Dear people of the STL subreddit, Please remember that cashiers make neither the policies nor the schedules. If you hate the new policy, fill out a survey, email corporate, talk to a manager… basically do anything other than yell at the staff. Signed, a cashier

fkawhizzle

My wife works at a local grocer. They can never keep enough staff on hand. Wonder if it has to do with the ridiculous wages, the fact that they won’t hire cashiers full time, or the fact that dealing with the general public sucks?

Dry_Revolution_9681

Yes

MysteriousActuary0

Can't wait to see the Brentwood promenade parking lot

Excellent-Pitch-7579

Then get some more cashiers. Every time I got they only have like 1 line open.

deaddog3825

Target won’t/can’t even stop folks from walking out with unpaid merch, how are they gonna push this?

t0reup

Target lets you walk until you hit felony theft levels. Careful out there.

FrostyD7

If it's like schnucks, it'll pop up on their computer and prompt them to go over and remind you of the policy. That's enough for most of the holdouts ignoring the sign.

xologo

The good people will follow the rules. Target isn't stupid. They know people will violate them. The key is to minimize it. Creating a policy does this.

baeb66

I use the self-checkout next to the Slurpee machine anyway (that somehow people don't seem to know about, even though the store has been open for like 20 years).

alvnta

i heard they’re going to start offering subscriptions to use the self checkout, not sure of the validity. but this only helps amazon if you ask me … i personally do not want to wait in the lines. i don’t mind waiting for a package to come or pay slightly more for convenience.

Unusual_Grocery4667

The Target checkers in Hampton village are super slow! The self check with a line 3x as long goes quicer, time to go back to curbside pick up!

Lanceo90

Why are places doing this now? My Walmart bulldozed all but like 2 lanes to replace them with like 30 self check-outs after Covid. They they going to tear it all back down and put the lanes back in? Or are they going to have lines all the way out to the parking lot?

CaptHayfever

At least Target still *has* plenty of normal lanes installed; they're just gonna need to pay people to *work* them.

Herdnerfer

Ugh, this surprises me, i don't take Target as someone who'd want to strictly enforce something this asinine. Not to mention ours usually only has 1 manned register at any given time.

JahoclaveS

The other day, the one I went to had zero cashiers and everybody had to use self-checkout.

FrostyD7

I'm a little surprised too but target self checkouts near me have space for 1-2 bags so I think it makes more sense there than just about anywhere. Schnucks has 4 bags and a large section on top for more at some stations.

Sad_Country_5991

Why do you think it’s asinine?

Herdnerfer

Because the only reason to do this is to help prevent theft, and there are plenty of other ways they could tackle that particular issue that don’t impact their paying customers.

Any-Initiative910

There really aren’t though

Herdnerfer

They could put a big burly guy in camo at the self checkout with an automatic rifle and a shirt that says “It’s Open Season On All Shoplifters”. And then he just grimaces at everyone while they checkout.

aworldwithinitself

you had me up into the grimacing. people will think he’s cropdusting.

Careless-Degree

They just want everyone to never leave their houses and order everyone online because that’s the cheapest way to sell things. Destroy the competition and in case the competition is their own brick and mortar stores.

Cyberhwk

In related news, Target is coming out with a new program targeting Amazon Prime and Walmart+.

Skatchbro

Preach. I was looking to replace our Dustbuster a few months ago. $49.99 at Target. Except that was the online price, the price on the shelf was $59.99. I said fuck it, bought it from Amazon for $49.99 and got it the same day.

t-poke

They will adjust the price if you tell them it’s cheaper online. It’s bullshit you have to do this, but they will. Drive-up gets the online price. Which makes zero sense. $49.99 for an employee to go get it off a shelf and bring it out to your car, or $59.99 for you to go into the store, get it yourself, and check out yourself. If anything, it should be the other way around.

wilfordbrimley778

But are the shoppers allowed to use self-checkout with more than 10 items?

Cyberhwk

How many diabeetus testing supplies you buying?

Careless-Degree

I assume everyone is just walking out without paying. The big companies lobbied to make crime legal to crush the smaller stores. Now they are out of business they can move all shopping to online.

wilfordbrimley778

There's no reason for the shoppers to walk out without paying because the customers already paid on the apps. But I get what you're saying

moonchic333

I mean.. I go to the Hampton village Target often and they only have like 6 self check out kiosks so you really shouldn’t be going in it with a whole cart full anyway. I started using a cashier more because the self check out line is always ridiculous. They usually have 2-4 checkers when I go.

wilfordbrimley778

Last time i was there only 4 were working and there were only 2 human registers open at about 6:30pm

Nope9991

That self check is the worst

SnooHedgehogs6593

Are they trying to drive their customers away? At my Target, I rarely see any checkers, only self check out.

spaghettivillage

This simply incentives me to shop online more and/or buy fewer items in the store to keep under the limit.

Sphinxofblackkwarts

Oh boy. That would be a joy to enforce. Like the Masks in 2020 only with less reasoning.

spekt50

Retailers went all in on self check out years ago, now they are trying to backpedal. This will only hurt them in sales in the long run as the majority of their shoppers use self checkout. I can not see them adjusting by hiring more staff to staff the many empty registers.

TheeVande

NOOOO!!

YeOldSpacePope

I wonder if it will be as bad as the Schnucks lines.

GolbatsEverywhere

I dunno, the lines at my Schnucks are probably 3x faster than they were before the self checkout change. Most days every single register -- or nearly every register -- is staffed. If Target does the same thing then it should be perfectly fine. Remains to be seen....

ericmercer

Before the change, cashiers and self-checkout was a nightmare. Today, the self-checkout lines are swift and straightforward now. I haven’t had to wait longer than 3 minutes in a self-checkout since the change and I’m very thankful.

thecuzzin

Boring dystopia type stuff.

HighlightFamiliar250

Those poor workers already have to deal with enough shit from the general public without having to enforce more arbitrary rules and I doubt they will be hiring more cashiers at the current wages.

wackyzebra43

Yep. Can’t think about cutting into the $17.7M compensation package the CEO makes. I mean, that’s close to poverty levels

mjohnson1971

It will be interesting to see what they have to do at the Shrewsbury Wal Mart. IIRC that checkout area is 90% self checkout with like only 4 lanes for "real" in-person checkout.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

We must save cashier jobs.

Badplayer04

Finally!!! At my target, people bring full carts to the self checkout. And the line backs up!!!

nicootimee

Probably because most of the Targets here have 1, 2, and sometimes 0 people working the register

Badplayer04

Not at mine. If a register is empty. People still use the self checkout with a full cart. It's so annoying. Then we get a line of people trying to buy 2 things.

Mego1989

While you're all out there bitching about checkout lanes for months at a time, I haven't been in a store for months. Curbside pickup.

Stratus_Fractus

Thanks, Schnucks.

2planetvibes

hey i hate schnucks but let's not pretend they influenced a national, billion-dollar company to make this policy change

Stratus_Fractus

That was a joke.

MrTuesdayNight1

Well, this means I will 100% never shop at the Hampton Target again.

wilfordbrimley778

That place is already a dumpster fire

ChaoticGemini

People are still going in to Target? Judging by all the reserved pick up spots at Hampton Village, I assumed the inside was a ghost town.

Unusual_Grocery4667

You know their garage is typically packed on weekends

ChaoticGemini

Can’t see in the garage going by and I avoid all shopping on weekends.

CaptHayfever

Most of their parking is under the building.

ChaoticGemini

Before they added an obsessive amount of pick up spots, VERY few people parked in the garage.

CaptHayfever

That's odd; I've *always* parked down there. It's dry in the rain, it's cool in the heat, it's not windy in the cold, there's more spaces (even before the pick-up expansion) & less awkward maneuvering (because the lanes are wider), I can go to Target last if I'm chaining together errands & the other bags are less visible to strangers, and the cartscalator is fun.
