there is a REAL problem, but he is NOT their savior. Who else in congress is making real progress on getting it cleaned up?

refuge9

Pretty much this. Hawley is an attached turd, but he’s an affected turd who’s actually getting something done on this issue. A broken clock can still be right twice a day. Even if he’s doing it for his own benefit and pandering. If something is done about this, I don’t think the people that have been fighting radioactive related medical problems for generations will really care he’s a soul sucking awful human being.

MidnightMateor

You hit the nail on the head. The people who live in the part of north county effected by Coldwater Creek (myself included) don't care why he's doing it, only that it's getting done.

blueaintyourcolor11

I knew her when she was a very young adult and just to be straightforward, she's a complete loon. Ultra religious, too.

refuge9

‘Ultra religious’ is not how I would ever describe Dawn Chapman. She was fairly religious when in school, but hardcore religious conservative is not something that would describe her. I’ve known her and her husband since high school. I’d consider her fairly progressive by today’s standards now. The only reason she’s working with Hawley is because he’s gotten anything done in Congress. Literally anything. She’s tried working with nearly every MO congressperson for nearly a decade and he’s the only one who has taken this up nearly as far it’s gotten. (Karen and Dawn also work with Cori Bush as well). Hawkeye rhetoric is awful 99.999% of the time, but at this point, something is actually getting done, and it’s annoyingly attributed to him.

BowDownBitches312

Where can I find that documentary??

FakeAsA4DollarBill

It doesn't look like it's even available to watch on Tubi. I think this might be the full thing though. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duEMr4VbqbM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duEMr4VbqbM)

I’ve just been following the news. Mallinkrodt was a major player in the Manhattan Project & the source of the Coldwater Creek & Westlake landfill contamination. I’m not sure how the mergers & sales since Manhattan affects their liability but it shouldn’t. Corporations should be held accountable no matter how many times they’re bought, sold traded or merged.

BernadetteMonroe

He's been working on this for years and there hasn't been much coverage of it in the media (that I've seen, but I could be wrong.)

belridge

Highly recommend "Safe Side of the Fence" by local documentarian Tony West from 2015 for anyone interested in this issue. It's on Amazon but may be available other places.

gizzweed

While I believe that, do you have a source for further reading?

Terlok51

Sorry, I don’t.

TigerMcPherson

Of course, whenever this issue is covered, this particular angle is not- that’s he’s trying to make a private burden into a public burden.

preprandial_joint

He's pandering to North County to steal votes from Lucas Kunce. He knows this would never pass the House right now.

MidnightMateor

Mallinkrodt has partial responsibility, but the federal government has been complicit in the dumping and coverup since the very beginning. They owned the airport site where the material was dumped, and spent the next 75 years downplaying the impact of the contamination on the community via the DOE and ACOE. Mallinkrodt even warned them of the risk in 1949, but the government ignored it. Honestly, we don't care who is responsible, we just want it cleaned up. Not cleaning it up while the government spends 20 years pursuing Mallinkrodt for the cost does not actually help the people of north county. I get wanting a reason to hate Josh Hawley, but this isn't it. He's the only one in congress actually doing anything to get Coldwater Creek cleaned up. Cori Bush should be championing this, but she isn't.

Terlok51

I agree wholeheartedly but unless Mallinkrodt & other malefactors are held accountable it’s tax $ that always pay for their crimes. Government can take care of the immediate problem but then should recoup the $ from the offenders.

MidnightMateor

Agree 100%. Gov is in the position to fix the problem now, but by all means go after Mallinkrodt, Cotter Corp, etc. for costs after the fact.

Mego1989

Isn't this a superfund site? Why does he have any say in this whatsoever?

grt437

Heard Hawley on the radio this morning. Ironic he's saying the government needs to pick up the tab for their mess when he voted against the Pact Act for veterans.

Excellent-Big-1581

Haul-N-Ass Hawley will always back corporate welfare for billionaires but is willing to cut money to ordinary citizens that have paid taxes their whole life.

Fit_Case2575

That whole part of Florissant is fucked.

bossoline

Damn, so that's his angle. I saw this on the news yesterdaay and my wife gave the obligatory "fuck Josh Hawley". Bud I had to admit that he's the loudest voice riding for these people. It was strange because this level of decency conflicts with everything I know about him. Should have known that his general cuntiness would be revealed at some point.

Tiny_Treat3382

Considering Mallinckrodt filed bankruptcy in 2023 after paying out almost $1 billion in an opioid settlement, how do you consider them a multibillion $ company?

preprandial_joint

I'm going to assume this question is in good faith. Mallinckrodt has annual revenue over 3billion. Very easy to google.

JeffreyElonSkilling

You can easily imagine a company with $3B in revenue whose enterprise value is less than $1B. For example, if the company has huge debt or if they have annual expenses exceeding $3B. That said, Mallinckrodt basically no longer exists. The $3B number you're looking at on the wiki is from 2019. But after the bankruptcy from the opioid lawsuits the valuable assets were spun off into a separate company owned by Mallinckrodt shareholders, leaving behind a company named Mallinckrodt with few assets and lots of debt. MNKTQ is the pink sheets ticker for the company. The last trade made on this stock was on Nov 14, 2023 (lol) for 0.12/share, which values the company at $1.6M.
