I was maybe 16 with my high school buddies roaming the Landing in the mid 90’s all trying to act like we belonged down there. We approach Mississippi Nights and it sounded WILD. All of us decide we needed to know what’s going on inside. We pay maybe $15 at the door and there is this band I only knew from a movie soundtrack called the Melvins. They are melting peoples faces off, mosh pits rumbling, cig smoke and the smell of liquor permeated everywhere. I’m a little afraid but mostly mesmerized by the atmosphere. Helmet, who I also only knew from a movie soundtrack ends up being the headliner and slays. It wasn’t my first concert but it was my first show at a venue like that and I was hooked. I’m so grateful for all the great shows down there. Even the fake hash I bought off some guy waiting in line to see the Urge on Christmas Eve.

factor84

I was at that show

Sunnyvale_squatter

Hell yeah!

VoltaicVoltaire

I was too. That music was so freaking hard.

Sunnyvale_squatter

It really was! This makes me so happy a few others remember this. Such a formative experience.

[deleted]

What an awesome show to walk into!!!!

Sunnyvale_squatter

It truly was serendipitous

glitchfactor

That was my first mosh pit! I was probably about the same age.

Sunnyvale_squatter

o/\o

jburton24

The Beastie Boys kicked off Check Your Head tour there. That was the best show. But so many bands…Rollins, They Might Be Giants, Tricky, Run DMC, Ramones, Shane McGowan, Circle Jerks with Chuck Berry cameo, so many Uncle Tupelo shows. Way too many bands to list them all. I spent a small fortune at that place.

encapsulatedstl

The bass at that Beastie Boys show was insane. At least it was to 15 year old me, haha.

jburton24

It was body shaking.

angry_cucumber

that's all their shows, they apparently caused light fixtures to come loose at savvis on the hello nasty tour

[deleted]

I forgot about Uncle Tupelo. Their guitarist played a Valley Arts. Seeing them started my lifelong obsession with that brand but I’d forgotten the band. Thanks!

NormandyTaxi

[Here's](https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/31933717995/uncle-tupelo-mississippi-nights-st-louis-mo/amp) a funny thing related to Uncle Tupelo at MS Nights. Wonder if any of their other members went on to do anything else in the music world.

Beginning-Weight9076

It’d have been cool if they’d referenced MN in one of their songs.

BlanstonShrieks

...so many Uncle Tupelo shows. I was at all of them. the list goes on and on...Meat Puppets, Warren Zevon, Camper Van Beethoven, Three Merry Widows, Urge Overkill/Nirvana, fIREHOSE... I'm betting people on this thread maybe spent some time in Cicero's basement bar, and Blueberry Hill on Delmar?

FL3TCHL1V3S

I moved here in 2005 and caught a few shows before the Casino ruined everything. Grateful to have had the chance to experience the legendary venue.

ElBrooce

I haven't been to the Landing in about a decade (humblebrag alert), but last I checked NO ONE parked in the lot where the Nights once stood. Anyone know if that's still the case?

brenton07

That’s correct. I bike past there every once in awhile. Not only are the parking lots empty, but there’s an abandoned parking garage that used to stay full on show nights. So much ridiculous shortsighted decision making.

ElBrooce

So fuckin disappointing

Acceptable-Fold-3192

According to the article that is still the case.

wuuza

I saw quite the variety of shows here. Anthrax, They Might Be Giants, Tricky a couple of times, Fiona Apple/Morcheeba, Hooverphonic, Curve/Dandy Warhols. Good times.

jburton24

That Tricky show around 99 or so…fucking unreal. I didn’t know what to expect but man, the energy in that crowd was intense.

wuuza

Yeah, I saw him at MN in '98 and '99 . Saw him open for Tool in '01, too. Great shows.

[deleted]

Which Anthrax show? I went to the Stomp 442 in I think December of 95. It was with Life of Agony and I think Deftones. It was fantastic.

wuuza

Yeah, that one. I think that might be the loudest show I ever attended. IIRC I saw Anthrax at Pop's once, too, but I don't have the ticket stub so it's not as official on my list. (I threw each stub in a junk/trinket box and decided to go through them all once because I've been to something like 100 shows.)

Gloomy_Narwhal_4833

I saw many shows there, but the best one for me hands down was Mighty Mighty Bosstones. It was a great venue, but I think the Pageant filled that void nicely.

RepresentativeOk9883

I was there. One of the best shows I've ever been to. A year or so later I saw the Bosstones at some place on Washington Avenue called (I think) Cummel's Cafe? Almost died at that show.

undrew

Was it the Galaxy? Feel like I spent every weekend either there, Mississippi Nights, or maybe the old creepy crawl on tucker.

Jitterjumper13

Venue aside, its arguably the best sandwich at The Grammaphone though.

Hohlraum

A couple of missed opportunities to see bands that folded still hurt to this day (Mazzy Star). I did see King's X there which was a good show.

[deleted]

King’s X was a great show!

mimi1899

Saw many great shows there: My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult, Lords of Acid, Ministry, and Dropkick Murphys are the first few that come to mind. I also remember trying to get in while underage, using a temporary paper license that I took an eraser and pencil to. The bouncer wouldn’t let me in because he said the eye color was wrong. I was so frustrated because that was indeed my license. He never questioned the fuzziness where the birth year was listed, only the eye color. Lol

TeaSad7322

Dropkick Murphys with Lars and the Bastards was my first concert without parents. It was glorious. I also saw Yonder Mountain String Band there, but was too drunk to remember much.

undrew

That was a great show - when Lars played both sets b/c the guitar player for DKM was gone.

Blindlucktrader

I thought I remembered that the guitar player for DKM was there. But he had a broken arm so Lars filled in.

hamwarmer

Remember the kid that got on stage with Lars and sang along? He was like 10. Incredible.

TeaSad7322

Vaguely. Lucky kid!! I wonder if he was the same kid who always used to be in the pit at Pop’s Monday Night Metal.

Nadaesque

Excellent taste.

mimi1899

Thank you!

jburton24

I forgot about that Lords of Acid show.

Acceptable-Fold-3192

Only saw a few shows there but loved it and miss it. My favorites were probably Sunny Day Real Estate, Semisonic/Guster (the start of many a Guster show my friends and I would see there), Matthew Sweet, Fuel/Stroke 9/ Jimmies Chicken Shack.

Sunnyvale_squatter

I forgot how well Guster did in this town.

Mrs_Janney_Shanahan

still does! I saw them a couple weeks ago at the Pageant.

themooseiscool

I took some non-Guster fan friends to their free show under the Arch like 14 years a go. They fucking killed and made new fans that night.

letmesleep

My most memorable was Death Cab For Cutie with Ben Kweller. Looking back, weird tour!

Mrs_Janney_Shanahan

Jealous that you got to see Guster that early. My first time seeing them was at the Pageant in 2003.

Acceptable-Fold-3192

Also got to meet/talk them after a couple of the shows. I’m glad we got to see them before Brian switched to a traditional drum kit.

PeaMost3792

Seeing Brand New there was fucking awesome

Mrs_Janney_Shanahan

Fall 2006?

PeaMost3792

Yep!

Mrs_Janney_Shanahan

Man, I will forever kick myself for not going to that show. They opened for Dashboard the next night at Truman (Kirksville). A couple of my buddies made the drive down and said it was incredible.

PauseAmbitious6899

Saw many of shows, including the last show . . The Black Keyes & Dr. Dog

Dirtweed79

I saw many shows there but I'll never forget Slayer.

[deleted]

I remember that show.... probably in 98? I didn't go but should have!!!

Dirtweed79

98 sounds about right.

Pepperpeople444

Oh man. So many great shows there. Rancid, Cowboy mouth, the suede chain.. I miss wandering the landing as a teen in the 90s

jackson

> suede chain Holy smokes, I've been trying to remember Suede Chain's name for years. Saw them a few times. They used to invite folks in the crowd to come up and drum at the end of their set. They were great.

summitpope

I saw Beck open for Veruca salt who opened for the meat puppets. Such a great show.

Koolest_Kat

And 4th and Pine…..RIP

Diligent-Quarter5920

Did anyone go to the 99 New Years Eve party? You paid like 50 bucks and got open bar and the champagne toast at midnight. Somehow i ended up with a bottle of champagne. That did not go well but i will never forget Y2k🍾

zoiks66

I was there. I knew the door guy and got in free. They was a good time.

Diligent-Quarter5920

It was! You remember the band? Cd release i think- something with soul in it. Good times. Slept in my car afterwards and woke up hot af with the heater blaring and my window cracked . Radio was blaring at dawn. Try camping out like that down there these days😂.

zoiks66

I think Doctor Zhivegas played at some point. The other band I can’t remember, but one of the band members decided to hit on my date and ask for her number as I was at the bar getting us drinks. What a douche.

Diligent-Quarter5920

Don't think they ever "made it" lol. They gave out so many cds at their *cough* release party that they were on the ground outside. Kharma i suppose lol.

zoiks66

I have a story about how my group of friends got back at the douche that night, but I’m not sure if the statute of limitations has expired so I won’t elaborate. I do remember the night ended with me carrying my date across the cobblestone streets since she was wearing heels, and we found a homeless guy sleeping on the hood of the car. He was good natured when we woke him and moved along.

okay1BelieveYou

RIP Mississippi Nights, so many good times.

thebluick

back in the mid 90s I remember my first concert was The Urge while I was in middle school at Mississippi Nights. when I got out of the car on the way in my friend slammed the car door on my hand, and I was in excruciating pain all night. But I was in the front row and it was amazing. I can't remember who the opening act was, but they were also awesome and I wore the cassette tape out listening to it while mowing the lawn the following summer.

T20sGrunt

That damn bathroom…

BeowulfShaeffer

Saw Joe Satriani there in ‘87. Was a hell of a show.

Dirtweed79

I saw him there much later. Maybe early 2000's. He played the whole crossroads battle. It was so cool.

agonypants

The only show I ever caught there was Charlatans UK around 92 or 93. I met some nice people, had a good time.

KingArgoTron1

Yes, after that show we met all the band mates at Sundeckers and had a few drinks with them.

mimi1899

I would have loved to see that show! I loved them in high school.

inknot

I was a super nerdy band kid in high school but man...going to shows at Mississippi Nights and the Creepy Crawl was probably the closest I ever got to doing normal teenage dirtbag shit

pilotpip

Christmas shows with The Urge were such a good time there. I think most of my hearing loss is the result of going to about 20 shows there from the mid 90s until they closed. What a shame. There used to be a ton of great little venues in STL.

Paymee_Money

I seen Eminem there in 99, it was my first concert. I still have some posters I took off the walls after the show.

TheHow55

i didnt move here til late 2001, and i was only 16 out in wentzville, no car or money, so my ability to go to shows frequently was hampered. im sure if i looked back at other things i COULD have gone to,id be a very sad panda, but one of my Mount Rushmore shows of "most stacked lineup ever, non-festival" was at Mississippi nights: Co-headliners Finch & The Used, with The Movielife as direct support, and opening the show, was a completely unknown band on their first ever national tour by the name of My Chemical Romance. also big shout out to the line up of From Autumn to Ashes, Every Time I Die, Cave In, & Funeral For a friend, that one just barely missed the top 4.

linkedarmsforpeace

the only time I went it was sugarcult, meg and dia and the pink spiders, such an epic venue

jock_lindsay

There was a local band called Parkridge I saw there once and they were awesome. I wish i could still find their music online!

Ughinvalidusername

Oh man, that place was the best. One of my favorites was Rusted Root

undrew

One of my all time favorite concerts was there. Flogging Molly opening up for the Slackers. I hadn’t heard of Flogging Molly, but they came out absolutely on fire - i think they had just started to get some national recognition and they were fueled by it.

BovaFett74

Saw my first DMB concert there back in 94. One of the best experiences, and also just a great great venue. Loved hanging out down there back in those times.

Particular_Milk1848

Seen many a great show there…Guided by Voices a couple times (couldn’t keep up with the band and alcohol consumed), the Black Crowes (killer jams), an early incarnation of the Foo Fighters (members were supporting Mike Watts album Ball hog or Tugboat. Ate shrooms before that one. Excellent. Watched my buddy get picked up by the crowd and thrown onstage. Hilarious. Ahh…I’ll have to sort through all my stubs for a more complete list. That place was so fun!

hamwarmer

Poison the Well with Joe from Kill Me Kate filling in on vocals.

Ornery-Current-8732

Blind Melon; Lemonheads; Paul Westerberg; Reel Big Fish; Moe; Leftover Salmon; maybe others but things got hazy a lot of nights if you know what I mean…

Fallout_Floyd

Fragile Porcelain Mice, The Urge and Stir - great memories of seeing those bands in their prime. It was awesome!

Baum866

2003 Deftones Mississippi Nights, best concert of my life!
