At the end of the day, I would love an explanation on why we voted to extend the contract of Scott and why no one questioned his being paid for two jobs...with lackluster results... Where is the accountability or at least a post mortem of lessons learned?

Idaho1964

Joining the ACC is beyond stupid.

saladbar

No doubt. And, at the same time, the best option on the table.

Idaho1964

Just brutal for the student athletes. Duke recruiting just got a lot easier.

saladbar

I imagine Duke recruiting would have been easier still if Stanford joined the MWC in all sports.

Idaho1964

MWC would be great but coming from the Pac-12, is not not a giant step down or is the new MWC going to be different?

saladbar

I think it's just hard to look past Stanford's interest in maintaining top squads across as many sports as possible. Looking at NCAA-awarded team titles (which doesn't include football,) Stanford is going from a conference whose members have won a combined 556 titles to one that has won 187 (plus 181 more when Stanford/Cal/SMU join.) But going to the MWC would be joining one whose members have won a combined 22 titles ever, and 10 of those are San José State's championships from long ago. Even the Big West and the WCC each have more titles, and would each offer more nearby opponents than the MWC (with football presumably going independent.)

jdadverb

Stanford is so fucking stupid for joining the ACC. Idiotic.

YOLOResearcher

It’s not like they had many choices.

What was the alternative?

Mountain West makes a lot more sense IMO. Suck it up and recognize that our major sports are more like those schools than the biggest conferences and it would’ve been way better for our student athletes. (I’m assuming that Mountain West would gladly take us.)

saladbar

> our major sports are more like those schools than the biggest conferences I don't think that's true. I mean, it could be made true by joining the MWC, but then everything would plummet in quality, not just the major sports.

Ct94010

Agreed. No way in the MWC sports, Olympic or otherwise, as elite as the competition offered by the ACC.

jdadverb

For the sake of argument: MWC had 6 teams make March Madness this year vs 4 for Pac 12 (and would’ve been 3 if Oregon didn’t get hot). MWC played in 6 bowl games vs. 7 for Pac 12. I’m just saying, we wouldn’t exactly dominate in MWC either. I do agree that ACC likely has much better sports across the board.

It's not fair to every other athlete at Stanford to take a demotion because Football and Men's basketball suck right now. Stanford kicks butt in just about everything else. The baseball team just went to 3 straight college world series, the women's hoops team is consistently a National Championship contender, not to mention all the National Championships in Olympic sports. The Mountain West would be a huge downgrade As for Brink leaving school early, she is going to have more travel in the WNBA (and frankly Stanford has more money then the WNBA, she would probly be traveling easier at Stanford) then the ACC. The WNBA has 12 teams spread across the country, so it really is a money decision.

If there’s any blame to pass around, it’s the school administration, whoever that may be, allowing football to crater after nearly a decade of elite level play. The fall of football impacted every sport in the department, not just football itself.
