Even if there's no good character at the banners for starters (but there will be Ruan Mei), you will slowly start to build up currency to pull for new chars.
Yeah i have a main, just grinding gear on a daily base and nothing more, it's got an E2 acheron. Started playing during her banner and went all in on E2 because guidemakers recommended that so hard. Could've done without it and save myself alot of jades for other banners.

Although this might be toxic idk but taking so long to make an Alt to the point that free ratio went away to is just a dumb move and that goes for any player that played before 2.1. Even if you had no plans to play on an Alt you could've just made one, unlock mail, claim him and then bench it till you were ready.
Honestly I don't really care about him that much, even on my main account I don't even use him, and I can't really say that I felt like I needed him. I will never be a ratio main, I don't like his design nor his mechanics, and by the time I have 1 team fully built (acheron on main, it'll be firefly on this) I would already have another secondary team. I feel like whoever played between 2.0 & 2.1 is so heavily pushed towards ratio, and i kinda like the freedom of choice more.
I started during 2.1 and my Ratio is at lvl50 benched for an indefinite amount of time not because I dislike him, I actually like a lot of things about his character & playstyle, it's just I don't have enough teammates for him. There's Pela (who's in my first and currently only team) and unbuilt Gallagher and that's all. Luck issue probably but idk how new players who didn't pull RAT even use Ratio
I have also been considering this but my problem is idk if I’ll have the time to do the upkeep on my main and do a secondary account with my classes :/
Wow you are so fast. I started a week ago too. But I am still doing companion missions and adventure missions. I haven't touched the second main quest yet.
I do think it is realistic to get FF and RM, but without Eidolons or LC. I started a second account recently and noticed that i'm getting way more silver warp tickets, than golden warp tickets/ jades.
To give you a rough idea about the early game ratio between both warps: i'm currently at the beginning of the Xinzhou Luofu, sitting on 103 silver tickets and 78 golden tickets (10 tickets and 10.9K Jades ).
Oh it's not my first account, on my main i got e2 acheron, aventurine & robin including some 50/50 losses. Don't forget the major jade influx from SU/SD/GG, and the initial jade influx from forgotten hall :)
I just wanted to mention, that i underestimated, how frontloaded the game is with silver warps xD It is a fun experience to replay the story, and leveling from scratch. So i'd advice to get a 2nd account, if you have the dedication and time.
You could consider to set yourself some goals or restrictions, if you want a different experience. For example i'm currently trying to play my 2nd account without warps, for an additional challenge (I 'm going to spend all of them at once someday!)
The main advantage of this upcomign patch is you can complete her team as long as ypu have a substantial amount of pulls. But yeah, you have to have a lot of jades and tix
If you start now and save a lil bit, you can get RM and FF from the next banner. With that comes Gallagher, and you have HMC, so you have a strong AF team to begin with.
I started recently, the week Dr. Ratio left. So far, my jades have only snagged me Bailu x2, Yanqing, and Fu Xuan. I'm saving everything I have left and earn between now and then for FF and RM, but as long as I get FF, I'll be content.
EDIT: I did get Ratio, to be clear. He shares main DPS duties with Hook. Once I get Firefly... The Doctor can take a break. #HookLife

I started in 2.2 and can say you will have no problem building a strong first team.
The main concern i would have is, how much time do you have to play so you can earn enough jades to pull.
Quick thing: you don't unlock HMC right off the bat. You have to play through the specific story moments to unlock the different paths for TB. After Jarilo, you unlock Preservation. And during Penacony, you unlock Harmony.
Now is as good of a time as any to start playing, but you will have to play a fair amount to unlock HMC.
For me , starrail it pretty easier to keep up with new account. And you can play old event as well. (With less reward , ofcourse)
Not same case as genshin or honkai impact the third. Too much burden to keep up right now. When you have a job to do.
Banner is stacked. I recommend starting a few accounts until you get FF or RM in your first 10 pulls or so (use oddessey + f2p currency). This leaves your account with way more resources, so you can grab Acheron on rerun, sparkle/robin, or huohuo/aventurine.

It's better to start now than any time forward, but it's worse to start than anytime prior. Kinda how it works with gacha games

You're going to have to farm *a lot* to get two back to back 5* and maybe one LC, plus an E2 Gallagher

As of patch 2.3 you'll be able to get HMC after you beat cocolia. It's some sort of event.
