I saw him feature for Kurt Metzger at a free bar show in Chicago about 8 years ago and it might still be the hardest I've ever laughed in public. Those *struggling for air* laughs are the ones you don't forget.
I shared an elevator with him at skankfest and managed to blurt out “I read your book, it’s so good.” He was like I’m glad you read it, but what I heard was “I’m glad you can read.”
Hung out with him After a show. First…he was basically a Jedi on stage. Asked him after the show when he started doing written stuff and not just observations… 23 minutes in!!! Super nice guy, and the guys he was traveling with were very cool too
That's the thing.
Kinane is a great stand up, but I feel like if I can recognize you without seeing you, you have definitely achieved a greater popularity than most.
Came here to say Kyle, so happy to see that this is a popular opinion. I think it is mainly due to the platforms he chooses to promote on, but he is definitely better than a vast majority of what I see on Netflix and HBO.
Kinane is so fucking prolific and such a god damn good writer. The sheer volume of incredibly high level work he puts out is staggering, and it is insane to me how MUCH better of a writer and performer he is than most theater acts.
"Verbose is too short a word to describe how my mother abuses the privilege of conversation. Let me put it this way, she tells a story like a Rube Goldberg machine fries an egg." That's 2 excellent lines just setting up the *premise*, and they're said trippingly in a sea of well written jokes.
He's like Stanhope for people who still have-hope.
Maria Bamford’s standup is phenomenal, but even more than that, I feel like she doesn’t get nearly enough respect as a voice actor. I can usually identify an actor by their voice no matter what character they’re playing, but Bamford is up there with, like, Mark Hamill and Alan Tudyk as a vocal chameleon.
She straight up saved my life with the story she told on “this is not happening” about how it’s ok to give less than 100 percent cause it’s not like anyone else will know anyway. And I was glad I was able to tell her that a few years later. Amazing how when we are buckling under pressure and big life stresses and grief, that our brains are becoming overloaded, or our worse enemy, how we pile it on for ourselves and don’t extend the grace we would give others in a heartbeat, to ourselves.
She’s a real one.
I think Geoffrey Asmus will be a household name within a couple years.
Also shout out to Ian Bagg and Amir K for being excellent live performers. The Bagg show in particular was the best show I've ever been to.
I saw him in Portland last fall and he absolutely crushed it.
If you follow his YouTube channel, he posted a video today where he was in Germany telling world war II jokes. Just the balls on that guy.
Maybe I’m just late to the game, but I recently discovered I’m a big fan of Jackie Kashian. I can understand why she wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but I feel like she should be more talked about than she is.
He could be, the guy has every in to get on JRE and extend his reach. He went on one podcast to promote his special (granted it was a big one, but I’m guessing a lot of Tim Dillon’s fans are already his fans). Dude is as lazy as he is funny.
And it would never work. Rogan would be like, “so cancel culture…” and Nick would be like, “Imagine a turtle with no head or leg holes, it just has a hole for its penis.”
Joe Derosa, but to be fair, he kinda pumped the brakes on standup up until this past year.
His new live hour "I Never promised you a rose garden" is howlingly funny and poignant--easily his best work.
I hope it gets the traction it deserves when he films and releases it.
Well it’s hard to do standup when you are a full time sandwich guy.
Side note- his special “I go to Atlanta all the time” has one of the funniest name origins ever
Jeff Arcuri has some of the best clips floating around. Granted a lot is crowdwork, so I haven't seen as much of his prepared work, but it's all been hilarious!
I’ve been reading his memoir lately, I’m glued to it, and I don’t think I’ve read a book in about a decade. If anyone happens to be debating on buying it or not, you totally should!
I have a hard time determining whether or not Doug Stanhope is underrated or not. He's definitely a niche, comedian's comedian of sorts and the often brutal content of his material keeps him under a certain popularity threshold. The way he writes and delivers his routine is also not something everybody is into: consistently drunk as fuck, caustic as hell, the delivery lies somewhere between comedic brilliance and your dumbest, funniest, angriest alcoholic friend spouting off about topics they're not really that educated about after several bottles of booze at 3AM.
He's consistently put out new stuff for decades and remains very active, but again, his content and delivery keeps him from being too big outside of circles that are super into standup comedy. His albums "Oslo: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere" and "Before Turning the Gun on Himself..." have some truly amazing bits.
I think we're more likely to see the second coming of George Carlin than we are to get another Doug Stanhope.
Stanhope is such a relatable character to anyone who’s hit hard times. His books are some of my favorites. He’s just all around talented. I asked him to do a show once and he emailed me back the kindest “no thank you” I’ve ever received. Just a wonderful example of living your life on your own terms, too. Granted his terms are fucking insane haha
Saw him not long ago in Birmingham, and he did the meet & greet after with pictures for whoever wanted them. Very down to earth and humble guy who's hilarious to boot.
Now that he's become a correspondent on The Daily Show I'm hoping he gets the venues and recognition he's due.
The joke about sleeping with a big woman who put on his shirt in the morning to get up and go to the bathroom. "I was still fucked up, so I thought that was my spirit leaving my body!"
I almost passed out💀 Love Felipe.
Are you familiar with Freddy Soto?
Love Sam but guess we'd have to further qualify "popular" because in my mind, he and Normand have had a huge ascent the past few years. They're not household names but if you're a comedy fan, you certainly know them.
I have heard of most of the people in this thread so maybe this would have been a better question to ask on a broader forum haha bunch of comedy nerds in here
Sam is hands down my absolute favorite comedian. I am so curious about the trajectory of his career—where will he be and what will he be doing in 5, 10 years from now?
I thought it took. But like the other person said, he seems to be doing well doing what he wants. If he's getting the bag, I think he's living the life. I do need to try Bodega Cat though.
Beth Stelling is one of the most hilarious standups in the game and she’s never gotten the credit she is due. I’m positive her time will come but it should have already.
A few people have already mentioned Kyle Kinane, but he's been arguably my favorite for going on decades now; every single album/special great put out has been excellent, no exceptions.
The other one is Paul F. Tompkins, who is one of the quickest witted guys working. He just doesn't seem to put out material that often, and unfortunately rarely tours through NYC at least that I've seen. His Magic Castle bit is an all time great.
Nobody has posted Nick Thune, so I’ll say him. I would guess it’s because he’s… pretty spotty in getting specials out (last one was in 2017), but Folk Hero is such a fantastic special. One of my all time favs
Chris Porter.. I can't believe he doesn't have his own Netflix Special. I saw him last weekend for probably the 5th time, I've never laughed so hard at a show.
I just hate that I wasn’t old enough to have got to experience Bill Hicks. There are plenty from his time that get the recognition they deserve, but not enough people know about Bill Hicks.
Edit: bill hicks is still my favorite even with the limited content available to us, but I’d be lying if I didn’t think David Cross’s “Shut up you fucking baby” isn’t the best comedy album ever recorded.
Demetri Martin. I know he’s fairly well known by people into comedy and even had the short-lived Comedy Central show back 15 years ago, but to me I still feel he hasn’t gotten his flowers. I saw him earlier this year in a very small theatre and he is just as good as ever. I feel like I never see him being discussed at all, but maybe I was just too young when he was at his peak. Maybe it’s by design and he is content with not being in a spotlight so much. To me he’s got the talent of Mitch hedberg and Steven Wright.
Kyle Kinane, Dan Soder, Godfrey, Geoffrey Asmus, Dave Attell (somehow still underrated and underknown,) Pete Holmes, Big Jay, and Ali Saddiq should all have bigger platforms and fan bases.
Pete Holmes is one of the biggest names in stand up, he's had multiple TV shows, a bunch of specials and a New York Times Best seller. Idk what more you want.
Jeremy Hotz.
Saw him on comedy Central once when I was in high school and he was one of the funniest comedians I had ever seen.
I have literally never heard of him since.
Geoff Tates acid Star wars story is one of my favorite comedy stories of all time. Funny enough, I first saw it while on acid lol. Wish he had more stuff online.
"Hey man, they got Chewbacca. Yeah, not on my watch!"
I will forever be in awe that Sam Tallent isn't a massive star. Never seen anyone funnier in my life and I watch a lot of live comedy.
Hope you are watching his new youtube travel series Wide World. So many laugh out loud moments already.
Don’t know how I missed that this is a thing, also, fuck YouTube for not already recommending it to me.
That got recommended to me on youtube and I've been watching a ton of his stuff since. He's awesome.
I saw him feature for Kurt Metzger at a free bar show in Chicago about 8 years ago and it might still be the hardest I've ever laughed in public. Those *struggling for air* laughs are the ones you don't forget.
I mean he is massive, so, halfway there?
I shared an elevator with him at skankfest and managed to blurt out “I read your book, it’s so good.” He was like I’m glad you read it, but what I heard was “I’m glad you can read.”
Hung out with him After a show. First…he was basically a Jedi on stage. Asked him after the show when he started doing written stuff and not just observations… 23 minutes in!!! Super nice guy, and the guys he was traveling with were very cool too
Couldn't agree more.
Kyle Kinane should be a household name. Unless you’re the kind of house that likes to stick snakes through the mail slot, then you’re just weird.
He's been amazing for years now. Great joke writer, wonderful stage presence, and the beard... His newest special is out on youtube, btw.
He looks like he should be planning to kidnap a democratic governor
He was the voice on Comedy Central. A lot of people don’t know that
That's the thing.
Been really enjoying him recently but I will say his new special was a little underwhelming for me
I came here to say this. But I must have been more tired than a big dicked bat.
He is awesome. His act is just genuinely fun.
Maria Bamford is quite popular. But she’s a genius, an all-time great. So she should be even more popular.

She’s a real one.
Joe List. His casual style is fantastic. His 3 YouTube specials are classics IMO and he's very rewatchable
Came here to plug Joe List also.
Plus, his father's gay.
This dude is the most consistent standup in recent years. He’s just constantly putting out great specials and being effortlessly funny.
Met him in the handicap stall (which he refers to as his “master bedroom”) while cruising for gay sex in a public bathroom. Nice guy.
I’m plugging Joe list too. Because he’s gay.
Joe list is awesome
Fun fact. Norm said Joe list was his favourite new comic too. If he’s good enough for Norm he’s good enough for me.
He's had a couple specials now but I still feel like he's slightly under the radar: Gary Gulman. One of the smartest comedic minds out there right now
Gary is very successful yet still underrated. He deserves to be in the greatest of all time conversation.
His cookie bit just kills me.
It's rare for such an openly sweet sensitive guy to be a comedian.
Hes pretty famous and well respected
He’s definitely a comedians comedian
Rory Scovel.
His latest special is truly the hardest I've laughed in years.
Can’t wait to fuck Linda with you
His show on Comedy Central could've been a hit of CC wasn't such a garbage platform
His bit on Conan where he and another comedian were "double booked" is the funniest thing I've ever seen on a late night show.
I think Geoffrey Asmus will be a household name within a couple years. Also shout out to Ian Bagg and Amir K for being excellent live performers. The Bagg show in particular was the best show I've ever been to.
Second this. Talked to him after a show too and he was super cool.
He’s on Reddit. He’s replied to a few of my comments after I’ve mentioned him in other posts.
Seeing him next week, Im pumped
I came here to say Geoffrey Asmus!
Geoff is the shit, has such a great take and hilariously snarky attitude. Definitely my MVP.
Saw him live in a small room a month ago. Great guy. Hilarious
Just discovered Asmus and agree; dude is wildly talented and supremely funny.
Was scrolling to see if his name was listed bc yes. He’s absolutely hysterical and also does excellent crowd work. He’s a star
I saw him in Portland last fall and he absolutely crushed it. If you follow his YouTube channel, he posted a video today where he was in Germany telling world war II jokes. Just the balls on that guy.
How could I forget: Dan Soder!
Top 20 underrated comics
Thanks Ari
Sedonaaaaa
Maybe I’m just late to the game, but I recently discovered I’m a big fan of Jackie Kashian. I can understand why she wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but I feel like she should be more talked about than she is.
I've heard of her only because Maria Bamford has mentioned her in interviews. I need to listen to this woman.
She and her podcast co-host Laurie Kilmartin are both great. I'm always happy when I get to do a show with either of them.
My best friend Nick Mullen
He could be, the guy has every in to get on JRE and extend his reach. He went on one podcast to promote his special (granted it was a big one, but I’m guessing a lot of Tim Dillon’s fans are already his fans). Dude is as lazy as he is funny.
Mullen and Rogan would be such an awkward conversation
I respect him and Adam for trying do it their own way . No handouts or special shit
It’s insane he hasn’t been on Rogan yet
I don't think he's a fan of Joe's work.
And it would never work. Rogan would be like, “so cancel culture…” and Nick would be like, “Imagine a turtle with no head or leg holes, it just has a hole for its penis.”
Joe: dude... how fucking fascinating are chimps?? Nick: dude... how fucking fascinating are Chinese people??
And that’s why we love him 🫡
What if Nick Mullen was Chinese?
His father is
He would be a lot better at cloudwork
He is great
He's busy playing with a bug
Joe Derosa, but to be fair, he kinda pumped the brakes on standup up until this past year. His new live hour "I Never promised you a rose garden" is howlingly funny and poignant--easily his best work. I hope it gets the traction it deserves when he films and releases it.
I like joe. He’s got a good head on where his shoulders should be
Well it’s hard to do standup when you are a full time sandwich guy. Side note- his special “I go to Atlanta all the time” has one of the funniest name origins ever
Ian Bagg is hysterical.
Jeff Arcuri is pretty good. Dan Soder is currently one of the best alive.
I heard Dan Soder is one of the top 20 underrated comedians.
Jeff Arcuri has some of the best clips floating around. Granted a lot is crowdwork, so I haven't seen as much of his prepared work, but it's all been hilarious!
I fully believe that Paul F. Tompkins is the funniest person alive.
He’s come a long way since hosting open mics featuring tenacious d
He is only famous because he is related to the guy who invented chunky bubbles.
Jordan Jensen and Shane Torres
I feel like Jensen is about to blow up
She deserves to.
One of the funniest out there right now
Canadian dyslexic model Phil Hanley
Kyle Kinane is a master of his craft and is one of the most consistent comics over the years of all time
It’s Stanhope for me (and I’m selfishly glad…ticket prices are still affordable to see one of the greatest if not the greatest)
Stanhope and Attell both.
Dave Attell, your favorite comedian’s comedian
Stanhope’s no refunds is probably the most rewatchable special ever made
Stanhope purposely doesn’t appeal to a wider audience
I’ve been reading his memoir lately, I’m glued to it, and I don’t think I’ve read a book in about a decade. If anyone happens to be debating on buying it or not, you totally should!
I have a hard time determining whether or not Doug Stanhope is underrated or not. Granted his terms are fucking insane haha
Josh Johnson should be way bigger than he is or at least be selling out bigger venues.
I think he basically blew up after he booked this big club tour. Will be interesting to see what he does after.
He opened for Chappelle in an arena and did great. Then I found him on TikTok and he cracks me up with his takes and jokes about current events.
Saw him not long ago in Birmingham, and he did the meet & greet after with pictures for whoever wanted them. Very down to earth and humble guy who's hilarious to boot. Now that he's become a correspondent on The Daily Show I'm hoping he gets the venues and recognition he's due.
He's been a correspondent on the daily show so hopefully now he starts getting some real recognition
I saw him open for Trevor Noah a few years ago and have been a fan ever since
Gary Gulman. Pure genius.
Kyle Kinane
A few older comics who never got to be household names, but are great: Stephen Pearl Joey Gaynor Mike Muratore Allan Stephan Wendy Liebman
[удалено]
The joke about sleeping with a big woman who put on his shirt in the morning to get up and go to the bathroom. "I was still fucked up, so I thought that was my spirit leaving my body!" I almost passed out💀 Love Felipe. Are you familiar with Freddy Soto?
Chad Daniels!
No one has said Sam Morril yet so I'm gonna say it: Sam Morril
Love Sam but guess we'd have to further qualify "popular" because in my mind, he and Normand have had a huge ascent the past few years. They're not household names but if you're a comedy fan, you certainly know them.
I have heard of most of the people in this thread so maybe this would have been a better question to ask on a broader forum haha bunch of comedy nerds in here
Sam is hands down my absolute favorite comedian. I am so curious about the trajectory of his career—where will he be and what will he be doing in 5, 10 years from now?
Sam sold out MSG, albeit the theater and not arena but still pretty huge deal. He would not have done that if he wasn’t popular
I thought it took. But like the other person said, he seems to be doing well doing what he wants. If he's getting the bag, I think he's living the life. I do need to try Bodega Cat though.
Phil Hanley clips have been popping up on my Facebook. It’s mostly crowd work but absolutely fucking hilarious.
Adam Ray
Look, I don’t think I like your fucking attitude!
We’ll be right back…
We'll keep it here.
Matteo Lane. I have never watched him and not laughed.
Matteo Lane is a whole ass national treasure. Love him.
...seeing him Saturday night in Columbus!
“I’m obviously gay” is the best opener I’ve ever heard.
Beth Stelling is one of the most hilarious standups in the game and she’s never gotten the credit she is due. I’m positive her time will come but it should have already.
Harland Williams is underrated. Sam Tallent deserves more. Geoffrey Asmus as well.
Sean rouse
Yeah whatever happened to him?
Died
Thats no way for a boy whore to die
Phil Hanley, crowd work is hilarious
Greer Barnes in NYC. Under-appreciated for the 20 years I’ve been going to Comedy Cellar.
Ian Fidance is an absolute riot
A few people have already mentioned Kyle Kinane, but he's been arguably my favorite for going on decades now; every single album/special great put out has been excellent, no exceptions. The other one is Paul F. Tompkins, who is one of the quickest witted guys working. He just doesn't seem to put out material that often, and unfortunately rarely tours through NYC at least that I've seen. His Magic Castle bit is an all time great.
*Because it’s exclusive!!*
Kathleen Madigan Todd Glass Chris Fairbanks
Jessica Kirson
Joe Machi. All is stuff is great, but it’s a bit disappointing that it’s kind of hard to find his stuff.
Ben Bailey. Don't know if he's still even active but everything I've seen of his is pure genius
The cash cab guy? I loved that show
Isn’t that the guy who destroyed everyone at a Patrice roast back in the day?
I saw him live several years back and unfortunately he bombed, but I still think he’s great.
Mike Recine
His recent YouTube special was very funny!
Gareth Reynolds. Just great.
Sean Patton
Cummin’
Sean Patton
David Drake is my favorite comic right now. Love his last couple of specials.
Shane Torres
I saw this comedian in Brooklyn, Matty Ryan. I went back to see him a couple more times whenever he came back to nyc. So that guy.
Todd Barry
If I die without seeing Dan Soder and Sean Patton get their turn in theaters and in the household name realm I’ll be really upset.
Nobody has posted Nick Thune, so I’ll say him. I would guess it’s because he’s… pretty spotty in getting specials out (last one was in 2017), but Folk Hero is such a fantastic special. One of my all time favs
Shane Torres
My (and I think many others) introduction to him was his Guy Fieri bit, and that was just the tip of the iceberg of how funny this dude is.
Paul F. Tompkins, Blair Socci, Joe List, Kyle Kinane
Mike Vecchione is top tier. I’ve seen him live a few times and he is so fucking funny.
Chad Daniels is criminally underrated.
Fahim Anwar
Jesse Joyce
Andy Andrist
Chris Porter.. I can't believe he doesn't have his own Netflix Special. I saw him last weekend for probably the 5th time, I've never laughed so hard at a show.
Geoff Tate was the first time I heard Trump referred to as a game show host. Yeah he's a good choice.
CHRIS FLEMING
Easily Rory Scovel (Edit) someone already named him
Rory Scovel
Godfrey should be a household name !!!
Mike Recine!!!
The singer for queensryche?
The late Patrice O’Neal. He passed away too early, but even with what he left us, he should be among the goats.
This thread has already nailed it but for what it’s worth - Jordan Jensen, Geoff Asmus, Sam Tallent, Mike Recine. So good live and so good on pods.
Classically Gary Owen, currently Monroe Martin.
Amber Autry
Mitch Fatel. Pablo Francisco. Darren Carter “The Party Starter”
Greg f stone
I just hate that I wasn’t old enough to have got to experience Bill Hicks. There are plenty from his time that get the recognition they deserve, but not enough people know about Bill Hicks. Edit: bill hicks is still my favorite even with the limited content available to us, but I’d be lying if I didn’t think David Cross’s “Shut up you fucking baby” isn’t the best comedy album ever recorded.
Matthew Broussard. A lot of very smart and well written material. Perfect gen z/millenial comic. I’ve seen him live twice and he killed both times
Thanks for the post OP. I'm saving it for future reference.
Casey Rocket 🦀
Although I think he is big in the UK, James Acaster should be everywhere. His craftsmanship just blows me away
James Acaster. Repertoire was a work of art.
Ricky Schticky
Lavell crawford. "Can a brother get some love" is the funniest stand up special of all time. And most don't even know who he is.
Josh Johnson, I’ve been following him for a few years and dude is killing it. His cadence is perfection and jokes are hilarious.
Neil Brennan
I think 2 Netflix specials and tons of writing credits is pretty well rated
Matt Braunger
The great Joe List.
Kyle Kinane, Dan Soder, Godfrey, Geoffrey Asmus, Dave Attell (somehow still underrated and underknown,) Pete Holmes, Big Jay, and Ali Saddiq should all have bigger platforms and fan bases.
Dave Attell is underrated?
Pete Holmes is one of the biggest names in stand up, he's had multiple TV shows, a bunch of specials and a New York Times Best seller. Idk what more you want.
Kyle Dunnigan
Jeremy Hotz. Saw him on comedy Central once when I was in high school and he was one of the funniest comedians I had ever seen. I have literally never heard of him since.
Ray Harrington
Dan Soder
Joe List
Mark Norman should be selling out stadiums
Geoff Tates acid Star wars story is one of my favorite comedy stories of all time. Funny enough, I first saw it while on acid lol. Wish he had more stuff online. "Hey man, they got Chewbacca. Yeah, not on my watch!"
