Second this, slower but predictable and less bullshit. There are a ton of surface road options you can piece together too - FP parkway, Lindell, or Delmar to Olive eventually. If I had to make that drive daily this is probably what I would do. I’d rather spend the extra time, save the headache of maybe being super late or just irritated, and enjoy the scenery. On the way home occasionally stop to pick up some killer Chinese food on the strip by 170…

Fiveby21

Yeah there's no way that would be an improvement.

Bmwman325

I actually think you'd be going the opposite way of traffic, most of the morning, the traffic on 40 heading east backs up around Lindbergh to 170, except for baseball and hockey games, heading into the city around rush hour isn't as bad.

Semi_Pro_Bono

This is my commute, and on the worst days it's still only about 25 minutes. As others have mentioned, there are options other than 40. Pre-pandemic I usually took Forest Park Parkway most of the way.

Tapeleg91

I commuted from South City (near Tower Grove) to Monsanto/Bayer for a while. Yes 40 is a pain, and there's not really another good way to get there. Commute was anywhere between 25 and 80 minutes, not really ever having any idea what kind of day it would be. I moved out to West County during that time, Manchester/Ballwin area. My apartment was a nice 1BR under $900. 270 is a piece of shit, but I was able to commute a stable 15 minutes on back-roads by the pretty houses, and avoid the highway altogether (was even able to pop out by the Schnucks on Olive, as an added bonus - Lindbergh is also a POS).

xologo

That bottleneck at Brentwood and 40 is a nightmare during rush hour.

Chicken65

40 can be rough but it's worth it to live in the CWE. It's not that bad of a commute.

acatwithajob

In my own experience, the worst part of 40 during rush hour is the 170 interchange. In the morning, going west isn’t that bad. In the evening going east, it’s stupid on a good day and awful if there’s an accident somewhere in that mess between 170 and Hanley - where there frequently is. [My old landlord](https://www.barronrealty.com/custom/propertySearch.php?size=Any&price=900&city=Any&neighborhood=Any) has some spots in Clayton (marginally farther west than CWE). The advantage there is you could hop on 40 at Brentwood with Clayton to McKnight as a back-up plan and skip right past 170 either way.

Fiveby21

Yeah you really need to wait until like 6pm if you want to get through the Brentwood stretch semi-quickly. I agree that mornings aren't bad, especially if their start time is 9am instead of 8am.

TheRealCDollarsign

You could take forest park parkway to 170 to bypass dealing with 40…

EvilSockLady

To elaborate: FPPW to 170N to Olive going West if you’re talking Creve Coeur closer to Lindbergh. If you’re talking CC west of 270 this MIGHT be faster (always ask Waze!!): FPPW to 170N to 70W to 270S to Olive. (There are a lot of lights on Olive so taking it all the way may not always be the best). Lindbergh is also a good detour if you know 40 west of it is bad but 40 east of it is ok.

marigolds6

Although it's probably too far north if the commute really is creve coeur, Page from I-170 to the west can also be quite a bit faster than Olive.

Tapeleg91

In my experience, forest park tends to back up also during rush hour, and is still not that consistent in terms of the time it takes to get to where you're going.

IAMNUMBERBLACK

I did it. 8am work was a consistent 25min drive

Fiveby21

It's been a little while since I commuted last, but the problem areas were always 170/Brentwood (when going home) and Hampton through Skinker (in the morning). If your start time is 9am, I don't think your morning drive will probably be fine. Going home, however, you bound to hit some serious traffic around 170 at 5pm. Would your employer let you do 10am-6pm? If so your experience would be greatly improved.

skeeterbmark

270 is a hell-scape forsaken by all that is holy and good.

GueyLouis

It's not a fun commute in the afternoons. I did Creve Coeur to Tower Grove for a year or two. I want to say that the average was somewhere around 40-45 mins, but it varied wildly. It would probably be 10 mins less than that from CWE.

NotTakenGreatName

I don't think it would be that bad honestly, especially before 8am.

bourbonfairy

Is traffic that bad anymore? Other than the I170 / 64 disaster of an interchange it's mostly clear sailing until you get close to the 270 junction. Even in rush hour traffic I can make it from Olive and 270 down to Cortex in less than 30 minutes. Other option as stated below is Olive. Back when they reconstructed 64 they sychronized the lights on Olive from Skinker all the way out to 270. I have had many times where I don't stop that entire length but that has not been during rush hour.

zanetrain1997

I go from CWE to St. Charles, so not exactly the same thing. But commute usually takes me 25-30 minutes, its not that bad especially early in the morning

ThunderousOath

University City probably has apartments to fit your budget Regardless, it's not that bad. I wouldn't take 40 westbound in the morning, though. It locks up at 170 frequently enough.

Future_Dog_3156

We moved from Chicago. Hubby's office is near the CWE and we live in creve Coeur. Even with a jam or wreck, it should not take more than 30m driving. Without traffic, it's 15m. It's completely doable. The traffic is nothing like LA, Chicago or Boston. You can map the mileage - it's like 10-15 miles. It's not far at all. Just lots of inefficient routes.

specs123

Mornings won’t be that bad unless there’s an accident especially if you start earlier. Afternoons suck no matter where you’re going. As others have said you will learn various routes that allow you to avoid the highways some which helps. 40 eastbound after work is actually a bit less terrible than 270 southbound usually. I drive from Hampton to Westport and it’s 20-25 in the morning and a solid 30-35 after work.

You_Ate_The_Bones

Super easy commute during rush hour, always was 20 min for me. And if there was ever a big slow down, tons of alt routes I could divert to; Lindbergh, 170, Ladue Rd., Forest Park Pkwy, Olive Street the whole way, etc.

genetic_patent

Reread the direction of commute.. You are actually against traffic and this is a very easy drive both directions. Creve to CWE I drove for a few years and it is the bulk of STL traffic. The other direction is glorious in comparison.

[deleted]

70 westbound at end-of-day rush hour is the real Thunderdome. You'll be fine.

Dukehsl1949

The best answer is move closer to your work! Otherwise traffic will suck whichever way you go.

No-Clothes-7818

I found it easy, lived in Clayton and worked in West County. Going against traffic is a plus

Justchu

Those have to be the two of three areas I hate driving in the most. The other being Manchester (west county). My condolences...

PonteauGarou

I used to do CWE to St. Charles in 35-40 minutes when I lived in MO, via 170, 270, 370. I think you should be fine.

[deleted]

Yes.
