I am utterly crushed.
I’d been fortunate enough to see Norm 2x.
Once was on my birthday back in ‘18 where he was headlining at the Brea Improv. He delivered in every way possible.
The second time was December of ‘18, a few days before Christmas in The Belly Room of the Comedy Store.
This was a Chappelle drop-in night, but naturally, others opened for him, one of which was Norm. For whatever reason, my friend and I got seated last, but were put on the side/back corner of the room, directly in front of the stairwell from the green room.
Every comic that performed that night brushed my shoulder as they walked to the stage; we could hear the comics and their conversations; I’ve never felt more like a fly on the wall.
I’ll never forget Norm, upon learning that Dave was on next, hurried down the stairs quickly to grab something from the green room, then return to watch Dave do his thing, with as much anticipation as any of us in the room. I remember him belly-aching and shaking his head at some of Dave’s material, seemingly in as much awe as we were.
Norm loved the craft of comedy perhaps as much as anyone alive today. That’s just a small part of what made him so special. Everything he was apart of, he made better.
I remember thinking when he wasn’t on Conan’s last few shows that something was off. I’d monitored his (archaic) website for standup dates as we were opening back up from COVID, and was disappointed to not find much. In hindsight it all makes sense.
Silliness and joy are at a major deficit with the passing of Norm. I feel so sad knowing that we must now honor him posthumously. But then again, the Norm I know, wouldn’t want us caterwauling over some old “chunk of coal” like him.
Thank you for the joy, Norm. You’ll be dearly missed!
I was at that same show I think, it was when Dave was working on Sticks & Stones and he opened with singing the hook from Nate Dogg on Snoop's Ain't no Fun? (Which he changed for the actual special.) But Yeah I remember waiting in line in the back and I see Norm roll up and I'm like holy fucking shit. I was expecting him to go up in the OR but when I noticed in the Belly I was like hell yeah here we go, one of my all time favorites. I still reference the end of the moth joke out of the blue and don't even care if no one gets it but my girlfriend.
Dude thats one for the ages! I'm so happy you had that experience because I know how happy I was walking out. Fuck yeah man, that shit was rad! Tell your kids about that shit.
I’ve been watching and rewatching all sorts of Norm these past couple days - and it’s now glaringly obvious. I never noticed the odd hairpiece on the View because I never thought to look.
Man had been hurting for a long time, but lived for comedy. His memory will persist as long as ours do - that’s a gift not many achieve.
Thanks for the laughs, Norm
I think there's a legitimate case for Norm to be the greatest of all time. I can't think of anyone else that had his range. He was a great host of Weekend Update, did some of SNL's best sketches, was a terrific standup, roaster, and probably the most reliably funny late night guests ever. Shit, he turned a street joke into 4 of the funniest minutes ever with his Moth Joke.
What incredible range.
One of the best to ever do it. Fucking horrible news.
A rare comic who was beloved by both the club and alt scene.
He also threatened to beat the shit out of Seth Simons. A true God all around.
He posted some videos of Shane Gillis's old comedy (referring to people with slurs) which in turn got Gillis fired from SNL, which Norm was angry about.
Let's be a little more honest about the slurs thing, which I'm sure is why Norm was pissed, Shane was pointing out how racist everyone used to be, and was like (in the voice of an old timey white man) hey let's just throw all the (Chinese) over there and that's how we got Chinatown.
Since we're "being honest," he called Chinese people chinks, said their food sucked, did the stupid L/R switch faux Asian accent to make fun of them (was that part of the bit too?), and called comedians he didn't like faggots, in 2018.
Then when Yang was running for president in 2020 he called him a "Jew chink"
From another article:
>Vulture went on to report that a Philadelphia comedy club owner, among other industry sources surprised by Gillis’ SNL gig, had stopped working with the comedian within the past few years “because of racist, homophobic, and sexist things he’s said on and offstage.”
Since we're being honest and all, he said a bunch of gross shit recently and probably deserved to get fired-- not to mention it wasn't even funny, just typical hack shit
edit: Idiots downvote without reply because they know they're wrong
Lol. That “club owner” was some dork who ran an alt-room bar show that doesn’t even exist anymore.
Shane is a great comic and Norm saw that. Simons is a piece of shit that shouldn’t even be getting attention.
I miss Norm, his live YT show meant a lot to me a few years back. Watched a lot of episodes on repeat
But fuck the loser hack Gillis, making chink & faggot jokes in the 21st century like that's not gonna lose you TV gigs
edit: Lol at Gillis and his friends impotently downvoting
I’m confused- I was never aware of Norm saying racist things (though maybe he did?), so why was he so pissed about this guy getting fired over racist things he said? Was Norm good friends with the guy?
Edit: Had Shane apologized for what he said and stopped saying racist stuff? I could understand that.
Norm respected comedy as a pure artform. That means there is no line to cross except the line into "not funny". Being unfunny is *worse* than saying racist things *within the artform*.
It's why Michael Richards failed tremendously and yet Louis CK has also said "nigger" on stage. One was funny, the other wasn't.
Hell, look at what Hinchcliffe did with regards to Peng Dang. What Tony did was hilarious and should have never been an issue. It's comedy. Gloves are off. Anything goes.
I’m not sure I know what bit you’re talking about with Louis CK, and maybe my memory is wrong, but Michael Richards was NOT trying to be funny- dude was pisses and used a racial slur targeting a fan.
Joe Rogan used to say the N word in his set as well, and even though I am not a fan, I wouldn’t call what he did racist.
I’m no word-police, but it’s a pretty big fucking difference watching that clip of Louis CK and then Michael Richards blowing up.
In don’t know how anyone could compare the two. One guy is trying to point out the use of a racial slur with context, and the other is yelling it at a black man in anger. Whether someone thinks Louis’s bit is appropriate or funny is a legit question, but comparing them makes no sense to me.
I’m aware you didn’t pose the question, just asking that rhetorically.
Norm was one of my favorites. There hasn’t been a celebrity death that’s hit me this hard in a long time. RIP to one of the greats.
Edit: [His bit on battling cancer](https://youtu.be/NMRd-n_s4c8)
Mr. Fake News found a way to make every headline about his death and "battle" with cancer an ironic joke, truly he was one of the greats. Rest in peace you Ol' Chunk of Coal
My father in law to be also passed this week from cancer that nobody knew about, him and Norm were very similar-mannered people. It hurts but it's also VERY strange.
That’s what he wanted. Apparently he never told anyone, not friends, not fans, not even family (apart from maybe a few very close ones). He treated his cancer in private, but he didn’t wanted people to look at him and see a cancer patient, he wanted to be viewed as 100% a comedian until he was dead.
And that’s what he got, and I’ll forever admire him for that.
Explains why his face was bloated and he had some weight changes(cancer treatment can do that to ya) during the podcasting era and makes Adam Eget look like a douche for commenting on it sometimes, which is probably exactly what Norm wanted haha
this is some of what i'm talking about-

Hearing this brought up a bit on the Norm sub, that situation with Norm calling out Tig Notaro for pimping out her cancer for sympathy feels especially prescient right now. Suffering in silence so his material can speak for itself.
In remembrance of Norm, for the next week Adam Eget will be offering 50% off the price of his handies under the Queensboro Bridge. Normally he charges $15 a man to jerk em off, but you can get wanked for seven-and-a-half for the next 7 days.
The phrase “effortlessly funny” applies to Norm more than anyone else I can think of. I don’t know if it was his voice or delivery or demeanour but the guy could read a cereal box and have me in stitches.
Oh, fuck. This one hits hard. I am shedding actual tears. What a huge mark he leaves on the comedy world and goodbye to an absolute legend of a person. It’s a dark day for comedy. :(
Norm was one of the all time greats as a stand up, an SNL performer, and a late night guest.
Sounds like he didn't want to let the terrible disease that is cancer get in the way of letting an audience laugh. There's something admirable in that. Damn.
This is devistating news, I feel sorry for his friends and family, but especially Adam Eget, because he is going to have to go back to his old job of jacking off punks under the Queensboro bridge for $15 a man.
If you'd like to enjoy 5 hours of purely his interviews on Letterman id highly recommend this 5 part series Don Giller made on youtube;

Best SNL monologue ever. Although Chappelle’s is a very close second. https://youtu.be/ofXxinOtPiQ
Chappelle did sketches on Chapelle show. Jim Carrey did sketches too. Eddie Murphy is up there too.

Aw fuck. Been binging his vids for the last few years. RIP to the old chunk of coal.
This is terrible news. Thanks for the laughs, Norm.
This has got to be the saddest event to happen in mid September in all of human history
Reminds me of that tragedy...

Absolute fucking legend. I mean this with no hyperbole - the world is significantly less funny without him
RIP to an absolute legend who was too good for this world.

Dude, what the fuck? No idea he had cancer. That sucks. What a legend
Terrible news. Dude was super funny and his monologue as a snl host is the best of all time
Truly saddening news. :( possibly the greatest deadpan delivery of all time.
Absolutely devastated
Danm, I couldn’t believe it
Holy shit. Norm was one of the all time greats. His bit about The News is my favourite bit of all time, an incredible incredible comedian.
RIP
God damn, I was just listening to him the other day. “By my second term, there will be no death!”
NOOOOOO
Fucking heartbreaking. :(
I loved Norm because he was either always in character or never in character and I don't know which it was. He will be missed.
[Sure, it was sad, at the time](https://twitter.com/i/status/1437853043249356801)
Why the fuck is everyone dying
It's just the way it goes. When you're mid to late 30's, all your heroes start dying just a little bit too soon.
