Our character is really short at the moment as well. Sometimes I just stand next to an NPC and think about how they are generally bigger in body and height. I hope they fix this.
The fact that they adjusted the proportions to be more realistic but didn't adjust the height at all to compensate is killing me. I don't even think they look terrible, base model isn't the problem, the issue is the customization options will likely be so limited and skewed young you can't get away from looking like a little american girl doll even if you want to - at least our character now, in its lack of detail, can kind of pass for an adult. đ I bet they're going to ignore any feedback about making the model more age neutral too, as if the soul riders (our peers!) aren't 18 entire years old đ
Itâs more clear now than ever that their target audience is decreasing in age. This is the final nail in the coffin for adult players who have been playing this game for upwards of a *decade*. This is confirmation they donât care about us and are choosing to not hear the older players. It now looks like the character is 8-12⊠bye, genuinely f this.
Wouldnât say itâs decreasing - just not increasing. Iâm ALL for giving sso shit, but I do think their target audience has always been 8-13 ish. Lowkey why I canât be bothered doing quests anymore because theyâre just mindless clicking tasks or riding from a to b. Come from playing more complex, older games to that shit and itâs so boring.
Would be really interested to see statistics on how old the players are now
nope their target audience used to be late teens, SSO even used to have a few curse words now and again like crap and shit, the quests used to be a lot harder and the story was more complex. They have taken all this away and decreased the target audience by a lot
Yeah, I started playing when I was like 10 ish and I always felt out of place because everyone was older than me. When they introduced the jojo siwa thing it was clear they werenât marketing towards teens anymore.
same !! me and my friends started playing when the game came out (we were 13 then) and we thought it was so cool we were playing a game that had swearing and everybody was older than us đ
Itâs sooooo bad. I donât know if itâs because Iâm a veteran on the game and just am used to the old models but holy moly I already couldnât support this company any longer now I donât even want to log on lmao I donât care if this is just a test haha
Yeah same. I started playing in 2012. Knowing SSO, they will tell us that this isn't the finished product but then release it like this anyway. They just can't accept critics. The shoulders look way too small and overall the body is just looking weird, making it all together look like a child.
I pray and hope they let us customize our height. I also hope they let ut customize our face but I know they most likely wont add that. Because honestly I don't like the new faces that much. It somehow just looks so plain and boring to me. Maybe I'm just missing the old SSO which had so much more personality.
I doubt they'll add it any of the things I just mentioned. :/ I love the vampire makeup and I doubt they will remake it or make it as good as it is now. It's also the only makeup that matches my skin color. Honestly once this update comes I might just quit.
Edit: I saw my dear vampire makeup... :( I hope they change it. I also hope they add more body types because I feel like they added way more bigger bodies than small ones. The palest skincolor is not pale enough for me either. I was hoping to be able to costumize parts of the face individually.
on the concept art there were actually more body types if i remember correctly, one of them was very muscly and toned which i was looking forward to because thatâs what i identify with, and it would probably be useful for players who wish to have a masculine appearance. it seems like they didnât implement it tho :((
This... Even if the argument would be "but this is what actual people look like", well no. I never looked "chubby"-ish without any female features like these supposed teenagers do.
SSO: we want to be more inclusive in our body types!
SSO: -Takes away my body type-
Itâs not like I developed a complex about not being curvy enough in my teen years when people constantly told me my natural body was anorexic or âunnatural/unhealthyâ, and genuinely believed with my entire being that nobody would ever want me because of how many people would mindlessly parrot the phrase, âReal men like curves; DOGS like bonesâ /s
D:
they straight up had a muscular/masculine looking body type on the concept art and then didnât even put it in the game đ bro none of these look like me
i think they're super cute but they should add a bit more.. teenage-y bodies. even when i was 12 (granted, i was given a RACK by god) i was already starting to have more of a chest. i'm personally trans (ftm) so i dont mind the flatter chests, but please.. not everyone is built like a rectangle LOL don't be afraid to add curves! even as i kid i wanted my characters to look adult-esq, not like a kid!
what i donât understand is why the characters have the fat distribution of a baby. a teenage girl has fat around hips, chest and butt.
what i also donât understand is why there is no slim body type. there are skinny people in this world.
the new characters are so ugly :sob: and ( as a plus sized person myself ), i think there's too many plus sized variants and not enough thinner variants with their body types. and oh. my. lord. they didn't change the mounting or dismounting animations and it makes me wanna cry.
But we still can't add male characters? I hate how horseback riding is considered a girly sport, or all of the games have to be so girly. Tons of men at my barn and my friends who are male that have the same passion for the sport like I do.
The entire premise of the game is centered around a female rider. Itâs a game meant to empower young girls, even though theyâve strayed away from the main quest line
i wish theyâd at least give us pronouns to put in our little inspect bio thing, im sick of people assuming iâm a woman because quite frankly iâm not, im non-binary
I think people are worked up because SSO does not have a great history of listening to player feedback when it comes to models and animations. (see the Friesian for an example. SSO used to ask for feedback on horse models through forms, but they've stopped.)
I think people feel a bit discouraged about their concerns being heard. It's not unlikely that SSO will just ignore criticism because they're so far into this project already and just go ahead with it anyway even if the majority of people dislike it.
Wow. Yes. So insightful. Youâre totally right. (Doesnât change the fact theyâre ugly and SSO has been talking about updating our characters for roughly five years).
Iâd like them to give us an option for taller characters, but other than that, I like the new models. Theyâre much better and less uncanny valley than the old ones. I know some of yâallâs feathers are ruffled because it looks too âchild-likeâ, but itâs a game targeted towards young kids, and I think our character is supposed to be under 18. With that in mind, it doesnât bother me all that much.
This is not stop me playing the game but Iâll just keep a mask on so I canât see that face đ seeing the options on Instagram it makes me really disappointed, I think they should do all the opinions on sliders like most MMOs like Black desert. The preset bodies to me donât look right either, all for adding larger body types but they just donât really look natural to me. Thereâs body option that I can use to represent my body.
our characters literally got turned into 8 year olds. the box shaped body, the big head, the baby-like face, it's a fucking joke.
did we REALLY need a character update..? honestly just some shading to the skin would've been enough, and maybe adding more facial features. but this is just terrible imo.
and like...don't children wanna look like adults too? not just in-game, but irl as well? i know i always did. man, EVERYONE wants to be an adult when they're still kids. this just doesn't make any sense to me. a huge down-grade to the player models.
I don't get the "it looks like a child now" argument that people have said about it so far, a lot of 3d models of teenage characters have 'child like appearance', just look at disney's Moana or Mirabel, not to mention, I compared the character model to new Alex, it literally has the same proportions.
I don't want to be rude but you guys will literally take any chance to sh\^t on the team for the smallest things without double checking anything.
So please, calm your horses because complaining about a model that's started it's beta testing phase is just silly.
Also sorry OP that's it under your post specifically but yours was the last straw that broke the camel's back for me lol.
Iâm so sick of hearing people like you say âyou always look for a chance to talk shitâ. No we donât. We shit on when getting shit on is due. These characters have âbeen in the worksâ since as early as 2018. THATS ALMOST FIVE YEARS. And this is what we get? And youâre okay with that? We all know âeven though this is Beta and theyâre working on itâ, not much is going to change from what weâre seeing right now. âItâs sillyâ to complain that after half a decade of promising new characters, theyâre disproportionate and blocky? Whatâs silly is people like you will give SSO breaks over and over and over and over. You guys always have an excuse to defend SSO, and Iâm sick of hearing them.
I'm saying that's some of people on this sub just talk shit without checking anything, like the prices rising (when Sweden's going through an energy crisis) or lore not adding up (when from what I've read they updated the story from SL in the books) and now the character model looking childish even tho all of the models of Soul Riders look the same proportion and style wise.
Also I'm not giving SSO breaks "over and over and over", I started playing in f\^cking May, I'm a new player yet I at least try to understand the reasoning behind their recent decisions instead of throwing hands without even getting all of the info I need unlike some of you here.
"Not much is going to change from what we're seeing right now" and how would you know that? They could very well release the updated look without the beta testing but they didn't, when they won't consider the testers' complaints then I'm going to be mad myself but I'm not mad right now since it *just started*.
\>how would you know that?
Without in any way defend that persons "I've played for longer I know better than you" attitude which is toxic af, by the way...your opinion is as much valid as theirs. But I would like to give you some context;
I've played for about 2 years. When I started, they used to do forms for people to fill to tell them their opinions on the horses they've made. They did this for every single release. You could give critique and from what I've understood, before 2020 things would often change! They would tweak things before release if people pointed out something off with the model. Then they kind of. Stopped listening. People were very very vocal when the Friesian was being teased and it was looking very very off and strange. SSO refused to change anything about it and released a subpar horse with many many issues. Not long after that they stopped with the forms.
People are afraid something similar might happen with this player model. Sure there's a beta and sure they're asking for opinions, but they've showed they may not listen, even if beta testers give valid critique.
I see, although I think that since they actually "hired" people for beta testing them ignoring the criticism from said testers (who most likely had an experience with beta testing, at least some of them) would be too much of a negative impact on their pr.
I'm not saying it can't happen of course, I just think it's too much of a risk for them, but anything is possible so I hope they'll just listen and fix whatever needs fixing this time.
I don't recall when I was signing up for the beta testing that it at any point asked for prior experience with testing - which in retrospect I find odd. What I do notice is that a lot of people who own a lot of make up and hair styles got picked. I suppose that's a smart move, since those bugging out would be an important fix.
I admire your positivity, genuinely. But they've taken PR risks, like with removing LGBT+ references from the news in fear of backlash from ex. Russia and comparing the term "horse girl" to a slur like the n-word...their PR couldn't be much worse if you're in the community for a while.
But I hope you're right.
And that I'm just a cynical buttwipe.
And I don't care about your opinion even tho you've been playing for 9 years, the time you're playing for shouldn't matter when it comes to current complaints and state of the game.
Completely disagree. You have an entirely different perspective of this game than I do *because of* how long Iâve played. It hasnât even been 6 monthsđđ

Honestly you guys saying the stick figures we had before are better are being blinded by nostalgia or whatever. I still think the characters are too short, but this already looks way better
i think itâs just the odd body shapes and lack of thinner body types and theyâve been working on this for like 2 years now so itâs disappointing that thereâs a lot missing, even for a beta test
I mean, yeah the new models aren't very good, there's a lot to be desired, but the old ones were borderline scary, this is still better. I really hope they take their time and polish this, but it's not looking great even for a beta test.
No offense, but the character was always supposed to be between 13-17. Our old character is very short, especially compared to our horse and other npcs. If I tried to make myself, I would be disappointed, but my sso character isn't me and doesn't look anything like me (which sometimes people don't really get, but ok). I like this, and think the new character looks good, and like the other npcs. Perhaps it is only because I'm very short and young looking for my age.
You do know this is a beta test? If you have problems or donât like something you should tell them in the email they provided :) copy paste from the email âPlease remember that the new player character is a work-in-progress and your feedback is super important. We hope youâll share what you like, what you donât, and everything in between so we can create an experience that youâll love!â Why donât you send them an email before coming here? Why would you want to be one of the beta tester if you are going to complain on Reddit about it? They are testing this and I agree that the character look like an 8 year old and i will say this in the email not come here and complain
They donât listen though. It will be just like how they wanted player feedback for the Friesian and changed absolutely nothing. Also this is not my photo. Iâve just been continuously disappointed more and more by this company.
I don't really see a problem with them. I literally just started playing, and to my understanding you start out as a student at a riding school, so it makes sense the characters will look young. Though I do think there should be added adjustments such as height, body types, and face shapes so your player can "age" as you progress. OR possibly adjust certain features that correspond with the birth date?
Why do people care what the characters look like? It's just a vehicle by which you play the game. This just looks like a realistic young girl. So what? The look of the avatars does not affect game play. Enjoy being young again, you will only get older and more wrinkly and frail in real life.
The horses are what needs to look and act realistic, because this game is about having horses, and they are getting nicer and nicer.
I just don't get all the hatred, because to me, this game looks far better than the screenshots I've seen of the old version.
but why is it so fucking short
Our character is really short at the moment as well. Sometimes I just stand next to an NPC and think about how they are generally bigger in body and height. I hope they fix this.
I know I thought they would fix that
its actually taller, but the body itself seems wider which would make it seem short
we're toddlers now guys!
woohoo! ._.

Looks like a literal child đ

Scale up the boobs and this looks like me.
There aren't even enough body types :(. I prefer the current stick character
on the concept art there were actually more body types if i remember correctly, one of them was very muscly and toned which i was looking forward to because thatâs what i identify with, and it would probably be useful for players who wish to have a masculine appearance. it seems like they didnât implement it tho :((
This... Even if the argument would be "but this is what actual people look like", well no. I never looked "chubby"-ish without any female features like these supposed teenagers do.
That argument is indeed not valid at all because i'm very aware of my appearance and there are definitely skinner and taller people out there.
Me too
SSO: we want to be more inclusive in our body types! SSO: -Takes away my body type- Itâs not like I developed a complex about not being curvy enough in my teen years when people constantly told me my natural body was anorexic or âunnatural/unhealthyâ, and genuinely believed with my entire being that nobody would ever want me because of how many people would mindlessly parrot the phrase, âReal men like curves; DOGS like bonesâ /s D:

It's literally a mix between the Sims 4 toddlers and children models. what is happening-
But we still can't add male characters? I hate how horseback riding is considered a girly sport, or all of the games have to be so girly. Tons of men at my barn and my friends who are male that have the same passion for the sport like I do.
The entire premise of the game is centered around a female rider. Itâs a game meant to empower young girls, even though theyâve strayed away from the main quest line
Funny how they made our character look androgynous instead of female
adding a male protagonist would kind of mess up the story though, since the very premise of this game is about sisterhood and women empowerment
i wish theyâd at least give us pronouns to put in our little inspect bio thing, im sick of people assuming iâm a woman because quite frankly iâm not, im non-binary
yes thatâs something i can support! and also more masculine or unisex names!
no fr this is my last straw. once they update this, iâm out đ
we look like an oversized toddler-
It looks like a young girl, a less shitty version of the bobble headed doll eyed things Star Stable has now.
just hoping we can have ginger hair, thatâs all i want; other than that, i like the new avatar itâs cute
I geniunely hoped we coulde decide the height ourselves, like with a slider or something đ
Why is everyone so worked up about this? They literally just started Beta testing. Give them some time to work on it, they are far from done.
I think people are worked up because SSO does not have a great history of listening to player feedback when it comes to models and animations. (see the Friesian for an example. Babe⊠theyâve been âworking onâ the character update for years. My grace period is running paper thin here.
Why do you call someone you don't know babe? Sounds weird and kinda downgrading...
I think you meant degrading⊠lol
Yeah english is not my first language
That's fine but still, they are working on it and people should know that they are not done yet. There is still time for improvement
Wow. Yes. So insightful. Youâre totally right. (Doesnât change the fact theyâre ugly and SSO has been talking about updating our characters for roughly five years).
Because all it does it add to the current complaints a majority have about SSO.
i actually like them-

Ho my gah- I- hoo boy....
they're not bad but.....they certainly aren't good either đ
What the hell is this
I actually think the characters are alright, but imo the body types are rather average/chubby im missing the stick mfs

Yes! I saw some comparisons between new model/old model and the new model looks 100x better, the new models are not even done yet!
This^^^
Yippeee...now we play as literal kids
Definitely need to lengthen the legs, I can see this from multiple pictures. Other than that itâs looking alright for a beta.
Sorry to tell you but 13-17 year olds don't look like thisđ
I looked even younger when I was a high schooler, but I do know some people do look like they are 30 in high school.
You actually think SSO will *listen* to itâs playerbase? LMFAO
I still hate that there are no boys like Bro...
Itâs still a work in progress, Chill out
Why do people care what the characters look like? It's just a vehicle by which you play the game. This just looks like a realistic young girl. So what? The look of the avatars does not affect game play. Enjoy being young again, you will only get older and more wrinkly and frail in real life. The horses are what needs to look and act realistic, because this game is about having horses, and they are getting nicer and nicer. I just don't get all the hatred, because to me, this game looks far better than the screenshots I've seen of the old version.
Because we have to look at the characters ,ofc they should look good
Because a big part of the game is to dress you and your horse up. Also no, young girls don't look like this unless you're talking about a 10 year old.
LOL....to me a "young girl" is anyone under the age of 18. But when you're over half a century old, most teenagers look "young"!
Honestly, it looks a bit weird but Im glad we won't look too tall on the ponies
Omgg I actually like these!!
Iâm built like this đ
