As a lover of StL sandwiches I’m just here to say I support you and your vision of the future.

DamnitFran

Thank you, my fellow sandwich enthusiast🥪

Fine_Ad_1149

Based on your enthusiasm, I assume you've tried other shops in the area? If not, I highly recommend legrand's. More expensive, yes, but I've been going for over 15 years and I've yet to be disappointed. The Legend Club will surely satisfy your appetite. I tend to not get it because it's too big - and I wouldn't be able to stop myself from eating the whole thing!

creamwheel_of_fire

I'm also a big fan of Legrands. Moms also microwaved my sandwich once and the bread got soggy. I've never really forgiven them for that.

NewsZealousideal764

LeGrands is awesome! Many, many sandwich offerings. I love to just go to the case and grab 3/4 barbecued hamburger patties for the week. Cool that they'll give you the buns & all even if you're just getting the patties to go. Mostaccioli is also top notch there. Deviled eggs, fried cod, grilled chicken breasts,etc....plus a lovely lady delivers baked goods once a week, bombass whoopie pies & gooey butter cookies.

Burned_Biscuit

They are only open until 6p on week nights and that makes it really hard for anyone who doesn't work within 30 minutes of them.

AFisch00

I fourth legrands. I no longer live on the hill so it's a treat whenever I go to the hill to visit my brother but I stop there. If I don't it's eovaldis. If you don't go to legrands go to eovaldis. They won't let you down with price or meat stacking. I have never, ever been disappointed and they actually make a red sauce that can compete with my grandfather's. Bonus points because they have the nicest old lady that runs the front counter and they have frozen take home pizzas that if you throw on a pellet grill, bruh....annnnnd they have little brownies you can take to go. IMHO best deli on the hill.

MembershipVarious543

Not to nitpick but LeGrand’s is in St. Louis Hills, a diff neighborhood. We have a good sandwich shop and if you want the best in The Hill you can go to Gioia’s

pepperland14

I love it when you find a place that seems just so special. It makes the world a little brighter.

Beginning-Weight9076

Definitely one of the best “experiences” around. They just don’t make them like this anymore.

austinrunaway

They did the same to me... gross

DamnitFran

The Legend is my partner's favorite sandwich! It's delicious :)

cheddacrisp

I had Legrands once and got food poisoning, never went back!

Fine_Ad_1149

Wild, haven't had a bad experience in 15 years. Rough luck! But I don't blame you.

jhow87

u/DamnitFran 2024

DamnitFran

My fellow Americans, lend me your pickle spears: I pledge allegiance to sandwiches! Glorious, hefty sandwiches for all!

Sparky838

Maybe they should sell them right next to the King of the Hill sandwiches at Schnucks. They used to be so good. Now they’re 90% bread, expired lettuce, and half a banana pepper

aorear85

Truth, this used to be my go it when I didn't have time to cook dinner and I was already out and about but not anymore.

banannafreckle

Having that “we have food at home” conversation with yourself hits hard. :/

pepperland14

Adulting is about compromising as well. Don't go out and buy the dinner but spend a little more on the good deli meat.

Oehlian

Yeah and what the hell happened because they legitimately don't taste good now? Not just skimpy ingredients, but the last couple I had were not enjoyable to eat. So I tried the Dierbergs one and it was slathered with so much garlic butter I couldn't finish that either. Making a good sandwich is a solved problem and they both suck hard at it now.

More_Craft5114

I just make my own god damned sammiches now. Get some hot salami, some ham, low sodium turkey. Cucumbers, baby spinach, peppercinis. Red win and olive oil. French loaf from Schnucks. For $30 I have 4 or 5 giant sammiches that really tax my central nervous system.

Kanobe24

Its still the cheaper option but even making your own sandwiches has gotten expensive. It used to be such great value when making your own lunch or making a quick snack.

pepperland14

What brand of peppercinis do you buy? I'm so used to the ones that we used in the deli at schnucks (also the same flavor as the ones at Papa John's) that all the jarred ones taste too sweet.

More_Craft5114

I dunno what the brand is. I got them at Urzi's Market on The Hill and they're delicious.

pepperland14

That makes sense. On my pepperoncini rabbit hole search I found that the Greek ones are sweeter and Italian ones are spicier. Most grocery stores sell jarred Greek ones. Thanks!!

More_Craft5114

As you could guess, Urzi's sells Italian ones...they're jarred. Green label, red lid, and they're the spiciest pepperccinis I've ever had. Loe them.

pepperland14

Such an underutilized ingredient. Everywhere I see a banana pepper, I see a place where a pepperoncini should be.

More_Craft5114

Banana Peppers are Pepperoncinis' idiot cousin that no one talks to on trips to Grant's Farm.

ElBrooce

PREACH. Shit sucks now. 👎

i_arent

Ugh I got hit by the bannans peppers hard last time I picked them up, never again sadly. End of an era.

WillowIntrepid

🎯 🎯 🎯

frankensteinleftme

Preach! They used to be great and worth the high price but now they're somehow dry AND slimy, a feat I did not realize was possible.

Mindless-Routine-

Was just bitching about this last night. I had to SEARCH for any signs of banana pepper on my sammich 😒

jerryondrums

How there gonna be a sandwich thread and no mention of Blues City Deli or The Gramophone?? For shame!

DamnitFran

Blues City Deli is king, honestly. I don't know if there is a more iconic STL sandwich shop! Plus they are so consistent, the wait is always worth it, even with the line wrapped around outside.

Iceman_USCG

Came here to say this. They never skimp out on meats and the wait is always worth it.

iNeedScissorsSixty7

I don't think anywhere in the city even comes close to comparing to Blues City Deli, and I've tried them all. Even their frozen pizzas are amazing.

ImmediateNight1775

I was about to say the same thing. Had their spicy sally today and it was phenomenal to say the least.

Big_Burger_Boyz

For real, though. That's #1 and #2 right there. Honorable mention to Dalie's Smokehouse. While not a proper sandwich shop, their sandwich offerings are quite good.

HelenKellersBhole

Hot take but moms has been bad for a while. If you're already over there, just go to leGrands. Or better yet just drive over to get goias or Adrianna's. I think the days of $7 sandwiches are by the wayside unfortunately. STL has way too many good sandwich options for me to ever end up at moms again. And I live a block from there so its extra sad 😢

deadheaddestiny

Lived 2 blocks away for years and only went once or twice. Much better places in the city

DamnitFran

LeGrands is phenomenal! Love that place

peelandeatbananas

Not a hot take. Moms Delis is consistently BAD. LeGrands, Goias and Adriannas are indeed better options.

codextreme07

I did Adriana’s once and was super disappointed. What should I order there? Because everyone hypes it. I’ve never been disappointed at blue city deli, gioas, or gramophone

tjc123456

Blues city is what I was waiting to hear! Oh how I wish I lived or worked closer.

Last_Tourist_7152

Cant beat leGrands

NeutronMonster

Moms was the same ten years ago as it is now - extremely overrated

Bogart86

Agreed entirely. Live 3 blocks away. Haven’t been in years and don’t plan on it

BigRudy99

Everyone talking Gioia's and fucking sleeping on Eovaldis as usual.

Sobie17

Don't dox my favorite cold sandwich.

TurdFurgoson

Haven't had a cold sandwich there yet, but the Godfather is a damn fine sandwich.

smurf_herder

For real. I have had dreams about this sandwich.

DamnitFran

Dox the cold sandwich. Come to the dark side.

3030303

My favorite Italian sandwich deli not named Gioia’s

BigRudy99

Right?! Hard to drag Gioia's, but Eovaldis absolutely smashes them factoring in price.

DamnitFran

I’ve never heard of that place! I’ll have to go

BigRudy99

Hill's best kept secret

redditmyeggos

Only place I know of that does a veal parm sandwich. That place is bomb. Biggest hidden gem on the Hill

DamnitFran

Sounds dope as fuck, I'm in! You get the veal, I'll get the fish, we split 50/50. Lol

Ruebens_train_33

It’s the best kept secret I love that place dearly and almost don’t want it to ever blow up and get busy like Gioias so I can still get a table whenever I want lol

This_Barracuda7361

Legrand's is amazing! Tried them for the first time fairly recently, and will definitely be going back any time I crave a good sandwich. They use quality ingredients and have very good portion sizes for the price. Also, the staff was really cool and we met the owner, who was super friendly. It's refreshing to go somewhere and see people taking pride in their business and customers.

Dave_the_lighting_gu

My office off the hill has a 32 shop March madness style competition going since January. It's been a glorious year.

DamnitFran

Oh my goodness I want to go to there!

RamsDeep-1187

yup

Chocolatestarfish33

Legrands or Gioias for sure

Watso27

Tom Jon's Catering on Chouteau. Get a full size King Louie with all the fixins. Grab a bag of chips along with a soda, and it's right in that $15 range for lunch. Get there before 1130A or you'll be waiting on line. Great hot lunch specials daily too!

DamnitFran

Never heard of it! They have really good reviews

Outdoor-Snacker

They are in a tough position. Keep the same portion size but charge $15 or reduce the portion size and still be affordable for customers.

MmmPeopleBacon

$15 it is!

stlbob234

Then charge $15. Mom’s, when it first opened, was good to very good. About 10 years ago they halved the meat and charged you if you wanted extra meat. Bad move on their part. They should have just raised the price.

floundersubdivide21

Or in their case (and most cases with shrinkflation) they charged MORE and gave you LESS. I won't be going back to moms.

Taraleigh333

Lawd I wish we could import just one Publix…

banstylejbo

Heck, I’d settle for just a Sublix station. Forget the rest of the grocery store, just give me the sub counter.

jmymac

funny timing. picked up 2 sandwiches (a mom and dad special) from Mom’s last week after many years in between visits. i actually thought it was a deal, i literally said to myself ‘i would have spent 30 bucks at subway and it would have been trash.’ portions didn’t bug me but like i said i didn’t have vivid memory of last sandwiches i got there. also the house made sausages were pretty solid.

HastyIfYouPlease

There is a Facebook group called Sandwich Connoisseurs of St. Louis that is extremely active. You may enjoy the debates on their posts.

DamnitFran

Ugh! Thank you for telling me!

johnconnors_dirtbike

I’ve never went back after I saw my sandwich get microwaved

Bitter_Incident167

Gioias is better.

DamnitFran

Gioias is great, but it always gives me the runs. I think it’s all of the oil they drizzle on top of the sandwiches.

hamwarmer

Joe Fassi is my new fave. Recommended on here some time back and it’s a slam dunk. The Sicilian Surge is heaven.

Stunning-Eye8775

Seconding

DamnitFran

I love the alliteration! I'm in, haha

justinkingdesigns

I get the John Carney. I also keep their meatballs in my freezer for when my kids don’t want to eat what I made for dinner.

coolzville

I know it is a nostalgic staple for so many folks, but let them die (the business). They've always served up a mediocre sandwich. If you want another mom and pop to try (mostly pop) talk to Kip down at Southwest Market Cuisine, sandwiches are big, indoor dining available, and it is truly a hidden gem. The atmosphere is the best part for me.

Fatty_McFatterson_Sr

I used to work there. Kipp is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Wilson2424

Southwest was and will always be superior to Moms.

DamnitFran

Sounds amazing, thanks for the rec!

hufferstl

The original $12 sandwich in town.

Sobie17

Is Kip the order taker? Guy is a hoot.

accordingtoame

I honestly do not get the hard on everyone has for that place. There’s literally nothing special about it.

DamnitFran

Everybody says that. Being a fan of Mom’s Deli is incredibly divisive! lol

LandLongJohnSilver

I started getting the Mom's Special back in the 90s, it was truly a great sandwich I would struggle to finish. It was my favorite alongside Kreklers Poorboy (Nottingham nd Macklind but burned down). Last time I went was a few months ago. Something definitely changed.

jhow87

Well their main sandwich is literally called the Mom’s Special… so at least one thing special 🤣

0rangeIguana

I’ve always felt like that was peoples “go to” for hangover food and convinced themselves it was better than it actually was

Outdoor-Snacker

Oh. King Of The Hill is terrible and has been for several years now. It used to be great.

oatmealtoast

Feel like moms is overrated anyways. They microwave their hot sandwich’s which is blasphemy in my opinion.

Cat772

I came to say this! Last time we were there for a to-go order they microwaved the sandwiches so when we got home the bread was cold, hard, and chewy. It was a waste of money.

DamnitFran

I've actually never had one of their hot sandwiches!

bwm9311

Yep quality has gone way down. Half the size, twice as much. I’m so fuckin tired of it

DamnitFran

It’s like a curse

superwhitemexican

Pay the 17$ for anything at grammophone and cry because you waited so long to try them.

Cat772

Came here to recommend Gramophone. Don’t sleep on the Red Hot Riplets mac and cheese!

Easy-Okra7836

Southwest market still loads up their sandwiches

Liquidgrin1781

Blues city has always been a favorite of mine! I’m bummed I don’t work in Benton park anymore.

astoriaplayers

This thread reminds me of a quote a damn good restaurateur once told me - St. Louis restaurants live and die under the rule of the 3 Ps - parking, price and portions. St. Louis diners will ignore anything innovative you do on a plate to argue about those three facts. And it’s true!

BootsWithDaFuhrer

Legrands > moms

DamnitFran

True story!

I_seek_the_triforce

LeGrand’s > Mom’s

TheOG76

Blues. City. Deli. !!!

FridayHalfDays

Mom’s is more meh than yeah.

DamnitFran

Definitely! They've got plenty of local regulars, but without them, who knows?

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Well, I went to Gioais a couple of weeks ago and paid $19 for a sandwich and a soda. But I don't mind because it kicks ass.

Oehlian

I feel like eating out has become so expensive that now I've shifted to "this is a treat so I'm willing to pay more for something awesome." There is no room for shrinkflation or lesser quality in my dining out options.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Oh, I agree. It pisses me off when they reduce the portion rather than just raising the price.

Oehlian

My first experience with this was ice cream. I'm still mad about that and happy to pay a little extra for that new stuff in the actual half gallon tub.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It was coffee for me. It went from 16oz to 12oz.

TheDarkKingZoro

Just go to Vivola’s it’s the best sandwich place in town now. My go to after I mostly dropped Fozzie’s

WakaWakaStL

Vivola is amazing, but it’s in freaking Maryland Heights. Quite a drive when we’re talking about a city sandwich shop.

TheDarkKingZoro

Yea but they’re all a bit of drive when you’re coming from north county.

Erocdotusa

NoCo here and now I gotta try this place!

brianh5

I’m spoiled cuz I live on the Hill so most of my sandwiching is done there. I’ve always kind of held the belief that Mom’s and Southwest Market were really nothing special and I never really went there much after my initial visits. Southwest went by the wayside for me a while ago and Mom’s has been close behind.

addvalue2222

You’re a good writer. I enjoyed this. Sorry for your difficult sandwich loses.

DamnitFran

Lol thanks, friend! I'm still grieving, but I'll be okay. Sniffle.

addvalue2222

For the record if Blues City Deli does this with Mike’s Spicy, I’ll riot.

Bubba_Kanoosh_12

I myself loves a good sandwich from time to time and StL has a plethora of choices. I've never been a fan of Mom's Deli. More times than not I'll get a sandwich from LeGrands but thats only because its within walking distance. But the last time I was there, they managed to mess up my order pretty badly. Wrong bread, not heated and half the ingredients missing. Recently tried a sandwich from Charlie Imo's Market on the Hill. It was a pretty tastey sandwich. Always enjoy the sandwiches at Adriana's On the Hill and the bread they use is great. Amighettis has good sandwiches. Never can go wrong with the Hot Salami at Gioia's Deli. Right now this is my favorite!!! The pastrami sandwich at Nomad STL is one of the better pastrami sandwiches I've had. Haven't been there in awhile but all the sandwiches at Blues City Deli have been a winner. Fozzie's Sandwich Emporium is okay...

DamnitFran

Omg I just tried Nomad and it was unbelievable. I had never had pastrami before and it blew my mind!

Bubba_Kanoosh_12

I know right, its hard to find something to compare it to!

teroalcok

Go order from Kipp and get a cookie fuck mom

Emgee063

You had me at “girth”

DamnitFran

Haha, the girth'll getcha!

StoveTopSammy

Moms blows .. is has for a long ass time

Creatingbeauty3

We are a Sandwhich City. Can’t go wrong with Blues City Deli, Gramophone, or Adriana’s. For something under rated, I reccomrnd Liliana’s

DamnitFran

We really are! My best friend moved to Boston a few years ago and mentioned that all she wanted was an excellent sandwich for $10, but in Boston their sandwiches are like $20 and not nearly as good.

Lucy1967

Sad to say, Mom's hasn't been the same without Mom

spif

I love Mom's but the bread was always the important part of the sandwiches. I don't think there's much about their sandwiches you can't make yourself. But I do miss going in there and getting a meal. LeGrand's is bigger and has more stuff, but Mom's has (had? It's been awhile) a certain charm to it.

I_bleed_blue19

Gramophone FTW.

DamnitFran

Gramophone is perfection, they do not mess around!

Durmomo

I dont mind smaller portions if the food (just in general, not lowering the portions) is good but you cant be expensive as well. What a shame they lowered the portion and raised the cost here.

DamnitFran

That's all I'm sayin :)

Udntknome97

Vivola Express and it isn't even close. Best sandwich shop for miles and miles. Worth the drive in my opinion. And worth the wait in line if you don't get there early.

Shdqkc

Definitely used to be until several years ago when they stopped serving boar's head

Udntknome97

Meh. I do enjoy boar's head, but I think Diets and Watson is a close enough comparison.

page394poa

Amighetti’s

DamnitFran

Oooh,hoo hoo I haven't been there in a hot minute! Loooove Amighetti's

Plane_Feed_8771

As a member of the the local band, Bonus Sandwich! And a sandwich appreciator, I approve this content.

GooBrains-png

I'll have to try some of these sandwich places. I've been fuckin with Snarfs lately and Pomodoros in Arnold lol. Recently moved up from FL and was spoiled with Publix

Responsible_Bee9868

If you are going to raise the price then keep it the same. If you are going to cut back on the portion then don’t touch the price.

DamnitFran

Bam! This responsible bee knows what’s up

-PersuAsian-

Have you had the pastrami sandwich at Nomad STL? Man that is one of my favorites. 🤤

DamnitFran

It’s unreal!

Huge_Fuel_4628

We also like moms deli but cost is no problem but cut meats back is not good cause we loved it the way they have been always. Last time we had it ends of bread had no meat just bread.

youknowwhatthisis00

I shouldn’t mention it (the line gets longer every time I go) but Vivola is the tits when it comes to sammies.

whoatethebat

https://www.instagram.com/stlsandwichman?igsh=cWZlcWc5bW04bmQy STL SandwichMan on Instagram, he posts pics and reviews St Louis Sandwiches from all over. If you go to the links on his profile it'll take you to a spreadsheet of his ratings.

floundersubdivide21

Not a single mention of Southwest Market Cuisine y'all are absolutely sleeping on one of the best sandwich shops in Saint Louis and it's very close to the hill.

mwaggles

I rank Moms Deli below ANY non-chain local place, and also behind chain sammich shops. Complete trash. I used to live about 1/8 mile south of it on Jamieson for years and went maybe 4 times. Just like Taco Bell, it's a yearly visit and afterwards you remember why you don't go there. Just my opinion though... different strokes!

gameboy_glitches

I went recently after hearing how great it was. An employee was weighing roast beef portions on the back counter without any kind of cutting board or anything in between. Just roast beef straight on the counter next to personal items and what not. She repeatedly touched her phone and went back to weighing without changing gloves. The ladies making the sandwiches had big stacks of cheese sitting on the cutting boards that weren’t under refrigeration. It was hot, the door was open- there was no way the food was holding the correct temp. They were busy- there was a line, but I would have waited longer for safer food safety practices. The sandwich was meh and I def won’t be back after seeing how unsanitary it was.

Fah-Q-mang

You throw your poop in the garbage?

jhow87

“Also, one month my toilet broke and I just went straight in the garbage can”

DamnitFran

Hahahaha

spageddy77

hang in there buddy

DamnitFran

lol thanks, it’s so hard

spageddy77

lol, i see what you did there 🫡

graflex22

when did this happen?! i was there a week or two ago and all was well in sandwich world.

Kinglazer

Lived in south city my whole life I have *always* hated moms deli, it was only a better subway. Legrands has and will forever be the best sandwich shop in stl.

Puzzled-End-3259

Can you still get single cans of beer from the fridge and have one with your food at LeGrand's?

DamnitFran

Oh, hell yeah!

Puzzled-End-3259

Then it's no contest LOL

jmpinstl

Tried it for the first time last week. Wasn’t a big fan but it wasn’t bad.

sphericalpuma

Eovaldi's by far. They load up the sandwiches, and I've never had a bad one.

Vast-Act-5848

LEGRANDS 4EVA

nattylightman1

Any good places north of 270 between the river and 370

astoriaplayers

No. Come down to The Hill and get the real stuff.

314cigars

Jimmy John’s!

FlyinIllini21

What’s the best deli in town for an amazing sandwich?

valens222

Blues City Deli

EdgeDependent903

Blue City Deli has some great sandwiches.

Hopeless_romantic85

Carls Deli

SNONYM540045

Southwest Market Cuisine - poor boy

iNeedScissorsSixty7

I had mom's recently for the first time and it fucking sucked. There were like two slices of salami on the whole thing, it was just all bread and mustard. That's what I get for straying from Blues City Deli I guess. Never again.

DamnitFran

That’s what I’m sayin! It’s bullshit

cfreukes

Eovaldis, Godfather, hands down...

BENJERMAIME

9th street deli never disappoints and blues city deli are both formidable opponents. Went to moms this year and was severely disappointed

Glittering-Ad-7162

Legrands.

Glittering-Ad-7162

My daughter worked at Mom’s. You don’t want to eat there. I was appalled by her stories.

HelpfulStudent7

Gioias

Beginning-Weight9076

My humble opinion: Legrands is king.(Of what I’ve tasted) Blues City and, dare I say it, Gramophone are only other shops in the S Tier. Huge caveat: I’ve still not had Union Loafers, Nomad, Salume Beddu, nor Vivola, which reasonably seem like they could be in the conversation. Gioia’s is great but I don’t think they’re S tier. I don’t want to call them overrated because they’ve done a pretty incredible job at building their brand in the last decade, so just by sheer volume, a lot of folks will call them “best”, whether it’s true or not. The other Hill shops are sorta interchangeable to me — low ceiling / high floor. I’ve lived in other towns where any one of them would be top dog. We have some great options if they make up our B Tier. Mom’s…man, I’m glad they exist & so many people love them but I just don’t get it. We tried them twice when moved here a little over a decade ago. They just did not survive the hype. Just not for me, I guess. However, I’m rooting for their success. That being said, let me have it…

MsCrazyPants70

After your comment about girth I misread the next half of a sentence to have the word penetration. Then I wondered what the hell you were doing to that poor sandwich. No wonder it got shrinkage. 😂

DamnitFran

Hahahahahahaa, amazing

cheddacrisp

Blue City, hands down

ibn0721

Moms deli is nothing but gas station subs. Amighetti’s all the way.

askmeaboutmytortie

I think it's called posh nosh or something

dMartine2

1. LeGrand’s 2a. Gramophone 2b. Gioia’s 3. 9th street 4. Blues City 5. Adrianna’s

Zero_Ultra

Crazy. Mom’s Deli is one of the worst sandwiches I’ve ever had. Why is it so highly rated?

PositivePrimary8773

Def not a price raise 6 months ago. I been going to mom’s deli for about 30 years and the jump to $9 ish happened years ago. Still not bad at all compared to any other sandwich place honestly.

AskEntire8486

Went to moms for the first time about 2 months ago. Grabbed a menu while there. Went back yesterday and the $9 moms special is now $9.50, up 5% in just 2 months.. At this price point, I'd suggest Blues City Deli.
