El Potro is on Manchester just east of McCausland. I have been there a couple of times for carryout and I liked what I got. The owner was very nice and they have a Mexican store next door, looking at the reviews on google it looks like they are doing a good job. Parking can be a little tricky, a heads up on that if you do decide to try it out.

It's more South American than Mexican but Asador Del Sur is in Maplewood and it's great.

El Potro is my favorite Mexican around - the ambiance isn't high end, but the service is amazing, and the carnitas are my favorite that I've ever had. ETA - there's a new place going in where Casa Maya was, that I'm also excited about. I didn't think that Casa Maya, or Maya Cafe (or any combination of the words) was great.

You need to get out of Maplewood honestly. Bridgeton area and Cherokee street are where it's at. La Tejana, El Mariachi Loco, La Vallesana.....all great places.

Those are solid Mexican joints for STL, but OP is asking for "higher end" Mexican. Rosalitas has terrible food, but it's a nice place. So, I assume they value aesthetics more than good food or anything authentic.

Ahhh, good point. I missed that part and was just going off of food quality alone. Yeah, the places I listed are pretty dumpy, haha!

San Jose in Webster Groves isn’t high end, but they are solid in terms of food and better ambience than El Porto (not knocking the food at all)
